In August of 2019, the brothers of Delta chapter will be moving in to our ‘new’ chapter house. The house symbolizes a new era in Delta chapter at the University of Kansas. The Brothers of Delta chapter are excited for the opportunities the house will provide on many different levels – including the opportunity to become closer together with our Brothers as well as visiting alumni members. This opportunity will help extend the “2020 VISION” Strategic Growth Plan that will allow for the growth and prosperity of Delta chapter for many years to come.

The house is located at 1025 Emery Road and will serve as the chapter house for the next 4 years as of August 1st, 2019. We are very thankful to the members of both the Alumni Board of Directors and the Housing Steering Committee for their tireless dedication and commitment to bringing this great opportunity to fruition.

The AKL Delta Chapter alumni board and members – in close partnership with our active chapter leadership team and members – are in the process of developing our ‘2020 VISION’ Strategic Growth Plan to continue the momentum we are building both at KU and within our national system.

While many of you may not live in the K.C./Lawrence/Topeka area, we still want to engage you in one of our ‘Hub ‘n Spoke’ teams related to our Five Ideals as well as four other priority areas that will help us grow the fraternity in a healthy manner.

We have very ambitious growth goals for Delta Chapter during the 4-5 years we will be leasing the DU house in preparation for a potential new house building project. But we need YOUR help to grow AKL from the “inside/out” within these key areas:

“This semester the AKL men spent their free time cleaning up the neighborhoods surrounding the Oread hotel, we also spent time down at Clinton lake for multiple weekends cleaning the shoreline and the forests surrounding the lake. We also got in touch with some teachers and students who work on the community garden and helped them build some garden beds for future planting. then we prepped the beds by loading fertilizer into wheelbarrows with shovels and running them over to the beds and dumping and tilling the fertilizer. Then we covered the beds in tarp and stapled them down to protect them. We finished our semester of community service doing different personal projects including helping out at the salvation army, playing bean bag toss with the elderly, and helping run the events at the KU Relays.” - Grant Van Osdel, Community Service

To start off the year, I set up several percentage nights. They were hosted at Quinton’s, Jefferson’s, Raising Canes and Chipotle. The proceeds from these percentage nights were donated to our These Hands Don’t Hurt – our national philanthropy campaign to raise awareness and prevention of sexual assault.

As the semester came to close, we created a donation page which raised $1,500 that was donated to the Willow Center in efforts to prevent domestic abuse.

I am proud of the progress Delta Chapter made this semester regarding our philanthropies and am excited for the plans we are working on to take our efforts to a new and higher level of excellence next semester!

Ochino Foundation Scholarship Awards

The Ochino Foundation, organized under Section 501(c)(3) of the tax code, supports the academic mission of Delta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Lambda. Current members of the Ochino Foundation Board of Directors are Mike Heck, Jeff Bennett, Terry Mears and Greg Hack.

Led by Scholarship Chairman, Grant Smith and Alumni Board Member and Executive Sponsor, John Yorke, the men of Delta earned an overall 3.08 GPA last Fall – our third consecutive semester of improvement. Congratulations to all Ochino Foundation Scholarship Award winners and very special recognition goes to Max McClellan, who earned a perfect 4.00 GPA, garnering him the Dalton Hawkins Memorial Scholar Award* for Highest Chapter GPA.

We are looking forward to seeing continued improvement in our grades once they are reported for the Spring semester as well as recognizing outstanding performances with even more Ochino Foundation Scholarship Awards to be given out this Fall!

In celebration of AKL Founder’s Day, the Brothers of Delta chapter honored and celebrated the significance of the occasion in Afton, Oklahoma. The Brothers spent Founder’s Day with each other and their dates in lake houses off the Grand Lake O’ The Cherokee in Afton. The evening concluded with our annual formal dinner, as well as a continuation of the celebration at a nearby casino.

This past semester Mike Mylnski and I worked as Co-Social Chairmen. We organized date parties, Mother’s Weekend, and our Founder’s Day Formal in Afton, OK.

Some events included a Great Gatsby-themed date party, and a traditional Kansas Alpha Kappa Lambda Hawaiian-themed date party, and an eventful wine-tasting and delicious brunch during Mother’s Weekend.

Our men enjoyed a very successful spring semester and we are looking forward to planning events for when we return to campus next fall!

On Saturday, April 13th, the men of Delta Chapter hosted the first of what we plan to be an annual AKL Spring BBQ event. With over 130 guests – including AKL actives and their mothers (it was also “Mom’s Weekend!”), prospective new members and alumni members from all eras -- this event served as the “official” Open House of our new chapter house facility.

In addition to touring the new house, our guests enjoyed a spread of BBQ Beef Brisket, Smoked Turkey and all the fixins prepared and served by Best Fed Greeks – our new foodservice catering partner. It was a great afternoon of food and fellowship along with the anticipation of moving in to our new chapter house this August.

Afterwards, many of us walked down to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium to watch the KU Football Spring Game. Did you know David Booth is an AKL?

It appears the Les Miles era is well under way and we look forward to enjoying many exciting KU Football Saturday’s this fall – including our annual AKL Alumni Homecoming Tailgate event when the Jayhawks host Texas Tech on Saturday, October 26th (SAVE THE DATE!)

GRADUATING BROTHERS

“I would just like to take the time to congratulate each of these five men for graduating from KU this spring. Each of these five men have spent numerous years as an active member of Alpha Kappa Lambda Delta chapter.

In fact, these five men have contributed more to Delta chapter than just being an active member. They have held numerous executive positions such as Social Chairman, Secretary, New Member Educator, Recruitment Chairman, and so on. Additionally, these men have helped developed strong leadership within Delta chapter by holding higher up executive positions such as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Risk Management.

All in all, I felt like these five graduates were deserving of our brotherhood spotlight because they went above and beyond during their time as an active in Delta chapter. They have helped develop the future leaders within Delta chapter, and they have created friendships within the fraternity that will last a lifetime.

Lastly, I would just like to wish these five men luck as they take their next step in life.

AKL Delta Chapter

AKL has a rich heritage of providing a solid foundation for the success of its alumni members. David Henry is one such member who recalls his days in the AKL house on Stewart Ave. quite fondly. But that is jumping ahead in the story much too quickly as it is important to establish Dave’s extraordinary career in the proper context.

Despite growing up in Lawrence where his father was an instructor at KU, Dave never had a desire to follow in his footsteps to become a teacher. Given his love for math and the sciences, Dave pursued the field of Pharmacy. After graduation, Dave worked as a staff pharmacist at KU Medical Center, with some part-time precepting of students. A few years later, Dave began coordinating clinical clerkships at KUMC and started teaching as an instructor in the School of Pharmacy. Dave found he liked connecting with students and felt those interactions energized him.

More than just a teacher, Dave was an innovator in many ways outside the classroom. In the 1970’s, Dave began accompanying doctors from several different specialties on their hospital rounds before it was common practice. Today, it is the standard for pharmacy practice education. Dave also established a clinical service and practice site with the KU Hospital pediatric hematology/oncology team in 1983. It was during

his time working within the hospital that Dave earned a Master of Science in Hospital Pharmacy Administration from KU.

In addition to teaching and administration, Dave was also a pioneer in pediatric oncologic pharmacy—the effective use of drugs to treat cancer in kids. In fact, Dave has devoted his career to the practical application of those drugs for treating patients. For his efforts, Dave has received a long list of accolades and awards for his excellence in teaching, leadership and preceptorship and he is an active member in several related organizations.

After 46 years serving as a Professor in the KU School of Pharmacy – straddling both the KU Medical Center in Kansas City and the KU Lawrence campus – Dave is planning to “retire” this spring. While he will be stepping down from his position as both a teaching professor as well as Chairman of the KU School of Pharmacy, Dave will remain quite active in a variety of roles given his tremendous knowledge, wealth of experience and immeasurable value to the School.

According to Dave, “Living in the AKL house was foundational to my success. Relationships were the biggest thing I remember as it was great meeting guys from different parts of the country. I was not a very social person in high school, so being an AKL – a very ‘different’ kind of fraternity – made a difference in how I developed as a student, as a teacher and as a leader.” Dave joined AKL in the fall of 1968 and was active in the house activities throughout his 5-year Pharmacy program. Dave recalls being recruited by Doug Harris – along with fellow Lawrence High School friends, Craig Marsh and Tom Alderson. He also relayed some fun memories of his Pledge Son, Patrick Murphy. Not a big “party” guy, Dave loved to play cards with some of the brothers after dinner and he was an accomplished Volleyball player who played on KU’s club team as well as the AKL intramural team.

Now that his career is winding down, Dave plans to become more active with AKL – attending alumni events as well as serving on the Scholarship committee as part of our Five Ideals-based 2020 VISION Strategic Growth Plan.

During his remarkable tenure at KU within the School of Pharmacy and the KU Medical Center, Dave has taught and mentored literally thousands of students who went on to treat an exponentially greater number of patients in Kansas and across the country. For his tremendous impact, the KU School of Pharmacy has established the “David W. Henry Student Support Fund” to benefit PharmD students with an interest in oncology or those directly impacted by cancer.

What an incredible “living legacy” for which your AKL brothers are extremely proud.
