Breaking-inyour airgun

Breaking-in equipment is a relic of the past, isn’t it? I remember when you drove new cars a certain way for a specified number of miles to break-in the engine, but today you can drive one off the lot and right out onto the freeway. Haven’t we gotten away from the need to break things in?

Actually—no, we haven’t. And, of all the types of machinery that require break-ins, airguns stand out. That’s probably because airguns are still made as entirely mechanical mechanisms—computers and electronics haven’t yet become part of airgun technology.

Spring-piston airgunsBoth spring-piston rifles and pistols need a

break-in period. When I wrote my book about the Beeman R1 rifle, I tested not one but two new rifles, documenting their performance through 1,000 shots, each. The change in performance over the first 500 shots was the most dramatic, but the rifles were still changing at the end of the first 1,000 shots. In that case, they both slowed down a little and became more consistent. The cocking effort also dropped about 5 lbs. for each rifle.

The rough edges of the metal parts got smoother by wearing against each other as more shots were fired. Lubrication was spread around and got into every crevice of the gun and into all the pores and imperfections of the metal surfaces. In short, things “slicked up.”

Two other airguns that exhibited even more dramatic changes from a break-in were a Beeman (Webley) C1 carbine that got easier to cock, smoother shooting and its trigger improved in the most dramatic way; and a BSF S55 breakbarrel that was quite rough in the beginning but did the exact same thing. I didn’t record the numbers for either of these guns, but the changes were quite dramatic.

Finally, a Air Arms TX200 I still own was chrongraphed at 875 f.p.s. with a certain pellet when new. Today, after perhaps 10,000 shots and no lubrication, this same rifle averages 940 f.p.s. with the same pellet. That’s positive proof that a break-in changes things.

Pneumatics and CO2 gunsOther powerplants break-in, as well. One of

the most surprising is the precharged pneumatic (PCP). These guns shoot so well out of the box that people overlook the fact that they also break in. But I’ve recorded a 60 f.p.s. velocity increase in a certain PCP from the time it was brand new to the time it had about 4,000 shots on the powerplant.

You may not notice a velocity increase in a CO2 gun, but the number of shots you get from a cartridge will increase over time. That comes from the same wearing-in of parts that affects the other airguns.

Every airgun will benefit from a break-in period. Use that time to become familiar with the gun, and it’ll seem to get better with each use.

How to sight-inan air rifle

You finally bought an airgun because you’re excited to start shooting. The package has arrived and everything has turned real.

How do you get started? How do you sight-in your new rifle?Why do you need to sight-in the rifle? Didn’t

the manufacturer do that when they built the gun? They certainly used to. But after World War II, labor costs began to rise, and it got too expensive for companies to spend the time shooting each gun they made—other than test-firing to see that they worked and proof-testing for firearms. That’s how it’s done today.

So, you do need to sight-in most new guns. Sometimes, you luck out and they’re right on when you get them. Usually, there are some adjustments to make. This short article will discuss guns that have open sights on them because scopes are an entirely different subject.

Start small......or in this case, start close because with an

airgun, you can do that if you plan for it. That’s good, because it means you’ll never have the big problem that firearms shooters have—boresighting your gun. If you start shooting at 10 feet, there’s no way you can miss the target even if the sights are way off.

This procedure is for pellet rifles, only. You need a safe backstop that will not allow the pellets to bounce back. And everyone in the vicinity of the shooting must wear safety glasses.

At 10 feet, your pellet will hit below the point at which the open sights are aimed. It should land exactly as far below the top of the front sight as it is above the center of the bore. In other words, if the top of the front sight is 1.50 inches above the center of the bore, expect the pellets to strike the target paper about the same distance below the point of aim.

At 10 feet, the target doesn’t need to be very large. A dot the size of a pencil eraser should be big enough. A dime-sized dot will look very large. Aim at the dot and see where the pellet strikes the paper. If it’s anything other than 1.50-inches directly below the dot you aimed at, adjust the rear sight to bring the strike of the round to that point. Once you’re hitting close to that point, you can back up to 20 yards and be confident that your pellet will land near the point of aim.

Small corrections grow with distanceIf the pellet lands off to one side of the expected

point of impact at 10 feet, that offset will grow larger when you back up. The goal is to keep the pellet on the centerline of the target and as far below the aim point as the top of the front sight is above the bore. You can sight-in this way in 10 minutes.

Teaching kids to shoot

Some lessons, like not playing with fire or not running into the street, are for their protection so they don’t learn the hard way. Basic gun education falls into that category.

You may not want your child to be around firearms; but unless you’re with them 24 hours of every day for their entire lives, you can’t prevent that possibility. Teaching them how to act in the presence of firearms is, therefore, a guardian’s fundamental responsibility.

The real benefit of shootingLearning to shoot the right way, which means

learning proper gun etiquette and gun handling first, instills discipline in a child. Children are curious by nature. Use their curiosity to your advantage. Make lesson time a special one-on-one time, where you treat them as individuals. Keep the lessons short because children have brief attention spans.

Treat these lessons as rewards for good behavior, not as mandatory tasks they must do. In other words, say something like this, “Jean, you’re now old enough to learn something very special. I want to show you how to act around firearms and how to handle firearms properly.” If you have any rapport with the child, they should be thrilled by this attention.

Lesson oneIf the child is very young, there is only one lesson.

Tell them that when they see a firearm, they should leave the room or area immediately and tell an adult. They may not remain in a room or place where there are firearms unless they’re with adults they recognize as their guardians.

Lesson twoTalk to the child and discuss the fact that the

firearms they see on television and in the movies are not real. Gauge whether they understand the difference between what is real and what isn’t. It isn’t necessary to destroy the Tooth Fairy at this time. But does the child realize the people on TV are actors? This isn’t a one-question, one-answer affair. It’s a discussion. If you see that they understand, you can proceed.

Lesson threeCover safe gun handling. For children, there need

to be a few simple rules:

1. Never touch a gun unless they’re with a guardian adult. Children don’t understand the differ-ence between older children in their teens and responsible adults, so make this rule very clear and absolute. It must be a guardian adult.

2. Never touch a gun unless the childe asks for and receives permission.

3. Never point a gun at anything you don’t intend killing/destroying.

Lesson three requires a big decision on your part. If your child is going to play airsoft games, they’ll not only point guns at other people but also intentionally shoot at them. This is very confusing for many children, so think very carefully before you allow your child to play combative airsoft games.

Video games also come into question at this point. Although they’re simulations, they do program the thoughts of the players through the same repetition that is used by the military to train soldiers. Consider that when granting permission to your children.

After lesson three, the child is ready to begin shooting. That does not mean that they will always be safe, however. As you instruct them, always watch them for unsafe acts and stop them whenever they commit one. This may actually help you become a safer gun-handler at the same time.

As the shooting lessons progress, test each child by violating one of the rules from lesson three and seeing if they catch it. Children love to catch adults making mistakes, and this is a powerful way to reinforce good gun-handling.

Learning to shootAlways teach new shooters with long guns rather

than handguns because handguns are too easy to turn and point in unsafe directions. Also, you can watch the muzzle(s) of long guns much easier. Choose rifles that are sized for the students, so they feel comfortable with them.

If you’re teaching more than one child, only permit one shooter at a time unless there’s more than one guardian parent involved. Have the children who are not involved in shooting watch the shooter and include them in the critiques afterward.

Shooting lesson 1: Explaining the sight picture

greatest precision. Open post-and-notch sights can also be used, but fiberoptic sights are not precise enough for teaching purposes and should not be used. If they must be used, set up the lighting on the range so the fiberoptic tubes do not glow. Use the sights as conventional post-and-notch sights. A bright light on the target and low light where the sights are located will do this.

Show the shooter the target and explain that the sights will be set for either a 6 o’clock hold (left sight picture) or a target aperture hold (right sight picture). The pellet will strike the center dot when the sights are on target as the gun fires.

Shooting lesson 2:Practicing the sight picture

The second lesson builds upon the first lesson, and no shooting is involved. In fact, you don’t even need a gun! You can use a sighting bar with “sights” made from card stock. Since the instructor will be down range, the sighting bar is safer, although guns can be used just as well.

Lay the sighting bar on a table or the gun across a cardboard box that has two v-notches cut in it. The student should not touch the rifle in this lesson.

The instructor is seated on a chair downrange between 25 and 33 feet from the shooter—if you have that much distance. In front of the chair is a cardboard box with a plain piece of paper taped to it. The instructor has a second piece of paper that has a one-inch black bullseye in its center. In the center of the bullseye, there’s a small hole that a sharp pencil can poke through.

The student is positioned so he can see the cardboard box through the sights on the sighting bar or rifle. The sighting bar or rifle MUST NOT BE TOUCHED during this exercise! If they’re touched, start the exercise all over.

The instructor sits on the chair downrange and holds the paper with the bullseye in front of the paper attached to the cardboard box. The cardboard box MUST NOT MOVE during this exercise, so push it back against the legs of the chair.

The student sights through his sights and tells the instructor how to move the bullseye until it appears to be exactly aligned with the sights. The student then calls, “Mark,” and the instructor marks the paper on the box with a pencil through the hole in the bullseye. Once the mark has been made, the instructor moves the bullseye paper away, and then starts the exercise again. When the student has made three “shots” this way, the exercise is stopped and critiqued.

If the sights have remained in the same place and the cardboard box has not moved, there should be three dots very close to each other on the paper that’s taped to the box. The closer these dots are, the better the student saw the sight picture. If the student is at least 25 feet from the bullseye and the three dots are no more than one inch apart, the student understands the sight picture well enough to advance. If not, spend more time explaining the sight picture and practicing this exercise until that level is reached.

This is a bullseye for a 10-meter rifle. The pellet at the top is a .177 target wadcutter like the shooters will use The dot in the center is the 10-ring. This is well-suited for teaching new shooters at distances from 25 to 33 feet distance, because the bull is sized to compliment the target sights.

The gun’s sights may also be used. Make sure the shooter never touches the gun during this exercise, so nothing moves.

The sighting bar represents the sights on the gun. It does not have to be a precision build, as long as the bar does not move during the exercise. The object is to see the target the same way every time.

The instructor moves the target until it looks right to the shooter, who then calls, “Mark.” The instructor marks through the center of the bull with a pencil.

Shooting lesson 3:Live fire

This is the first time the student will fire the gun with pellets. The instructor may have to cock and load the gun for the student, so remain close to the firing line and stand just behind the student. Be ready to grab the rifle if the student moves the muzzle in an unsafe direction. Shoot into an approved pellet trap and make everyone in the area wear approved safety glasses for this exercise.

It’s best to shoot at a target that has multiple bulls and shoot just one shot at each bull. That way, the pellet holes are most visible. Use only wadcutter (flat-nosed) pellets because they’ll cut perfectly round holes in the target. Use only official targets printed on target paper. Other types of paper tear and do not shot pellet holes well.

With the target set up, you’ll first conduct some dry-fire exercises if the rifle permits it. Guns like the Dai-sy 853 allow the bolt to be cocked and the trigger to be pulled without charging the gun with air. That’s perfect for training a new shooter because they can get used to the trigger-pull without fir-ing any pellets. But if a gun doesn’t have this feature, you have to start shooting pellets right away. DO NOT dry-fire (shoot a gun without a pel-let) if the gun is not designed for it!

The rifle is rested so the student does not have to bear its weight. A rolled-up blanket is good for this, but be sure to adjust it so the shooter is comfortable. The shooter is seated behind the table the rifle rests on, and all others stand behind the shooter. The shooter does not touch the rifle until the instructor tells him that the range is hot (meaning all people are safely behind the firing line and wear-ing eye protection). Anytime “Cease Fire” is called by anyone, the shooter puts the rifle down and does not touch it again until instructed to do so. If it’s cocked and loaded at the time this happens, the shooter in-forms the instructor of that status—but he still puts the gun down. No one goes forward of the firing line until all guns are unloaded and made safe (unable to fire). How a gun is made safe depends on its design, but the instructor is responsible for knowing how it’s done and to inform all shooters how to make each gun on the range safe.

Make the range “hot” (declaring that all shooters are prepared to shoot and that it’s safe to do so). Allow the shooter to cock and load the gun at this time. Tell him to fire five shots at the target. Then call a Cease Fire, make all guns safe and go downrange to retrieve the target

Spend some time critiquing this first target. If the triangulation exercise (shooting lesson one) went well, you can expect all five pellets to be inside the bull, assuming the rifle was properly sighted-in. If they all score eight or more points (where the pellet hole has touched the 8-ring of the bull), the shooter is doing exceptionally well for the first time. Praise him and shoot a second five shots, following the same proce-dure as before.

Critique the second five shots as you did the first and consider ending the session at this point. If the shooter’s still interested, you may continue. Young shooters will quickly tire from the level of concentra-

tion this kind of event requires. In time, they’ll build endurance—but this early, they’ll tire fast.

Maintain discipline at all timesIf the shooter commits an unsafe act or fails to

follow instructions at any time, end the session. Discuss why the session ended, so he understands that his time shooting depends on his behavior. In time, this will instill self-discipline if the rules are followed consistently.

Additional shootingThis is where a parent or guardian’s judgment

comes into play. Some young shooters advance very fast, and their self-control develops quickly. Others do not.

The supervising guardian has to evaluate each child individually and determine the pace at which advancement can take place.

The goal is to allow the young shooter to graduate from shooting a rested rifle, to holding it offhand and shooting standing up. Then, you work toward shooting a full match and start keeping track of scores. Improvement can be plotted that way, and that’s what all of this training is about.

From time to time, intentionally commit an unsafe act, such as trying to walk in front of the firing line

before it has been declared safe (some call it a cold line). The shooter should immediately call “Cease Fire” when this happens. If they don’t, stop what you’re doing, point out the unsatisfactory behavior to the shooter and tell them it is their responsibility to call a Cease Fire when they witness an unsafe act.

ing because BB guns have too many conflicting safety issues that need to be addressed.

handle after it has been pumped—trying for a second stroke—the compressed air from the first stroke rushes back out of the reservoir.

Pneumatic performanceNearly all pneumatic powerplants perform the

same, regardless of how they operate. When fired, they typically recoil very little and are remarkably insensitive to how they’re held. As a result, pneumatics are the most pleasant type of airgun to shoot and have a deserved reputation for being the

most accurate, as well.

Because they are so desirable, manufacturers put a lot of quality into their pneumatics,

which results in higher prices. There are a few exceptions like the Beeman P17 single-stroke pneumatic pistol that retails for less than $50; but, in general, pneumatics are among the more expensive guns, with precharged pneumatics leading the field.

Still, their insensitivity to hold and greater accuracy make them the best choices for target rifles and pistols and long-range sporting rifles. Today’s top pneumatic air rifles can equal the best rimfire target rifles to about 50 yards under ideal conditions.

Spring-pistonThe spring-piston airgun came about in the 19th

century. It works by a powerful spring pushing an airtight piston forward when the gun fires. The piston then compresses the air in front of it and shoves it through a small port at the end of the compression chamber, where it gets behind the pellet and pushes it down the barrel. The BB gun mechanism is a spring piston with a slight variation that I will explain in a moment.

The spring piston powerplant is the most popular, by far, because shooters perceive that it is both simple and reliable. It out-sells all the other

Airguns are powered by air or compressed gas, supplied by three main powerplants and a couple minor powerplants. These powerplants determine how we categorize an airgun. Let’s look at what goes into each of these powerplants—to make it easier to choose the gun that best suits you.

PneumaticsPneumatics

are the oldest type of airguns. They date back to some time in the mid-16th century, but we don’t know the exact date. There’s an example in the Royal Danish Museum that’s dated 1603. It’s so refined that we know something must have come before it.

Pneumatics are further divided into three sub-types—precharged, multi-pump and single-stroke. Precharged pneumatics, abbreviated as PCP, are the oldest type. They’re filled with compressed air and can be fired many times between fillings and are the most popular type of pneumatic today, though not the most common. PCPs are very easy to shoot accurately.

Multi-pump pneumatics are also quite old, but Americans know of them through Benjamin, Crosman and, more recently, Daisy. These guns are pumped a variable number of times; and, when fired, they exhaust all their air. Multi-pumps of the past have been able to fire more than a single shot when filled, but today’s guns must be pumped for each shot. These guns have historically been very affordable and are among the airguns that Americans know best.

Single-stroke pneumatics are the newest type. They first came into being when Walther brought out the LGR target rifle and LPII target pistol in the 1960s. A single-stroke is like a multi-pump that can only be pumped one time. If you move the pump

piston airguns than in any other powerplant type. It ranges from marginal guns made in Asia to remarkable guns made in the United Kingdom and Germany.

Three cocking typesSpring-piston guns are further defined by how

they’re cocked. They can either be breakbarrels, underlevers or sidelevers. Both the underlever and sidelever guns have a separate cocking lever, while the breakbarrel guns use the barrel to cock the mechanism. There’s a fourth type of mechanism—the overlever—but they aren’t common.

Some shooters believe that because a breakbarrel is cocked by its barrel, the barrel will bend over time or the gun will be less accurate because the barrel moves. Both of these ideas are urban legends that have been proven false with testing.

Spring-piston performanceIt takes skill to shoot a spring-piston airgun

well. The shooter must learn not to fight the recoil of the gun, but to let it play out the same way on every shot. A springer vibrates with every shot; and if this vibration doesn’t act in the same way every time, the muzzle will be in a different place when the pellet exits. That causes the shots to be thrown around wildly instead of grouping well. Even if the barrel is very accurate, this random vibration can destroy any potential for accuracy the gun may have.

The amount of air that a spring-piston gun compresses is limited to the internal volume of the compression chamber. Because the air pressure always starts out at the ambient pressure, spring-piston guns generate very little compressed air by volume—hence, they’re potentially the weakest of all the powerplants. This is certainly true when compared to pneumatics; but since CO

2 guns are usually lower-

end guns, the spring-piston guns are usually more powerful. The potential isn’t there, but spring-piston guns are built to the limit of their potential.

Because of the skill required to shoot spring guns well, they’re perceived to be less accurate than precharged pneumatics, but that isn’t necessarily true. A skilled shooter with a quality springer can give a good PCP a run for its money.

Gas springsOne type of spring-piston design uses a gas

spring unit instead of a coiled steel mainspring with a separate piston. Gas springs replaced coiled steel springs for applications in automobiles several decades ago. They are lighter, more reliable, last longer, do not weaken when held in full compression most of the time and they work better in cold weather (to a point).

Gas springs are found in all three types of spring-piston airguns—breakbarrels, sidelevers and underlevers, though they are most commonly found

in breakbarrels. While they have the advantages listed here, they do have one drawback. They require full cocking effort from the instant cocking begins, while a steel spring gradually builds up to the maximum effort. Hence, steel spring cocking geometry can be set up to assist with the cocking effort, but not much can be done to offset the gas spring.

BB gunsI said earlier that BB guns were a special type

of spring-piston powerplant. The classic Red Ryder-type BB guns have a modified two-stage spring-piston design. There’s a long hollow tube in the center of the piston that pushes the BB off its seat when the gun is fired, accelerating it to around 80 f.p.s. That’s stage one. The air compressed by the piston then rushes through the tube, boosting velocity up as high as it will go—somewhere between 250 and 350 f.p.s. That’s the second stage of this unique airgun powerplant.

CO2 gunsCarbon dioxide gas has been used to power

guns since the late 1870s, when Paul Giffard first converted his pneumatic guns to operate on the gas. Carbon dioxide, or CO2

, as it is known, is a refrigerant

gas that expands to many times its volume when changing from a liquid to a gas. At 70 deg. F, it has a vapor pressure of 853 psi that remains constant. If some of the gas is removed from a pressure vessel, such as when a gun fires and exhausts it through the valve, the internal pressure drops, causing some of the liquid to evaporate until the gas pressure stabilizes again. So, CO2 is a self-regulating gas. As long as the temperature remains constant, the pressure stays the same.

Giffard’s guns were high-quality sporting guns of fairly large calibers (6mm and 8mm, as well as 4.5mm), but other companies didn’t follow him. The gas was difficult to obtain, and users had to mail their empty gas reservoirs to the company for a refill. That killed the idea.

Crosman resurrected CO2 in the early 1930s, for guns they supplied with entire shooting galleries. The idea was that companies would establish shooting leagues for their employees; and while there was some interest, World War II killed the scheme. The company revived the idea after the war, when they converted some of their pneumatic rifles to use 4.5-oz. military surplus CO2 tanks. The sudden availability of thousands of tanks spurred this initiative, but it also died within a few years.

since. Small and compact, this cartridge provides the identical power as a huge tank of CO2 because of the gas pressure regulation phenomenon.

CO2 gun performanceBecause it’s a refrigerant, CO2 cools the gun

as it’s used, and the gas pressure drops as it cools. The velocity of these guns declines when they’re fired rapidly. On the other hand, the convenience of a large supply of pressurized gas lends itself to repeating mechanisms. Shooters must learn their guns to know how fast they can be fired without affecting performance.

Ambient temperature affects performance, so CO2 guns operate best within a range of temperatures from about 60 deg. to about 95 deg. F. Any lower and the gun may not be able to recover from the cold. Any hotter and you run the risk of a valve lockup from over-pressurization.

CO2 guns are neutral from a hold sensitivity standpoint, so they’re more like pneumatics in that respect. Because the gas pressure remains constant, their valves have to be opened to pass more gas if

more velocity is desired—and they top out around the same point as magnum springers. They do not achieve the high velocities of springers; but because they can shoot much heavier pellets, their power is about on par.

Catapult gunsWe don’t see these as much today, but there

were a crop of so-called airguns that used elastic or rubber bands. Think of them as slingshots shaped like guns. With one exception, these were all low-powered indoor target guns. The exception was a .43-caliber lead ball shooter than could take medium-sized game.

Catapult guns normally shoot their small projectiles at between 100 and 160 f.p.s., so the power is very low. Many of them shoot round lead balls that are considerably smaller than a standard steel BB, and they don’t generate a lot of energy, either. They were often packaged as toys for shooting indoors. Of course, the times have changed since these guns were popular (~1920-1960); and if they were offered today, the sales pitch would have to be updated.

SummaryThere you have it—three major airgun

powerplants with all their variations. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and there’s enough choice to satisfy almost any shooter and budget.

Airguns to maintain firearm proficiency

Today’s crop of lookalike airguns can certainly be used to maintain proficiency with the firearms they mimic. And when I say airguns, I’m talking about handguns, only. There are several lookalike air rifles, too, but the question of maintaining proficiency generally deals with handling a handgun in a defensive situation.

How many firearm lookalikes are there?There are too many for me to cover in this short

article, but maybe this will give you a sense of how real and how valuable these airguns are. Several times in the past 10 years, I’ve purchased firearms after owning and shooting the airguns that copied it! That holds for the Walther PPK/S, Desert Eagle Magnum, Colt M1911A1, S&W 686 and Soviet Makarov pistol. I actually owned the air pistol copy of each of these guns before obtaining the firearms they copied represented.

There are other firearms on my list—like the P08 Luger, the Broomhandle C96 Mauser and the Beretta FS92 pistol—but the guns I’m talking about here are the modern ones.

What type of training can you do?Airguns can be good trainers for a number of

handgun handling techniques. Let’s start with the obvious—sighting and trigger control. In the past, airgun handgun triggers and sights were not very realistic. These days, the higher-end airguns have triggers that are equal to, and in some cases better than, the handguns they copy. The S&W 586 airgun has a lighter, smoother double-action trigger-pull than the firearm 586. And the single-action pull is good too, though not as crisp as the firearm. Since that gun is so accurate, it’s great for realistic handgun training, though at closer range—25 feet instead of 25 yards.

But it’s the semiautos that people are most intrigued with. The Beretta 92FS airgun weighs and feels the same as the firearm. It doesn’t recoil, but it’ll give you plenty of good practice.

Another thing you can use airguns for is holster work—deploying the gun in combat situations. Things like drawing and firing double taps (two quick shots into a target) are almost identical with an airgun, as they are with the firearm version of the same gun.

Airguns are even better than firearms for rapid target acquisition. Think IDPA (Int’l. Defensive Pistol Assoc.) and IPSC (Int’l. Practical Shooting Confederation), where ammo costs limit the amount of shooting the average person can afford. But airgun ammo that costs a hundredth of firearm ammo lets everyone get into the game. The rapid-deployment holsters work as well for airguns as they do for firearms, so training is super realistic. The targets are closer, smaller and the shooting is quieter, but the training is real.
