The construction of Belém Tower(1514-1520) had as its main goal the protection of Lisbon against invaders. As the means for defence and attack had evolved since them, its defensive function was lost.

2. Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos) - Lisbon

•The construction of the Jerónimos Monastery began in 1502 by order of King D. Manuel I and was concluded at a century later. •The Jerónimos Monastery is an impressive building. One of the most exquisite projects was the Church of Santa Maria de Belém, with a high ceiling, where the tombs of Camões and Vasco da Gama are located.

3. Pena National Palace (Palácio da Pena) - Sintra

A masterpiece of romanticism in Portugal, it is the best known monument in the beautiful city of Sintra, next to Lisbon. At the top of a mountain, the palace has a unique architecture, which mixes strong colors and Manueline elements and Arab influence.

5. Alcobaça Monastery (Mosteiro de Alcobaça) - Alcobaça

Main monument of the city of Alcobaça, the monastery dates from the 12th

century, being considered the first Gothic construction in the country. Of great

dimensions, it was the last foundation of São Bernardo. Inside the monastery

are the tombs of D. Pedro I and D. Inês de Castro, who lived a tragic and

famous love story.

6. Batalha Monastery (Mosteiro da Batalha) - Batalha

Batalha Monastery is one of the most beautifull Portuguese and European

architecture masterpieces. After his victory in Aljubarrota (1385) over the

Kingdom of Castile (a region from the present Spain), King D. João I

commissioned the construction of this monastery to thank Virgin Mary for this

triumph. Its construction began in 1386 and was completed in 1517.
