Hungerford’s Bellman and Town Crier Robin Tubb died on Tuesday after a brief illness.
As the longest-serving crier in the world, he was one of the town’s most senior and respected citizens. He held the post of Town Crier for nearly 55 years from 1957. In 2006 and 2006 he was Constable of the Town and Manor and held the position of trustee and Buildings Secretary. He was the fourth generation of his family to hold the post of Bellman following in the footsteps of his great grandfather Edward Bushnell, Uncle Sid Bushnell and his mother Jean Tubb, spanning 127 years of family service. Records of Hungerford Town Criers go back to 1658.
Robin Tubb leves his wife June and sons Gary and Andrew and brother Brian.

Hungerford faced an exciting year of opportunities, the mayor Cr Martin Crane said in an optimistic new year’s message to councillors at their meeting on Tuesday night.
He said there were challenges ahead and these would be faced with the co-operation of West Berkshire Council.
Cr Crane said it was signifi cant that bridges of co-operation had and were being built between the council and other municipal organisations and clubs.
HUNGERFORD FACES EXCITING YEAR OF OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
Hungerford Town Council was continuing to act prudently on behalf of ratepayers, Tuesday’s council meeting was told.
Chairman of the council’s fi nance and general purposes committee Cr Rupert Thompson confi rmed that the council would hold its precept this year.
He said a project overspend of £5050 could be necessary and this could be taken from the council’s reserves.
The mayor, Cr Martin Crane emphasised that in hard times, the council was not putting extra pressure on ratepayers.

When, at eighteen, I left home in a North Yorkshire village for University life in London and then, hopefully, an academic career, my father gave me various items of worldly advice
which included ‘Stay away from doctors and lawyers!’ In the sense that he meant it, I have managed to do both to a remarkable degree in view of my circumstances.
At 97, which included fi ve war years in the Army, I can recall only one night spent in hospital and that was just for a bad nose-bleed. However, when I became, among other things, the medical correspondent of the Daily Express, I had to meet leading doctors and surgeons in line of duty but the more I learned about them the more determined I became to stay out of their medical clutches.
On the legal front, I have weathered sixty years of journalism and authorship of a nature which put me in frequent peril of being sued for libel which, happily, never happened. However, I have to admit that it was my personal friendship with certain lawyers which helped me to avoid the clutches of others in their profession. The most important was the resident offi ce lawyer who happened to be a fi shing friend. Every Fleet Street newspaper employed a full-time lawyer to check written copy before it was printed and I never submitted anything without fi rst having it cleared by my friend. Sometimes a simple change of wording eliminated the libel risk.
Labour MPs were the biggest libel threat to me, especially when I was attacking their leader, Harold Wilson. He employed a particularly formidable lawyer, called Arnold Goodman, who, while he never got around to suing me, managed to prevent publication of several important scoops of mine by telephoning my Editor and threatening dire consequences.
Though frequently libelled myself, especially by the magazine, Private Eye, I refrained from action mainly on the advice of another legal friend, a libel lawyer called Peter Carter-Ruck, who warned me
‘Always remember that going to law is like going to war : the only certainty is the cost’. The more I thought about that wisdom the more I took the warning to heart. Also, I felt that those, like myself who, almost daily, dished out criticism of others should take any against themselves on the chin. However, there came a time when I was ordered to institute libel proceedings by my boss – Sir Max Aitken, the son of Lord Beaverbrook. My intended victim was none other than Private Eye.
In those less technological days, to make a London telephone call from a country home it was necessary to call the local exchange and state the required number. The number of the Daily Express was Fleet Street 8000 and, one day, quite inadvertently, the exchange man put me through to Fleet Street 3000, which happened to be the number of the Daily Mail. I asked for the News Editor and found myself talking to our fi ercest competitor. I – and he - quickly realized the situation and I ended the call with laughter on both sides.
At that time the Daily Mail employed a spiteful gossip columnist, called Nigel Dempster, who also supplied tit-bits to Private Eye which printed a statement that Sir Max Aiken ought to know that Chapman Pincher, one of his most highly paid journalists, was trying to sell information to the Daily Mail on the side. After I had explained the facts to Sir Max and secured a statement from the telephone exchange admitting its error, he insisted that I must sue Private Eye for libel. I did so and the magazine stumped up £1000 damages – then a substantial sum, most of which provided what my wife has always called ‘the Private Eye mink coat’.
I recall some further advice from my beloved father – ‘Keep away from slow horses and fast women!’. I have managed to evade the slow horses.

Hungerford made amends for their disappointing New Year’s Eve defeat at Wimborne, by starting the New Year with an exciting win over local rivals Thatcham.
Although Hungerford put in some pressure early on, the Thatcham defence stood fi rm and a good break down the left caught out the Hungerford defence and Carl Self cut inside to slip the ball past the exposed Daniel Lincoln after 20 minutes. The Hungerford forwards thought that they had equalized when the ball hit the underside of the bar, some claimed that it had hit the net, but there was no response from the linesman and Thatcham survived until the interval. With the slope in their favour, Hungerford attacked strongly after the interval and Mark Draycott equalized from Jamie Gosling’s corner after 51 minutes, and
then converted a free-kick, Gosling again being the supplier, after 59 minutes.
There was little between the sides for the remainder of the game as Thatcham tried desperately to level, but the home side held on to seure a valuable win which kept them in second place.

HUNGERFORD JOINERY A FAMILY RUN BUSINESS
Hungerford Town Council will be part of a critical community partnership meeting tonight, Friday, January 6, aiming to keep the John O’Gaunt
Community Centre open.Tuesday’s council meeting was told by Cr Roger Thompson
that it was vital in moving forward to determine lease terms before building a proper business plan to present to West Berkshire Council.
The decision on lease terms had to come from West Berkshire Council and this decision appeared to have become a “hot potato” that someone would have to stand up to.
If progress was not made, the centre would be boarded up on April 1 and this would be a severe blow to the town.
VITAL MEETING TONIGHT ON JOG COMMUNITY CENTRE
Work began on Wednesday to take down Hungerford’s Christmas lights and trees.
“Father Christmas Lights”, Rod Desmeules told the Adviser, the lights took three weeks to erect and it was aimed to take them down in three days.
Once again the lights proved a magnifi cent spectacle, probably the best of its kind in the district.
The decorative Christmas trees will be shredded on Sunday. At Tuesday’s Hungerford Town Council meeting Cr Roger
Thompson described the lights as “fantastic”.

If you want to know what councillors are going to be discussing – the town council website has the Agenda posted in good time, you can come and listen to the
discussions, as every meeting is held in public. At the discretion of the Councillor chairing the meeting and if time allows, you may be asked if you would like to express an opinion. Says Cllr. Rich Pitts, Chair of this committee, “Getting people involved in the decision making process is a good way to ensure the town refl ects the residents’ wishes”. Public attendance, often sparse at meetings, is welcomed by local councillors. -Val Compton

ADP EMPLOYEES CLIMBCOTOPAXI VOLCANOThree ADP employees, two from Hungerford and one from South Africa have just returned from Ec-uador having successfully climbed to the top of Co-topaxi, the highest currently-active volcano in the world. Geordie Taylor, Euan Smith and Steve Rob-inson reached the 19,347 feet summit (5,897m) at dawn on Wednesday 21st September having climbed the last 4,000ft through the night. The fi nal ascent is made over the glaciers that cover Cotopaxi’s peak, an almost symmetrical cone. The volcano has erupted more than 50 times in the last 300 years. The ascent over the glacier required night-lights, crampons, ropes and ice-axes. Under the supervision of experi-enced Andean guides, the three negotiated the treach-erous crevasses, ice walls and thin air in wind-chilled temperatures as low as minus-30 degrees-C. ADP has kindly donated £1,000 to Hungerford’s Rotary Club in recognition of their achievements. The same three adventurers reached the summit of Kilimanjaro in 2008 and kayaked down the Zambezi River in 2010.

26th October 2011: Dr Hugh Pihlens – “From Latvia to Hungerford”Over a hundred members of the Hungerford Histori-cal Association were treated to an excellent talk by Dr Hugh Pihlens last Wednesday night. Dr Pihlens was a very popular and highly respected GP in Hungerford for all his professional life but his talk focused on his family links with Latvia. His grandfather had been a Latvian nationalist revo-lutionary in the early 20th century and had to escape in the hold of a German cargo ship from the Russian police and their bayonets. Eventually as a non-English speaking Protestant refugee he arrived in England and was befriended by a Church of England vicar and given employment and sanctuary by the vicar’s family. He met and married an English girl and they settled down in the West Country where Dr Pihlens was born. A wonderful story much appreciated by the audience, a lot of whom resolved to research their own family his-tory.The next talk will be given by The Countess of Car-narvon “Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey” on Wednesday, November 23rd at 7.30pm in the Corn Exchange, Hungerford. -Shelagh Parry

“Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey”.Over 150 members and guests of the Hungerford His-torical Association were treated to an excellent talk by the Countess of Carnarvon on her latest book which tells the story of Lady Almina, who was married to the 5th Earl of Carnarvon. Lady Almina established a hospital for wounded offi cers at Highclere during the First World War. She nursed the offi cers herself and “treated them like the best people in the world”. Dur-ing her research Lady Carnarvon found a number of personal letters from servicemen and their families in the Castle’s archives. One read “thank you for all you did for my son – my husband got to his bedside before he died” The 5th Earl was a keen photographer and took a great many photos during his14 years excavating in Egypt with Howard Carter. The tomb of Tutankhamun was found in 1922 just before the Earl’s money ran out. A number of artefacts from the tomb are housed in the museum of Cairo, and there is also a collection if items at Highclere. Her talk was full of very humorous anecdotes dealing with larger than life characters. A really excellent eve-ning enjoyed by the audience. The next talk will be given by Canon Alan Deboo “The Railways and Society in Victorian England” on Wednesday, January 25th 2012 at 7.30pm in the Corn

MARLBOROUGH THEATRE’S GREAT LINE-UPThe Theatre on the Hill, at the heart of the new St John’s school on Granham Hill in Marlborough, is now in its second season and thriving, This Autumn and into 2012 the theatre is offering with a full and varied pro-gramme of events appealing to a broad cross-section of the local population.Well-known names, including BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards double winners Show of Hands, described by The Independent as “a class act”, and a touring West-End style show Let’s Do The Twist are certain to attract large audiences, although the top selling show this Au-tumn will undoubtedly be the St John’s student produc-tion of Thoroughly Modern Millie. The 350-seat theatre is growing in popularity among a diverse and eclectic range of theatre companies and performers from across the UK, as well as providing a venue for performances and events for local communi-ty groups. In addition to school productions including Thoroughly Modern Millie, the star turn of the Autumn Season is perhaps Let’s Do the Twist on 14 October. The West End-style show, described as “electrifying” showcases music from the greatest musical stars of the 1950s and 60s Rock ‘n’ Roll era wrapped up in a Happy Days family style feel. This hugely successful show has already been snapped up by Impresario Bill Kenwright for a week at the Theatre Royal in Windsor. Kate O’Connor, Events Organiser at St John’s, expects this to be a sell-out evening. “We are very lucky to have been able to get a date in Marlborough on their tour. I’m sure it is going to be a fun fi lled, lively evening”Other highlights of the season include a 2010 BBC Ra-dio 2 Folk Awards double winners Show of Hands on 26 October, organised by Marlborough Folk Roots as part of a tour which culminates in a sell-out concert at the Royal Albert Hall in April next year. The phenom-enally popular duo Steve Knightley and Phil Beer hail from rock backgrounds but today their engaging music dips and dives through roots, rock, blues, country and traditional genres to make an unmistakable signature sound played out on a wealth of instruments from slide guitar to mandocello, fi ddle to South American cuatro.Theatrical performances include the highly acclaimed Icarus Theatre Collective with their bold and exciting performance of Macbeth, Shakespeare’s most bloody and fear-fi lled tragic “Scottish Play” on 16 November and Proteus Theatre Company’s Arabian Nights on January 27, a magical journey to the Far East in the company of Scheherazade.

Have Your Say The four day exhibition and consultation in the town hall plus leafl ets, ensure everyone is included and can have their say. Alternatively you can visit the town council website at marlboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk/con-sultationAn application for planning permission will have to be made, that will only happen if there is suffi cient pub-lic support and will provide further opportunity for comment. Guy Loosmore added, “It would be sad if we continued excluding the public from their building, whilst they pay for the upkeep. I want to see it brought to life and used daily as a vibrant focal point for the community and its visitors, not just kept as a beautiful white elephant”. -Val Compton

Your Minor Injuries Unit just moved further away With no consultation and causing much confusion, treatment for “non-urgent minor injuries” will no longer be available at Clover Centre based in Great Western Hospital (GWH). The information was clearly stated in a “Mister Men style” booklet, produced by NHS Swindon and delivered by post today. The information is abso-lutely contrary to NHS Swindon’s Annual Report of 2009/10 which stated Clover centre offered “treatment for minor injuries and minor illnesses without an appointment, 24 hours a day and seven days a week”. It is also contrary to NHS Wiltshire’s leafl et on Minor Injury Units (MIU) which states Clover Centre can be used if it is more convenient to attend there rather than Chippenham or Trowbridge MIUs. It would seem now, that only “urgent” cases will be seen and treated in what is now called the Urgent Care Ser-vice at GWH – everyone else will be re-directed to the Carfax NHS Medical Centre or their GP. The booklet fails to tell you how to fi nd this obscure centre in Carfax St, fails to tell you it has about 3 car parking spaces and also fails to tell you if you have a suspected fracture, there is no X-ray facility on the premises, which would be required for a diagnosis. The withdrawal of a standard minor injury service, such as we used to receive in Savernake Hospital, is a sub-stantive change – and that requires a public consultation to be held. Did I miss it? -Val compton.Flashmob in Waitrose (Note to Ed – fi rst para only will stand alone plus website address if poss!)
SOUND OF SUPERMARKET MUSICAnyone shopping in Waitrose on Saturday afternoon was in for a surprise. Marlborough Community Choir sprung another fl ashmob on staff and customers (with permission of the management of course) and launched into a rous-ing seasonal song. Somewhere between the Deli/ Fruit & Veg departments, fi rst a single voice rang out, joined by another half a dozen and on the song went into three harmonizing parts. Customers stopped shopping for a moment and stood and smiled at the “impromptu” performance which they also applauded enthusiastically. Marlborough Community Choir has now been running for a year and regularly gives concerts to raise money for charity. If you missed them this time, they will be performing again in Waitrose on Dec 17th, having taken part in a concert on the Dec 10th and sung in two local Residential Care Homes on Dec 12th, a busy time of year. Vanessa Lafaye, who runs the choir that is open for anyone to join (no auditions and no ability to read music necessary) is a believer in singing for the sheer joy of singing together. Everyone is welcome to come and try the choir at the fi rst session of the new term on 11th Jan. – especially people of the male persuasion!
