The 47th Carolina Angus Futurity is Dedicated to Tokeena Angus

Neil and Gwen met when she came to work as the hog farm manager for Tokeena Farms after graduating from Clemson with a degree in ani-mal science in 1978. Times were good, and the farm economy was booming. By the time Neil and Gwen married in 1981, Tokeena Farms was struggling with the same economic conditions that gripped the nation- high inflation, 18% interest rates and a collapsing farm economy. The last production sale of the Tokeena Farms partnership was held in September of 1983, with their first born, Meghan, just 7 days old sitting under the serving table while her mom served bar-b-q to cattle buyers and Neil worked the sale ring. In 1980, Neil remained on the farm and built 2 poultry houses while Gwen started her teaching career at Oakway Middle School. In 1988, with only 30 head of registered brood cows remaining in the herd, Neil and Gwen accepted the challenge of managing and rebuilding the Angus herd, founding Tokeena Angus. Choosing their top 2 cows, Tokeenas Louise 993 and Tokeenas Daydream 803, and utilizing A.I. and embryo transfer, they slowly built their herd numbers back to the point they could once again host an annual sale. Daniel was born in 1985 and both he and Meghan showed cattle across the state and nation from the early 90’s until 2003. In 1994, Neil and Gwen partnered with John Spitzer, a Clemson Animal Science professor and owner of Spitzer Ranch to do on-farm performance test and production sale. After several successful joint sales, Tokeena Angus held its first solo sale consisting of just 25 bulls in 2001. Over the years, Neil has focused on the Traveler, Bando, and Rito lines, but in 2005, Neil and Gwen traveled to Montana and brought home two new bulls, Diamond Payweight 4157 and Diamond Max 973P from the Stevenson Basin and Diamond Dot sale, making Tokeena Angus the Southeast home of the Payweight bloodlines.

Currently, Tokeena Angus has 190 brood cows and their sale includes performance tested bulls, registered pairs, heifers and com-mercial Angus sired females from both Tokeena and their customers. Each year, they A.I. approximately 50 cows and heifers, selecting new and improved genetics and outstanding bloodlines to enhance the existing herd. In January, Tokeena Angus held the 24th annual Performance Tested Bull and Heifer Sale and are making plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary in 2019.

Neil has always looked for ways to improve not only the cattle of Tokeena Angus but the farming practices in which he used on the land left to him by his father and mother, W.H. and Addie. Because of these conservation efforts, Neil was named SC District Young Farmer of the Year in 1999. In addition to her family responsibilities, Gwen could be found giving to her true passion, teaching agriculture to her students. In 2005, Gwen began the West-Oak FFA show team where she took her students and the West-Oak FFA Chapter to new heights and was awarded the 3-star Gold Emblem Chapter in 2010. Along with her daughter Meghan, who was the agriculture teacher at Aiken High School, this is the first time in SC FFA history a mother/daughter pair earned a top 10 FFA Chapter ranking in South Carolina. Since retirement in 2011, Gwen can be found actively involved in her county by serving on Oconee’s

Planning Commission, Foothills Heritage Fair Board, Chamber of Commerce Executive Board and giving back in the name of agriculture and her family heritage wherever she can. When Neil is not tending to the farm responsibilities, he can be found spending time with Meghan, Jared, Daniel and Paige. The light of their life is being Naana and Pops to their two grandsons, Watson (2 yo) and Gus (1 yo) who are learning the joys and discomforts of agriculture life at a very early age. Passing down their legacy to the next generation of Angus cattle farmers, Neil and Gwen have instilled not only commitment and integrity to their children, but also the value of family and the legacy of W.H. and Addie McPhail for many generations to come.
