The master classes will be split into three sections by ability level and are an opportunity for children to try their pieces out and get feedback from a professional pianist in a supportive and inspirational environment. The lead tutor for the masterclasses and adjudicator for the competition will be Leon McCawley. Depending on the distribution of the participants between classes, he will be assisted at various stages by a second concert pianist, who will be announced once the entries are finalised. LEON McCAWLEY Leon McCawley, one of Britain’s foremost pianists, has forged a highly successful career since winning 1st Prize in the 1993 International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna and 2nd Prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition, building on his earlier success as Winner of the Piano Section of BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1990. Since then he has recorded extensively. A review of his 2015 CD of Rachmaninov’s Complete Preludes describes him as “...a real poet of the keyboard in these performances that are alive to Rachmaninov’s wonderful melodic invention’ (The Classical Reviewer March 2015). In April 2011 he performed the complete Mozart Piano Sonatas over one weekend at King’s Place, London. He has given solo and chamber recitals at the Wigmore Hall and Southbank Centre and internationally at major concert halls in Berlin, Prague, Hong Kong, new York and Washington DC. He can be frequently heard on BBC Radio 3. As a concerto soloist, Leon McCawley performs with many of the leading British and International orchestras including the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, St. Petersburg Symphony and Vienna Symphony. He has worked with conductors such as Mark Elder, Kurt Masur, Simon Rattle and John Wilson. He studied at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester with Heather Slade-Lipkin before continuing his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia with Eleanor Sokoloff. He also received invaluable guidance from Mieczyslaw Horszowski, Nina Milkina and Murray Perahia. Leon McCawley is currently professor of piano at London’s Royal College of Music. LEON McCAWLEY

TERMS & CONDITIONS:

• Candidates must be under 19 years of age and in full time school education in the UK on 18th March 2017.

• Concert standard dress or school uniform is required for both rounds of the competition.

• The top three in each competitive class will agree to make themselves available for the evening final at 7pm in Loretto School Chapel.

• The master classes will be morning sessions and are informal and fun sessions in the following classes -

Prep Test/Grade 1 : Grade 2/3 : Grade 4/5. More competent grade 5 pianists may prefer the Foundation class competitive category.

• For competitive classes, two named photocopies of each piece to be performed must be submitted on the day.

• The expenses for the trip to Steinway Hall in London will cover the winner of the Advanced and Intermediate categories, and one parent/guardian.

• The winners will be required to perform at Steinway Hall on Thursday 27th April 2017 as part of a recital to include

professional artists, which will be tailored accordingly.

• The judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must be under 19 years of age and in full time school education in the UK on 18th March 2017.

The first round for each class will be held simultaneously, in two locations during the day at Loretto School. Each candidate will compete on a Steinway model B grand piano.

The best three pianists from the Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced classes will perform in the Piano Competition Finals Concert at 7pm that evening in Loretto School Chapel.

PRIZES:

The finals prizes are as follows:

Foundation: £175 plus the Piano Competition Foundation trophy.

Intermediate: £300 plus the James Waterhouse trophy and an all expenses paid trip to perform at Steinway Hall in London.

Advanced: £450, the James Waterhouse Piano Competition Trophy and an all expenses paid trip to perform at Steinway Hall in London.
