The advantage of EHR system development brings hope for EHR development in India

As per latest findings, it has been found out that the use of advanced EHRs has drastically reduced the cost of patients undergoing treatment in hospitals by as much as 10%. A research was done at the medical university of South Carolina, where it was observed after the detailed research that hospitals that use advanced EHR system development, there the patient’s cost of hospital expenses were reduced to as much as 9.66 percent; in fact cost per patient was $731.

Another detailed study was conducted and was published in American Journal of Managed Care; here a research was conducted looking at the records of 5 million patients who were treated at 550 U.S. hospitals. Out of these only 19 percent of these patients were treated by the advanced EHR system, the study conducted defines this as stage 3 level of the EHR implementation that also includes CPOE as well as clinical decision support.

By these studies and research made, it was concluded that expensive investment made in the EHR development system is really worth as it reduces the patient’s cost drastically.

There are various previous studies that have proved beyond doubt that EHRs have improved the quality as well as safety of patient care in hospitals. The cost saving shown in this study provides great advantage and also motivates as well as builds the business for the hospital. This makes room for large investments of adopting as well as maintaining the EHR system.

Almost 80% of respondents had reported that the multiple core measures as well as safety benefits from the implementation of advanced EHRs in the survey conducted by the Healthcare Information and Management System Society and The Advisory Board. This study also polled 33 hospitals, which had achieved the stages 6 and 7 of the EMR adoption model (EMRAM) scale.

However, since there are exceptions to rule, a study that was regarding adult outpatients at Brigham and Women’s hospital and affiliated ambulatory practices did not find any association between quality care and meaningful use.

Some critics calling for an end to the meaningful use of the program. In the middle of hospitals’ difficulty in attesting the stage 2 requirements, the colleges of healthcare information management executives (CHIME) recently lauded a latest facility in the rule that included the expansion of choice on the certified system along with the option to attest by using 2013 definition of the clinical quality measures in 2014.

Considering all these reports and findings, it has been concluded that if the EHR development in India is taken seriously then it will add a huge benefit to patients and this must be taken seriously.
