The vocate VOLUME II, ISS1JE TWELVE WTLLIAM & MARY SCHOOL OF LAW

Congratulations Class of 2005! Dear Class of 2005,

It seems only yesterday that I stood in the Law School 's front hall on a Sunday afternoon in August 2003 , welcoming you and handing out green & yellow bumper stickers emblazoned William & Mary: America 's First Law SchooL It also seems only yesterday when the news came on another Sunday afternoon that your classmate Betsy John had died. Betsy was a vibrant presence during her brief time in our midst. The cherry tree planted in her memory is blooming outside the North Wing as I write this message.

You have been a "cando" class. To cite just a few examples among vast possibilities, Java City exists thanks to you. The SBA and PSF have done wonders. Your class was one of the driving forces behind our new Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP). You 've enriched the fabric ofthe community - for instance, Thanksgiving food drives, Toys for Tots, Red Cross blood drives, household/clothing collections for Avalon, the Iraqi school supply effort, the Head Start book drive, and campus bone marrow campaigns. The 34th running of the Spong Moot Court Tournament was an especially glittering

iteration ofthis long running series. The Law Review ranked 20th this year amid the nation 's teeming law journals, and it published six issues for the first year ever. The Trial Team came fully into its own in 2004/05 , winning against all odds. BLSA gave the Law School a magnificent grandfather clock in memory of the fiftieth anniversary of Brown v. Board. The George Wythe Society provided photos for our walls of the eleven buildings where W &M law classes have been held over the centuries. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

You've studied together, played

together, and stuck together to an unusual degree, even in our collegial halls. And you have great timing - arriving after the North Wing was built, being on hand when the elegant Spong Classroom replaced the dog-eared room 119, getting away from here before the library construction becomes disruptive, and being 3Ls during the 225th year of the Law School 's life.

During Opening Rites for your class in Phi Beta Kappa Hall thirtytwo months ago, I mentioned that your relationship with the Law School would last for a relatively brief time on campus and then Continued on pg. 14

ORDER OF THE COIF

The Order of the Coif is a national scholastic honor society in law. Its purpose is "to foster a spirit of careful study and to mark in a fitting manner those who have attained a high grade of scholarship" in the study of law. The English Order of the Coif was the most ancient and one of the most honored institutions of the common law. Its origins may antedate the Norman Conquest. The American Order of the Coif was founded in 1912. Membership in it is the highest academic honor a law student may achieve. It is equivalent to membership in Phi Beta Kappa for undergraduates, recognizing the scholastic achievement of students selected from the upper ten percent of their class.

The class of 2005 (and their parents and loved ones) should

know what a great pleasure it is to have gotten to know you

over the last three years- you're smart, focuseol, and ambitious.

You're also nice, pretty funny sometimes, easy-to-work-with, and

VERY multi-talented. It's easy to think of you. only as Securi

ties Regulation students, SBA leaders, Legal Skills TAs, Moot

Court advocates, Bar Review stand-outs, or whatever, within

our walls. But we know you are so much more than that-poets,

world-travelers, and community volunteers. Tough competitors.

Thoughtful peacemakers. Such interesting people, even without

a law degree. So here's the bottom line-we will miss you!

Jayne W Barnard

Your spirit al11bition, intelligence, and caring attitude will take you far. Forthose who were partofthe Therapeutic Jurisprudence experience, remember our motto! To all of you that I have come to know, you have my sincerest best wishes for a healthy and happy future.

Professor Baker

The Legal Skills Program extends sincere appreciation to our graduating Junior Partners. You have made this a remarkable year with your talents, good humor and collegiality. Katie Aidala, Chris Barker, Caroline Fleming, Stacy Haney, Claire Maddox, John Mills, Mike Monahan, Maria Mullarkey Burakiewicz, Mark Ohrenberger, Elizabeth Peiffer, Kristina Rozek, Kimberly Smolenyak, Benjamin Willoughby.

YOU WILL BE MISSED!

Claire Maddox - we have been proud to be your partners. Thank you for your extraordinary efforts anticipating the needs of your students and your partners, diligently handling any work sent your way, always offering to lend a hand. Good luck as you embark on your new partnership track!

- Jim and Patty

The Academic Support Program wishes to thank the graduating Teaching Assistants:

Rosa Evergreen, Davin Hall, Jrunes Lanqan, narie Siesseqer, AriSta Sims, Kelly Street,

and Hilary Weckstein.

Your energy and expertise have helped countless students!

As lawyers you will have power over your clients. As judges you will have power over both sides. As public officials you will have power over many people. As teachers you will have power over your students. You will have power over your children, and perhaps over your aging parents. Your use, or abuse, of these powers will define the content of your character.
