From Baron Caleb Reynolds

Mark down July 10th on your calendars, for Thescorre has new heirs: former Haelies Athos and Bronwyn. Our friends Eric and Katja will be stepping down at Pax; which is less than 2 hours away. Please join me, on that day, in giving Eric and Katja and fond farewell and Athos and Browyn an in-vestiture to remember. I have posted an updated list of VOID and ODC members to the Yahoo page (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Rhydderich_Hael/files/Baronial%20Award%20Lists/) Titles have been removed from both lists to ease in maintaining the lists and no in-sult is intended towards any member listed. Also, I have posted the proposed policy changes on the Yahoo Page (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Rhydderich_Hael/files/Baronial%20Polices/). These proposed changes need to be checked for consistency, grammar and spelling. If you have some free time, and wish to participate in the operations of the Barony, please download the PDF and check it out. Send any corrections to Murigel.

From the Knight Marshall:

Chroniclers Stand in Report: The warriors were growing in number and made strong by the guidance of village elders and master warriors. It would be soon the time when Viking warriors would prepare to lay siege and conquer town and villages along the shore lines. Would they bring back great treasure and honor to their vil-lage? Only time would tell. Practice at the Elks club Wednesdays. Check the e-group for special guest fighters. Please do-nate $5 to cover the cost of the venue. Try on armor and whack a friend with a stiff shot to the head followed by Ale and tales of exploits.

From the Fencing Marshall: Baron Caleb Reynolds

Fencing continues at the Elk's Club on Wednesday nights. On April 28th, there will be a mini fencing tourney; something evil. Our fight practice is held every Wednesday at the Lancaster Elk's Club, 33 Legion Parkway, Lancaster, NY 14086-2553. There is a $5 "pay-to-play" fee to cover the rent.

February Archery Report

I am very pleased to say that Ice Dragon was a good event for the Archers this year. Two of our own re-ceived awards Lord Eldrich the Owl received his Mas-ter Bowman’s badge from their Majesties in Kingdom court ( the award was presented to their Majesties from the Scarlet Guard) and Eirikr, Húsbóndinn inn havi (called edval) was called into Baronial court and given his Bowman’s badge. But getting back to archery, we will be going outdoors very soon possibly by mid April and shooting on Sun-day’s from Noon to 3:00 pm depending on the condi-tions of the ranges at La Salle Sportsmen’s club. Please check the Hael e-group or watch for a friendly post to you personal e-mail if I have your e-mail address. Archery is always open to all and loaner gear will be available if you need it. So don’t be shy come on down and give it a try, who knows, you may like it. Belgraunde Captain of Archers Member of the Scarlet Guard

For the people who want to try the sport. Archery is a great way to keep your muscles exercised. So whether you are new to the sport or an old hand at it, don’t let the cold of winter keep you home bound. This "Old Hound” has a few specialty shoots for prizes up his sleeve for the coming months to get you all to come out and shoot something.

Directions: The easiest way to get there is travel down Niagara Falls Blvd toward the town of Wheatfield (or if you prefer Niagara Falls). Doc's is located on the left side of the road just past the old Melody Fair in the even older Wurlitzer Plant on the second floor. Look for a sign that says Book Outlet (it is in this building). Any questions either e-mail me at ef-fex.b@... (before 5PM) or call my cell phone 310-3950 or land line 633-9517 (before 5PM). If I cannot be reached call Connor (Eric Samulski)@481-8580 for details.

Demo Coordinator Report

Hope everyone enjoyed Ice Dragon and their Easter/Passover Holiday. As April showers pass they will welcome in the month of May and an opportunity for all of us to show our best in a venue we have not done in quite some time, a Mall Demo. We are booked at the Walden Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga on May 1st between the hours of 10:00am to 6:00pm. We have been fortunate enough to get a most sought after spot at the Apple Court, which is lower Sears near the Apple store. This location has the largest flow of people traffic and considered to be center stage for the organizations who demonstrate there. Although I have been contacted by several people from the A&S and Fencing communities, I am sorry to say the response from the fighters has been sparse to say the least. Three have come forward to participate and two of these fine folks are from out of area. If this demo is to go off without a hitch we need everyone to come to-gether to make it work and show the public what a fine organization we are. So don’t be shy, contact me via e-mail: Biotta at worldnet dot att dot net or by phone at: 633-9517 as to whether you can be part of this shinning day for the SCA. In conjunction with the preparation for this demo I am hoping to have new table top demo boards featuring the activities we do that cannot be done at the mall such as equestrian, thrown weapons, archery and others. To accomplish this I would like to meet with the marshals and heads of the guilds within the next two weeks if possible at fighter practices and guild meetings if my work schedule allows going over the written format for each demo board. I am seeking photos from anyone that would highlight these activities for the public and possi-bly entice them to know more about the society where ever these new boards are used like in area libraries. YIS, Biotta

From the Web Minister: I'm updating the site with new (actually

old) Court Reports supplied by His Excel-lency, Caleb and am revamped the substruc-ture for that section. Also I'm exploring a dif-ferent email service for the Officers. And as always, welcome any content submissions or suggestions from the Barony. YIS, Juliana

From The Chronicler:

Greetings from your friendly neighborhood chronicler, outlaw herald and bard. Pretty lofy for a guy who pretty much rambles and inter-jects a joke here and there. Wow, another fantastic Ice Dragon. This Bar-ony always amazes me in how so many come together to host the Kingdom for one of the premier events of the year. Congratulations to Tiercelin and all who helped. For me its not an Ice Dragon unless I’m working and hang-ing out with Joe, Caleb and Charles. It was great to be able to do that Friday night. This issue is predominantly an Ice Dragon retrospective. There are the usual reports, art, and etc but I really wanted to pay testiment to this years Ice Dragon. Ice Dragon is my official anniversay in the SCA. As I have no concept of time I gener-ally describe it as when Count Yngvar sat the thrown. The Ice Dragom was out at the Ba-tavia Downs. The weather was very Icy that morning and the highway was strewn with livery spun out into ditches along the way. My friends borrowed garb from another friend

to fit me. Dominic D’Arthur was the kind soul who lent a stranger garb to wear to his first event. I’m glad to say that Colleen and I con-sider He and his lovely wife Amy some of our best friends today. It’s great how the SCA brings people together. Side note… if you lend a new person a belt with the loop please teach them how to fasten it. Long story short ( and this is pretty short for mean I tend to ramble) Ice Dragon won me over into the SCA. And for this I always hold the splendor of Ice Dragon very close to me. It is the best in what Indoor events have to offer. I look forward to seeing how each is a little different and more and more people bring their special touches to it. I hope you enjoy this issue. Please send content. I like seeing plenty of locally generated stories, art and etc. YIS That Guy Phil

From the Scribal Guild:

Now that the Ice Dragon is finally asleep, we can focus on improving our skills and welcoming some new faces. Thanks to Mistress Gillian for her assistance with the Pentathlon scrolls and many congratulations to our own Lady Sthurrim Caithnes for being named Kings Choice at Ice Dragon. If you'd like to try your hand at Illumination, we'll be leaning the art of Guilding (yes, gold) at the MAY meeting. In June, we'll learn how to fix scrolls. Please join us! This month's meeting is How to Make Quills and Reed Pens with our very own Lord Robert. Please join us at Sweet Melodies on Tuesday at 7 pm. Pani Zofia Kowalewska Scribal Guild Minister

Ice Dragon Moments Submitted by Constantinia I Constantinia, The Wandering Warbler of the Rhydderich Hael did kneel before Baron Caleb and tell him how it has always been my joy to travel and tells others of the wonders of his fine barony, and that it is easy to boast of and sing the praises of this corner of the king-dom because of the skills of our artisan's, our fighters, fencers and bowmen. But of late there is a tale that I have been telling that al-ways receives great laughter from it's listen-ers. For I have been telling of the skills his people have in using a most unusual parry weapon. One day while visiting another bar-ony, I did encounter a young man pos-sessed of an unusual skill of his own, and therefore did commission a gift for my baron that he might be pleased to use as a prize for a tournament of some kind. Seeing what was in the case that I did paint myself, our good baron did laugh out loud and show the mini carrot sword and bunny dagger to their royal majesties, and vow to devise the per-fect event to use them as the prize. Making the Baron Squeal and then Laugh is one of my favorite moments of this my sec-ond attending of an Ice Dragon event.

The 36th Annual Festival of the Passing of the

Ice Dragon

It was Saturday March 27 and the Rhydderich Hael opened the great castle gates of the Connecticut Street Armory to welcome the Known World to it lands in cele-bration of the annual Festival of the Pass-ing of the Ice Dragon. Artisans, fighters,. fencers, merchants, Royalty, peers, and good gentles from far and wide enjoyed a full day of activities in the medieval splendor of the venues backdrop. The head count was estimated at over 650 people. The Pent hosted many talented arti-sans, the lists were full of great competitors, the merchant spaces ebbed with shoppers and great imports from near and far, and as al-ways the people of the SCA showed as a spectacular forefront against a grand back-ground of stoned walls, arches, wood work and many splendid banners of the realm. It was an awesome day.

“A Sword”

Some months ago His Grace, Sir Maynard asked it the Bar-ony had a motto. Not only is our Barony rich in talent, in bounty, and in beauty but we are apparently rich in mottos as well. There are two. The first with earlier use in the Barony’s history is “Death before dishonor”. The second and most recent is "Nothing Without Effort". As we all learned, members of the Barony are passionate about each motto. Month’s went by and nothing was said again about the Mottos. Then during Ice Dragon’s Baronial Court, the King-dom Champion Duke Sir Maynard set aside the sword of state and approached the Baron to make a special presenta-tion. Himself, a former Rhydderich Hael Baronial Heavy Weapons Champion, His Grace had commissioned Tower (Soon to be Baron Tower of St. Swithin's Bog with his lovely lady Mistress Cynthia de Tower) to craft a special weapon to be worn by the Hael’s Heavy Weapons Cham-pion. The sword bares both mottos etched in latin. One on each side of the might sword’s quillians and the Barony’s Dragon Device etched there upon just before the blade (photo right). Baron Caleb Reynold’s was moved by the graciousness of the gift. Current Baronial Champ, his Excellency Baron Sir Sextus Plinius Callidus is current holder of the sword.

Duke Sir Maynard presents Baron Caleb Reynolds with a new sword he had commis-sioned to be carried by the Rhyderrich Hael’s Heavy Weapons Champion. The sword was made by Tower of St Swithin’s Bog. Photo by Juan Miguel

Thank You from Baron Caleb Reynolds

Many many thanks go out to everyone who helped to make Ice Dragon a wonderful event. I am sorry that Baronial court was rushed and that I didn't get to thank everyone then, but I will catch up to everyone with Haelstones at a fight practice.

Thank you Maynard for the sword, I was, and still am, speechless due to your generosity.

Thank you Edval and your crew (and I will learn all of their names one of the days) for the lifting, toting, carry-ing, door holding and escorting that all of y'all did.

Chris, you received several compliments from the MOLs and the marshals about the courtesy you showed to-wards them and your fellow fighters.

Alisha, Murigel, Zosia and Gwen, thank you for retaining and making sure that I ate.

Elizabeth, thank you for another Ice Dragon's worth of heralding.

Berhrend, Callidus, Jenna, thank you for marshaling and running the tournaments.

To David, who was one of the last five people out of the building, thank you for spending another evening cleaning up an event.

Murigel, thank you for running the merchant.

Jock, I did not even know that you were at the event, let alone chained to the kitchen all day.

Zosia, Gwen, Isolda, Morwenna, Murigel, Gillian, Maave, Not-So-Evil-Jill, New Sarah, Kat and Robert and every other scribe who donated their time, material and skill I thank you from the bottom of my heart. With every "oooh" and "ahhhh" you showed our visitors that we have some of the finest scribes in the Kingdom.

To everyone who sat at troll, thank you.

To everyone who worked in the Pent room, many thanks.

Tiercelin and Joe, thank you for putting on a great event.

To Master Charles, who busted his butt all day on Friday for set up, worked half the event and then spent the other half at ECMC waiting with a fighter who was injured on the list. If anyone wonders what "peer like be-havior" really means, I would advise you to speak with Charles.

And finally, to everyone whom I missed; if you worked, marshaled, judged, heralded, swept, lifted, stacked, moved, set up or cleaned up, I thank you and the Barony thanks you.

From the Autocrat:

I don't even know where to start and I know I am going to miss someone so I will apologize in ad-vance. In fact, there were some people helping who I did not even know and never had a chance to really meet, but who are another shining example of why we do what we do! And so, in no particular order.... First to Jock (because you were on duty for almost a month before-hand) who walked in at 9, got thrown in the kitchen and did not leave it until 9 pm... Joe, my right hand...you rock! Charles - peer qualities does not even begin to de-scribe it. He really is a shining example and an in-spiration. He worked like a dog all day Friday and Saturday, and then was in the emergency room for hours helping a wounded fighter - and cheerful the entire time. That Guy Phil and his lovely lady Cordelia - Phil worked hard on Friday, and then he and his wife ran a fabulous children's area - lots of smiling little faces! Laurel, who once again arrived, went right to worked and toiled away quietly all day and night long in the kitchen. Baroness Morgan, who spent her first non-merchanting ID (and you thought you just got to have fun!) first at Troll and then in the kitchen. I owe you bigtime. Edval and House Inhavi - who froze outside in the morning unloading people and them brought them back to their cars at night - not to mention all the set-up help the day before! Welcome to the SCA and Edval, to the Hael! The EK's loss - our gain. Muirghel for a bang-up job dealing with the mer-chants - it ran so smoothly! Thanks to Jacquetta for being a fabulous Royalty Liaison! Orianna, Fridrikr & their seamless crew for another fabulous Pent - we heard nothing but compliments! Victor and Elizabeth for a wonderful tavern - it's largely un-sung job, but I am definitely singing your praises. (Continued next column)

16

Cori, Ekat, Jenna and their helpers for smooth and competent MOL-ing. Maeve for set-up help, clean-up help and a great Chatelaine station. William and James - who love cleaning up so much you drove all the way from Pittsburgh to do it! Edith, Tree, Liadain, Sara, Amy, and everyone else who helped at Troll (including the wonderful lady whose name I have sadly forgotten!) Callidus, Jenna and Berhend for great tourneys! I have heard a lot of compliments on the fighting. Zofia, for dealing with all the pre-reg and scribal! Alex, for having the money where and when we needed it and the fastest ever job with the after-event report (and Edith on that one, too). Caleb - Baron by day and floor-mopper by night... The ACG cooks - I know I saw at least Ghille in the kitchen and one more lovely gentleman quietly washing dishes in the back. David, again, quietly helping with set-up and clean-ing. And as I said, I know there are people I have forgot-ten - but thank you, thank you, thank you! And to the populace of AEthelmearc, their Majes-ties Henri and Elena, her Highness Tessa and the Prince and Princess of Ealdormere - without you we would not have had the most amazing, wonderful Ice Dragon ever. You made the Dream real on Sat-urday. Looking forward to next year! Cheers - Tiercelin

Sonnet Dante Alighieri Love reigns serenely in my lady's eyes, ennobling everything she looks upon; towards her, when she passes, all men turn, and he whom she salutes feels his heart fail; so that, with drooping counte-nance, and pale, he then because of his shortcomings sighs: before her, pride re-treats and anger flies: assist me, ladies, now to honor her. All sweetness, all humility of thought stir in the heart of him who hears her speak; and he who sees her first is blest indeed. And when she smiles her beauty is such as cannot be told, nor in the mem-ory held, so fair, so new a miracle it is.
