Welcome to the fourth and last of ourfull Progress Reports, which brings usto within four months of the conven-tion and, I hope, captures the sense ofexcitement which is now buildingwithin the team. I also feel a sense of along journey approaching its conclu-sion, from the earliest idea for a bid,not long after Intersection, through thevote at ConJosé and some two and ahalf years (so far!) of preparation. Asusual, we’d particularly like to thankJim Burns for capturing this feelingwith another fine piece of cover art, asthis journey up the Clyde and throughtime brings us at last towards theSECC and August 2005.

Our latest news – confirmed justas this PR was going to print – is thatAlan Lee will be attending the conven-tion as a Special Guest. Alan is bestknown for his Tolkien imagery, includ-ing his contribution to Peter Jackson’smovie trilogy, although he has alsotackled many other subjects frommyth, legend, and fantasy. We willinclude a longer article on Alan in ourfinal pre-con Newsletter which will bemailed out in July. We also hope toannounce more Special Guests in thecoming weeks – keep watching ourweb site for announcements.

Enclosed with this PR you willfind the final Hugo ballot, giving youthe opportunity to vote for the best SFof 2004. As before, you can vote bypost, using the paper ballot form, or

online via our web site. To vote onlineyou will again need your membershipnumber and your Hugo PIN (personalidentification number), both of whichcan be found on the address label ofthis Progress Report.

Our staffing has undergone somefurther changes since PR3, and nowhas its final shape, although manyareas are still seeking volunteers forspecific vacancies. Pat McMurray hashad to step down from the role ofExhibits Division Head for personalreasons, and we thank him for theexcellent work he has done in buildingthe team there. In his place we wel-come not one but two new DivisionHeads: Tim Illingworth to take on theDealers’ Room and Art Show, whichwill be located together in SECC Hall3, and Ewan Chrystal, who moves upfrom Area Head to look after the Con-course activities in Hall 2. We alsowelcome Deb Geisler to the Chair’sstaff, where she will be particularlyhelping us with communications andrecruitment.

Other highlights for us since PR3include:• Another 600 members, taking the

total up to 3,620 as of 8 February2005.

• Many more accommodation book-ings, with over 2,000 people nowbooked into our accommodationblocks by Infotel.

• Our fourth Staff Weekend, whichwas held in Glasgow on 5-6 Febru-ary 2005 and attracted over 50 staff.

• The publication of initial lists ofconfirmed participants in the Deal-ers’ Room and Art Show.

• Judging of the Hugo Base designentries – although of course we can-not reveal the winner until the HugoCeremony itself.

Another particular highlight, which iscovered in more detail in this PR, is theannouncement of our initial list of overseventy confirmed programme partici-pants. We are truly delighted that somany of the major figures of the fieldhave committed to attend and partici-pate in the convention. We are alsopleased to see such a diverse group,with strong representation from theUK and Europe as well of course asfrom the US, and from all aspects ofthe genre from hard SF to fantasy, aswell as from the worlds of comics,gaming, and media.

With less than five months to go, ourplans for the convention are welladvanced. In this article we’ll take youon a quick journey through space andtime, to help you make your plans forthe weekend. Details are provisional atthis stage, of course, but we are hope-ful that there should not be too manymajor changes from now on.

The SiteThe main site is very compact, as canbe seen from the aerial photographbelow. The heart of the area is theSECC complex, consisting of theSECC itself, the Clyde Auditorium –often known as the ‘Armadillo’(ARM), and the Moat House Hotel(MH).

The three parts of the complexare linked by internal corridors sothere’s no need to go outside whenmoving around the site.

A footbridge across the Clydetakes you to the Glasgow ScienceCentre (GSC), which includes a Sci-ence Mall, an IMAX cinema, and anobservation tower.

The SECC complexitself consists of twosets of Halls, run-ning down eitherside of a central cor-ridor known as the‘SECC Concourse’(not to be confusedwith our own ‘Inter-action Concourse’, which you willread about elsewhere in this PR).

On the right-hand side of theSECC Concourse, as you look downfrom the entrance at the Armadillo endof the site, the first Hall you will see isHall 5, which will be our largest regu-lar programme room, holding over1,000 people, and will also host the

Opening Ceremony on Thursday after-noon and the Closing Ceremony onMonday afternoon. At the far end isHall 3, which will hold our Dealers’Room and Art Show. (Hall 4, the verylarge hall that we used for our Fan Fairin 1995, is not being used this time).

On the other side of the SECCConcourse is the Loch Suite: a confer-ence suite with a dozen or so pro-gramme rooms. Next to that is Hall 1,which will be the main registrationarea and your first port of call on arriv-ing at the convention. Finally, Hall 2will be our own Concourse area, hold-ing exhibits, catering, fan tables andvarious information functions.

The Armadillo holds over 3,000people and will be the venue for theMasquerade on Saturday evening andthe Hugo Award Ceremony on Sundayevening.

Escalators and corridors link theSECC to the Moat House Hotel, whichwill have more programme rooms,three video rooms (two streams ofgeneral video and one stream ofanime), two gaming rooms, and a fanlounge. We have to be out of the SECCby midnight each day, so in general thefocal point of the on-site conventionactivities will migrate towards theMoat House during the evening. Late-night filk will also be run in the MoatHouse.

Planning Your WeekendThe grid below shows the planned opening times for themain convention activities and the provisional timings forsome of the main events. Generally, peak hours for mostactivities are between 10am and 6pm each day, although theConcourse will remain open until 10pm, and of course theVideo and Games Rooms will continue into the small hours.

We expect the bulk of the main programme to finishat 7pm each day (everyone has to eat some time!), althoughthere will be some evening programme including readingsand some lighter items in the Moat House, as well as thelate-night filk.

Thursday and Monday will have shorter hours due tothe need to set up and tear down the convention. On Thurs-day, most activities will really only get going between 12noon and 2pm; we will try to open the Concourse earlier.Thursday morning is therefore a great time for orientationand sightseeing, for instance, taking one of the city bustours, some of which have pick-ups at the SECC. TheTourist Board will have staff on site from Wednesday toprovide information and assistance. You may also want tospend some time in the Science Centre, which is only aminute’s walk away, across the footbridge to the other sideof the river, and is highly recommended.

On Monday, we expect to hold the closing ceremonyat 4pm; all activities will wind down in the hour or twobefore that to give people time to start packing up.

Finally, for those planning to arrive early, we plan toopen pre-registration as early as we can during the run up tothe convention. We certainly expect to have a full registra-tion service available throughout the day on Wednesday, andif possible, we will also have at least a core pre-registrationservice available through part of Tuesday as well. If you’recoming early, please come to Hall 1 and we’ll try to help.

Glasgow’s shipbuilding heritage waspartly responsible for the 1995 Worldconbeing held in Scotland for the first time.The former George V docks on the Clydejust west of the city centre were filled inand work begun on a new national exhi-bition and conference centre, the SECC,which was opened in 1985. The mid1980s were also the peak period of thefirst generation of Glasgow conventions,which were based in regular hotels intown, including the gently decaying butgloriously gothic Central Hotel. A few ofus who worked on those cons kept oureyes on the developments at the SECC tosee whether we could make use of them,although at the time therewasn’t an attached hoteland the conference facili-ties were much too largefor our needs. MarkMeenan and I arranged togo visit the SECC justbefore Conspiracy, the1987 Worldcon inBrighton. We wereimpressed both by whatwas available and by howkeen the managementwere about the idea ofhosting a Worldcon. Wealso heard that an onsite hotel, the Glas-gow Forum Hotel (later renamed theMoat House), would be opening in 1989.

Many of us worked at Conspiracyand you can read more about it in thearticle by Paul Oldroyd in Interaction’sPR2. It was my first Worldcon (havingbeen too young to attend the 1979Brighton Worldcon, which Peter Westonwrote about in PR1) and despite themuch publicised problems, I reallyenjoyed myself and was impressed bythe scale and range of the participants,programming and other events and facil-ities. I don’t remember doing so, but thatimpression must have been expressedpublicly because the first issue of the UKmagazine Critical Wave in October 1987led with the headline “Scots WorldconBid”, revealing Glasgow might bid forthe Worldcon “in the early 1990s”. Atwo-man working party, Vince Dochertyand Mark Meenan, planned to visit the

SECC (identified as the likely site)before compiling a feasibility study. Twopotential dates were mentioned, 1993(“which will be voted on at the 1990Worldcon in Holland”) and 1995.

In fact, there wasn’t a great deal ofactivity for a while as I had moved toLondon to work for Shell just after Con-spiracy. But the idea still lurked and I cir-culated a flier and questionnaire andpressed as much flesh as I could at con-ventions and meetings in London andGlasgow during 1988 to gauge supportfor a Worldcon bid, building on the les-sons from Conspiracy. Many reflectedhow successful Conspiracy had been in

terms of Programming and ‘punter’ sat-isfaction, and how unsuccessful it was interms of the amount of negative ‘politi-cal’ activity that took place prior to, dur-ing, and after the con. After all that I stillonly had a very small group of interestedpeople. The key to it, in part, was thesuccess of the Eastercon that year (andthe following), but mostly it was a con-vention called Conscription – the first‘Conrunners’ con in Britain. It wasremarkable how quickly the apathy andfugue of Conspiracy disappeared whenwe realised the number of people whowere genuinely interested in runningconventions. And when the BirminghamICC gave a presentation, it generated ahuge amount of discussion and specula-tion regarding possible Worldcons.

After Conscription, a small groupof us met in my house in London andformed a proto-Worldcon bid committee,including Martin Easterbrook, Tim

Illingworth, Hugh Mascetti, HenryBalen, John Stewart, Kathy Westhead,John Fairey, and others. This was againreported in Critical Wave – the ninthissue, in February 1989, led with“UK Worldcon Bid Launched” andannounced the creation of a governingboard to oversee staff recruitment, siteselection, and the choice of target years.We had a number of options both for siteand year. Brighton was out of the ques-tion because of the raw wounds from1987, but facilities in Jersey (the DeFrance and Fort Regent), Glasgow (theSECC and Forum) and Birmingham (theICC) all looked possible and we

arranged a series of sitevisits to check them outfor financial and logisticalsuitability.

The ICC is the per-fect Worldcon site in theUK as it has the right bal-ance of small and largerooms; it is located in thecity centre with excellentnational and internationaltravel links; there arenumerous hotels nearby.The killer problem is thecost – to hire the ICC for a

Worldcon would cost the best part of amillion pounds and no amount of negoti-ation or comparison with the alternativeswould budge the price because the ICCis always in demand.

Jersey, on the other hand, costalmost nothing by comparison and wasvery keen to have us. The problem wasthat the convention would be split in twowith the De France Hotel and FortRegent centre several kilometers apartwith the city centre in between.

Glasgow worked best for us onboth counts, as the cost was reasonable,helped by a grant from the city council.(In the US, hotel groups generally ownthe conference centres, so the ‘all-in’package of programme space with hotelbeds is relatively cheap. In the UK, thesesites are expensive, hence our need todefray the costs.) Most of the conventioncould be held at a single site, with onlythe evening parties held in the city.

The choice of date was morecomplex. In simple terms, the date wasdetermined by the likely Americanopposition. In 1995, we were possiblyfacing Atlanta, who had run a successfulWorldcon in 1986, and a Texas bid waslikely for 1997. At the 1989 WorldconNoreascon 3 in Boston, Henry talked tothe fans most knowledgeable aboutbidding and determined that 1995 wouldbe the year where our support would bestrongest. He also recruited a NorthAmerican coordinator for the bid,Theresa Renner (TR).

Based on all the research to date, ata final site meeting in Glasgow early in1990 we agreed to bid on the basis ofGlasgow in 1995. This allowed us topromote the bid very strongly at the 1990Worldcon in The Hague (only the secondContinental European Worldcon) calledConFiction. We knew that the DutchWorldcon would have to be a success ifwe were to have any chance of winning,so many of the bid committee alsoworked on ConFiction. Despite somereduction in trans-Atlantic attendancescaused by the upcoming Gulf War,ConFiction was a great success, with themost diverse membership by nationalityof any Worldcon, and was energising forthe then newly accessible fandoms of theformer Warsaw pact. The Glasgow bidgathered enormous support from acrossEurope, which helped us greatly with ourpromotions.

In years when the Worldcon isheld outside North America, there canbe a NASFiC, or ‘North AmericanScience Fiction Convention’. In 1990,this was held a week after ConFiction inSan Diego and a number of us wentacross to promote the bid. ConDiegoproved to be less than completelysuccessful – it was famously nicknamed‘ConDigeo’ due to the number of typosin the souvenir book – but we promotedthe bid as much as possible and tried tohave fun. The main con hotel, the Omni,went out of business shortly after andone of the boxes of bid materials sent byTR didn’t get back to her; we assumed itlost in the basement of the hotel. Itarrived unexpectedly at TR’s place twoyears later, presumably sent by somekind soul in the new management of thehotel.

At this stage, our bidding was infull flow. In the US, TR had set up astrong organisation based near her in theBaltimore-Washington area and had a‘production-line’ process for promotionat cons. We has also formalised the struc-ture of the bid committee with TimIllingworth and I co-chairing and, with areasonably large group of us basedaround London, we were able to haveregular meetings. This was particularlyimportant as we knew, based on the fall-out from the problems in 1987, that wewere missing a lot of hands-on experi-ence from previous UK Worldcons andwe had to ensure we had enough peopleto make running the con viable.

Bidding dominated all our lives,especially as the Atlanta bid were prov-ing to be very strong, although in gener-al, we had extremely good relations withthem, especially their bid chair, DonCook. We made sure we were represent-ed at the key regional cons in the USattended by many voters. Tim, in partic-ular, visited the US many times, promot-ing the bid tirelessly at conventions andestablishing a good network of contacts.We also marketed ourselves stronglyusing themes from Scotland and Glas-gow as much as possible. At our bidtables and parties we played the Scottishcard as far as we could, with tartan dec-orations and badge stickers and whisky-tastings and our merchandising included

branded t-shirts, mugs and water bottles,as well as material from the GlasgowTourist Board, who strongly supportedus. Our parties became famous in the USfor their energy and atmosphere. At the1991 Worldcon in Chicago, our bid partyincluded parading a haggis, with TRwielding the knife (in an entirely non-threatening way of course) and me recit-ing the famous Burns poem.

The final year of bidding dawnedin 1992 and we had a lot to prepare, bothfor the Worldcon at which the biddingwould take place – Magicon in Orlando,Florida – as well as all the decisions andmaterials needed on the assumption wewon the bid. This included choosing aname for the con and selecting ourGuests of Honour. The con’s name wassuggested by Mike Westhead and incor-porated the name of our convention cen-tre, hence ‘InterSECtion’, although weused the regular format ‘Intersection’ inpractice.

One of the most memorable eventsof the bid happened early in 1992 whenTim and I flew into Atlanta for the Deep-SouthCon. We arrived just as the RodneyKing riots were happening in several UScities, including Atlanta. Fortunately thecon was held outside the city and wedidn’t experience any problems, exceptfor a visibly increased police presence,which did reduce a lot of the late nightsocial activities. We decided to havesome fun at the DSC bidding session asBirmingham, Alabama, was bidding, sowe presented a spoof bid for Birming-ham, South England. Luckily, we didn’twin, but there were some votes for us!

The 1992 Worldcon, Magicon, wasour biggest challenge and we startedearly by meeting in Washington DC atTR’s house where our bidding materialhad been assembled. We took this in twolarge trucks down the main East Coasthighway, I-95, which was also used asthe name of a spoof bid that year. I dis-tinctly recall our arrival in Orlando, as aserendipitously arranged rocket launchfrom Cape Canaveral took place and wasclearly visible to us from the highway.

Magicon was a bit of a blur, as weran a party each night before the biddingclosed on Saturday, with vast amounts ofwhisky and other things Scottish, muchof it supplied by our friends at the Tourist

Board, who were also present atthe con. A miniature golf coursewas set up in the exhibits areawhere the fan tables were locatedand our empty whisky bottlesproved useful as we made theminto decoration and obstacles forour hole on the course. We alsoarranged a pipe band to comealong for a performance in theconvention centre, which simul-taneously delighted many fansand annoyed many dealers whenthey marched through the dealersroom. TR had arranged for anumber of hired kilts to be available forthe bid committee. This proved to be abit problematic for those who hadn’tbrought their own, as the sporrans (thedecorative bag which hangs at the front)were made of wood and had a tendencyto swing painfully.

The bidding closed at 6pm on theSaturday, and we had arranged to do theballot counting immediately after. Weknew that there had been a record sizednumber of votes – about 2,600 – as thebidding had been very competitive, andwe were concerned how long the countwould take, since the previous year ithad infamously taken all night. To ourgreat fortune, it only took a couple ofhours and the result was that we had wonby a clear, if narrow majority with Glas-gow 1,310, Atlanta 1,147, and others107. Analysis showed that we took about300 non-North American votes whichensured we won. At that time it was tra-ditional not to say who had won till thebusiness meeting the next day, so ourcommittee met in my hotel room to planfor the next day when we would beannounced as winners and thentake memberships for the con.Despite the surprise of somethat we actually won such ahard-contested race, this workedout well and we left Magiconwith suitcases literally full ofmembership forms, both for thebid and for the convention, andit took us months to processthem all.

Under the old three-yearbidding cycle, not much usuallyhappened in the first year of aWorldcon apart from processingmemberships and sending out a

Progress Report, so we hoped we wouldbe able to focus on recovering from thehuge bidding effort. As it turned out, Iwas sent to work in Oman shortly afterwinning, which meant we had to reor-ganize the committee. Martin Easter-brook took over from me as co-chairwith Tim for much of 1993, until Timresigned for personal reasons and I cameback on board as co-chair, workingmostly by email and via my deputy Mar-garet Austin, who acted on my behalf inthe UK. Email was becoming muchmore common then and we found it wasan essential tool for communicatingamong a dispersed committee, althoughwe had to be careful not to exclude thosewho weren’t yet online. The web wasalso in its infancy and we had a rudimen-tary website, based on work done by the1993 and 1994 Worldcons. We also ran aseries of weekend meetings for staff invarious places in the UK. These ‘StaffWeekends’ made an enormous differenceto the planning of the con as a lot morecould be achieved in person than overemail.

The years 1993 and 1994were dominated by our planningactivities and promoting the conto fans in the UK, North Ameri-ca and especially the rest of theworld via our extensive networkof agents and with some reducedmembership rates to encouragefans from Eastern Europeancountries. We also applied to beand became the 1995 Eurocon.Building on the large numbers ofvotes, we found ourselves withmembership numbers on thesame scale as regular US World-

cons. We promoted ourselves strongly atregular UK cons and at the two World-cons preceding us. The 1993 Worldcon,ConFrancisco, was held in the centre ofSan Francisco and was one of the largestto date. We continued with our strongScottish theme and again had a pipe band(which did double duty at the OpeningCeremony), ran a party and sold manymemberships. The 1994 Worldcon,ConAdian, was held in Winnipeg andwas most enjoyable. We had some offi-cial duties including running the post-Hugo party, which we named the‘Hugo-Nots’ and at the closing ceremo-ny, at which we surprised the memberswith a slow Scottish song followed by apipe band that had been hiding in thewings.

When 1995 arrived, we heardsome bad news in that a flood in Glas-gow had resulted in the closure of thelow level railway connecting the SECCwith the city centre for most of the year.This meant we had to supplement thelocal travel facilities by arranging for ashuttle bus service. Apart from that, our

plans continued with a massiverecruitment effort, especially inthe UK, where there was a mix-ture of enthusiasm and sometrepidation at the scale of thework ahead, and the lingeringdoubts from the problems of1987.

August 1995 arrived andwe found there was a heatwavein the UK. When I arrived fromOman, I found a Glasgow bask-ing in tropical heat, and theSECC, with its glass concourse,feeling literally like a green-house. We moved into the SECC

the Monday before the con andstarted building up as best wecould. This proved very useful asit meant that any bugs in our reg-istration process could be workedout early and when the rush cameon Thursday, there were fewproblems.

By the Wednesday we hada lot of people onsite and theshape of the con began to be vis-ible, such that by late that day,we were confident everythingwas as ready as it could be. Therewas a minor hiccup overnight asthe fire alarm in the Moat House hotelwas activated, and fans and authors min-gled in the cool night air – the hot weath-er having broken by then fortunately.The alarm was then triggered again bysomeone who returned to their room andshowered with the door open, though bythat time most people were so tired theyignored the alarm.

The con officially started on theThursday and everything went accordingto plan initially. The Opening Ceremonywas well attended and the Lord Mayorgave an excellent and informed welcomespeech, followed by some skits led byour ‘Toast Mr and Mrs’ Peter Morwoodand Diane Duane. A pipe band and alarge Chinese-looking Nessie then ledthe fans to another hall where the Cityhad arranged a civic reception, compris-ing (on our recommendation) a drink foreveryone. It was a great start and theatmosphere stayed positive over theweekend.

On the Friday we heard the newsthat dominated the convention – theunexpected death by natural causes inhis hotel room of John Brunner. Thishappened suddenly and we werefaced with having to communicatethe news to fans, support John’sfamily, and decide how to respondofficially. The fannish support net-work proved strong and RobertSilverberg gave a moving eulogyat the Hugo ceremony followed bya standing ovation for John, whichproved to be the perfect approach.

The convention programmehappened pretty much according toplan, from the largest events suchas the Masquerade and HugoAwards – followed by fireworks

over the Clyde – and Guest of Honourspeeches by Samuel R Delany, GerryAnderson, Les Edwards, and VincentClarke, to regular panels, presentations,videos, kaffeeklatsches, and autographs.

The SECC had a number of verylarge halls (it was often nicknamed ‘thebig red shed’) and we had decided tomake a virtue of necessity by creating aFan Fair containing the dealers’ room,art show, exhibits, fan tables, and a cou-ple of bouncy castles supplied by biddersin a single large hall. We even had a largedisplay from Microsoft, which releasedWindows 95 during the convention. Thisconcept had worked well at a number ofWorldcons, including Magicon, and itworked well for us in general.

The only problem occurred withsome function rooms we had constructedin the Fan Fair and a set of four in anoth-er of the large halls, to supplement thelimited number of rooms suitable forprogramme we had elsewhere. Therooms could not have ceilings due to fireregulations and so there was noisespillage, which caused complaints. TheFan Fair still proved to be the daytime

centre of the convention andoverall we felt it was a success.

In the evenings we hadarranged for two city centrehotels to host parties. The oldGlasgow favourite, the CentralHotel, hosted UK-style fanactivities and parties and thethen-Crest hotel hosted the US-style bid parties. This workedreasonably well though therewas some inconvenience due tothe distance between the sites.We found that the taxis in Glas-gow, the cheapest in the UK

then, as they are now, acted as a greatsupplementary transport service to fans,in addition to the shuttle buses.

We had also attempted to establishgood links with the media, and got someuseful reporting, but we were disappoint-ed by a documentary programme byChannel 4. This was supposed to reportthe con fairly but as its title ‘Beam me upScotty’ proved, it focused more on thecon and fans as caricatures. Similarly, acritical report in one of the local Sundaynewspapers about a woman who had feltcheated when she found we were not aTrek con, proved to be erroneous as thewoman had in fact received her moneyback.

These disappointments aside, thecon itself still proved to be a lively andextremely international event, with about4,200 fans from dozens of countries par-ticipating. At the closing ceremony onthe Monday, we thanked the guests,announced some final awards and thatwe expected to break even. (In fact, weeven managed to pass along some fundsto our successors – the first non-NorthAmerican Worldcon to do so.) We hand-

ed over the WSFS gavel to theChair of L.A.con III, Mike Glyer,who then invited fans to come toLA in 1996, not realizing that alarge Nessie was looming behindhim, though he got his revenge thefollowing year at the L.A.conopening when the carnivorousplant from ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ate me as I left the stage! Martinand I left the stage with a brief stopto shout ‘yes!!’ to the fans in thehall, and then Intersection wasofficially over and we promisednever to do it again. Ho ho.

Since the last European Worldcon wasten years ago, we expect that many ofour members will never have been to aWorldcon before. This article is aimedmainly at newcomers, but experiencedWorldcon fans are likely to find some-thing of interest too, especially in thearea of differences between a UK andUS Worldcon.

Lost and LonelyOne of the worst things that can happento you at a Worldcon is to find yourselfin the middle of 5,000 happy, boisterouspeople and not know anyone to talk to. Ifyou are new to conventions, or even justnew to Worldcon, it can seem like every-one knows everyone else except you. Ofcourse that’s not true. There are a hardcore of regulars who might knowbetween 10% and 20% of the member-ship. But most people at Worldcon onlyknow maybe 50 other members. Theyare almost as much at sea as you.

But there is a big differencebetween knowing 50 people and know-ing no one. So the first piece of adviceI’m going to give is Go With a Friend.Preferably several friends. That way youwill always have company. And ofcourse it helps with accommodationcosts and taxi costs. If you really don’tknow any other fans, or can’t persuadeyour friends to go, then try to make somefriends amongst your fellow membersbefore going. A good way to make friends at theconvention is to volunteer to help out withrunning the event. This need not be a bigburden on your time. Volunteers can do asmuch or as little work as they like. Andthere is a wide range of jobs on offer. Seeour volunteers page on the convention website for more information: www.interaction.worldcon.org.uk/volunteer.htm. Manylong-lasting friendships have been made inthis way. At my first Worldcon (Glasgowin 1995) I met people from San Franciscoand from Perth, Australia, who are stillgood friends today.

Possibly the biggest problem withhaving friends at Worldcon is actuallyfinding them in a sea of 5,000 people.That is why we have something called a‘Voodoo Board’. Why Voodoo? Becausewe print the names of every member onit and you get to stick pins in them (thenames, that is). One of the first thingsyou should do when you arrive at theconvention is find the Voodoo Board andput a tick against your name to confirmthat you are present. A pin stuck in yourname means that there is a message foryou from someone. You can find it in oneof the nearby file card boxes. To send amessage, just write it on a piece of paper,file it in the right alphabetical section ofthe boxes, and stick a pin in your friend’sname. Oh, and don’t forget to take thepin out of your name once you have readyour messages.

At this time, we are not quite surewhere the Voodoo Board will be, but itwill probably be in or near Hall 2. Checkyour Convention Guide (which you willget when you arrive) for an exact location.

Plan Your TimeSo what is this Convention Guide? Well,the very first thing you need to do whenyou arrive (except maybe check into

your hotel) is to go to Registration. Thereyou can pick up your membership badge(essential to get into the con), your Sou-venir Book, and your Convention Guide.And then you can plan, because the Con-vention Guide will tell you where every-thing is, and when everything is.

Why do you need to plan? Becauseat Worldcon there may be between 10and 15 different things going on at once,and you might want to go to three ofthem at the same time. Do you go to theTerry Pratchett book signing, the show-ing of that classic Anime movie you’vebeen hunting for a copy of for ages, orthe panel with the Dr. Who scriptwriteron it? Sometimes the decisions can bereally hard. But if you don’t plan, youmay miss something you would haveloved to go to, or you will get to 5pm anddiscover that you haven’t eaten sincebreakfast, you are starving, and you can’tgo eat because you really, really want togo to one of the 5pm panels.

Memo: carry a few chocolate barsor cereal bars, and a soft drink, aroundwith you.

Another good reason for planningis that some of the ‘fixed’ exhibits arenot open for the whole convention.Every year I tell myself I must go to theArt Show early. And every year I forget,and half of the entries have been sold orremoved for the auction before I getthere. Don’t be like me; get to the ArtShow early.

The NewsletterTalking of planning, as Robbie Burnsmight have said had he attended a World-con, the best-laid plans of programmingdepartments always go awry. Thingshappen. Panelists get sick, or have traveldisasters. Misunderstandings aboutavailabilities occur. Publishers demandurgent meetings. Whatever, not everyprogramme item will happen as planned.

What should happen as planned,however, is that all schedule changeswill be reported in the convention news-letter. This will be available at standsdotted around the convention. Make sure

Please write clearly.

Member ServicesWith a potential 5,000 or so people expect-ed to attend, we know that a few of ourmembers will have special needs whilethey are at the convention. The most obvi-ous is childcare. We will be providing aservice, and you will find an article aboutit elsewhere in this Progress Report.

For those of you with mobility,sight, hearing or other issues, or anyonewith a serious medical condition, theElectrical Eggs team will be on hand togive what help they can. Once againthere is an article about their serviceselsewhere in this Progress Report.

Should you have a medical emer-gency while you are at the convention,there is a First Aid Station in the SECC,staffed by a qualified doctor and para-medic staff. We should be able to copewith most emergencies, though perhapsnot all of the things that our more inven-tive author guests might dream up.

Non-medical emergencies alsooccur. For example, at last year’s World-con a good friend of mine lost her purse.If something like this happens, or indeedif you find a lost item, the first thing todo is go to our Operations Room. Thelocation of this will be given in the Con-vention Guide. The Operations Staff arethere to help. In the example I gave, themissing purse was there waiting to bepicked up. She had left it at a Dealers’Room table and they had handed it in.

Not in KansasOne of the more common questions weget from members is whether the con-vention will be somehow ‘different’because it is in Scotland, not in NorthAmerica. The simple answer is “Not

very much.” We speak approximately thesame language. We eat roughly the samefood. And drink more or less the samedrinks. Soda drinkers will find some-thing called Irn-Bru on sale. It is afamous Scottish drink, made in Glasgow.Give it a try. Driving is not permittedinside the convention centre so you don’thave to worry about being on the wrongside of the road. However, there will be afew notable differences.

The most obvious one is that therewill be no Con Suite. We are sorry. Wewould love to have one. But draconianhealth and safety laws, combined withthe higher cost of food in the UK, makethis impossible. There are several differ-ent types of eating areas inside the SECCitself, and of course in the Moat Houseand other nearby hotels. There will alsobe a restaurant listing in the ConventionGuide. Don’t forget to try Glasgow’scurry houses, which are amongst the bestin Britain.

There will be parties. We have acorkage waiver for the Hilton, and thathotel will host traditional Worldcon-styleparties. However, many fans will preferto spend some of their evenings in theMoat House where we will have a barserving some fine real ales and maltwhiskies. Not to mention that this will bethe site of the fabulous evening enter-tainment provided by the Plokta Cabal.OK, you’ll have to pay for your alcohol,but really good things never come free.

Meeting the ProsOne of the biggest attractions of World-con is the large number of authors whoattend. Naturally you will want to meetall of your favorites. Past experiencesuggests that many of them will be foundhanging around the bar in the MoatHouse of an evening. Others will browsethe parties in the Hilton. However, thebest way to get an (almost) one-to-onewith your favorite writer is to sign up fora Kaffeeklatsch or a Literary Beer.

A what? Well, one of the types ofprogramme items we will have on offeris a small and intimate session in whichan author sits down with a handful offans over a coffee or a beer, and chats tothem. Good huh? But the downside isthat we can’t offer this opportunity toeveryone. In order to make these ses-

sions genuinely intimate we have torestrict entry, and that means a sign-upprocedure. So check your ConventionGuide, and if someone you want to meetis doing one of these events make sureyou know how and when you can sign upfor a place.

Signings are another thing it paysto be on time for. The queues for some ofthe better-known writers at the BostonWorldcon last year seemed to stretch halfway to California. Our writer guests willtry to sign as many books as possible,but we have a schedule to keep to andthey only have so much time.

Getting around GlasgowThe Interaction site is a little morespread out than some Worldcons. Not allof the hotels are on the convention cen-tre site, and the majority of restaurantsare in the city centre, not near the con-vention centre. However, getting aroundGlasgow is not too difficult. There isplenty of public transport, and it is verycheap. Taxi fares into the city centrefrom the SECC are in the region of £4,depending on where you want to go.

Don’t ForgetFinally, it is amazing how easy it is toforget things. Eating, for example. I tend

to make sure that I have a big breakfast(something I never do normally) becauseI never know when something will comeup during the day that prevents me fromhaving time for lunch. You can also for-get to sleep. There you are, chattingaway with a bunch of new friends in thebar, and suddenly you realize that it is4am, and you want to be up for a 10ampanel later that day. Not forgetting tomake time for that big breakfast. Goingwithout sleep may seem easy on the firstnight, but after several days the effectsstart to show. So please, don’t forget toeat, don’t forget to sleep, and the occa-sional shower comes in handy too.

We currently have two priorities aheadof the start of Interaction: organisingthe provision of mobility aids for fanswith significant problems, and recruit-ing a team of enthusiastic volunteers tohelp us on the day (more of that later).

So far, we have received 13requests for a wheelchair/scooter andthe deadline for advance bookings is24 June (snail mail) or 1 July (email).Although we anticipate some ‘walkingwounded’ when the convention starts,fans are encouraged to contact us assoon as possible. We plan to have pow-ered and manual mobility aids avail-able, approximately 10 of each, whichwill be allocated according to need.This equipment is being provided foruse in the main site only (SECC, ClydeAuditorium & Moat House) and adaily refundable deposit will becharged, which will be retained if theequipment is damaged or lost.

We would also like to hear fromfans travelling with a Service Animal;fans who would like a ‘talking’ Con-vention Guide (which we may be ableto supply) and/or large print publica-

tions (with an average 15pt font size);and fans who communicate by lipreading and/or sign language (BSL).

We plan to have an Eggs Office toprovide a focal point for all accessservices & enquiries, but that requiresa big team of volunteers. Our AccessGophers will have a range of dutiesincluding:

• Manning our office and dealingwith enquiries.

• Supervising the distribution andstorage of hired equipment.

• Providing individual assistance toService Users.

• Taking Service Animals out for abreak.

• Supervising signage and checkingareas for potential hazards.

Just think – the Worldcon is one of thelargest volunteer-run events in theworld. It only happens because hun-dreds of people like you, fans of sci-ence fiction and fantasy, give a little oftheir time to make this huge and excit-ing event happen. So why not volun-teer?

Organising an event like Interac-tion takes all kinds of skills, and youdon’t need to have any previous con-running experience to be a volunteer.For most con work, volunteers don’tneed any special skills or knowledge,or we’ll help you get them. Other posi-tions use skills you may have acquiredthrough work, hobbies, or other areasof life outside of fandom. Whateveryour talents and experience, we canuse you!

And there are benefits. Somefans learn hugely valuable skillsthrough volunteering, while othershave ‘just’ (!) had a wonderful timeand made a heap of new friends. Vol-unteers in Registration, Ops, and Secu-rity (and pretty much everywhereelse!) get to meet authors, artists, andeditors, not to mention countless otherfans. Masquerade volunteers have thechance to see those amazing costumesup close, and help their talented cre-ators put them on. Art Show volunteershave the opportunity to see gorgeousartwork, and talk to the artists whobrought them to life. Every volunteergets to share in the buzz of making thisamazing event happen.

Quite a bit has happened in the monthssince PR3, and the Programme divi-sion has made good progress on manyfronts. The various areas within pro-gramme are developing ideas for adiverse and entertaining programme.The literary and art teams are refiningtheir initial ideas, and the fan pro-gramme is similarly brainstormingaway. You’ll read more about the sci-ence programme below, and be suit-ably updated about the fan programmeby the Plokta Cabal’s insert in this PR.We’re also looking forward to interest-ing video and anime programmes. Youcan read a little more about these plansbelow.

We’re especially looking for-ward to working with our Guests ofHonour to develop a programme thatreflects their interests and their contri-butions to SF and fandom. You willalso find an initial list of programmeparticipants in this Progress Report.This is just a sample of what is in storefor you at Interaction. Interaction isalso the 2005 Eurocon, which will bean important focus point for the pro-gramme. As always, the web site willhave the most current information onour plans.

Since you last heard from us, wehave made a structural change to theprogramme schedule. The typicalWorldcon programme is comprisedmostly of either hour-long slots or 90-minute slots. While we’d initiallyopted for the latter, we’ve decided toimplement a hybrid approach. We willrun 75-minute items in 90-minute slotsduring the peak afternoon hours of 2through 5 o’clock. This will both allowus to apply extra focus to high profileitems, and give a little bit of elbowroom to those that don’t quite fit in 50minutes. The shorter but still substan-tial hour-long slots in the morning andlate afternoon will help preserve thebreadth and diversity of the pro-gramme.

We’ve had quite a few personnelchanges, in addition to acquiring a newdivision head and deputy. ClaireWeaver has taken over art programme.

Jim Mann, in addition to coming onboard as deputy division head, is han-dling media programme. He succeedsMargaret Austin, whose contributionswill be sorely missed. We’d also like towelcome Alison McBain, who will berunning our autographing sessions.We’ve built a geographically diverseteam: in addition to the core teambased in Britain and Ireland, we haveparticipation from both coasts of theUS, Upper Canada, and a temporaryresident in the Canadian Maritimes.

As is always the case, the reali-ties of press deadlines mean that muchof this is history by the time you holdthis document in your hands. Be sureto check the Interaction web site for anupdated list of participants and otherlate breaking news.

Science ProgrammeThe Interaction science programmewill be wide-ranging and diverse, butrunning through it will be a centraltheme we’re terming ‘Dreams andReality’. SF is a literature that doesn’tjust say “what if we could do this?” butasks “what are the consequences –intended and unintended – if doing thisbecame possible and common?” Forthe science programme we aim to fea-ture plenty of the former – but also ahealthy dose of the latter.

The last few years have seen dra-matic advances of the sort that makeeven jaded hard-SF geeks pinch them-selves and realise that the future hasarrived. Cloned kittens, postcards fromTitan, private spaceflight, and near-ubiquitous mobile net access are just afew examples, and we are puttingtogether a strong track of talks andpanels exploring these and other excit-ing developments. However, over thesame period we have seen real-worldreality colliding with such aspirations:mass-lawsuits against file-sharers, anet drowning under malware andspam, and a meaningful human pres-ence in space seemingly further awaythan ever. In recognition of this, wewill feature a complementary track ofitems taking a critical look at the Brave

New World promised by some of ourmost cherished hard-SF concepts, andasking the hard questions about howsuch a world is turning out, or will turnout, in practice.

By the time you get this, we will haverigger gloves and protective eye gog-gles sorted, but there are so manythings that you can bring along to theconvention that will make it easier toparticipate. YAFA is all about partici-pation, and we would like as many ofyou to get involved as possible.

We will also need to be responsi-ble, and will use the initiation to regis-ter younger members, in case of anaccident or some disaster. YAFA is nota child minding service; we are a placewhere people aged between 10 and 19can come, find refuge, and getinvolved with (un)conventional events.

The three parts of gettinginvolved start now. Find out what’sgoing on, so that you know. Get thestuff to do the things that are going on.Check out the web site for updates.

Shopping List(some stuff you may need)

• A light blue shirt, beige combats,black waistcoat, boots.

We will visit charity shops and what-not, so if you can’t bring everything

there isn’t a worry, but having this stuffalong will help. Most of the seriousstuff like rockets and armoured vehi-cles we will be getting. Everyone onceinitiated will get a special YAFA pack-age of stuff that may be useful: pres-sure bandages, batons, hair clips, aband aid, Irn-Bru – that sort of thing,the essentials.

An Appeal for LEGOWe have a mad plan involving electricLego trains of the future that will bedoing battle. To this end, we areappealing to all members to bringalong any old Lego they don’t wantreturned – as it burns nastily – so thatwe can make good use of it. Alsomembers can bring along stuff theythink we might find useful – all dona-tions welcome.

In the words of Billy Corgan:“We only come out at Night.” We willhave some sort of mad entry into themasquerade. Details are sketchy rightnow (like permission etc.) but to assist

those of you, like Stef and me, who feellike muppets when we are on stage,there’ll be a big gang of us entering. Itwill be loud. You will need old clothes.I need to get permission, but it will befine, honest.

There will also be many partieson each night, and although there will

not be an official YAFA party, therewill be other places where we will bewelcome. Well, we hope we’ll be wel-come. Party info will be available atthe convention, no doubt.

Progress(warning: boring bit)

Well, it’s going OK. So far no one hashad a freak-out about most of the thingswe want to do, although we will bemeeting with some Health and Safetyofficers, and we need to follow newlaws in regard to air soft (BB) guns. Wedon’t have the budget for the armouredvehicle we initially wanted, but havefound a suitable replacement. Plans forthe HarrisFuge are coming on well,with an axle offering a solution to theproblem of finding a workable bearing.

We have been liaising with otherbits of the convention, and meetingshave occurred with the likes of FarahMendlesohn, and meetings will be tak-ing place with other area heads, tyingin with some of their themes. There aremeetings planned with the GlasgowScience Centre, and we hope to have astrong link with the anime programme.

SpaceWe have been allocated some space inHall 3. Surprisingly, we have exactlythe type of space we need, an area torelax in comfy furniture, chill out, lis-ten to CDs, mess around with games,and play buckaroo, and escape fromsome of the clamour, which can turninto a room for talks and workshopswhen required. And a large area next to

this where we can have more activestuff going on, and where we can storeitems, like protective mats and halfpipes. This is situated next to access tothe car park. We have a large spaceallocated and cordoned off for our soleuse when we want to build castles andwreck cars.

We hope to see you there. YAFAis inclusive which means we will lookafter you even when we are attachingyou to something that appears to meancertain death.

We just want to have a goodtime, and for everyone to have a goodtime.

The childcare at Interaction isdesigned for all children aged between6 weeks and 10 years. There will bethree separate groups for children ofdifferent ages. These will be run in dif-ferent rooms with separate activitiesand carers.

Group one under 2½ years old;Group two 2½ to 5½ year olds;Group three over 5½ years old.

Children under 11 years old are alsowelcome in the YAFA programme, ifaccompanied by an adult. Of course,discretion will need to be applied as towhich activities younger children cansensibly take part in, and safety con-siderations will always be paramount.

As stated on the web site and in ourprevious PR, because the laws and leg-islation in Scotland state that childcaremust be provided by registered profes-sionals, Interaction childcare will beprovided by Happitots. They are a pro-fessional childcare company recom-mended by the Care Commission.They also provide after school activi-ties for older children in some of theirareas. The article below shows the typeof activity they will provide. We will

also be liaising with Happitots on otherideas to entertain the children.

To guarantee a place for your

child in our fun-filled facility we rec-

ommend pre-booking their place.

Guidelines for late orabandoned childrenIn the event that a child is late being

collected from the childcare facility we

will follow these guidelines:

1. Two staff will remain with the child.

2. Staff will attempt to contact the

child’s parents using the numbers

available on the registration form.

3. If the parents are unavailable we

will try the emergency contact num-

bers if relevant.

4. If unable to contact parents or

emergency contacts by telephone, a

public address system announce-

ment will be made.

5. A parent/carer arriving late to col-

lect a child will be politely remind-

ed of the collection times and asked

to ensure late collection does not

occur again.

6. In the event of a second late collec-

tion an additional charge will be

made.

7. In the event of a third occurrence we

would ask the parent not to use the

crèche facility.

In the very unlikely event

that we are absolutely

unable to con-

tact a child’s

parents or

carers and

have waited for

more than one

hour after closure

time we would treat this as

an abandoned child situation.

If a child has been abandoned at the

crèche facility we would liaise with the

convention organisers, and may in

extreme cases have to contact local

social services. The social services

number will be available at the recep-

tion area.

LanguageAlthough children, especially smallchildren, do not usually have difficultyin communicating with each other, weare aware that there may be difficultyin communication between staff andchildren if your child does not speakEnglish. We recommend that prior tothe convention you use picture cardswith your child showing some com-mon requests, such as toilet, hungry,thirsty, sad. Your child can show theseto the carer as needed. It is also recom-mended that you write down a fewbasic words and phrases to give to thecarer to use.

SecurityHappitots have a very comprehensivesecurity policy. The first time a child istaken to childcare, a digital photographof the parents or guardians will betaken. These are for security purposesto ensure the safety of the children, andwill be deleted at the end of the con-vention. Your child will not be allowedto be out of the childcare area withanyone who Happitots do not have aphotograph of. A copy of emergencyprocedures will also be issued to allparents and guardians.

Each time you take your child tothe childcare area you will be requiredto complete a signing in form, and signagain when you pick your child up.You will also be expected to give con-tact details, in case of any problems.

CostsThe cost for childcare service is £3.00per hour per child ($5.65 / 4.40). Inorder to give Happitots an idea of thenumber of staff they will need to pro-vide, we strongly encourage advanceregistration. The number of availableplaces for childcare will also be limit-ed by space, and we allocate on a first-come, first-served basis. You will beable to register by completing the formon our web site. This can be found atwww.interaction.worldcon.org.uk/childcare.htm. Pre-registration before 21June 2005 will entitle you to 4 hoursfree childcare. Pre-registration alsoallows you to specify and reserveblocks of childcare hours before theconvention. It will help ensure the bestpossible care for your children. Wecannot guarantee space if you are notpre-registered.

Evening BabysittingHappitots staff have agreed to providesome evening babysitting at the cost of£6 per hour ($11.16 / 8.74). This rateis per hour, for the babysitter’s time,and is for a maximum of 3 children.This will be a private arrangementbetween yourself and Happitots. Youcan make contact with the availablebabysitters directly, using the contactdetails provided on the web site.

Interthingy“The Bit in the Middle”

This is the last progress report before the con, and we have a special message for everyone who is working onInteraction:

It’s 166 days to Worldcon. We’ve got a full suite of function space, half a fan programme, it’s dark, and we’reusing PowerBooks. Hit it.

Gosh, the summer of 2005. Doesn'tit seem a long way off? That's theweird thing about dates thesedays. They always feel a long wayin the future, even when they'reactually in the past.

As we write, we're just puttingtogether the finishing touches tothe programme. We'll be runningfrom Thursday afternoon toMonday lunchtime or so. The aimis to have physical activities firstthing in the morning, to shake offthe cobwebs and distract youfrom the fact the bar isn't open

yet. These will include bellydancing, juggling, and thoseweird video games that areoperated with your feet. We'llmove more into our seriouspanels, quizzes and examinationsof the finer points of the fannishpsyche later in the day. Anyresemblance to the sort ofprogramming more commonlyfound on Radio 4 is unlikely to beaccidental. Later in the evening,and on into the night, we willdegenerate into riotousdebauchery. Oddly, that may also

the finer fannish sensibilities ofour guests of honour, and hope tobring together people fromaround the world who have neverpreviously appeared on the samestage. We will aim to explore theexperience of fandom, both tohelp out those who are new to it(ooh, welcome, good to see you,don't worry, we always make newfans wear white and go barefoot,and this knife isn't really sharp)and to help restore the fadingmemories of the long in the tooth(I remember when I ripped thebeating heart out of my firstneofan with my bare hands. Sorry,don't worry, that's only PatMcMurray). We will keep a closeeye on the zeitgeist as it whistlespast us, and we will tackle thethings that are exercising fans inthe summer of 2005.

Thanks to the terrifyingpublishing schedule for thisprogress report, we’re actuallywriting this in February, and thereare still six months to go until thecon. So although we have a prettygood idea of what we're going todo, we're not yet clear about whenor who is going to do it. No doubtwe'll have sorted all that stuff outby the time you receive thisprogress report -- which on pasttrack record is likely to be inOctober. That means that if you'rea fannish giant, sitting snippilywondering why we haven't askedyou to be on the programme, youjust have to wait a little whilelonger. Or you could always writeto us and tell us about that thingyou do that has them all institches.

This also means that thanks to theequally terrifying schedule for thepocket programme, we may haveto have some gaps in theprogramme where we're going toput in the stuff that's actuallytimely. Who knows? You'll justhave to come along, so you don'tmiss the key fannish momentsyou'll need to claim you were at in25 years time.

Here's the one thing you need toprepare for now. Our theme nightwill be on Friday night, to avoidclashing with the Hugos and

Masquerade. In a change to ourpreviously announced plans, thetheme will be Space Pirates,allowing everyone who was at<plokta.con> Release 3.0 torecycle their costumes providedthey add a blaster or something.Don't worry if you had alreadystarted on a Mars costume; justadd an eyepatch and a parrot andyou'll be fine.

You mustn't worry, however, thatyou'll be pummelled into activity.We promise that people who justwant to sit and quietly catch upover a beer with that fan they lastmet in 1988 will have plenty ofchance to do that too, and space todo it in. We have a great loungeand bar space. If you've not beento a UK con before, you probablyhaven't seen anything quite like

this. It's not a con suite (we can'tserve free food or drink in theMoat House), and it's not like anAmerican hotel bar. It's just aplace to drink, and chat, and hangout with fans from around theworld.

Since the last PR, we've made avisit north to marvel at thewonder that is the SECC site.Much improved since 1995, thereare now at least two restaurantswithin walking distance. And acasino. The programme rooms allhave ceilings, at least until JamesBacon's Young Adult programmegets underway. A crop of weirdfuturistic buildings have sprungup on the other side of the Clyde,which turn out to be the GlasgowScience Centre. The fan room isclose enough to all the other

We've noticed that for many of you, your very first convention was Conspiracy,the 1987 UK Worldcon in Brighton. And that means that at Interaction, you'll allhave been fans for 18 years! Wow. You've come of age. OK, that means there arecertain privileges. Turns out that you're allowed to sit in the bar and tellanecdotes about how it isn't the same as it was in your day. You can vote inTAFF! Though I wouldn't bother; it's rigged by a secret cabal. You can producefanzines unaccompanied, and are no longer limited to those of less than fourpages and with a no-shagging disclaimer. When Vince Docherty asks you towork on a Worldcon you can tell him to go xxxx himself [Ed: I think we'd betterput some black bars on that bit] You are granted a provisional feuding license (notvalid in Sweden). Oh, yes, and you can drink in real ale bars.

We've even produced an identity card. Produce it whenever Ted Whitequestions your credentials. Oh, yes, and we want to know who you are. Showus the card and you might find yourself on a 'Fandom: the Previous Generation'panel.

[We’re hoping to capture somethingof the atmosphere of a <plokta.con> inthe Interaction fan room and fanprogramme. But most of our readerswon’t ever have attended a<plokta.con>, so to give you the idea,here’s a reprint of the con report onthe first one by our Guest of Honour,Ken MacLeod. CAROL and I arrived about 6.30and had just enough time to go toour rooms before I was on the firstpanel, on ‘Superfluous technology— the dark side’. I’d thought itwas frivolous but Julian Headlonghad some serious points aboutsurveillance tech etc, and betweenhim and Caroline Mullan (fromthe audience) I didn’t have muchto say, which was probably just aswell. Julian wound me upsomething wicked by talkingabout ‘cognitive engineering’ as ifhe’d just read about it in NewScientist, instead of in A Deepness inthe Sky.

At the opening ceremony we wereall urged to drink the real ale,which the cabal had underwritten.We made a start. Dave Hickswandered around with IanSorensen’s name badge, whichmust have been very confusing tonobody. After a drink or twoCarol and I went out to getdinner, and after a short tour of

Leicester arrived at the nearestrestaurant to the con, theAlhambra, which served MiddleEastern/North African food andwas great. By the time wereturned it was quite late and afteranother drink or two we went tobed.

The following morning we got upbright and early around ten andhad breakfast about eleven.Breakfasts at the Holiday Inn werevery good indeed and got lots ofappreciative comment. I managedto miss their most appreciatedfeature — enormous waffles withmaple syrup.

Just before the con, one of Carol’sfriends had wangled her a freeticket for a live televised show byher favourite band, so she left forLondon early in the afternoon. Iwent to the rescheduledpresentation of Thog’s Masterclass— a fine performance, which hadall eyes and ears glued to DaveLangford.

Amanda Baker and friendsimpressed everyone with theirtactical shopping in Leicester,returning in gorgeous salwarkameez.

After a quick scoot aroundLeicester town centre to stock upon cigarettes I had another pint ortwo of real ale and did my GoHspeech. ‘The Secret Histories’ wasjust an account of some of the realevents I’d distorted andexaggerated for my novels, andwas structured around a trip Imade in the 70s to Prague and mymuch later discovery that the CIAhad (probably) been running theshow. As I said when I finished(putting down an empty glass ofreal ale) ‘The drink was on you,folks, but the joke was on me.’

The highlight of that evening wasa panel featuring what onlyseemed like a large fraction of thewomen present, called ‘How to bea complete bitch’. Lilian Edwards,Alison Freebairn, Sue Mason,Alison Scott, Naomi Saunders,Kari, Sue Dawson and ChristinaLake staked their claims to bequite nice, really.

At the UFF auction Guy Dawsonpaid £45 for the privilege of givinghis name to a political or religiousfaction in one of my novels. TheDawson Heresy, an effigy ofwhose gruesomely-martyredfounder and prophet is stillceremonially burned every winteron a certain imaginary planet,may well have been born rightthere.

After that it was more drinkinguntil after 2, when Carol returned.Alison Freebairn told me abouther Direct Aid trip to Bosnia,which was much scarier than mytrip to Prague.

I saved a G&T for Carol, and afterthat we went to bed, passing upthe offer of the Swedish room-party, for which Alison Freebairnwas recruited as hostess.

The following morning theSwedish room-party was exposedin gory detail, a sort of instantNews of the World scoop, as AlisonScott passed around a digitalcamera with pictures of Tobes inAlison Freebairn’s dress, a littlered frock covered with black lace,which had looked a lot better onher than it did on Tobes. Earnestdiscussion followed on to how tohelp Tobes with Sunday night’stheme, cleavage.

‘You need some sticky tape and atriple-A cup,’ Alison Scottexplained. The possibility was

mooted of auctioning for a fanfund the privilege of subsequentlyripping the sticky tape off.Fortunately nothing came of the‘Tits for Tobes’ project.

By Sunday lunchtime the fourbarrels of real ale and the forty-eight bottles of Scrumpy Jack werefinished. As the cabal hadguaranteed to buy any that wasleft this was a good thing, but it’sstill funny to see that even fans canunderestimate the fannishcapacity for beer.

After another cigarette expeditionand a little more drinking I did areading of the first few pages ofCosmonaut Keep, and answered afew questions.

The cabal took me out to dinner inthe same Chinese restaurant I’dbeen in the previous night, theAlhambra (their first choice) beingshut. Thus, courtesy of the Ploktacabal, I had possibly the second-biggest dinner I’ve ever had.(They took me to the biggestalready, at Novacon.)

At 10 there was a fan-artists’competition between Sue Mason,Dave Hicks and Steve Jeffrey. Theaudience was divided into fourgroups, the first to supply a name,the second a verb phrase, the thirdand adjective phrase and thefourth some kind of additionalmodifier. Well, something likethat. We all wrote our phrases onbits of paper and handed them in,whereupon they were shuffledand recombined.

I wrote ‘dripping fetid,blasphemous ichor from everypore’ which must have caughtsomeone’s fancy, because DaveHicks had to produce a lightningsketch of: Ken Livingstone havinga sauna in a corset dripping fetid,blasphemous ichor from everypore.

All good clean fun. Sue won, witha tour de force so dazzling that Ican’t remember the details:hiccups, diving-boards, and JackieChan’s stunt team all featured,and all made sense.

The next item was the CleavagePanel, which had been much builtup beforehand and which camewell up to expectations. SueMason explained how shediscovered corsetry throughEnglish Civil War re-enactments.(‘As a loose woman, it’s my dutyto give the pox to as many Papistsas possible.’ A number of listenersimmediately proclaimed theirallegiance to the Bishop of Rome.)Yvonne Rowse described amethod for reviving a chilledduckling.

After the Cleavage Panel drew toa close so did the con bar, thoughfortunately the hotel bar remainedopen. Less fortunately, in theabsence of real ale I drank lesswholesome beverages.

I went to bed at 2.30. Gallons ofreal ale had left me fresh as aslightly trodden daisy onSaturday and Sunday mornings,

but on Monday I woke to theworst hangover I’ve had since theGeneral Election of 1997. Istruggled through a bowl of fruitand a bucket of coffee forbreakfast.

A panel at 11, a closing ceremonyat one, a totally unexpected andmuch appreciated gift of a Galileothermometer, lots of goodbyes, ataxi to the station with TanyaBrown and then a train journeyhome, delayed at Newcastle bylightning hitting a signal.

I’ve left out lots of interestingconversations, but I enjoyed themall.

Well, I’ve just spent the weekend inGlasgow, and have come away withmixed feelings about our masqueradevenue. On the positive side, it’s a mod-ern, purpose-built auditorium, hasmore audience capacity than we willprobably use, has great acoustics andstate of the art lighting, and just looksfabulous.

On the negative side, the back-stage area is not very big. What wethought was a nice big loading bay isactually outside, under a very highroof, and completely open to the ele-ments. There’s not a lot of space back-stage, and most of the access involvesnarrow corridors and stairs. There arelots of dressing rooms, many with theirown bathrooms and televisions, butthey are mostly small, and not on thesame level as the stage. There are somethat are down a ramp, the rest are up ordown stairs and through the afore-mentioned narrow corridors.

There is, however, a reasonableamount of space in the wings on eitherside of the stage. Big props can bestored there, and any really hard-to-move entries can use that area. But ifyou think you’ll need to do this, let usknow ASAP. We will allocate space tothose who ask, and when it’s gone, it’sgone. Anyone using the wings willneed to be very quiet, as they are rightnext to the stage.

Fan PhotographyIf you’ve just read the preceding, thenyou can probably guess what I’mgoing to say next. We are currentlyevaluating a number of options, andhope to decide on one soon, so keepwatching the web site for announce-ments.

In summary, we have the follow-ing choices:• Try to squeeze fan photography in

backstage, which will limit severelythe numbers of photographers we’llbe able to allow;

• Do it before or after the masquer-ade, which will increase the risk ofoverrunning, which our budget can-not afford;

• Do it somewhere else, but all avail-able spaces are varying distancesaway, many of them up stairs;

• Do it next day, which means manyentries won’t participate due to thedifficulty of getting back into theirmakeup and costumes.

I am confident that we will find anacceptable solution, but please beaware that every possibility has itsadvantages and disadvantages.

Costume programmeand chaos costumeWe have a nice room allocated in theArmadillo for chaos costuming. Ifarranged auditorium-style, it wouldseat about 60 people. It has powerpoints and will have chairs and tables.It is an internal room, but the spaceoutside it is a glassed-in atrium, sothere is natural light nearby. It will beavailable Friday and Saturday.

A similar-sized room is next doorto it, and I have asked to have a coupleof slots a day reserved for costume-related programme. Now all we need isa costume programme! If you havesomething you’d be interested in

One programme item that isfixed is a Sunday mid-day show-and-tell for masquerade participants toshow off parts or all of their entries indetail and tell us how they did it! Aswe anticipate that this will be quitewell-attended, it’s going to be in a dif-ferent location from the room nearchaos costume, probably in a muchlarger programme room on the floorbelow.

Costume displayWe hope to set up a display of cos-tumes in the Concourse, Hall 2. If youhave something you’d be prepared tobring, please contact [email protected].

Also, I’m hoping we can setaside some space here to have some ofthe masquerade entries added to thedisplay after show-and-tell, see above.

Hall CostumeIt’d be great to see as many people aspossible in hall costume, they alwaysmake a convention look more interest-ing than just the usual loads of fans injeans and T-shirts. For those participat-ing in the masquerade, either enteringor working on it, hall costume has tocome second to the masquerade – untilit’s over! So I’m designating Sunday asHall Costume Day, and am hoping towear something myself that day.

We will have roving judgeshanding out Hall Costume Apprecia-tions to those they think particularlyexcellent or inventive. But whetheryou are spotted by one of them or not,it’s still fun to dress up now and then –after all, how many chances do we getin our usual lives to indulge ourselvesthis way?

The venue for the Video Programme(comprising SF, fantasy, etc., on TV

and on film) will be in three adjacentrooms of the Moat House hotel, theone next to the SECC. One room willbe used for Anime programming, andthe other two for non-Anime program-ming. Of these, one will be featuringUK SF, and the other rest-of-the-worldSF, including some non English lan-guage items from Europe. However,where possible, English sub-titled ver-sions will be used.

At least once each day, probablybetween 5-6pm, in one of the two non-Anime rooms, there will be a generalget-together of media SF fans (a get-ting-to-know-you session calledMEDIATALK). This will allow you tomeet other media SF fans to exploreinteresting aspects of media SF in thepast year, to discuss items of forthcom-ing interest, and of course to plug yourown favourite films or TV pro-grammes.

Light programming will be avail-able on the first and last days, frommid-afternoon on Thursday to approx-imately 2am Friday, and from approxi-mately 10:30am up to mid-afternoonon Monday. Full programming will beavailable on the three ‘core’ days (Fri-day, Saturday, Sunday), when pro-gramming will be from approximately10:30am to 2am the following day.There will be some programme breaks(e.g., during the Hugo Awards, theGoH speeches, etc., and for the MEDI-ATALK gatherings).

The Eurocon story starts in 1972 inTrieste, Italy, where the first of whatwas then a biennial convention was runas a stand-alone convention, very sim-ilar to, but very much smaller than, itsbig brother the Worldcon. Thischanged in the early ’80s, and theEurocon is now an annual event, usual-ly combined with the national conven-tion of the host country, and alternatingbetween eastern and western Europe –defined geographically – with a Euro-con having been selected as far northas Finland (2003), as far west as Ire-land (1997), as far south as San Mari-no (1989), and as far east as Ukraine(2006, www.eurocon.kiev.ua)

As with the Worldcon, eachEurocon is run by a group of local fansunder the auspices of a permanentorganisation. In this case that is ESFS(European Science Fiction Society),which has its own rules and statutes.For those of you interested in thesethings, go to www.esfs.info, where youwill find lots more information aboutESFS and its rules.

As with WSFS and the World-con, ESFS also has its own BusinessMeeting at each Eurocon, and pursuantto the ESFS statutes (see our web siteabove), notice is hereby given that vot-ing for the 2007 Eurocon and the vari-ous SF awards presented by ESFS willtake place at the ESFS General (Busi-ness) Meetings held at Interaction.

Please note the rules of the vari-ous awards, especially those regardingnominations for the ‘Hall of Fame’award and the ‘Encouragement’awards. Nominations and bid notifica-tion should be made via either theESFS web site or by emailing to [email protected] include details of any relevantweb sites or email addresses.

The race for the 2007 Eurocon isnow open, and at the time of writingthere are just two likely bids:

Octocon (www.octocon.com) isthe Irish national convention, whichhas been held in or near Dublin inOctober since 1990. It first hosted a

Eurocon in 1997, after winning the bidat the 1995 Eurocon Intersection.

Fantastikon (www.fantastikon.dk)is the Danish national convention,which was resurrected in 2004 whenSF in Denmark found a new burst oflife.

Voting for the Eurocon is limitedto the delegates of the European coun-tries represented at Interaction,although all fans are encouraged toattend and speak at the meeting. How-ever, I find myself in a slight dilemma:I’m Irish (and I act for Octocon over-seas regularly), but I’m also the FanGuest of Honour at Fantastikon 2005.It’s just lucky that as an ESFS officer Imust remain strictly neutral regardingthe 2007 bid.

The ESFS business meetings atInteraction will be held on Friday, Sat-urday, and Sunday afternoon, witheach session lasting between one andtwo hours. In addition, following theESFS Awards session, there will be apanel to discuss the future of SF fromboth national and European-wide per-spectives. The panel will consist of onemember from each European countrywith members attending the conven-tion. The panelists are selected collec-tively by the attending members fromeach country. The only proviso is thatthe selected panelist should be some-one with a long involvement in SF intheir country, but they need not neces-sarily be either of the two people dele-gated to represent that country at theESFS business meetings.

Interaction is also looking toexplore the variations in SF acrossEurope, and is looking for suggestionsfor panels on aspects of the genre spe-cific to a region or country. Examplesof this could be the influence ofBeowulf on Scandinavian SF, Celticinfluences on Irish SF, or a short histo-ry and examination of Czech anima-tion. Suggestions should be sent [email protected]

along with ideas about who should beon the panel and who might moder-ate/chair the panel.

We would also like to displayinformation on each country’s fandom,from local to national, with informa-tion about groups & clubs, SF maga-zines, and conventions. Space will belimited, but we think we will haveenough for one to two large boards percountry. We are happy to receive mate-rial from more than one source, andwill choose a representative selectionfor display. However, please bringcopies of any photos and other materi-als, and not one-off originals. Wewould also welcome items from pastEurocons, including programmebooks, photos, and video, for a displayon the history of the Eurocon. Materialfrom prior to 1983 would be especiallywelcome, as would items from 1985-1992, 1996, and 1998-2001. If you cansupply this material, please contact usin advance.

Finally, if you can speak reason-able English along with another lan-guage, and you are happy to put yourmultilingual talents to use at the con-vention, please let Registration knowupon your arrival. You may be able togive much needed help to fans fromoutside of the United Kingdom who donot speak English as well, and you willbe given a small national flag for yourID badge to identify which languagesyou speak in addition to English.

This is the last in a series of four articlesthat will introduce you to some of theInteraction crew. This is being done as aseries partly so as not to swamp a singleissue, and partly because we’re gettingmore people aboard now that we’re get-ting closer to our launch date. Each ofour contributors has written their ownentry, so the results should convey some-thing of their personalities as well astheir fannish history.

Lucy ZinkiewiczI hate writing about myself; it makesme feel like I’ve joined some sort of(un?)conventional dating agency.Heaven knows who they’d match meup with, though. I mean, if I said I’dbeen in science fiction fandom since Iwas 12, that’d frighten any sane personright away. But I have to admit thatfandom’s made me the person I am – asocial (and sociable) psychologist witha resilient liver, a brain full of strangeideas about the nature of humanity, andhalf my possessions in Australia andhalf in the UK. I’m currently living in(old) York, and working in the samedepartment as Mike ‘Sparks’ Rennie,so it was somewhat inevitable I’d besucked into the Interaction whirlpool,though I didn’t expect to be so suckedin… Still, Staff Services is a prettygood place to end up – after all, I get togo around looking after those workingon the con, and making sure they get achance to enjoy Interaction as much asthe more sensible fans. Chocolate,anyone?

BILL SUTTONBill Sutton got sucked into fandom in1980 by attending a UniCon in Wash-ington DC. He got sucked into Filk in1983 by passing a room with rathermarvellous music going on at InCon-Junction in Indianapolis, Indiana. Hegot sucked into convention running in1985 by Irv Koch, who sprung the idea

of a convention in Atlanta, Georgia, tobe called PhoenixCon (it’s a long story– buy him a bheer and he’ll explain it).He got sucked into Worldcon staffingin 1986 by running the Filk programfor ConFederation, the Atlanta World-con. He got sucked into an incrediblelove for British Ale in 1991 whileappearing as a (slightly drunken) guestat Treble, the third UK Filk Conven-tion. So you see, nothing that has hap-pened since is entirely his fault.

Bill’s wife Brenda was suckedinto marrying him at some point afterthe 1986 Worldcon, and is oftensucked into helping him with many ofhis activities. She, however, can sel-dom blame it on the bheer.

Bill and Brenda play musicaround the Atlanta area both as a duoand as part of Brenda’s band ThreeWeird Sisters. Bill owns and operatesBedlam House, an independent folkmusic record label with CDs fromartists from across the US and Europe.In his spare time, he supports telecom-munication platforms for customersaround the world (whom he often getssucked into visiting, which would bebad if it wasn’t for the chance to sam-ple the bheer).

TR SmithThis is not the TR you are lookingfor… that was the badge I had made upat Intersection in 1995, when I wasVice-Chair and Person Responsible forNorth America. Unfortunately, no onebelieved the badge.

I discovered science fiction con-ventions when my mother heard aradio ad for some sort of meeting inWashington, DC over Labor Dayweekend in 1974. The rest, as they say,is mystery. I mean, history. I foundmyself on the convention committeethe next August, running gophers forthe August Party. Since then, I’ve donepretty much every job possible exceptrun a dealers’ room and programming.I’ve been on staff for every Worldcon Icould get to and, of course, I’m work-

ing on Interaction in a rather minorway. Hah. If I’d known then whatVince had gotten me into… It’s a goodthing for him I joined the US ForeignService and was promptly posted toSiberia for two years, followed by twoyears in Oman, one and a half in Wash-ington, and now two in Kosovo. Oh,and by the way, support the GenevaConvention!

JIM MANNJim Mann has worked on many con-ventions over the years. He was the co-division head of Program at the 2004Worldcon in Philadelphia. He also ranor co-ran divisions at several otherworldcons including Noreascons 3 and4. In addition to working on cons, healso edits books for NESFA Press,including ones by Cordwainer Smith,William Tenn, and John W. Campbell.

SIMON BRADSHAWI got involved in fandom as a student,through the Imperial College ScienceFiction Society, attended my firstmajor convention in 1989 (Con-trivance, the first Jersey Eastercon)and have been a regular con-goer andprogramme participant ever since.Eventually I graduated – or should thatbe descended to? – con-running, andI’ve co-chaired Seccon and SecconD,two small general-interest science fic-tion conventions, and ConteXXt, the2002 Unicon. I’m not new to Worldconscience programmes, having helpedrun the one at Intersection in 1995. Aglutton for punishment, I’m also cur-rently Chair of the Science FictionFoundation and deputy chair of Con-cussion, the 2006 Eastercon. In RealLife, I’m an electronics engineer withan MSc in Satellite Communications,but am now branching out a bit bystudying law part-time. I actually man-age to squeeze in reading a book ortwo now and again.

There’s a feel about a Worldcon that Idon’t think anyone mentions. I don’tknow whether this is becauseI/we/they just accept it or becausementioning it might break the spell.The closest I can come to it is clan, ortribe, although family is closer in feel.The description “Don’t think of it as4,000 strangers but as friends you haveyet to meet” is truth, not hyperbole. Tofully appreciate a Worldcon, you haveto experience it. A first-time Worldconattendee at ConJosé commented to me,“I thought beforehand that this would

be disappointing. I mean, come on,NOTHING can live up to my expecta-

tions. I was wrong. I was never that

wrong before.”

A Worldcon is also about volun-

teers. In a way, that is the essence of it.

The organising committee has spent

upwards of three years preparing (for

some, the dream has taken a decade).

Then, they spend long days (and some

longer nights) making it possible. They

are supported by a worldwide network

of staff with the same dream who vol-

unteer to help out either generally or in

a specific area. Some have expertise

that they can offer; others supply the

legs and backs needed for the myriad

behind-the-scenes activities necessary

to make the con a success. Without

these people, the unsung volunteers, a

con cannot function.The corollary to this is that with-

out people showing a willingness to

help out, the experience is diminished

for us all. I’m not saying everyoneshould formally volunteer, but it wouldmake light of the most difficult of

tasks! If ever there is something that

needs doing and you can help, why notvolunteer? There are degrees of helpthat can be given, from answering

questions like “Where’s the nearestrestroom?” on up.

A ConJose Samaritan’s Tale

On the Wednesday afternoon of theconvention, I went to the ConventionCentre to collect the convention bookand program guides. I ended up justpottering and talking to people, lend-ing a hand to move tables and getting afeel of the layout. At around six, a manapparently in his late sixties, towing alarge suitcase, asked me whether Icould direct him to the Hyatt. I startedto explain, then stopped and said I’dtake him there. (I just realised the time

and the Hyatt was my hotel!)

When I lifted his suitcase to

carry it down the stairs to the entrance,

I could see why it was on casters! At

the bottom I attempted to tow the thing

but it persisted in savaging my ankles.

So, reluctantly, because I could see he

was tired, I returned control of The

Luggage to its master!

At the Hyatt “Mr K” ran into

problems. They had no record of him

nor of the friend who had actually

booked the room, Mr K no longer had

his confirmation as he’d lost it on the

flight from Germany. The reception

desk people were kind and helpful and

rang round the other main convention

hotels, but none of them had heard of

him or his friend.

After I temporarily checked his

bag with Hyatt reception, we toddledover to the Fairmont and performed adouble check at their reception, still no

joy. Thence upstairs to Con Ops. where

I laid out the whole problem to RobbieBourget. She set about eliciting thesame information I had, sent someone

else down to Reception to perform a

separate check, and checked via aradio link with the guy with the conname/location spreadsheet. A short

prayer later, the information cameback: it was the Ramada Limited, one

of the late additions to the con list. I volunteered to deliver Mr K to

the Ramada ASAP after first using thepublic phones to check whether they

were still expecting him. (Whichreminds me – I still owe Robbie the$0.50 for the phone call. When I said Iwasn’t sure whether I had the correctchange that US phones required, shehanded me two quarters from herpocket and said “Here, these are guar-anteed”.) I then settled him into a cab,back to the Hyatt to collect The Lug-gage which I, well tossed isn’t accuratefor something that heavy, into the boot(US: trunk) of the cab, then on to theRamada where I went with him toreception. (I carried The Luggage, as I

wasn’t giving it another chance at my

ankles!)

I returned in the cab to the Hyatt.

While I paid the driver, I made some

light remark about it being my Samar-

itan act for the day. He looked blank,

and said “Samaritan? I know the

Samaritans Hospital, is it the same?”

Rather than attempt an explanation, I

just told him it was similar, and left it

at that. By this time it was well past

nine and by now I was very hungry and

tired (jetlag was catching up with me!),

so I ate and retired to bed.

The following morning, I

dropped in at Con Ops to let them

know that Mr K had reached his hotel

safely. Business was already picking

up, with lots of people moving around,

so I got out of their way to let them get

on with it, daft, I know. They werebusy, and it looked like getting busierso I didn’t offer to help. I suppose

that’s the unanswered question here.

Why didn’t I volunteer and put someformal time in as a gopher? They cer-tainly were busy enough.

In truth, I’m not really sure. Oh

my aching head! I suppose it could besuggested that I’ve overcompensatedfor this when I, almost on the spur of

the moment, decided to go to the firstConStruction weekend and wound up

on the staff... (I’m still not sure howthat happened; I mean the sequence ofevents is simple to follow, but why I

agreed?)

‘The Concourse’ is the name for theFixed Exhibits area at Interaction. Itwill be located in Hall 2 of the SECC,adjacent to Registration in Hall 1. Hall2 is at the eastern end of the SECC,near to the Moat House and convenientfor Glasgow city centre, the Clyde, andthe underground station.

The Concourse is the heart of theconvention and you’ll probably visit itseveral times a day. It’s the place tomeet friends, stop to talk, or have a cupof coffee and something to eat betweenconvention items. It’s also whereyou’ll collapse when you retreatfrom the Dealers’ Room to saveyour wallet or purse. You’ll be ableto visit our Sales to Members area,the Internet lounge, and lots ofinformation desks, including theNewsletter office. You can alsobrowse the fan tables and sign upfor future Worldcons. It’s whereyou will find the Gopher Hole if youwant to volunteer to help. It embodiesthe theme of the convention. Of course,you will also find exhibits there.

Planning the ConcourseWith all these exhibits and activities,even though there will be some quietseating areas, the Concourse itself willnot be a quiet place! It requires somecareful planning to ensure that every-thing fits into Hall 2.

This planning process is nowgoing on in detail. The answers tomany questions are being worked on.What should be in the Concourse?What will be the best layout of theactivity areas? Which exhibits/activi-ties need electricity? What type ofseating would fans like? Which eventswill attract queues (and where canthose queues run without blockingother events)? What should be the ratioof seating in the catering area to otherseating types? How will the Hall bedecorated? How are we going to geteverything there? What will it all cost?There is a lot to be done before August,and additional volunteers to help withthe pre-convention organisation wouldbe greatly appreciated.

The actual character of the Con-course depends on how fans use thespace. True, there will already be atheme and pre-planned activities, but itwill take fans to give life to the area.As usual, they’ll rearrange the furni-ture to their own liking. It is only thenthat we will know if we have guessedcorrectly what the fans wanted.

Fans in the ConcourseDuring the day, there will be a cateringarea supplying both food and drink.You will have a chance to find a seatand read that book you have justbought. You can also use the Con-course as a meeting point. In theevening, activities in the SECC willwind down and the emphasis will shiftfrom the Concourse towards the centreof Glasgow to the local restaurants andthe party hotel.

Perhaps this will be the first timethat you’ve attended a Worldcon. Visit-ing the Concourse is a good way tostart your Worldcon experience. Youcan find out about the history of theWorldcon and what a Hugo Award is.If you need information about Interac-tion and/or Glasgow, it’s also the placeto come. You’ll find information desksfor hotel accommodation, Glasgow,and member services in the Concourse.For a newcomer, volunteering to help

at the convention is a good way tomeet new people, make friends, and tofind out what it takes to make a con-vention run. You can sign up at the vol-unteers’ desk.

For the more seasoned fan, whohas survived the Worldcon campaignfrom previous years, you already knowthat the Concourse is the place toretreat to between attacks on the Deal-ers’ Room and various programmeitems. However, this year the seasonedfan will notice a difference to previous

Worldcons! There will be no siteselection ballot because the leadtime has changed from three totwo years. If you want to vote fora future Worldcon, your earliestchance will be in Los Angeles in2006.

Many events and activitieshave the same titles in the Con-

course area at most Worldcons.However, the fans helping to

organise the Worldcon give a localinterpretation of those exhibits andactivities. For example, the Hugoexhibit in Glasgow will not be thesame as those of Boston, Toronto, SanJosé, Philadelphia, and Chicago beforeit, or at Los Angeles and Yokohama,which will follow Glasgow. The differ-ent histories, experiences, and avail-able resources of local fans ensure thatthe exhibits and activities sharing acommon name will be different. So,even if you’ve seen or done somethingbefore, try it again. Come and see whatthe locals have done to it; be a touristand “feel the culture”. The locals arefriendly and hope that all visitingaliens will enjoy their experience ofthe local culture.

Come and visit!Well, that’s what the Concourse isabout. It’s a place to meet and shareexperiences. It’s the base from whichto explore Glasgow and find out whichlocal pubs and restaurants to visit. It isthe base from which to explore Interac-tion. So please come and visit the Con-course and help to make it live.

As you all know this is the first World-con to be held in the UK for ten years.I don’t remember much about Intersec-tion myself because I spent most of itworking, but the bits I did see weresensational. The most fun I have to saywas the bouncy castle, the Masqueradeand the parties. This is the fourthWorldcon that I will have been to, eachcompletely different and all of themgood. I am looking forward to Interac-tion even if I have managed to findmyself running another event. Plan-ning the Art Show can’t really give mea picture of what it will look like in the

end. I know it will be something to

look forward to and not to miss. I look

forward to seeing you all there.

ACCESSThe Art Show will be located on the

ground floor in Hall 3, which has easy

access for everyone. We will be next to

the Dealers’ Room so anyone can

come from the Art Show and browse

the Dealers’ Room all in one go. The

ARTISTSThe Art Show will feature artists and

artwork from around the globe. It willbe particularly interesting to see many

artists from all over Europe and theUK whom you would not normally see

if you go to a US Worldcon. I will alsohave some new people who have never

been to a science fiction conventionbefore and who are travelling specially

to exhibit their work with us. I am alsohoping to get children’s illustratorsinvolved, which will be interesting.

CHANGESNow I can see you all thinking what

am I going to do that will make thingsso different. Don’t worry because theyare all good changes that make life eas-ier for everyone. We are going to becombining many different aspects ofrunning the Art Show, combining thebest elements from US Worldcons andUK conventions. The main change thatwill affect European fans is the biddingsystem. We currently expect to have athree-bid system. This means once apiece of artwork reaches three bids itwill go into auction.

Any artwork that has one or two

bids will go the last person who bid on

that artwork. It won’t go to auction soyou will need to collect it from the ArtShow. If you want to bid for artwork

you will have to register at the Art

Show. If you don’t register with the ArtShow you will not be able to bid in theArt Auction or on artwork in the Art

Show.

We will be collecting paymentfor artwork on Monday 8 Augustbetween 10am and 2pm. If you are

leaving the convention on Sundayevening or Monday morning you can

collect the artwork you have bought onSunday 7 August between 5pm and6pm. However, you will need to con-

tact me before the Art Auction so I canmake lists of people leaving early and

have your artwork ready first.

The other difference will be thePrint Shop. You will be able to buyprints from the Print Shop in the ArtShow throughout the convention. Theydon’t need to be bid on. Copies ofthese prints will be hung behind andalong the walls near the Print Shop.

CHESLEY AWARDSI am especially pleased that the World-con will be hosting the ChesleyAwards, which are given annually bythe Association of Science Fiction andFantasy Artists (ASFA). The Awards

cover over a dozen categories,

including Best Cover Illustration, Best

Interior Illustration, and Best Three-

Dimensional Art. You can read more

about them on the ASFA web site atwww.asfa-art.org/chesley.html.

This will be the first time that the

Chesleys have ever been presented

outside of North America. Having the

Chesleys at Interaction is not only an

honour for the convention but will

encourage more US artists to attend

and participate in the Art Show. The

Ale bar). The bad news is that the lim-ited residential room space in the hotelis already depleted. We plan to have a

Filk Office and Check Room, where

you can check your instrument so thatyou won’t need to carry it back and

forth to the remote hotels. Volunteersare lovingly requested to help staff the

office during open hours.Daytime programming will con-

sist of a few selected panels and work-shops as well as three hours worth of

concerts daily. We’re still working outthe details, but we hope to repeat the

success of Torcon’s ‘Chapter andVerse’ panel involving authors and thefilkers who filk them. There will also

be a Three Weird Sisters ‘familyreunion’ that you won’t want to miss.

London (1957, 1965) ... Heidelberg(1970) ... Brighton (1979, 1987) ... TheHague (1990) ... Glasgow (1995).Seven previous European conventionsout of 62 Worldcons prior to Interac-tion. Not much more than 10%, per-haps, but a very important part ofWorldcon history – and of Europeanfannish history too. The six BritishWorldcons in particular are charac-terised by patterns that almost seemfated – one for each decade from the1950s; two in each location, with acontinental Worldcon in between.Together, they pace out the evolutionof modern British and European sci-ence fiction, and science fiction fan-dom.

We have long intended to honourthis history in a number of ways. Theseinclude the retrospectives we havepublished on the 1979, 1987, and 1995events in Progress Reports 1, 2 and 4,and the UK Worldcon history web sitethat we have established at www.worldcon.org.uk. We will also be high-

lighting the European Worldcons aspart of the Worldcon history exhibitthat will form part of our Concoursearea.

And it is through gathering mate-rial for these activities that we haveuncovered some wonderful records ofthe earliest European Worldcons.

Firstly, we have been reminded of Nor-man Shorrock’s collection of profes-sional photographs from Loncon I, the1957 Worldcon. The best part of 100images in total, these are of far betterquality than the usual fan photographstaken at conventions of the time. Manyof the images can be found on BillBurns’ efanzines.com web site – thespecific link is http://efanzines.com/1957WorldCon. We hope to display aselection of the original photographs atInteraction itself, as part of the historyexhibit.

We have also been delighted touncover something even more unex-pected – a complete audio record of the

programme from Loncon II, the 1965Worldcon. This is a significant piece oforal history – enough to fill 11 CDs!This truly unique archive was made byGerman fan Waldemar Kumming forthe Science Fiction Club Deutschland(SFCD) and has been essentiallyunknown to the wider world for 40years. We are currently making

1. Make sure you have a signed, validpassport and visas, if required. Ingeneral, your passport must be validfor at least 6 months beyond yourintended stay, in accordance withinternational treaties.

If you don’t have a passport,apply for one now. Summer is peaktravel period and passport officesaround the world are inundated withrequests for new passports. No mat-ter which country you are a citizenof, you should allow at least twomonths for processing. Some coun-tries require longer, some requireless, but rather than risk not gettingit in time, start the process now.Whatever you do, don’t wait untilafter the beginning of June to dothis.

Also, before you go, fill in theemergency information page ofyour passport!

2. Read the Consular InformationSheets (and Public Announcementsor Travel Warnings, if applicable)for the countries you plan to visit. Ifyour country does not provide thisinformation, the US Department ofState has its own versions availableon the web at www.travel.state.gov.

3. Familiarize yourself with local lawsand customs of the countries towhich you are travelling. Remem-

ber, your country’s laws do not fol-low you! While in a foreign country,you are subject to its laws.

4. Make 2 copies of your passportidentification page (the one withyour picture and biographical dataon it). This will facilitate replace-ment if your passport is lost orstolen. Leave one copy at homewith friends or relatives. Carry theother with you in a separate placefrom your passport. Do NOT carry itwith your passport.

5. Leave a copy of your itinerary withfamily or friends at home so thatyou can be contacted in case of anemergency.

6. Do not leave your luggage unat-tended in public areas. Do notaccept packages from strangers.

7. If you are a US citizen, prior to yourdeparture, you should register withthe nearest US embassy or con-sulate through the State Depart-ment’s travel registration web sitehttps://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs.Registration will make your pres-ence and whereabouts known incase it is necessary to contact you inan emergency. In accordance withthe Privacy Act, information onyour welfare and whereabouts maynot be released without your

express authorization. Remember toleave a detailed itinerary and thenumbers or copies of your passportor other citizenship documents witha friend or relative in the UnitedStates.

8. To avoid being a target of crime, trynot to wear conspicuous clothingand expensive jewelry and do notcarry excessive amounts of moneyor unnecessary credit cards. Photo-copy the fronts and backs of anycards you do carry; leave one copyat home with your itinerary andkeep the other copy with you, sepa-rate from your cards. Should yourcards be stolen, you will have all thenumbers you need at hand to makesure you are protected from unau-thorized charges.

9. In order to avoid violating locallaws, deal only with authorizedagents when you exchange moneyor purchase art or antiques.

10. If you get into trouble, contact thenearest embassy for your country. Ifyou are a citizen of the EU and yourcountry does not have an embassy,contact the nearest EU memberembassy and request guidance fromthem. Many of them will providesome level of assistance in an emer-gency.

The most important element of anyWorldcon history, though, is of course

the fans, and the final part of our planis focussed on the people who’ve madethose Worldcons what they were.

As some of you will know, FrankSmith has in the past hosted a party forthose people who have attended all theprevious UK Worldcons. Unfortunate-ly Frank’s health means that he won’tbe with us in Glasgow this year, andthe number of eligible members is alsomuch smaller than it used to be – notsurprising as we’re rapidly approach-ing the 50th anniversary of Loncon I.

We’ve therefore decided to rein-vent this party as an official conven-tion event, to be held on Thursdayevening in the Hilton hotel. Because

we are very much a European event,rather than just a UK one, we’d like toopen it also to anyone who has been toat least four of the previous sevenEuropean Worldcons.

We’re also pleased to announcethat Peter Weston, chair of the 1979Brighton Worldcon, will be the partyhost. If you’re in the group of peoplewho qualify to attend, please look outfor details in the Convention Guidewhen you arrive at the convention. Wehope to see many of you there – to buyyou a drink, and to share memories ofthose magnificent seven!

We are continuing to explore theoptions for member Internet access atInteraction. This article is intended togive you an idea of what is available inGlasgow and at the convention, alongwith details of specific packages avail-able in the larger hotels.

For both technical and cost rea-sons, we do not expect to be able toprovide a general public service wire-less within the SECC. Members want-ing access will therefore need to takeadvantage of the packages that areavailable through many of the facili-ties. The specifics of these vary fromhotel to hotel, although in general,some level of service is available inmost of the major locations and the sit-uation is evolving all the time.

We hope, subject to the sameconstraints, to be able to offer someform of Internet lounge. However, wewill not know about this until muchcloser to the convention. In addition,the SECC plans to have a WiFi net-work set up in that facility beforeAugust, although there are no technicaldetails available yet. They do notexpect it to be free.

As more information becomesavailable, we will post it on our website. Infotel is also putting informationabout Internet access in the hotels onthe web pages describing the hotels,and they will update those as moreinformation becomes available. TheInfotel URL is www.infotel.co.uk/worldcon/index.aspx.

For those used to US servicesnote that UK provision is more frag-mented and more expensive. Thismeans, for instance, that hotels mayhave both wired and wireless access –but these are often from separateproviders and hence not interchange-able. Wireless services are also oftenrestricted to specific areas such as pub-lic spaces, rather than being availablein the bedrooms. There may be onlywireless services at some sites. Costsfor broadband vary but typically fall inthe range of £15-£18 per day whereavailable. Passes purchased for a longerperiod may offer significant discounts.

There are also WiFi sites in otherplaces throughout the city, althoughnone near the SECC. Paid access isavailable at Starbucks, Tinderbox, etc.,and at least one site, Morton’s onByres Rd, has free access.

The Moat House has WiFi accessthroughout the meeting space and thebedrooms, provided by Eurospot. Theyalso have connections in the room thatturn the WiFi into wired access. Pricesfor a day (24 hours from first sign-on)are £17; there are lower prices forshorter times. If you’re staying formore than 3 days, then their £46/weekplan is a better buy. It is unclear if thesame purchase can be used for bothWiFi and wired access.

The City Inn has WiFi in the bed-rooms and in the meeting space, whereit’s complimentary. There is no wiredaccess.

The Campanile has no broad-band access.

The Hilton has WiFi throughout,provided by BT. There is also wiredaccess in the bedrooms for £15/day(noon-noon).

The Marriott has no broadband inthe bedrooms. There is WiFi in thelobby at £15/day.

The Radisson SAS has WiFithroughout the hotel, although it isexpensive, since there’s only a short-term rate (£3/half hour). There is wiredbroadband in all the bedrooms for £15/day (24 hours from first sign-on).
