This fall Adrian College made history yet again by welcoming over 650 new students to campus raising the campus total to just above 1700. This record-breaking class size is part of an ongoing recruiting process that began approximately seven years ago when Jeffrey Docking became president of Adrian College. President Docking’s goal was to restructure the recruiting process in an attempt to help the college rise out of the recruitment recession it had previously endured. Through the hard work and determination dedicated by all who play an active role on campus, we are succeeding.

Though the number alone is impressive, the class can be recognized for more than its record-breaking size. Approximately one-third of the freshman class is from out of state, which includes a significant

The Adrian Standard was created for the purpose of enhancing the flow of communication from the Enrollment organization to all members of the Adrian College community.

The Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, and Marketing & Publications have been engaged in several projects designed to enhance Adrian College recruitment and promotional activities. Our hope is to utilize this publication as a vehicle to provide the community with useful information regarding the organization’s activities; and, we hope to illustrate how these efforts strategically support our overall enrollment structure. Furthermore, we hope you will find much of this information useful as you come in contact with potential, and current, Adrian College students.

I encourage your feedback regarding the topics covered in this newsletter. Additionally, should you have suggestions for future topics, please feel free to contact me with your ideas at extension 4029 or [email protected].

number of students from Canada as well as three students from China. In addition, the academic standards of the new class are higher than ever with the most amount of freshmen with an ACT composite score of 25 or higher. This freshman class is not only helping Adrian’s campus to grow in number, but it also helps the college to grow intellectually and culturally.

The Vice President for Enrollment, Dr. Frank Hribar, and the Director for Admissions, Erin VanDerworp, credit the successful recruiting year to all faculty and staff stating, “We are all part of a team, and everyone plays a key role in ensuring that prospective students experience the best that Adrian College has to offer. Without the dedication and extensive hours of work contributed by our faculty and staff we would not be where we are today in terms of enrollment. We are appreciative of all that they do.” The Office of Admissions hopes this recruitment year will prove to be as successful as the last and looks forward to the year to come.

Counselors Go Beyond the Office

During the fall semester, the Adrian College Admissions staff is faced with the task of recruiting potential new students and encouraging seniors around the country to apply to Adrian. Though this is one of the Admissions staff’s main jobs throughout the entire year, it is during this time that the counselors and other members in the office exceed the limits of their normal duties to ensure successful recruiting. In addition to meeting with prospective students and their families in the office, and conducting tours of campus, Admissions Counselors are on the road visiting high schools and attending college fairs in an attempt to bring the Adrian College experience to students.

Adrian’s Admissions Counselors spend approximately two months, beginning in mid-September and concluding in

mid-November, traveling to schools and fairs all throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Counselors are each given a territory in which they are required to recruit, and depending on the size and past success of each territory, they are given a target goal to reach by the end of the recruiting year. During this time, counselors are typically out of the office recruiting Monday through Thursday (at times they are also traveling on the weekends). While visiting with high schools, counselors’ duties range from meeting with students one on one to conducting a presentation to the entire senior class in the school’s auditorium. Every college fair attended is slightly different from the next. Some are small gatherings in a high school gymnasium while others are national fairs with over 10,000 attendees. One such event is held in Chicago, Illinois.

Travel season takes Admissions Counselors throughout the region to recruit future Bulldogs

This is the most critical time for the Admissions staff, and “travel season” can be viewed as the kick off to the recruiting year. Students do visit campus on their own, but for those that do not, the Admissions staff sets out to bring a piece of Adrian College to them. Now is the time that high school seniors are applying to college and deciding where to spend the next chapter of their lives; it is the mission of our Admissions Counselors and staff to show students that Adrian College is the right choice. Now is when the staff’s passion for their careers and for Adrian College plays a key role in the impact on the college’s success with prospective students. The Admissions staff goes beyond the office to ensure that Adrian College does in fact achieve these goals.

Bulldog 101, formerly referred to as Acquaintance Day, is the largest fall event hosted by the Adrian College Admissions Office. It is designed to give high school juniors and seniors an introduction to the Adrian College experience. The event is held on designated Saturdays throughout the fall semester and consists of a full day of activities for prospective students to enjoy. A wide range of activities include a welcome reception, a student panel, guided tours of campus, a luncheon, a faculty panel, and an athletic reception. It is during this event that prospective students and their families are given the opportunity to gain a wealth of information about Adrian College. In addition, guests are able to interact with Adrian’s faculty, staff, and students in order to fully understand the academic, athletic, and student life aspects of the College. For many students, attending Bulldog 101 will be their first visit to campus, making it a crucial part of the recruiting process. It is at this event that the staff can spark

an interest in prospective students that is strong enough to keep them interested throughout their college application process. At Bulldog 101, faculty, staff, and students bring the true Adrian College experience to life through their personal interactions. Events such as this are what help set Adrian College apart from other private, liberal arts colleges similar to Adrian. The personal attention given to students and the informational sessions are designed to leave prospective students with the feeling that Adrian not only provides students with the benefits that many private, liberal arts colleges offer, but that it is a community that genuinely cares about the needs and success of each one of its members. Faculty, Admissions, Athletic staff, and current students are all active participants in Bulldog 101 and play a key role in the preparation, execution, and success of this event. The first Bulldog 101 event was held on October 13th, the next is scheduled for November 10th.

Adrian College Admissions Website Ranked Top In The Nation

Adrian College’s Office of Admissions website was recognized among the top 100 in the 14th annual My College Options® Enrollment Power Index® (EPI), an analysis of the admissions websites of nearly 3,000 colleges and universities.

“It is an honor to have our admissions website recognized among the leading sites in the nation for the second consecutive year,” said Dr. Frank Hribar, Vice President for Enrollment at Adrian College. “Our admissions and mobile websites were developed to assist prospective students in gaining key admissions information in their search for the right college. As a result, we continue to update our site with the latest tools and information that meet the dynamic needs of students to ensure they have easy access to all that Adrian College offers.”

Adrian College also hosts a mobile site to offer a fully integrated experience. The site offers rapid processing and unique ways for prospective students to learn about the College, connect to current events, interact with Counselors via Facebook and complete an online application. It is among the first college mobile sites to allow this kind of flexible connectivity and the incorporation of Facebook interaction.

MyCollegeOptions.org is the nation’s largest online college planning program. Every summer, its staff of college admissions and Internet experts conduct a research-based analysis that measures how well college and university websites provide information to prospective students.

“Very few institutions are able to keep up with the rapidly increasing demands of prospective students when it comes to online user experience,” said Don Munce, President of NRCCUA. “To be rated in the top 100 Admissions websites is a powerful statement that the institution has a focus on the cutting-edge.”

The study grades on a 100-point scale, including functionality, design and technology components. This year’s study examined 38 criteria in four categories: ability to find desired information, personal contact with admissions staff and students, online interactive tools, and website design and navigation.
