ADJUSTMENTS WILL BE MADE TO THE K – 6 SCHOOL TIMES FOR 2016-2017 Following months of discussion in regards to bussing and our K – 6 building schedules, we have come to the conclusion that we can increase student learning and safety by making the following adjustments. The school day at the Primary Building will be from 8:30 until 3:20. Students may enter the building beginning at 8:15. At the Elementary Building and the Intermediate Building, the student day will be from 8:40 until 3:25. Students may enter these buildings beginning at 8:30. Our busses will make the drop off of students at the Primary Building first, in one wave, and then they will travel to west side of town to make one drop off at the Elementary and Intermediate Buildings. In the afternoon, the busses will make one round to pick up at the Primary Building and will then go to the Elementary and Intermediate Schools to make one pick up there. This routing system will allow for more class time in the morning and in the afternoon, where the entire class will be together for a longer period of time than our current two-round style of pick up allows. A musical that is creepy, spooky, and kooky fun for the whole family, The Addams Family features every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man (whom her parents have never met) from a respectable family. If that weren’t upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before — keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

CELINA HIGH SCHOOL

Celina High School is off to an amazing start for the 2015-2016 school year! Athletically, our ladies’ soccer team was Regional Champs, finishing in the top four in Division II for the first time in school history, whereas our football team made it into the state playoffs for the first time since 1998. Two of our men and two of our lady divers will be competing at the State Dive meet while our swim team enters district competition with hopes of advancing to state competition. Our men’s bowling team finished third at Sectionals and will be moving on to district competition.

The Celina High School music department recently hosted the OMEA Solo and Ensemble contest with nearly 1500 students from over 25 schools being evaluated, all hoping to receive a “Superior” rating for their performances. The talent flowing through the halls of the high school was absolutely astonishing. Early in March the high school band and choir will perform a combined concert in celebration of “Music in Our Schools” month.

Academically, Celina High School is looking to enhance our academic course selections by offering a variety of college and career exploration opportunities. For the 2016-2017 academic year, freshmen will take a brand new foundations course entitled College and Career Readiness to explore various career clusters and gain the skills necessary to make informed decisions about future college and career options. Sophomores and juniors may take a Career Search course in which they assess their skills and interests to match possible future occupations. During their junior year, CHS students may take a Career Exploration course to narrow possible career choices into job shadowing opportunities and meet one on one with community members who work in those career fields. This experience gives them a firsthand look at the real-world requirements of working in each career field.

Earlier this year, Celina’s AP Biology class discovered an online course offered through the James Cancer Center at The Ohio State University. The course, Introduction to the Science of Cancer, not only supplemented what was being taught in the classroom, but also reunited a cancer

researcher with her alma mater. Jennifer (Barger) Fleming, a postdoctoral researcher at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and 2000 graduate of Celina High School, visited CHS in January to discuss the similarities between AP Biology labs and her current work. She also shared stories of her career path from high school through college and on to conducting cancer research. This experience has established a relationship between Celina High School and the James Cancer Center, which in turn extended an invitation for Celina High School’s AP Chemistry and AP Biology students to visit. Approximately 30 students will be visiting the James Cancer Center later this month, many of whom have an interest in pursuing a career in the medical field.

LESSON FROM OUR PARENTS

Just today I was reminded about the safety message I was taught 50 years ago. A child, who was accompanied by her mother, came into our office, and she was offered a piece of candy. She shied away as her mom shared that the giver was not a stranger, and that it was okay. Since the child did not recognize the giver, she remained wary of accepting the gift piece of candy. It is with this same mentality that we share the following message of thanks to our protective families.

Please continue to speak to children about the possible dangers of accepting gifts and/or food from strangers. Thank you for reminding your children to talk to trusted adults when they sense something isn’t right, or if they were to see a stranger in the vicinity, including the school.

Since we have such a great place to live, learn, and grow up in, we can, at times, place our trust in people we do not know. This message is not one to create fear in our students but one to say, “Thank you” for helping to make Celina a great, safe place for us all.

MEASURES THAT MATTER

The Mercer County Public Schools in cooperation with the Mercer County ESC developed a profile report that shares information regarding the quality of the schools in Mercer County. This profile is being distributed to all residents of Mercer County. We will have extra copies available in our school buildings.

This report is planned to share the important, valuable aspects of what our schools offer the Mercer County communities, at a time when the latest School District Report Cards are being published. These School District Report Cards are being released with a 28 page on-line document, which is available to help you to interpret the report card.

During the 2014 – 2015 school year, we worked cooperatively with parents who chose to opt their students out from testing with the PARCC test format. The Ohio Department of Education chose to release the report cards for last school year including the results from the students who did not test. You will see in these results that Celina City Schools, and other schools who allowed for opt-outs from testing, are being affected in their scores. In the 16 tested areas where we had more that 5% of our students opting out, we were penalized a letter grade. Our performance index score was also lowered due to these opt-out percentages.

The Mercer County Profile Flyer is a quick read foldout that highlights the factors that make our schools great. Thank you for taking a few minutes to review this information when it comes in your mailbox.

CELINA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Cricket Dobmeyer, Music Specialist

On December 8 and 10, the Celina 3rd grade took a field trip to Fort Wayne and was able to sit in the first 3 rows of a live ballet performance of The Nutcracker! Students studied the music and story of the ballet, learned about how to behave and how to dress when attending a music performance. The students learned what ballet is in their music classes in the weeks leading up to the trip.

2016 – 2017 SCHOOL CALENDAR

The 2016 Mercer County Fair is slated to end on Thursday, August 18. We will begin school the following week, with our first day on Wednesday, August 24.

One of the things that you will notice for the upcoming school year is the two-hour delay days we have scheduled for our staff to hold Teacher-Based Team (TBT) meetings, Building Leadership Team (BLT) meetings, and grade level meetings to discuss the results of our STAR Reading and Math assessments.

Our school year will come to end with the final day for students on Thursday, May 25, 2017, with graduation on Saturday, May 27, 2017.

NEW IMMUNIZATIONS FOR THE 2016-2017 SCHOOL YEAR

The Meningococcal A, C, W, and Y vaccine, known as Menactra or Menveo, is now an additional requirement for students who will be entering 7th grade. The Meningococcal A, C, W, and Y vaccine is also a requirement for all students entering the 12th grade. Seniors who had previously received this vaccine with their 7th grade Tdap, will be required to have the booster dose prior to entering 12th grade.

CELINA PRIMARY SCHOOL

We need you! Have you ever thought of volunteering at school? Do you have 30 minutes, one time a week that you could spend reading with a child?

Celina Primary School is looking for volunteers to be reading mentors to students in first and second grades in the B.A.R.K. (Building Achievement by Reading with Kids) program. A B.A.R.K. volunteer uses a pre-planned lesson to work with a child for 30 minutes. It’s easy and it’s fun! The times we need help with the most are 10:30 a.m.-11:35 a.m. daily. A mentor can be a family member of a student, a grandparent, a high school or college student, a retired member of our community, or anyone you know who might be interested.

Being a mentor is very easy. The program involves coming one day a week for 30 minutes and following a scripted lesson plan that uses engaging and fun materials with a child. By volunteering, you will be helping a student improve his/her reading skills. Your personal attention can help a child gain the self-confidence he/she needs to become a better reader and also a better student. If you are interested in becoming a B.A.R.K. mentor at Celina Primary School, please contact Laura Brandt at 419-586-8300 ext. 2500 or [email protected].

CELINA ELEMENTARY

Welcome to the midpoint of the school year! I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful our school year has been thus far! I’d like to thank all of our parents for the support and praise you have given. Seeing our students grow is an exciting and rewarding process. It cannot be achieved without your support and help.

The staff at Celina Elementary would like to invite all the residents to come tour our building. If you are interested in seeing all the wonderful things happening here at CES, please stop by or call. We would be happy to walk and talk about all of the things happening that make us proud!

A huge congratulation goes out to 9 students earning a spot in the City Spelling Bee competition! We are so proud of you! Our students were: Ethan Bryant, Caroline Fisher, Nafisa Jumabaeva, Helli Kemmler, Landon Leiss, Lauren Lochtefeld, Logan Perterlin, LaRaya Slife, and Tristan Wyatt.

Just a few reminders:• Spring Break will be observed March 24th (Thursday) through March 29th (Tuesday). This is a change from the past, as a scheduled teacher in-service day has been planned for Tuesday, March 29th. There will be no school for students on that day.

• We encourage all parents be part of the Parent-Teacher Organization (CCSCO). We hold meetings on the first Monday of each month at Celina Intermediate School at 7:00 p.m.

• The Ohio AIR Assessment will take place in April. Students at CES will take an assessment in both Reading and Math. Students in the 4th grade will also take the Social Studies Assessment. The dates are as follows:

Reading: April 5th and 6thMathematics: April 12th and 13thSocial Studies: April 19th and 20th (4th grade only)

ADJUSTMENTS WILL BE MADE TO THE K – 6 SCHOOL TIMES FOR 2016-2017

Following months of discussion in regards to bussing and our K – 6 building schedules, we have come to the conclusion that we can increase student learning and safety by making the following adjustments.

Our Middle School and High School times are unchanged.

The cooperation and brainstorming on the part of transportation staff, building staff, supervisors, and building administrators was a huge part of the successful planning effort for this endeavor to make a better situation for our students!

Spring Musical 2016

The Addams FamilyApril 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24Mark your calendars!Tickets on sale March 15th.Call 419-586-1494

SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE

In January 2007, the Celina City School District last printed a newsletter, entitled Open Line, for its residents and businesses. We felt that the time was right for us to once again share written district news with you. We have found that not everyone is connected to the Internet, listens to WCSM or WKKI, or receives a copy of The Daily Standard, so we are reaching out to you with this information. We hope that you find this information to be both informative and meaningful. We will make the newsletter available on the schools website at celinaschools.org.

Since the beginning of the school year, our family has purchased a home in Celina and we have moved into the district. This has been very nice in terms of getting to know more people in the district and having the opportunity to be more involved in community activities. The support of the community for our athletic teams is outstanding! We have been able to enjoy the Performing Arts skills of our students in their musical and stage presence. Thank you for supporting our students and our staff. Go Bulldogs!!!

Our next publication is planned for the end of the school year.
