MOVEMBER - is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer and other male cancers, and associated charities.

Freshman year can be very confusing if you…

Well, it is always confusing. So here are some tips which will help you know your way around the MIU. Remem-ber them well and have fun exploring the MIU world!

Visit SSC if you need help with your homeworks and

assignments.

The Student Success Center tutors and Kathy Porowski will be happy to help you with your homework and answer your questions. They will als o treat you with a nice coffee and comfortable environment.

Do not miss the Study Skills workshop by

Kathy Porowski.

Kathy from the SSC runs a workshop about Study Skills, which are mandatory for all freshmen. I personally had a painful experience of miss-ing most of those workshops and getting a “not very good” grade on the Basic English class. Please do not repeat my mistakes, and come to the workshops on time. You can find the schedule in SSC.

Do not fail the English Qualification exam.

Failing a class is not good, but failing the qualification exam is a disaster. Not only you will have to take the Basic Eng-lish and Conversation classes again, but you will have a lim-ited credit for the next semes-ter. In other words, you will not be able to take all the other classes you want to. The qualification exam is held once each semester, and the materials are usually prepared from your Basic English class-es. Passing it should not be difficult as long as you know its importance.

It is better to take TEPS when you

are a sophomore.

Generally, MIU classes con-centrate on improving your English during the Freshman and Sophomore years, while the Seniors and Juniors take many social and philosophical classes. In other words, you will simply not have time for English after the sophomore year. This is why the TEPS during sophomore year is the best option. Also, TEPS is free for sophomores!

If you like travelling.

MIU offers many exchange program and vision trip op-portunities to the students. If you love travelling keep your eye on these events. Also, pay attention to your grades, be-cause most of the programs have a required minimal GPA limit.

If you like social events.

If you enjoy participating in social events, which include sports competitions, talent shows, interesting lectures, pay attention to the notice boards. Our school holds many events, but the students mostly hear about them from others or through the so-cial media resources. Always check the notice boards at least once a week. It will not take more than 5 minutes.

Be in the “zone”.

Use MIU zone. Most of the professors upload the files that they use in their classes, homeworks and extra materi-als on the zone. Moodle is the new and improved version of the zone, which is still under development.

MIU’s CyberSport competition was held on November 1st.

We included three different games, league of Legends, Counter Strike, and Dota. The point of these com-petition was to give the students some time to get together and have fun. CyberSport is a growing sport all over the world. By encouraging students to spend their Saturday in a fun way, we can give them a chance to take a break from their busy lives of university life. After intense 8 hours of gaming, we were able to crown the winners of each game. The winner of was team that had two Koreans and two Mongolians.

Student Union Events

the first prize goes to

This semester’s SU event is mostly finished. The main event Christmas party is left. So let’s flashback one more time what has happened during this year.

Student Union Events

On September 13th the first event, which was “Freshman

Welcoming Party”, was held in the main hall successfully. The attend-ances of the freshmen were pretty well. All the freshmen were divided into teams and competed against each other by fun games. I hope this event has helped the freshman to bond with each other and get to know each other.

All the freshmen were divided into teams and com-

peted against each other by fun

games.

On the third Saturday of Novem-ber the Volleyball competition

was held at Mon-Altis University. There were 9 men team and 6 wom-en teams. Every game was unique in their own way. The competition was held from 10 am to 10 pm for 12 hours. The Champion of the man’s was Afghan team, and they are champions two years in a row. ET 3 got Silver. Mix (IT) won the Bronze medal. For the women, again TG got to be the Champion. IT received Sil-ver and the IM and HM Sophomore mix won Bronze.

Day after Speech Competition, the Basketball competition was

held at the Catholic church’s gym that is located right next to MIU. The competition was fair without any conflict. The winner of the Men’s basketball winner is ET 4. Following the ET4, ET3 won Silver. Mixtape (Combination of many department sophomores) won Bronze. For the women’s, TG (combination of IM and EE freshman) received Gold. IT 4 got Silver and IM 3 won Bronze.

The next event was Speech Com-petition that was also hosted in

Main Hall on October 10th. There was 11 given topics and the partic-ipants got to choose the topic they wanted to choose among the 11 topics. There were 10 contestants in total. All of them gave an amaz-ing speech and voiced their opin-ions. However this is a competition so there must be a winner, and the winner is Jawad (IM 3). His speech on how grades are important might gave motivation to the audience to study. The second place went to Javh-lan (IM 3). She touched the judges with her topic on how we shouldn’t do research on animals. The third place went to Amartuvshin (IM 1). He gave his speech about Success like the legendary Martin Luther King. Also the other contestants we brave courageous.

Are you ready for the finals? It seems like the midterms had ended a week ago, but it’s already time for the finals! Are you ready for them?

Well, if you are not, we have collected advises from the professors of each department with the key points, to give you directions and to encourage you to start as soon as possible.

“I am not a big fan of surprises. I give my final exam questions or similar questions as homework or in class. Most of the times, the questions are quite complicated, but if you do your homework, and pay attention in class, you will get at least 28 out of 30 on the finals. ”

– Gordon Holmes (IM department)

DOHOMEWORK

PAY

ATTENTION IN CLASS

“Since most of the FD finals are projects, read the guidelines thor-oughly and make sure you have understood the main points: what is the purpose of the final project; how can you apply your knowledge to the final project; and why or why not can you execute it well. While doing the project, go back to the course competencies and check whether you are ready to move on to the next step of the project. Fi-nally, you should be able to explain how far you have come from the first day of the class.”

- Ashley Kim (FD department)

READ THE GUIDELINES

WHILE DOING PROJECTS

“Practice, and practice again. Most of the IM classes, especially the ones that I am teaching, require a lot of practice, if you only memorize the theories, you will not be able to do well on the finals”

– Sujin You (IM department)

PRACTICE AND

PRACTICE

AGAIN

“Don’t wait to begin studying. Start reviewing course material at least one week before your Final Exam. Get plenty of sleep during the Final Exam week! You will not do well on your exams if your body and brain are tired. It is much better to study for a couple of hours and get 6 or more hours of sleep the night before an exam than to stay up all night studying.”

- Joshua Detherage (EE department)

DON’T WAIT TO STUDY

SLEEP WELL

“Prepare flashcards for the finals where you need to memorize many terms and vocabularies. Flashcards are useful for every class which you will be taking in the future, so turn them into your habit”

– Carrie Wallestad (ET department)

PREPAREFLASHCARDS

“Study in Groups. Certainly there are many cases where studying in groups can be beneficial, since many minds working together can help explain concepts better that you perhaps did not understand. However, a study group only works well if you are concentrated. If not, conversations, jokes, and distrac-tions can take control of the study. “

- Taesu Park (HM department)

STUDY IN GROUPS

“First of all, do not sleep in the class. Second, you cannot bring textbooks to the finals, but you can bring a paper with all the equations and constants written on it, because I understand that it is difficult to memorize them all. Third, get your own calculator, because we all need it on the exam, but no one has it. ”

– Marosi Bela (BT department)

DO NOT SLEEP

IN CLASS

GET OWN CALCULATOR

“The section of the midterm where the students had lost most points was the essay questions. Each ques-tion consists of 2 parts: explaining the theory and making your argu-ment. If you fail to answer the first part, you will not be able to answer the second. In order to answer them well on the finals, you need to understand the key points of each theory instead of memorizing.”

- Young-Oh Jung (GE department)

STUDY ESSAY QUESTIONS

UNDERSTANDKEY POINTS

“My students do not read the textbooks and it is a big problem. It is very important to read your textbooks and take notes during the class. IT classes require a lot of memorizing, but it is more impor-tant to understand the concept first. Even for the programming students, if you understand the concept, memorizing is not a problem. ”

- Mu-Han Bae (IT department)

READ TEXTBOOKS

UNDERSTANDTHE CONCEPT

“The best way to prepare for the finals is to try to remember the key words. Many students think they know the answers to the questions during the review, but on the actual exam, their answer if different from the correct one. So if you have even the slightest doubt, make sure to come and ask me.”

- Charles Lee (GE department)

REMEMBER KEY WORDS

Follow their advices and do not hesitate to visit

them if you have any questions. Good luck

on the finals and have a nice winter holiday!

TemperamentsEvery people have one of a kind, unique personality of their own, yet many have a lots of char-acteristics in common that can be grouped together. In Middle Ages, physicians divide temper-aments of personalities into 4 primary categories; phlegmatic, choleric, sanguine, melancholy. Knowing what your temperament is vital for developing further your characters to fit into your future career. You will then know where in your character needs fixing and improving.

The Phlegmatic people are an introverted, calm, not so emo-

tional, easygoing, hardly-get-up-set people. They are both slow and indirect when responding to others. Their stoic expression often hides their true feelings. They are also slow to warm-up but will be accommodating in the process. The Phlegmatic people are by far the easiest person with which to get along yet seldom exert themselves with others and have the sincere in-terest on having a few good friends. They live a life of quiet routine, free of the normal anxieties and stresses of the other temperaments. The Phlegmatic people will avoid get-ting too involved with people and life in general and do not have the tendency of constant change. They are practical, concrete and tradi-tional thinkers. They are persistent and consistent at whatever they undertake.

The Choleric is an extroverted, hot-tempered, quick thinking,

active, practical, strong-willed and easily bored person. They are self-confident, self-sufficient and very independent minded with great decisiveness along with direct and firm communication with others. The Choleric is a visionary and seems to never run out of ideas, plans and goals, which are usually very practical. Their activity almost always has a purpose because they are by nature result-oriented. They are slow to build relationships because results tend to be more important than people. They do not easily empathize with the feelings of others or show compassion. The Choleric thinks big and seeks posi-tions of authority.

The Sanguine is an extroverted, fun-loving, activity-prone,

impulsive, entertaining, persua-sive, easily amused and optimistic person. They have friendly, cheerful voice along with their up-to-date fashion style. The Sanguine people are receptive and open to others and build relationships quickly. It is not unusual to feel as if you have known the Sanguine person for years after only a few min-utes. The Sanguine people are so people-oriented that they easily forget about time and are often late arriving at their destination. The Sanguine can change their focus or interest in an instant. The Sanguine people are competitive and tend to be disorganized. Unless very disciplined, the Sanguine will have difficulty controlling their emotions. They usually like sports of any kind because of the activity and involvement with other people. The Sanguine fears rejection or not making a favorable impression and not viewed as a successful.

The Melancholy is an introvert-ed, logical, analytical, factual,

private, lets-do-it-right person. Skepticism and creativity are their nature. The Melancholies have indirect communications and tend to be reserved and suspicious until sure of your intentions. They are self-sacrificing, gifted and they tend to be a perfectionist. The Melan-cholies are timid and very sensitive to what others think about their work. They fears of taking a risk, making a wrong decision and being viewed as incompetent. However, the Melancholy is very well organ-ized and determined to make the right and best decision. The Melan-choly needs reassurance, feedback and reasons why they should do something. Melancholies tend to get bored with something once they get it figured out.

Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in the US on the fourth Thursday of November. The history of this festival dates back to ancient times, when the first settlers in the late 1620 came from England to America. Fleeing religious per-secution, a group of Englishmen pilgrims set off on a dangerous journey, hoping to find in the New World long-awaited freedom. The first year at the new location was very harsh. The settlers had to endure hunger, cold, misery and disease. After a harsh winter, after they died, about half of immigrants, they are using the neighbor Indians to help them grow corn and other crops that are adapted to local con-ditions, to distinguish edible from poisonous plants, there is a spring with drinking water, hunting trails and fishing spots. In the autumn of 1621 the colonists gathered a good crop for which they have decided to thank the Lord, a festive treat. Thus was celebrated the first ever Thanksgiving.

For a long time was an unofficial holiday. However, in 1789 the first US President George Washington proclaimed Thanksgiving a na-tional event, and at the request of Congress set a date - November 26, Thursday. Subsequently, the date of the holiday continually chang-ing, only one remains unaffected - respectful and attentive attitude of Americans to date, closely related to their faith and history.

The tradition of celebrating

The main tradition of Thanks-giving Day is a holiday dinner,

which brings together several gen-erations of one family in a house of elders. Before Him, many Ameri-cans with family attend a service in the church. Often this festival is the only event of the year, which allows gathering together with all the rel-atives. During the festive meal each gives thanks for all the good that has happened in his life this year.

The second tradition is the holiday table - the day Americans eat the same thing, which their ancestors ate in 1621 on the first dinner in honor of Thanksgiving. The main dishes include stuffed turkey and pumpkin pie, which became synon-ymous with culinary feast. Parade, usually in costumes of the first settlers of the XVII century and Indians - is another constant attribute of Thanksgiving Day. The largest parade held in New York, it’s main attraction are the huge inflat-able toys. This parade, which is held since 1927, the largest department store Macy’s, extends from Central Park to the entrance to a depart-ment store near Herald Square. At the end of the event, there are fireworks in the east River.

Also on the eve of Thanksgiving adopted charity to feed and please the needy, charities give out gifts, and homeless organize free lunches. Even in the subway stations there are set tables on which you can put your donations to the poor and homeless. The next day after the holiday season opens Christmas sales in stores and on the internet - this day is called “Black Friday.”
