North Bengal is truly a treasure hunt for the nature lovers, especially for those who are looking for a periodical escape from the hectic chores of the modern city life. Lying in the Northern half of the State of West Bengal and encircled by international boundaries of Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh, North Bengal offers a unique combination of varied landscape – from high mountainous region in the extreme north to the vast Gangetic plains in the extreme south.

Tourist Places in North Bengal
Dooars: The place where

of Jalpaiguri. Lying in the

Kurseong: Kurseong, (also called “Kharshang” in Nepali) “THE
LAND OF WHITE ORCHIDS”, is undoubtedly an attractive
tourist destination. It was in 1835 when the monarch of Sikkim
had gifted Kurseong to the British Empire. The name is said to
be derived from the lepcha word “KURSEONGRIP” referring to
small white orchids, prolific in the entire region. The quaint
little town is nestled in the birch of thick forests (approx 45kms
North of Siliguri and 30 kms south of Darjeeling). Nature plays
a vital role towards the picturesque beauty of Kurseong. The
Road from Siliguri to Kurseong runs through thick forests and
tea gardens where one can experience the fragrance of fresh
tea being processed along the roadside factories. Kurseong is
also nicknamed as school town as there are a lot of schools like
Goethals Memorial, St Helens, Victoria and Downhill that were
built during the colonial period.
Kalimpong: Kalimpong is the famous district of Darjeeling in
West Bengal state and it is located on a ridge which faces the
Teesta river of West Bengal, this place is a major tourist
location due to its imminence beauty. It is a renowned tourist
spot. Apart from natural glory the silent valleys of Kalimpong is
very rich in heritage and religion. Never miss to visit West
Bengal Tourist Places. The word Kalimpong means “Ridge
where we play” and ‘black spur’ in local tribal language.
Mirik: Mirik – a nest in the hills is West Bengal’s one of the hill
resorts at an altitude of 1767 metres with its own special
charms – 49 km. from Darjeeling and 52 km. from Siliguri. 1.25
km. Long lake is fed by perennial streams. A floating fountain in
the middle of the lake is a joy forever and very often you may
find the glory of Kanchenjungha reflected in the lake waters. A
rich forest with thousands of Cryptomaria-Japanica trees
clothes the slopes on the west. A 3.5 km. zigzag footwalk takes
you along the lake – a sleek foot bridge connects the garden on
the east with the woods on the west.

Darjeeling is 100 Kilometers, Kalimpong is 68 kilometers,
Lataguri is 90 kilometers, Buxa is 200 kilometers and Cooch
Behar is 230 kilometers from Bagdogra Airport (IXB) which is
served by regular Indian, Go Air, Kingfisher, Spice Jet and Jet
Airways flights from Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai and Delhi.
Roadways: National highway number 31A connects Sikkim
and Kalimpong to Siliguri; National highway 55 connects
Darjeeling and Kurseong and National highway number 31
connects Guwahati with Siliguri and it passes through the
middle of the Dooars connecting all the major places of Dooars.
Railways: Nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri
railway station (NJP). Darjeeling is 100 Kilometers, Kalimpong
is 95 kilometers, Lataguri is 90 kilometers, Buxa is 200
kilometers and Cooch Behar is 230 kilometers from New
Jalpaiguri railway station (NJP) / Bagdogra Airport (IXB).
Railway stations at Darjeeling town, Kurseong, Malbazar,
Rajabhatkhawa, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar are also nearby but
the frequency of train is better from NJP.
