A bit of a mixed month with good bits and bad bits – fairly normal then. I mentioned last month that I was due to navigate on the

Hughes Rally – well I ended up as Steward – and here’s why. As I told you last month I was appointed MSA observer on the Huntsman Endurance Rally (which was a great event but not without its problems) the day/night beforehand, so Andy Kilby elected to go through scrutineering on the Saturday evening and (no not what you’re thinking!) it passed with no problems. On the way home he filled up with petrol in readiness for the event, went home and parked up. Now Andy’s road is decidedly hilly and when he went out to the car later in the evening petrol was trickling at a fair rate from the nearside of the petrol tank (which was new last autumn) and this leak was nowhere near any of the pipework – so I got home at about half past mid-night to be told that I could have a lay in the following morning, but if I fancied it they were looking for a Club Steward. I’ve always enjoyed volunteering! It was a very good day on a well run event.

It was with great sadness that I heard of the pass-ing of Peter Piper – a true gentleman in every sense of that word – the world is a poorer place without him and I leave further tribute to those who were privileged to know him better than I did. My condolences to his family and friends.

Better news is that our first Autosolo is in place for 27th July at North Weald. For those who aren’t aware these events are run as Autotests but are rather more challenging with bigger tests and will appeal to those who enjoy sprinting as well as you Autotesters (and everyone else, of course). Andy Elcomb is Clerking so you’ll enjoy the tests – they’re not really a sprint but more that way than most Autotests. Regs and entry form are on our website and in the Acorn etc. We will, or course, need plenty of marshals too.

Now for the whinge those who watch Fast Talk have been expecting – our Social Nights. The May social was a Noggin & Natter (maybe you youngsters just don’t know what that is – basically it’s just a free social night with a pint (or less!) and lots of chat about motorsport etc. not football I hope. Well who turned up? Me and Colin Shipway, oh! and Jim Giddings after a while. Shame, I thought, maybe if there’s not a particular function you’re all too busy, it’ll be better in June as we have a mid-season competitors forum which should attract lots of you to keep the club up to date on what’s good and bad about what we’re provid-ing for you. Was it? Was it b-----------y! Who turned up? No prizes – it was me and Colin Shipway again with a few of the Kemsing mafia there just for a drink.

If you lot don’t support the social side of our club then I fear for its future. You may think that the club exists just to run events but to make it work there’s much more to it than that. The communications be-tween members is what makes a club and the social evenings are an important part of that (if you don’t turn up how can I persuade you to give up your free time towards the running of our events!). Please support your local sheriff club.

I hope to see more of you at the skittles evening that Dawn Travers has arranged – must get my book-

ing off to her as soon as I send in this copy! It was good to know that several of you were at the

National Sprint Championship round run by our friends B19MC at Lydden. Matt Oliver did exceptionally well by breaking the lap record twice in the two top 12 runs – well done Matt, I hope Bill’s broken leg is on the mend.

It’s very pleasing to see a good turnout for the eve-ning Autotests again this year with a very encouraging number of under 21’s. There is a future for when us old fogies get past it!

That’s about it for this month – see you all soon I hope. Chin

Editorial Ramblings

O kay, okay no prizes for the “Spot the deliberate mistake” in last month’s Acorn...no Skittles form. It is available to download off the regs

page on the main club website at (just in case you did-n’t know!) www.sevenoaksmotorclub.com. Please send the completed for in with your cheque for £12 per head for this event. After reading Chin’s (justified) rant re socials , please don’t let me down people. I have to say on a personal note it won’t be easy for us as a family to make that evening but some or all of Team Travers will put in an appearance. So come on if I can make the effort you can.

Ralph was trying his hardest again to finally put the Nissan’s rear suspension to rest on the Autotest the other week. He is finding the dry dusty conditions not to the car’s liking...probably due to the cheap budget tyres he had put on a couple of years ago. So I said he can go and buy some better ones more suited to the conditions if he likes, but he decided the Mazda needed tyres more urgently! He reckons it will rain eventually and a damp field is all he needs to gain a few more places....hmmm! Monthly Mug

T here was only one clear winner for the May mug and that was Dan Whittington for the “Best per-

formance in a car that was inappropriate for the event” category. Dan had a 2nd in class in the VW Bora at our car trial on 4th May, against much nimbler vehi-cles. Well done, mate.

New Members

A warm welcome to Daniel Bryce; Timothy Bate-man and children Lucie, Declan and James;

Cathy and David Simpson; Cliff and Kare Ratcliffe and son Adam. I hope you have been enjoying the autotests so far. Do come and try the social side too when you can.

Finally, Chin is thinking (oh no!!) about resurrecting Rally School. With a lot of newcomers this year and maybe one or two rusty not so new, it seemed like the right time. So watch this space for developments.

I’m off to France very soon—school residential trip – so aurevoir mes amis!

Summer Autotest Series 2008 Round 2 – May 22

T hursday May 22nd was the second of this years’ evening autotests. This week we had 30 com-petitors and once again it was great to see a

few new faces who came along to play. Also, I didn’t have to panic on the marshal front again and as always, I’d like to thank them very much for coming because without them we’d have problems running the event. Class A this week was very small with 6 competitors. CHRIS JUDGE came first in his Mini with STEVE HATTON second. FTD was taken by DAREN HALL in his Nova. Class B was huge! There were 19 competitors in this class and as last time, the class was won by Chelms-ford’s MIKE THOMAS in his 205 with CHRIS PEN-FOLD in second and MATT ENDEAN in third. Also with two out of two, was Maidstone’s ROBERT SHARPE who won the four person Class D in his MX5. STEVE THOMPSON won class E in the Eunos. All in all I think everyone had another good evening even though, it was quite dark by the end of the tests! Well that’s two down five to go. Round 3 – June 5

T he third round of the Evening Autotest series brought lovely weather, despite the forecasts and saw another high turnout with 29 competi-

tors coming out to play. We also had a couple of new marshals, which was

nice. So we didn’t have to worry about having enough to cover the tests. Many thanks to our marshals for strutting their stuff with the stopwatches once more.

This event has a larger Class A with 12 competi-tors. Brighton’s JON JOHNSTONE came first in his Mini with JAY GROSSMITH second in the Metro and Chelmsford’s IAN MEPHAM in third.

FTD was a repeat of the last event, by DAREN HALL in his Nova.

Class B had 13 competitors and for the third time in a row, Chelmsford’s MIKE THOMAS won the class in his 205 with CHRIS PENFOLD in second and Maid-stone’s BRIAN SHARPE in third.

Also with his third win in a row was Maidstone’s ROBERT SHARPE who won Class D in his MX5.

DARREN TYRE, having done some much appreci-ated marshalling on the first two evenings competed this week and won class E in his Eunos.

I think everyone had another good evening and with the help of the Club laptop, I think we even man-aged to finish a little earlier. Technology does make life easier (when it works) – and it does help a lot hav-ing Chin around! – Many thanks to him.

Well that’s three down four to go (it’s going so quick).

Results for both rounds are on the next pages and of course the club website. Stacey Thompson

Peter Piper

I t is with great sadness that I report of the passing of Peter Piper. Peter had been a continuous member since

1997, competing for a while in a Porsche replica which I think belonged to his son.

Because of his connections, Peter was instrumental in getting the ex-Elford Por-sche 917 for our Golden Jubilee and he had helped us down at the Brighton Vet-eran Run and at the Crystal Palace sprint.

Viv remembers him from there very well as being a lovely gentleman and they worked together laying out the pins and ropes for the paddock. I won't forget him sharing his sausage sandwiches with one of our dogs, in the pouring rain, down at Brighton.

He also supported the annual awards and helped at Crystal Palace.

Neil (Brooks-Johnson) said he often saw him out and about in Hadlow and he was always impeccably dressed and al-ways had a kind and cheery word for all and sundry.

Peter’s daughter, Mary, gave an ac-count of his life at the funeral and it was most interesting finding out about his other interests over the years, aside from cars and motorsport.

However the overriding sentiment was that he was a thoroughly well liked and respected chap and will be missed by all his many friends and acquaintances.

Apparently he was quite fit and well (going to the shops and allotment, driving etc) prior to suffering an embolism from which he died.

The family asked that charitable dona-tions be made instead of flowers to be sent either to the Royal Masonic Girls & Boys Trust (which educated Peter as the son of a Freemason) or to Bexley Cross-roads Care Ltd of which his daughter Mary Piper is a trustee. They care for car-ers.

Our thoughts go out to June and Mary.

Steve Stringer takes FTD at “Newcomer's AutoSOLO Challenge” Final

18. We hope to run three tests with three attempts at each test, time and weather dependent. The

better two runs of three attempts at each course will count for results. If time presses on, then only one run from two attempts at the last course will count. In the event of a tie, the fastest run on the first course will determine the tie, then the second fastest run on the first course, then the fastest run on the second course etc until the tie is resolved. To be classed as a finisher, a competitor must start at least two runs at all courses bar one: i.e. if there are four courses, a finisher must attempt at least two runs of each of the first three courses.

19. Competitors may start in their own time within ten seconds of the start marshal issuing a verbal

start instruction. Starting will be in accordance with class and number order. Cars will start singly. Timing will be by hand held stop watches to the previous tenth of a second. Timing will start as the front wheels cross the timing start line, and stop when the front wheels cross the finish line (note it will be a flying finish). Competitors must stop on the stop line after the flying finish, before continuing to the paddock. Competitors who fail to stop on the stop line may be excluded from the event.

20. The STOP signal may be displayed because of an obstruction on the course, whether this be

an object or a person. A competitor must stop immediately on deployment of the STOP signal, and a re-run will be allowed. The STOP signal will be demonstrated at the driver's briefing.

21. The organisers may ask competitors to help out with marshalling the tests if required. 22. All officials, and competitors whilst acting as marshals, will be Judges of Fact for the purposes

stated in the 2008 MSA Yearbook Section (D) 57.

23. Refreshments can be obtained from the caterer in the paddock. Please support them and take your litter home with you.

24. This is a non-spectator event and car passes for competitors will be sent with the final

instructions. Additional passes, within reason, may be requested by competitors from the Secretary but are not guaranteed. Entry to the Airfield can only be obtained by displaying a pass on the windscreen of your vehicle.

25. Entry to the Airfield will be marked by orange arrows at the roadside BEFORE you reach the

control tower entrance. If manned, you must stop and wait at the entrance to the Airfield until instructed to proceed

We hope you enjoy the event

MSA Club Child Protection Officers Since the launch of the MSA’s Child Protection Policy in 2007, the MSA’s activity has been concentrated on encouraging Clubs to determine whether they need appoint a Child Protection Officer (CPO) and to process initial nominations. In order to keep these important volunteers more fully informed, the first in a periodic series of MSA e-bulletins has been circulated to CPOs. Any Club CPOs who have not received their copy, please advise Allan Dean-Lewis at [email protected] A copy can also be accessed from the Members section of the MSA website by inputting individual i.d. numbers and a password. The bulletin is not intended for general circulation. MSA Council seeks nominees for Specialist Committees The MSA is seeking nominations from individuals wishing to be on one of the Specialist Committees that represent the interests of the various disciplines of motor sport. The Specialist Committees, covering Autotest, Cross Country, Historics, Karting, Race, Rallies, Speed Events and Trials, meet two or three times a year, normally at Motor Sports House. The topics of the day are discussed and new regulations and other issues are debated. The decisions and minutes are communicated via the Committee Chairmen at the next MSA Council meeting for approval. No formal qualifications are required but you must be a member of an MSA-recognised motor club or Regional Association who must support your nomination. The role is voluntary, although expenses will be paid to cover travel to Motor Sports House. The appointment is for a three-year term, with each person serving no more than three consecutive terms, apart from in exceptional circumstances. Colin Hilton, MSA Chief Executive, says: "New recruits always bring a sense of renewed purpose and a fresh perspective – which is so important in this role. I encourage anyone with a passion for this sport to get involved and help to develop and shape it for the future." There is no application form to complete. Just write down a brief outline of your motor sport involvement and interests together with your name, address and contact details. This should be sent by your MSA-registered club or Regional Association to Andrea Wren at Motor Sports House, Riverside Park, Colnbrook, SL3 0HG to arrive before the end of June 2008. Beware the Norwich Pharmacal order Hosts of internet forums, bulletin boards and the like should be aware of the potential pitfalls if they allow their websites to be used as platforms for defamatory material. Recently, a High Court case was brought by a Championship football club against the owner and operator of a website. The club argued that some of the site’s users had posted false and defamatory messages against the club and its directors. The club could not bring proceedings against those posting the messages, as their real identity was not known, only their screen name, so the only way to find out the identities of the message posters was from the website operator. The court granted a ‘Norwich Pharmacal’ order in five of the 14 postings considered. This required the website operator to assist the victim by disclosing the identity of the wrongdoer. The judge held that the club’s entitlement to take action to protect its reputation outweighed the rights of the message posters to maintain their anonymity and to express themselves freely.

Let the officials sleep Contact information for club officials was mentioned in e-Wheels 10 May 2008 (past issues can be downloaded from the MSA website at: http://www.msauk.org/site/cms/contentViewArticle.asp?article=2197&category=658). Another suggestion is to include a cut-off time for telephone calls such as: No phone calls to Committee Members or Event Officials after 9pm please. Force majeure? The day before a PCT, the field is flooded. On the morning of a rally, the main road to stage one is closed. Two hours before an autotest is due to run, the Clerk of the Course is still stuck at the airport due to a strike by baggage handlers. With the smooth running of motor sport events dependant on so many factors these days, club officials would be well advised to pose a few What if? questions and plan for the answers. Competitors and volunteers are likely to be sympathetic to changed arrangements which have been thought through and are reasonable under the circumstances. MSA Championships The MSA British and other championships are now well underway and the latest positions, qualifying events and links to championship websites are on www.msauk.org ENDS.
