Celebrating Champions of the 60’sLargest Crowd Attends Sports Legends Reunion
Success can be measured in many ways – this year renewing of friendships sums up the weekend. The Sports Legends Reunion and High Hopes Tournament took a lot of work - work provided by many who were too young to live during the era of the celebrated teams and individuals. Celebrating the Class of ’65 was the theme of the weekend. The weekend topped the $25,000.00 profit mark for a fifth year. More businesses and individual contributors stepped up, providing new and interesting silent and live auction items and golf raffle opportunities.
Returning to the Yakima Valley Hotel and Conference Center, the Sports Legends Reunion was attended by 180+ supporters. Christy Baisinger provided music during the social hour while attendees mingled, excited to see familiar faces as well as people who were first-time attendees.
The Sports Legends Reunion Honored Guest was Eric Beardsley, outstanding track athlete and wrestler for Davis HS and Central Washington College. He was honored posthumously - representing Eric were his son Eric and daughter-in-law Pat.
High Hopes Honorary Co-Chairmen Steve Dale, Ted Wierman and Scott McDonald represented their state championship teams: Dale, Eisenhower football captain; Wierman, Davis basketball captain; and McDonald, Marquette basketball captain. Thank you to all of their family and classmates for attending.
Awards presented: Contributor of the Year, Kirk Tourtillotte; Parker Partner of the Year, Don Crook; Joe Donahue Memorial Scholarship Recipient, Diana Gil-Vargas; Faller/Brayton Endowment Coaches Award, Alec Chaney; Decade Award presented to six golfers who competed in all of the High Hopes tournaments: Bob McCulloch, Kirk Tourtillotte, Don Crook, Jay Gilbertson, Glen Shaw and Chris Pearson; the Yakima Valley Basketball Officials Association was selected as the Swede Lindquist Award recipient. The YVBOA then selected Felix Hernandez as its Official of the Year. A $1,000.00 award goes to the association to be used for the retention and training of new officials. The award is sponsored by Swede’s daughter and son-in-law Mary and Tom Herche.
The evening would not come together without the hours of work by those who support the foundation’s mission: Jenny Vogt, Becky Turner, Bob Romero, R.L. Heaverlo, Marci Hata, Pam Thierolf, Kathleen Johnson, Lupe Bell, Loxi Engebretson, Barbara Amstutz and Darlene Olmstead. Thank you to Bob Romero for serving as the master of ceremonies for the second time and R. L. Heaverlo, who served as the live auctioneer for the fourth time.

SPORTS LEGENDS REUNION
SCOTT MCDONALD, TED WIERMAN AND STEVE DALE
2 Letter from the PresidentI believe all will agree we have
had a very good year (2014-2015). Our Parker Partner membership has reached 261 and continues to grow.
The Parker Faller Improve-ment Committee assisted in the dedication of the YVCC Parker field’s renaming in honor of Bill Faller for all the years of service to baseball and education. The committee raised funds and in-kind
donations that have been used to make many improvements to the ball field, The project is ongoing with a completion date of spring 2016. We are very appreciative of all the members who have served on the committee.
The goal of displaying historical materials in our office and in the Larson Building entrance display cases is being handled by past president Jerry Ward. Jerry continues to collect many historical pictures and articles that show the importance of sports in the Yakima Valley. As the displays are changed, I am sure we all will have pride in where we have been. The Valley continues to develop great athletes.
We just completed our fundraising projects. The Sports Legends Reunion raised over $11,000.00 through a variety of auctions -- funds that will help fund grants for our youth. I was happy to serve on the committee with Brenda Moore, Trudy Bray and Virginia Hays. The support staff was also instrumental in making this a successful event:.
On Saturday, the High Hopes Golf Tournament was successful – with perfect weather. The chair for this event was Eric Carlson. Committee members included Spud Edmondson, Sam Karr, Virginia Hays and me. They did a great job of organizing the tournament. The support staff was also instrumental in making this a successful event: Jenny Vogt, Ken Sauby, Barbara Amstutz, Darlene Olmstead, Rena Aumavae and many other volunteers helped getting the tournament up and running. Yes, it takes a team to host a successful event. Thanks to all of you who contributed to that weekend in making another successful event for PY&SF. See the budgets on page 6 for an accounting.
The Foundation is beginning its eleventh year and it’s time to elect officers and board members. We have our Nominating Committee with Bob Alexander, Sam Karr and Bill Faller serving. This could be a very important year for all who are Parker Partners. We want PY&SF to continue to grow and support the Yakima Valley in the preservation of parks, sports facilities and athletic programs. Please contact a member of the nominating committee if you know of any individuals who have expressed an interest in being a Parker Partner or on the board.
Our Annual Meeting is planned for October 21st, and I encourage you to attend the meeting as you are important to the future of the Foundation. It will be held at Jackson’s Sports Bar at 48th and Tieton. See page 3 for details.
See you at the annual meeting.Jon, President
Joe Donahue Memorial Scholarship Recipient Repeats
The 2015-16 Joe Donahue Memorial Scholarship recipient is another two-year selection, Diana Gil-Vargas. Diana graduated in 2013 from Eisenhower High School did such an outstanding job last year that she was approved to again receive the JDMS. She returns this fall, working toward an AA degree before transferring to a four-year institution.
Alec Chaney 6th Faller/Brayton Coaches Award Recipient
This year’s recipient of the Brayton-Faller Endowment Scholarship is Alec Chaney, a freshman outfielder from Skyview High School in Vancouver, WA.

and doubles (11).For his efforts, Chaney was named to the All-East Region
first team and All-NWAC second team.Chaney’s father, Bruce, is a YVCC alum who played
for Coach Faller during the 1976 and 1977 seasons. He continued his career at Washington State University, where he played for Coach Brayton in 1978 and 1979. In a five-year professional career he played in the minor leagues for the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians, making it as high as AA.
Alex plans to earn his AA in graphic design from YVCC and continue his baseball career at a four-year institution.
PY&SF 3nd Annual Scholastic AwardFive Valley High Schools Honored
For the third time the PY&SF presented five valley high schools with scholastic awards in the amount of $300 each at the Yakima Valley Sports Awards ceremony. Mike Carey of the Yakima Valley Sports Commission provided academic and team sports performance data from the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association for the foundation to create the scholastic award.
PY&SF created five classifications for the scholastic award, deciding to recognize schools in the 1B, 2B, 1A, 2A and 4A categories. High schools receiving the award were Eisenhower, Ellensburg, Zillah, White Swan and Riverside Christian.
3Roll CallParker Partners Membership Drive
Thank you for renewing or joining the Foundation as a Parker Partner. Each contribution frees up funds to support grant requests allowing more youth people the opportunity to play a sport that hopefully will contribute to the development of skills and life’s positive attributes.
These are the latest additions to the Parker Partner renewals and several omissions from the master list published in the spring newsletter. The editor apologizes to those who renewed (bold) in the fall but were not included in the last issue. The total is now 286.
The Parker Partner Membership Drive for 2016 will begin in November. 5Memorials We are honored to remember those who have passed. Many have been Parker Partners and shared our mission throughout their lives.
In memory of Betty Baker, who in 1950 started a softball team called the Apple Queens. They went on that year to win the state title. She played on the Webcats and the Yakima Applets as the pitcher. Betty played softball for many years to follow, with great success. She also was an accomplished bowler. Betty also excelled in golf, playing at Riverside in Yakima, which was later purchased by
the Elks Golf and Country Club. She was a lifetime member of the Elks.
Dorothy Brink Jerry Ward
In memory of Chuck Bohoskey, who graduated in 1961 from Eisenhower High School, where he lettered all three years in football and track. Chuck graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor’s degree in business. Chuck began his career in the investment business by joining Walston & Co.’s Yakima office in 1967. He continued his
work as a financial advisor throughout his entire adult life. He was responsible for opening in 1994 the Dain Bosworth Yakima branch that is now RBC Wealth Management. He leaves a legacy of enduring friendships with colleagues and clients.
Spud & Gay Edmondson
In memory of Bobo Brayton, legendary WSU Cougar baseball coach, remembered as a down-to-earth man who taught young men the game of baseball and life.
Dell & Patricia Boswell John & Marriel Rowley Bill Faller Edward Sage Cathy Kania Linda Stevens Gary Kendall Jerry & Lynn Ward Neil & Iris Manning D.A. & Jennifer Woodkey Tom & Bonnie Prediletto
In memory of Fern Donahue, raised five children before working full time in the family photoengraving business. She and Joe had a loving 73-year marriage during which they enjoyed their 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Fern was the organist at her church for over 20 years.
D.A. & Jennifer Woodkey
In memory of Pete Orgill, where athletics would be a central part of Pete’s life, as he was a great athlete and played baseball at both Yakima Valley College and Central Washington State College. During this time, he developed a great love for education and the game of baseball. He was a passionate educator, and as a coach he was driven to help
kids learn to play the game and show them how dedication, commitment and being part of a team could help them in all aspects of their lives.
Bill Faller Jerry Ward Virginia Hays
In memory of Leora White, whose determined, independent nature served her children well. Her quiet nature continued into her adult years, and baking was one of her ways of showing her love. She made the best pies, cinnamon rolls and potato rolls. The grandkids were just as lucky and never knew a cookie jar without a cookie waiting for them in it. Leora was all about family.
Jerry Ward
In memory of Lyle Woolf, a three-sport letterman before playing football at WSU and would always remain a WSU football fan. Eventually moving to Yakima in 1963, Lyle “Smiley” served the pharmacy needs of the community as the owner of Woolf’s Drug. He later became an active member of the Yakima Elks Golf Club.

Fundraiser Weekend Wrap“Thank you” goes to our High Hopes Honorary Co-
Chairmen Steve Dale, Ted Wierman and Scott McDonald who represented the three state championship teams as we Celebrated the Class of ’65 this year. They were well chosen as leaders on the field in 1964-65 and continued Friday night with their remarks. Thank you to the High Hopes golf committee of Sam Karr, Virginia Hays, Jon Mulvenon and Spud Edmondson for all their hard work without which the event would not be possible. As usual, thanks have to go to Bill Faller for coordinating past YVC baseball players into returning to support our efforts, as well as to Virginia for organizing 10 teams. Our High Hopes scramble was another success, largely due to the huge efforts of those who volunteer at the golf course behind the scenes to help make the event possible. Special thanks to Kevin Anderson, head professional, Mary Marquez, head caterer, and the entire staff of the Apple Tree Resort for their assistance in providing us a first-class golf resort in our own backyard.
On behalf of the High Hopes golf committee, thank you to all those who supported our fundraising weekend and High Hopes golf event. Without the funds the public provides through our two main events, the Sports Legends Reunion and High Hopes golf tournament, our grants and core mission would not be possible. There are a lot of youth sports dreams and experiences coming true because of the support we receive.
We are always open to your ideas, contacts and future expertise in creating a better product. If you have an idea to share, want to help us run an existing event or have an idea for a new fall event, please contact us. We need quality people to help us produce quality events.
