ECM recording artist and trumpeter Mathias Eick’s expansive, detailed arrangements are informed by pop references like Radiohead and Joni Mitchell, while echoes of Kenny Wheeler can be heard in his sinuous trumpet playing. A key member of post-rock supergroup Jaga Jazzist (Ninja Tune), Eick’s compositions and live show share a lot with that group’s propulsive rhythms, though with more open arrangements and emotive, freewheeling solos. His dynamic quintet is capable of going on some truly "re-breathing jams, where electronics and melodies soar above the interlocking double-drum groove! With Andreas Ulvo piano, Nicolai Hængsle Eilertsen bass, Gard Nilssen & Andreas Bye drums. Thanks to Utenriks Department, Norway, Norsk Musikinformasjon

Straight out of Haarlem (Netherlands), composer and violist Ig Henneman leads a dynamic and intense Dutch/Canadian sextet into some highly adventurous sonic territories. These prodigiously talented musicians nail the complex intersecting lines and vigorous rhythmic patterns of Henneman’s compositions, while also digging into otherworldly and mind-altering improvisations that stretch the very de!nition of each instrument. While often boisterous and muscular, this uncompromising and passionate music also shares some of the hard lines and austerity of contemporary classical music. With avant all-stars Ab Baars sax/clarinet, Axel Dörner trumpet, Lori Freedman bass clarinet, Marilyn Lerner piano, Wilbert de Joode bass. Thanks to the Performing Arts Fund NL, Stitching Wig
