By Eric Carlson

A BIG thank you to all who attended our 2010 High Hopes golf event at Apple Tree Resort this past June. A special Thank You to Mel Stottlemyre for returning and acting as our 2010 honorary chairman. Nice job, Mel – you performed your duties in a Hall of Fame manner without our going to the pen! We had a great time catching up with old friends, such as Pete Rademacher, in perfect clear-blue-sky Yakima weather, enjoying one of our most financially successful golf events to date. As to our other tournament winners, they are listed below.

Our day-long annual Hazel Leland Memorial putting contest was won by ex-Parker board president Steve Dale and Bob DiPietro Jr.

Letter from the PresidentOn June 11, 2010, the Parker Foundation

held its fifth annual Legends Reunion event. Chuck Brayton, Bob Garretson Jr., and Mel Stottlemyre were our guest speakers, and Mel was the honorary golf tournament chairman the following day for our major fundraiser of the year.

The Legends Reunion is always scheduled the evening before the tournament and offers all Foundation members and supporters an opportunity to gather, socialize and ab-sorb anecdotes, data, information, and personal notes about Yakima Valley’s rich and significant athletic history. I men-tion this here as a reminder that the Legends Reunion is an unusual, special and entertaining event held annually to em-phasize our community’s great athletic heritage – well worth attending when you can.

It is also a time to thank key Foundation supporters, namely the Foundation Contributor of the Year and the Parker Partner of the Year. This year the Foundation board recognized Greg and Jan Luring, owners of McDonald’s of Yakima, as Parker Foundation Contributors of the Year and George “Spud” Edmondson as Parker Partner of the Year.

Contributors of the Year: For many, many years Greg and Jan Luring have shared their per-sonal resources in support of innu-merable youth, community and civic activities, events and programs. Their support of the Parker Founda-tion is a great example of their gener-osity. For the first five years of Foun-dation operation they have been key sponsors of the golf tournament, helping the Foundation raise money in support of youth sports and activi-ties, development of athletic and recreational facilities, and YVCC athletic programs. At the Legends Reunion the Foundation board acknowledged not only their sponsorship of the Foundation, but also highlighted their long and re-markable record of civic support in Yakima.

Parker Partner of the Year: For five years running Spud Edmondson has worked hard on making the golf tourna-

ment one of the best, high-quality, an-nual social and fundraising events in Yakima. He has helped make it a per-sonal experience for all participants, fo-cusing on and emphasizing the signifi-cance of maintaining long-time person-al connections within the athletic com-munity. Those who are able to partici-pate in the Foundation’s annual fund-raising and social events invariably re-mark about how special the golf tourna-ment weekend is. Fundraiser, yes; but so

much more than that. We all have Spud Edmondson to thank for this personal aspect of our fundraising weekend.

The Legends Reunion – the golf tournament – a great weekend experience. The board thanks all who participate in and support the Parker Youth and Sports Foundation. The Foundation is a community in and of itself as much as it is a service organization… thanks to all who share in the Foun-dation mission and the Yakima Valley athletic heritage.

Jan and Greg Luring

From the OfficeBy Jerry Ward

The PY&SF is barely six years old, but during that time we have learned one thing for sure; spring around the Foun-dation office is a bundle of en-ergy, ranging from the High Hopes Golf Committee meet-

ing on a weekly basis, making contacts with sponsors and teams… to the increased numbers of ‘old’ friends and Foun-dation supporters making sure their reservations are in place for the Legends Reunion which is held annually the night before the golf tournament. Kudos are aplenty, but just a big round of applause to the golf committee heavy-weights, Eric Carlson, Virginia Hays, and Spud Edmond-son. This year the Legends Reunion was spearheaded by Nancy Leahy and we had the best turn out in several years, thanks to her tireless work to make the evening such a suc-cess.

Quick question: Name the only sport in which the ball is always in possession of the team on defense, and the of-fensive team can score without touching the ball? And with that question in mind we express our appreciation to Mel Stottlemyre for being the Honorary Golf Chairman this year. Bobo Brayton, Bob Garretson and Dave Edler joined the Thursday Rotary luncheon program to cover baseball at Parker Field. Bobo and Bob joined Mel during for the Sports Legend Event Friday evening. Mel joined the golfers Satur-day morning and was as gracious as ever. Assume you now know the answer to the question since these three guys played the game longer than most of us can remember.

And more golf. Each year, Central Washington Univer-sity sends a team to our High Hopes Tournament, and in return, the PY&SF sends a team to their Jon Kitna Tourna-ment at Suncadia. This year, Foundation Board members Eric Carlson, Sam Karr, and Jerry Ward were joined by Parker Partner, Bob McCutcheon for a fun day on the links… and as good luck would have it, our team was play-ing directly behind the Kitna foursome. It was enjoyable to chat with Jon and wish him well this coming season with the Dallas Cowboys.

CONDOLENCES: The fun and excitement with the Foundation this past spring and summer has certainly been tempered with the passing of a very dear friend. Nancy Faller, wife of charter Board mem-ber, Bill Faller, passed away on July 17. The office has attempted to contact as many of our Founda-tion members as possible that know the Faller family, and if you are reading this for the first time via the High Hopes newsletter, do not hesitate to contact us for fur-ther information. The Faller fami-ly constructed one of the more in-sightful obituaries we have ever read. They truly captured the essence of Nancy’s life and the person she was, and we would be happy to share this with you. Nancy will be missed by all that knew her, and especially by this writer.

3Kyle Cairns Named Joe Donahue Scholarship Recipient

Raised in Goldendale, Kyle was a member of the 2009 graduating Timberwolves class. He participated in football (senior captain), soccer (co-captain three years) and tennis. Kyle said that “although soccer by far is my best sport, football has to be my favorite.”

In the teacher recommendation letters, Kyle was described as a leader, serving as class treasurer

and vice president of the Purple and Gold Club. He earned First Team All-Conference honor as a running back his senior year as well as Second Team as a punter and Honorable Mention as a kicker. He earned First Team All-League honor as a defender as a junior.

Volunteering has kept Kyle busy. He has been a coach for a youth soccer league (AYSO) and has worked at a football training camp for kids.

A sophomore this fall at Yakima Valley Community College, Kyle would like to continue his education working toward a degree in education. Focusing on a major in history, he would like to teach in a low-income town and coach football or soccer.

Kyle was on the Dean’s List last fall and the President’s List for winter quarter, with a 3.69 cumulative grade point average.

Faller/Brayton Scholarship

Long Line of YVCC Baseball tradition: Coach Bobo Brayton, Coach Bill Faller, first Brayton/Faller Endowment Fund recipient Tyler Berman, current YVCC Head Coach Ken Wilson

Middle infielder Tyler Berman was selected as the first recipient of the Faller/Brayton Scholarship supported by the Brayton/Faller Endowment Fund.

Tyler is a 2009 graduate of Eisenhower High School. He led the 2010 YVCC Yaks with 17 RBI and 444 OBP while batting .350. Tyler was described by Coach Wilson as a team leader and hard worker whose ability to advance a runner to help the team proved invaluable in the team’s second-place finish this spring.

coach at the college spanning four decades from the ’60s to the ’90s; Hazel Leland with a shuttlecock in her ear; Les Vierra, former YVC head football coach who left the college about 1977 and went on to be a community college president at two institutions and lives in California, where he’s a higher education consultant; Bob Everson, head football coach at the college who joined the U. of Washington football staff in 1973 and eventually went to Spokane Community College as its coach; Bob passed away about 1989. Ken Edwards, longtime track and cross country coach and athletic trainer who still lives and plays golf in the Valley. Sitting in the chairs: Jane Black, department secretary who retired in 1986 and still lives in Yakima; Leslie Thompson, the college nurse at the time and one we have lost track of. On the floor: Yours truly, Jerry Ward as a 29-year-old p.e. instructor having fun running the intramural program at the college; Barbara McKenna, longtime p.e. and health education instructor who just passed away in 2008; Wayne Purdom, p.e. instructor and assistant football coach in 1972 who went on to be the college’s head football coach from 1974 until 1988. Wayne and his wife, Biz, passed away in 2009.

The stories are many and the memories even greater for this fun and professional physical education and athletic staff at YVC during this period from the late 1960s through the ’70s when there were as many as nine full-time instructors in the department under the capable leadership of Glenn Sherar. One can only imagine the number of students this group taught during their combined years at YVC. What we have lost during this period of removing physical education from the college curriculum has more than been made up in the extra pounds that are being carried around by the majority of obese Americans … sorry for the political comment. If your shorts fit, I apologize, but if a little snug….well, start walking, watch your diet, go to bed early, and go smell the roses!

Historical Section

As reported in our last newsletter, Hazel Leland passed away in February. We were able to attend two memorial functions for Hazel and were pleased to visit with Mary Sherar John and her husband, Hop, during the gathering at

the Yakima Elks Club. Mary’s father, Glenn Sherar was the longtime YVC athletic director and tennis and basketball coach who retired from the college in 1972, having served at the college since 1933. Mary brought a picture of Glenn’s physical education and athletic staff that was presented to him on the occasion of his retirement; this has stirred the memories of all those we have shared it with. We hope you enjoy this quick stroll down YVC physical education and sports memory lane.

Standing, left to right: Bill Downs, the affable equipment manager who passed away in the late 1970s; Bill Faller, baseball coach at the time who succeeded Glenn as athletic director; Ellwood Crosier, men’s and women’s basketball

First Hit – Home Plate Heroes

Sports Legend Event chair Nancy Leahy and Downtown Rotary Club of Yakima member created the June 10th weekly meeting program featuring Home Plate Heroes: 60 Years of Yakima Baseball. The program featured a PowerPoint montage of Parker Field and early teams playing ball in Yakima. Coaches Chuck “Bobo” Brayton, Bob Garretson, Jr., and Dave Edler. The three covered 60 years of experience at Parker Field on Yakima Valley Community College’s campus.

Coach Chuck Brayton led the YVC Indians from 1950-1961 capturing several state titles. The 1952 YJC team recorded a 23-4 season is just one example of the success YJC experienced under coach Brayton. Bobo moved on to coach Washington State University from 1961-

1994 where his teams won more games than any other Division I team. He is a member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame and Coaches Hall of Fame - a man with a memory of memorable experiences. Bobo remains a Cougar residing in Pullman.

Coach Bob Garretson, Jr., led YVCC to 8 State Championships and ended his Indian years with a .609 winning percentage. Bob was instrumental with the American Legion Beetles who played at Parker Field. He led the Beetles when they captured the 1975 & 1979 World Series Champions and

finished 3rd in 1988. Bob continues to be a part of the Yakima Valley and supports youth baseball events.

Eisenhower High School and Yakima Beetle baseball standout, Dave Edler was the 1975 American Legion Player of the Year. At WSU he earned All American in 1977. Dave coached the Beetle after a career with the Seattle Mariners from

1980-83. Dave spoke about his teammates and the importance of family as inspiration throughout his life. Dave continues to serve Yakima as a City Councilman and pastor at a local church.

For more photos and history of Parker Field, check out the Home Plate Heroes on the Foundation website (parkeryouthandsportsfoundation.org).

The June 11 sports legends event committee, under the leadership of Nancy Leahy, scored a hit with those in attendance. The event highlights are described below.

The weekend’s Honorary Chairman Mel Stottlemyre wowed the audience with stories of baseball and people. Enjoying the evening and holding innumerable conversations with new and old acquaintances, Mel was eloquent with his remarks as the featured speaker. Thank you, Mel and Jean, for gracing us with your presence.

Past Honorary Chairman Bobo Brayton shared snippets for the fourth year of the event’s five-year history. Thank you, Bobo and Eileen, for your continuing support.
