Facts• The African elephant is the largest
land animal in the world• The elephants weigh (on average)
6000kg = 6.6 tons and measure up to 3.3 metres = 10ft
• The massive ears help them in the hot African climate , the ears cool
them down when its really hot
About their trunks • Their trunks are about 7 ft long • It’s so strong it can kill a lion stone
dead with one hit • If the elephant has too much water
and it’s going on a journey it stores 4.5 litres of water for the journey
ahead
lifespan• The males lifespan is 60yrs to
85yrs , the oldest male elephant was 110yrs old
• The females lifespan id 50yrs to 75yrs , the oldest female elephant
was 85yrs old

Their feet• It’s feet are really spongy on the
bottom and it has 4 or 6 toenails• The spongy bit absorbs the water
and takes the impact of its stride • If they step on thorny sticks or
briars it will hurt them as it does not go into the foot
Skin • The skin looks really tough but it’s
not, it’s really sensitive • They cover themselves in mud and
dust to keep the pests off them• The mud and dust also help by blocking off the U.V. light rays from
the sun
Sense of smell and hearing• The African elephant is the only
elephant and animal who can smell up to 50 miles
• Their hearing is also like their sense of smell. No other animal has it ,
the only difference is their hearing it can go up to 25 miles away which is
half of the sense of smell
