A Note from Kathy Dube, Administrator Since we still do not have clear direction on how to
make the roof on our new building comply with all fire
regulations, it is “Business as Usual” at The Maples. Summer is in full swing and we are all
enjoying the beautiful weather we have had lately. More outside activities are planned for
our residents, and our summer carnival is in the works. With the uncertainty of when we
will be moving, it was decided not to hold the Blueberry Festival this year. However, we
continue to work on improving the care we provide through continuing education and staff
development. Our residents are our treasures and they deserve the best care we can
possibly give. ~Kathy

Resident Reflections-Loyal Frederick
Loyal Frederick was born in Williams
County, Ohio, where he grew up with his
brother, John, and his three sisters,
Mary, Sarah, and Violet. Football was a
favorite sport early on and he played
center for his high school football team.
He spent many summers at his aunt’s
house and it was there he met his future
wife, Joan, who lived across the street.
Loyal and Joan were married in 1955
right after he got home from serving in
the Army in Korea. They raised five
children: Rick, Richard, Butch, Tim, and Carol. The boys all played football and
Carol was a cheerleader so there were always games to go to. Two of the boys also
played baseball. The family moved around a lot and over the years he has lived in
Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and Washington. He likes Michigan the best but
Washington was very good, too. They always had a farm with a big garden, dogs
and cats, and horses for riding. Loyal has had a number of jobs over the years
including a truck driver, electrician, farrier (shoes horses), and machinist.
Loyal’s favorite color is blue and his favorite animal is his dog, Susie. His favorite
foods are pretty much anything and his hobbies included hunting, especially with
muzzle loaders. One of his best memories was when they went rodeoing with their
kids and grandkids. The girls competed in barrel racing and the boys competed in
bull riding.
There are many things Loyal likes about The Maples but his favorite is the music.
It always gets his toes a-tappin’ and he likes to sing along.

Blaine Church Dinner
The residents recently attended the annual supper held at
the Blaine Christian Church. This is a special evening for
many of the residents from The Maples and Paul Oliver
Memorial Hospital. They were all treated to a wonderful
dinner and musical entertainment. We appreciate all the
time and effort that the members of the Blaine Christian
Church put forth to host this wonderful event for our
residents. Thank you to our Activities staff and volunteers
for assisting with making the evening a success.

A Place To Call Home
The following is an article written by Gloria Sproul. She wanted to
share her experience as she recently moved to The Maples from her
own home.
Many people in Frankfort and surrounding areas have probably heard
of The Maples in Frankfort. As a home for the elderly, it ranks as
possibly one of the top retirement residences in the county.
How do I know? As a new resident at The Maples, I can honestly
speak of its positive virtues. Of course I was skeptical when my
children first suggested that I go there. They kept saying that they wanted a safe and
secure place for me to live and to be surrounded by others who also had problems with
dementia. Even though I knew who I was, and where I had been, my mind kept playing tricks
on me. I might repeat the same question over several times, forgetting that I had just
spoken a few times before. Not fun———.
So I went willingly, as my family all lived in different parts of the country and my dearest
friend had just passed away.
At first, I was scared and skeptical of what life might be like at The Maples. Now a few
weeks later, I am happy and honored to be a resident at this wonderful place which I now
call home.
The staff is outstanding, kind, understanding, and cooperative. They are always available
and make you feel wanted and loved. Besides that, the food is fantastic and the outings full
of fun and adventure.
Not to be overlooked is the talent of many of the residents. One lady in particular comes
to mind. Her name is Vivian and she has a God-given talent for painting pictures of various
nature scenes which are truly outstanding. Vivian is a quiet woman who never talks about
her gift but who opened up to me one afternoon when I went to her room. Since I have no
talent in that area I was truly amazed at some of the spectacular scenes she had painted.
There are may residents here and most are quiet about their talents. There are artists,
musicians, teachers, store owners, dentists, ministers, and many others who are quietly
spending their last days in the comfort of new friendships.
Frankfort is fortunate to have such an outstanding facility. So, if you need a place to spend
your final days——or have a relative who might need a place to spend the last days of their
life, suggest The Maples in Frankfort, the wonderful home of my birth.

Thompsonville Air Show
The Maples Mission Statement
To provide accessible, high-quality long-term care; to meet the
evolving health care needs of the residents of Benzie County.
The residents had a great time at the 8th Annual
Benzie Area Radio Control Club (BARC) “Spring Thing”
model airplane show in Thompsonville. The show
featured both fixed wing and helicopters, at one of the
biggest and best RC flying fields in northern Michigan.
There were pilots from across northern Michigan flying
off the airport’s huge 2,900 foot blacktop runway.
Pilots flew a wide variety of aircraft, including several
fighter planes and other
planes powered by real
jet engines, such as the
F100 Super Sabre.
Many World War II
warbirds, such as the
famous P51 Mustang and
the Navy’s Corsair were
also in the air.

Let’s Go Fishing!
It was a cloudy morning as residents, staff, and volunteers
headed to the Frankfort landing to try to catch a few fish.
Danny caught the first fish but the gigantic catch wriggled
off the hook. Everyone had a few
nibbles but it was Jody who caught
the next fish.
The residents had a great time and
they are all going to help us remember
to bring a fishing net next time. Many
thanks to the staff and volunteers
who gave up part of their Saturday to
help with the adventure.
Father’s Day Breakfast
The Maples had a special breakfast on June 19 in honor of
Father’s Day. The Activities staff cooked up French toast
with strawberries and whipped topping while our Dietary
staff provided sausage and scrambled eggs. The breakfast
was delicious and our residents enjoyed time to remember
some pretty special dads and to share memories of their own
family. Thanks to all who worked together to start their day
in such a great way.
