The 14th Annual AKA Young Koi Show was held on 30th September this year at a venue used by the club for several years, the Panthers Triglov Club at St John’s Park. The site has the advantage of very easy access for both set-up and movement of the koi in and out of the bins but unfortunately this year attracted few visitors.

However, those who did attend were rewarded with 133 very nice young koi to view, exhibited in two sizes, 20-30 cm and 30-40 cm. It is lovely to walk onto a show ground and immediately be aware of excellent quality koi, literally in the first bin you come to.

Although cold in the early morning, the temperature warmed magnificently to a perfect blue-sky Australian Spring day. Even I ended up taking my coat off—a far cry from last year when it poured with rain and everyone was so

cold they were very happy to pack up and go home as soon as the judging was completed!

As usual, set up of the site was organised on the Saturday, the bins placed in a small circle and filled by water truck.The site was also decorated with koi socks (koinbori) on long bamboo poles, which give a nice festive air. Ian would like more of these for the club, after

having seen a magnificent display two years ago at the joint Japanese festival and Coffs Harbour show. Koinbori are perfect decorations for a koi show.

On Sunday everything was ready for an early start to the judging at 8.30. The koi were swimming comfortably in their bins, their photos posted on the wall behind the computer waiting for decisions to be made by our judge this year, Mr Allan Bennett from Western Australia. Although a fairly recent ZNA Locally Certified Judge, Allan has tremendous experience of koi over many years, being one of the best koi breeders in Australia with some superb koi to his credit. For example, a magnificent Shiro Utsuri bred by Allan has won Grand Champion twice over the last two years in Western Australia.

Awards made this year at the AKA Young Koi Show included first, second and third in each variety and size, plus best in each variety irrespective of size. Finally, Grand Champion and Reserve Champion were chosen. Grand Champion this year went to a lovely Size 3 Ai Goromo, because of its superb shape and skin quality. not yet fully developed, but other excellent appreciation features far outweighed this point on the day. Reserve Champion went to a lovely Sanke, only let down by a rather more slender shape. It was not quite as robust as the Koromo, but displayed other very attractive features: good white and hi plus nicely placed and well-developed black (sumi) markings. Exhibitors Terry McNeil and Lex Rayment were justifiably delighted with the decisions.

Variety champions included koi from most of the exhibitors. I had to eat humble pie over the Kin-Gin-Rin A winner, our Shiro Utsuri! Yes, she has lovely kin-gin-rin, and excellent white and sumi on her very nicely proportioned body but I was going to leave her at home, because her head still has the slight yellow tinge common to many young Shiro Utsuri! Ian insisted she had a day out and on this occasion was very much justified.

Graham and Lee Famelli won Metallic Doitsu and the judge’s special award for a lovely size 2 Kikokuryu. These unusual metallic Kumonryu are difficult to produce to a high

standard and this example had both superb shine and well-developed sumi. Graham and Lee also won best Showa, with a lovely size three Kindai (modern type) example. It is not possible to talk about all the winners but I was very pleased to see Bryce Hough’s Yamatonishiki win Hikarimoyo (see this month’s front cover photograph) and Vinh and David Diep’s Doitsu Sanke win Non-Metallic Doitsu. Both were excellent examples of their varieties and very eye-catching.

The whole show ran well, koi and exhibitors were happy, Martin Rocliffe worked wonders with the computer program and all the results were posted on schedule, by lunchtime.

What I would like to say before closing is a huge thank you to all the unsung heroes who spend so much time organising any koi show, beforehand, during and afterwards. Although as a judge, I have attended hundreds of shows, until coming to Australia I never fully appreciated how much work goes on behind the

scenes. For example, even with Shona’s superb computer program, processing the entries and organising bins for the exhibitors took Ian several complete evenings’ work before the show and Martin Rocliffe and myself most of the morning on show day to work through. Not to mention the other volunteers who posted the results on the show bins and acted as runners for the judge. Remember too, the show bins have to be transported to the site, unloaded, arranged, the water truck organised, the bins filled. After the show they need emptying, sterilizing, drying and returning to their store.

The club is indebted to Arthur Johnston, who has for many years looked after the show bins on his property, taken them to shows and driven them home again. It is impossible to mention everyone who helped, but a big thank you to all. Remember! We are always looking

for new volunteers. I know it takes precious time, but it is very rewarding to be involved in a show, rather than just visit.

Thank you also, to our exhibitors, who made the effort to bring their superb koi for all of us to enjoy. All you club members out there who didn’t exhibit this time, next year, lets’ see your koi too! Its fun—please participate.
