THE CALLER

Christian Formation

Begin the week of February 11 - Join a group now!

Our mission as a church is to make and mature disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. What scripture, reason, tradition, and our experience have taught us is that making disciples happens best when disciples make new disciples. We know that our faith is best grown and matured in community – and our Wesleyan heritage has taught us that small communities within large communities seem to work especially well.

Small groups allow people to form lasting, authentic friendships in faith as well. A small group is different from a class because the focus is on community and not a short-term curriculum. Small groups may use curricula as a starting point, like we are doing this Lent with the series “One”, but they also may discuss books, topics of interest, be of support to one another, or in Wesleyan tradition ask each other “How is it with your soul?”

We hope you will consider joining a small group as a step in faith in your discipleship. Join us for Lent to “taste and see” what small group community is like. We pray you’ll stay with your group in the coming months, or find another group that “fits” just right.

A list of open groups is available from Pastor Carrie and will be listed in the bulletins coming up. A list is also available on the Adult Christian Formation board, next to room 12. Interest forms are available there as well as at www.umcb.org/adult-faith-opportunities/.

If you have already turned in an interest form, you will learn of your group the first week of February. You may purchase your participant book on any Sunday for $10. Leaders may pick up their leader guides and DVD’s on Sundays as well.

May God bless you richly on your faith journey! And I pray you’ll allow us to journey more closely with you in the days to come as we grow in community and friendship!

Pastor Carrie

You are invited to join the Homebuilders class as we rediscover our Wesleyan roots and study The

Wesleyan Way, A Faith That Matters. The author, Bishop Scott Jones, reminds us that God loves us, our lives have meaning and purpose, and

God has a plan for each one of us. This study will help us as we struggle with life’s questions and become part of God’s work to transform the world.

The eight session class begins the first Sunday in Lent and consists of scripture, DVD’s and discussion. All are welcome to join the group.

Commission On the Status and Role Of Women

February has been designated “Black History Month" and so it is fitting that we recognize Pauli Murray the first African-American to be ordained an Episcopal priest and one of the first women to become priests in that church.

Note: Methodist’s first clergy was Anna Howard Shaw (1847 - 1919) who

championed votes for women.

Ms. Murray was also one of the founders of National Organization for Women and served on the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women.

Read & Grow Book Discussion Group

Feb. 12 from 6:30-7:45 p.m. in the Church Parlor join the Read and Grow Group to discuss The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. Nine working class boys stormed the rowing world, transformed the sport, and galvanized the attention of millions of Americans. Brown has created an unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary young man’s personal quest.

Mar. 12 - Miracles from Heaven by Christy Wilson Beam. A little girl, with an incurable disease, and her amazing story of healing. A powerful, healing story about family, love, faith, and hope.

YOU are always welcome.

Come once or all the time.

Janet Mallarnee 440 235-7331, Betsy Meikle 440 243-5767 or Jan Harlamert 440 243-7126 would be glad to answer questions you may have.

Outreach and Service

SCAN Hunger Pantry Sunday

February 4, 2018 will be the next opportunity to join others in our congregation in the fight against hunger in our area. The SCAN Food Pantry serves persons living in Berea, Brook Park, Middleburg Hts., Olmsted Falls, Strongsville and Columbia Township. SCAN Food Pantry donations from our church are collected all month long in the cupboard just inside the sacristy door and are delivered to SCAN on the first Sunday of each month. SCAN gratefully accepts all non-perishable, unopened, and unexpired food.

There is always a special need for cereal, canned fruit (pears and fruit cocktail), canned vegetables (corn, carrots, beets or mixed vegetable), instant hot beverage mixes (coffee, tea, cocoa), as well as soap, and paper products. Mark your calendars for February 4 and let’s make 2018 our most generous year ever!!

Youth Work Mission

Thank you for being a super eater! Souper Sunday was a great success thanks to your love of soup and our group!

Psalm 150 Fundraiser Please keep your eyes out for the “Psalm 150” bulletin board, which will be located outside of each church service this Sunday. This fundraiser is supporting our 2018 Youth Work Mission trip to Rochester, Pennsylvania. On the bulletin board, you will find 150 envelopes, labeled 1-150. If you would like to support our youth, please take an envelope that shows a number that you are comfortable donating- anywhere from 1 to 150 dollars. Once you’ve placed your cash or check inside the envelope, you may drop it off in the finance office mail box.

Join us February 18...

… as we discover that Jesus is the True Vine! We’ll get messy as always having fun playing, worshiping, and eating our way through this truth. Come get to know Jesus a little better – and be sure to bring a friend! Volunteers arrive at 3:30, friends bringing friends arrive at 4 pm.

For our March Messy Easter celebration on Palm Sunday, March 25, we will have an Easter Egg Hunt as part of the fun! We need plastic egg donations, as well as small candies and small prizes (stickers, bouncy balls, erasers, etc.). Donations can be placed in the bin at the Outreach Connection Board.

Grindstone Teacher

Appreciation

We would again like to show our love and appreciation to our partner school Grindstone Elementary school teachers! Let’s send our Valentine’s love by way of sweet treats and yummy prepacked snacks. We will go on February 12 if you’d like to help spread the love. Donations should be turned in by February 11. Donations can be placed in the bin at the Outreach Connection Board.

Snow Brush Sundays After a warm, cozy, worship experience you don't really want to brush the snow off of your car. Let our Youth Work Mission team do it for you!

For $5, a smiling youth will escort you to your car, brush and scrape your windows, and gift you with a UMCB car magnet. This service will be available starting January 7 every snowy Sunday through spring.

Work Crews The Youth Work Mission is also available as a work crew to come to your home for projects that require a few extra hands and muscles. This is a donation based service, and allows our youth the continue mission service through out the year. Contact Clayton Allen at [email protected] or 440-596-7431 to schedule your project.

There is still time to join our mission team! Youth completing sixth grade and older are welcome. We also need more adults to join us. Our next meeting is February 11 at 12:30p.m. in the youth room. Come learn more!

THE CALLER

Celebrating God’s Love in Our Community

Thank you for your generosity in 2017!

One of our greatest blessings as people of The United Methodist Church is the opportunity to be part of a worldwide connection. As a global movement embodying God’s love for all creation, each local congregation financially supports “shared ministries” that are making a real difference in the world by responding to natural disasters, developing and equipping new leaders, planting new faith communities and revitalizing existing ones, and addressing the root causes of poverty-related diseases like malaria. Together, we are able to do far more in the world than any one congregation would be able to do alone.

In 2017, The UMC of Berea supported 100% of our shared ministry goal for the first time since 2011. And not only that, but we also gave above and beyond that goal, giving more than $97,000 in total to support our connectional United Methodist ministries. Comparing our total operating fund at the end of 2017 to the year-end total for 2016, we realized an increase in income of $9,373 and a total net gain of $7,638. Thank you for your generous participation in transforming the world through God’s love, and may God’s blessings continue to be abundant among and through us in 2018!

To Our Church Family,

Christmas brought us warm feelings of thanks that will last throughout the new year. Our church family came to sing beautiful carols in John’s Health Center room at the Renaissance. Their beautiful voices and kind hearts brought Christmas much closer. Thank you so very much.

United Methodist Women also brought the warmth of Christmas when Dorene Larkey came to visit bringing a package of goodies which the group had assembled. The time it took to put their gift together and to deliver it was a gift in itself. What kindness and caring! Again, thanks so very much.

Our church is a family in which each of us can feel a member, even those of us who are no longer able to be physically present. What John and I witnessed this Christmas season was the love and kindness that Jesus brought to Earth.

John and Betty Miller

From Ann & Richard Woollett’s daughter:

We are so grateful for the care the UMCB congregation has shown my parents. With no family nearby, it is especially appreciated. Mom couldn’t stop gushing about

the Christmas Carolers and the gift bag from UMW. Thank you for showing them so much kindness.

Thank you to the anonymous donors of Gideon Bibles in my honor. John Kappeler

I wanted to send a huge thank you to everyone who made the wonderful “Hot Chocolate Bar” at Grindstone a success. It was so nice of everyone to treat staff and parents to a wonderful day with goodies and hot chocolate. Everyone had a smile on their face and appreciated this kind gesture. Thank you for taking to make this holiday bright for all. Happy New Year and thank you again.

Neighborhood Luncheon Community Partnership

University Circle United Methodist Church

&

The United Methodist Church of Berea

The partnership between The United Methodist Church of Berea and the University Circle United Methodist Church has been going on since 1995. The purpose of establishing this luncheon is to provide a substantial meal to people who may be running low or out of food at the end of the month due to various reasons and circumstances. The United Methodist Church of Berea was involved in this mission program on a monthly basis until 2010 when the Epworth United Methodist Church merged with First United Methodist Church to become the University Circle United Methodist Church. Since then The UMCB has been doing this luncheon one week each month with University Circle UMC since there is a larger number of congregants at UCUMC. The luncheon is served at the end of every month and there is a need to provide this service to the guests that attend. There are usually between 30 – 45 guest s who receive a meal each month. All of the food is distributed to the guests who are able to take to-go boxes home with them. The guests are always very appreciative and thankful for the meals they receive. Thank you for your continued support of this community mission project. Claire Powell
