BY YARA HADI
“I don’t want the public to see the
world they live in while they’re in the
park. I want to feel they’re in another
world,” said Walt Disney on the con-
cept of Disneyland. On Saturday, the
Language Academy took the students
to Disneyland, the happiest place on
earth. We rode various rides and saw
some Disney characters. Keep reading
to find out how my day was spent at
Disneyland.
When we first got to Disneyland
at 10:40, we rode a tram to take us to
the theme park. After we got there,
all the students took a picture in front
of Mickey Mouse, which was made from
flowers.
All the students then spent the day with
their friends. My friends and I rode some
interesting rides. The first ride we went to
was Space Mountain, which was so much
fun because the ride is fast and you can’t
see anything except stars. Then we rode
Autopia, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The
Haunted Mansion.
One of my favorite rides that we went See Disneyland on p.3

DISNEYLAND Continued from p. 1
on was It’s a Small World.
This ride was amazing be-
cause you can see all the
different countries from all
around the world and cul-
tures in one ride. It was ex-
traordinary.
My second favorite ride
was Splash Mountain. This
ride was very fun and a little
scary. We got a little wet,
but it was worth it. As much
as I loved the rides, I also
loved meeting some Disney
characters and fireworks.
What is going to Disney-
land without meeting some
characters? While roaming
through Disney, my friends
and I met a couple of amaz-
ing characters. First, we met
Mary Poppins, then
we met Princess
Ariel from The Lit-
tle Mermaid, Prin-
cess Tiana from The
Princess And The
Frog, and we met
Princess Jasmine
from Aladdin. It was
really great to meet
some original Dis-
ney characters.
As the sky got
darker, everyone
was waiting for the
fireworks. The fireworks
were very loud and spec-
tacular. What I loved about
the fireworks was that they
were behind the castle which
made the castle stand out.
I’ve never seen fireworks
that remarkable in my life.
After spending 12 hours
at Disneyland, it was time to
leave. I had a wonderful
time at Disneyland. I want
to thank Language Acad-
emy for taking us to this
marvelous trip that I will
never forget. I also wanted
to thank the staff that came
along.
Spring Break (March 12—16, 2012) If you plan on traveling abroad during Spring Break, please don’t forget to get Gilbert Cho’s signature on page 3 of your I-20. The Language Academy office will be closed from Wed (March 14th) - Friday (March 16th). Enjoy the week-long vacation!

The Spring Break is
around the corner. If you
are still looking for an ideal
place for Spring Break, San
Francisco Bay area will be
a good choice.
San Francisco is located
in northern California,
which is around 380 miles
away from Los Angeles. It
is only an hour’s flight or
six hours drive to get there.
The distance is ideal for a
week Spring Break. In ad-
dition, the maritime influ-
ence makes the city cool. If
you are tired of the hot
weather in LA, San Fran-
cisco will be a cool city for
your Spring Break.
Here are some useful
tips to survive in San Fran-
cisco.
A Different Downtown
San Francisco downtown is
much smaller that the
downtown of Los Angeles.
However, most spots and
scenes are near downtown.
You don’t have to drive in
SF, because the public
transportation and taxis are
convenient. You can take
Bart (a public transporta-
tion in SF) to the San Fran-
cisco Bay area; or take a
bus or Municipal Railway
(Muni) , which is only sev-
eral dollars, to travel in the
city. Even if you take the
taxi, it is cheaper than rent-
ing a car.
Parking and Hotels
Parking and hotels are ex-
pensive in San Francisco.
As downtown San Fran-
cisco is small and people
can’t build a lot of parking
lots and hotels, parking and
hotels are very expensive
in the city. It takes more
than $4/hour to park in the
city. The average for a ho-
tel is more than $100
downtown See San Francisco on p. 6

LAS VEGAS VACATION
Since everybody knows Spring
Break is coming soon, on March 12, all
the students at USC and other schools
will have one week off to relax and be
away from the stress, routine and more.
I would like to give you some advice:
If you want to go away from the city ,
you can go to the magic world of Las
Vegas. This place is only four hours
away by car, and 90 minutes away by
airplane.
The sign “Welcome to the Fabulous
Las Vegas” has been one of the most
photographed places in the world since
1959. The iconic structure is located in
the middle of Las Vegas Boulevard
South. There is a similar sign on the
opposite end of the Strip as well.
In Las Vegas, there are a lot of places
for shopping, entertainment, dining,
dancing, and more than 150,000 hotel
rooms there. Here are the names of some
of most famous hotels:
Stratosphere is the tallest hotel there
and has about three rides on the
very top of the building.
Mandalay Bay has its own aquarium
and is the only hotel that has a wave
pool and a lazy river.
Caesar’s Palace is the oldest hotel
and is known for its architecture and
history.
Hundreds of beautiful restaurants
are available to enjoy the nights and
of course if you like to gamble, this
is the perfect place.
San Francisco, Ideal Place for Spring Break
The San Francisco skyline can be seen from Twin Peaks.
The ride Insanity on top of the Stratosphere
The Las Vegas sign is a popular landmark.

YVOON WEI
Yvoon asked for feedback
to improve the newsletter.
Here is her interview with
Yili and Jiahua.
Yvoon. Graduate or under-
graduate? What year
are you in now?
Yili: I am a graduate stu-
dent.
Jiahua: Me too.
Y: Do you have an inter-
est in our newsletter?
Yili: Yes, I do.
Jiahua: Yes, I have a lot
of interests in the newslet-
ter.
Y: What do you think of
the front page?
Yili: It is good. I am al-
ways attracted by the front
page.
Jiahua: Good. This is
what I like most.
Y: What do you think of
our setting? Is it too
much?
Yili: I think it is ok.
Jiahua: I think so, too.
Y: How about the pic-
tures?
Yili: Actually, I do not like
the picture because they
are black and white. I pre-
fer colorful ones.
Jiahua: I think the pic-
tures are good. I usually
can find some students I
know in the pictures.
Y: Which section do you
like best?
Yili: I like the section of
activities at Language
Academy. I‘d love to go to
the activities, but I am
really busy with my stud-
ies. So the report of activi-
ties can provide some in-
formation about the activi-
ties I am interested in.
Jiahua: I think the pic-
tures are good.
Y: Which kind of story do
you like to read?
Yili: I like stories about
movies, which can relax
me after a long study ses-
sion. I am a big fan of
movies. Maybe you can
put some information
about the movies that will
be displayed in the School
of Cinematic Arts.
Jiahua: I like stories
about sports. My favorite
sport is swimming. I’d
like to know the informa-
tion about incoming
games.
Y: Do you want to send
your stories to us?
Yili: If I have time, I will
send my stories to you.
Jiahua: I am not confi-
dent with my writing
skills. I don’t think what I
write will be published on
the newsletter.
Y: How much time do
you use to read the news-
letter commonly?
Yili: 15 minutes.
Jiahua: Less than 15 min-
utes.
We value your feedback.
Please let us know if you
have a story idea or some-
thing you want to see in
The Academy News.

Michael Phelps—The Gold Medal Machine
He is the athlete that every country dreams of having. He is a total gold medal machine and he is America’s pride—Michael Phelps.
Michael Phelps has won 14 Olympic gold medals for America in last two summer Olympic Games in Athens and Beijing. Michael Phelps is a 27-year-old superman in the water. His body is designed to be an athlete, but what gives him such a super body?
First of all, super lungs. I think most of us have tested our vital capacity (the maximum amount of air a person can exhale from the
lungs after a maxi-mum in-hale) be-fore.
Phelps got 15000 ml in the vital capacity test, which means his vital capacity is 3~4 times larger than ordinary people.
Second, a super low fat con-tent. His fat content is less than 4%. As we know, the lowest fat content record is 3% by the king of basketball---Michael Jordan.
Last but not least, super efforts and scientific diet. Phelps trains more than 30 hours every week, burning more than 12,000 calo-ries every day.
In his daily diet, he has meals like this: three fried egg sand-wiches, two cups of coffee, five waffles, and three pieces of French toast are for his breakfast; one pound of pasta, two cheese hamburgers and energy drinks for lunch; in dinner, one pound of
pasta, one whole pizza and en-ergy drinks. Even though Phelps has an unbelievably talented body, the effort is his key to success. Be-hind his glory, we never imagine how many laps in the pool he has swum. His success tells us: “insist on that victory” !

Entertainment The 84rd Academy Awards
PHOEBE ZHANG The 84rd Academy Awards was

ter on February 26, 2012. The Acad-
emy Awards honored the best movies
of 2011 and presented awards in 24
standard competitive categories.
Movie stars were shining on the red
carpet as fans crowded outside. Billy
Crystal served as host for the annual
ceremony, which was the ninth time
for him as a host.
The opening show continued the
style of these years. Billy used a com-
posite of several movie segments. In
this show, he not only kissed George
Clooney, but also jumped off from
Burj Khalifa and experienced Mission
Impossible.
“Hugo” and “The Artist” were the
biggest winners. “Hugo” won Best
Visual Effects, Best Sound Mixing,
Best Sound Editing, Best Art Direction
and Best Cinematography. “The Art-
ist” won Best Picture, Best Director,

What a good day for winning awards!
On Sunday, the former Kodak Thea-
tre in Hollywood and Highland shop-
ping mall were full of the most famous
celebrities in the American film indus-
tries. Actors, actresses, and directors
were all gathering to find out who was
going to win the most important award
in movie maker history.
This year is the year of “The Artist.”
“The Artist” was nominated for ten
awards, and won five awards. Jean Du-
jardin won the Oscar for the best actor
in a leading role.
The Artist is a story about two actors
in the late of 1920s in Hollywood,
struggling to find their careers, their
relationship amid all of the difficulties
in life. What makes this movie special
is that it is a silent film, which depends
only on the music, and the character’s
body language.
On the other hand, Meryl Streep
won the best actress in her movie The
Iron Lady, which she played the role of
the first female prime minister in Brit-
ain Margaret Thatcher.
This year is the 84th year of the
Oscar awards. I think we will never get
bored of the excitement of these
awards. The red carpet interviews, the
entertaining opening performances, and
for sure, we cannot wait to see the new
creative movies.
San Francisco Continued from p. 4
(depending on the level of
hotels).
Don’t forget to bring
an umbrella and a coat
with you. The special
weather makes the city
always rain and cold in the
morning and night. It is
always a wise ideal to
bring an umbrella and a
coat when you travel.
Wear a pair of com-
fortable shoes. San Fran-
cisco has many slope
streets in the city, which
makes walking difficult
than on the ground. Avoid
wearing high heels and
take flat or sports shoes
Meryl Streep won Best Actress for her portrayal
of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in
“The Iron Lady.”
“The Artist” is a silent film produced in black
and white., like the movies of the 1920s.
