Warmblood News 1 Volume XVII, Issue 3 December 2006 The $2500.00 SPORTPONY STAR SEARCH CHALLENGE CUP For many years, Sportponies have been bred by discriminating breeders in Ontario and have been shown in all levels of competition with huge success. Until a few years ago, there was no recognized registry for this blend of superior equine nor was there a place for breeders to showcase their breeding stock. With the introduction of the American Sportpony Registry and the availability of American Sportpony Registry inspections to Canadian breeders and owners, the Sportpony has literally ‘taken flight’ in Canada and most significantly in Eastern Canada. With this in mind, there has been interest in shows adding Sportpony breeding to its show class list. These classes have been very well supported and often the entries have outnumbered the horses showing in other classes. Morton Stables, an established Sportpony breeding farm in Ontario, had a vision to showcase the very best of the Sportponies being produced in Eastern Canada and the US at the prestigious Toronto Royal Winter Fair. The Royal has long been a very important International Horse Show. It is reputed to be one of the largest indoor horse shows in the world, boasting International show jumping teams and horses qualifying from all over the world. The Royal was very excited to present the Finals of the Sportpony Star Search Challenge Cup and scheduled the main coliseum to present this class. (This being one of the very rare occasions that a line class was held in the performance ring.) Casitron Ltd. of Canada became the major sponsor of the Sportpony Star Search Challenge Cup with the American Sportpony Registry offering an additional cash prize of $1000.00 if the winner was inspected and registered with the American Sportpony Registry. Qualifying shows were chosen in both Canada and the USA to make the qualifying process realistic for all breeders and exhibitors. Qualifying Sportponies were not required to be registered at that point but many were inspected ASPR Sportponies. At the five qualifying shows, judges selected the winning entries from the following categories: 2 year and under ~ Qualifiers: GOOD KNIGHT WILKE owner: Michaila Zandri, London Ont., MORTONS KITTY KAT (pictured top left) owner: Darlene Morton, Sharon Ont., BEAVERWOODS ORIEL owner: Kirsten Brunner, Hillsburgh Ont., ROTHERWOOD BO JANGLE (pictured top center) owner: Diane Jackson, Thamsford Ont., THE CAT’S MEOW (pictured top right) owner: Karen Johnson, Aurora Ont.; mare or gelding 3 years and over ~ Qualifiers: NIKKI TWO SHOES owner: Jane Mitchell, Orangeville Ont., SDF ONE HOT CHICK (pictured right center) owner: Tara Defendorf, Hilton NY, USA, BEAVERWOODS SAPHIRE owner: Kirsten Brunner, Hillsburgh Ont., PATTINAE (pictured bottom right) owner: Shara Pavan, St. Catherines Ont., VISION TIGER LILY BRIGHT owner: Megan Harris, On.; and stallion 3 years and over ~ Qualifiers: *ROSEDALE TOP CAT (pictured center Photo Credit: Cealy Tetley www.cealytetley.com) owner: Darlene Morton, Sharon Ont., *STOCKHAM COMMANDER M (pictured bottom center) owner: Darlene Morton, Sharon Ont., GLORYWOOD PRINCE WILLIAM owner: Deborah Dobson , BENNO’S HIT (pictured bottom left) owner: Jane Southgate, Glen Morris, Ont., OXNEAD ALLSTAR (pictured bottom left) owner/agent: David Dew. year-old licensed British Riding Pony, was imported and trained by Morton Stables. This is not *Rosedale Top Cat’s first big win as he has been extensively shown in both Canada and the USA where he has amassed 19 Championships and is undefeated in Sportpony shows in North America. Reserve Champion of the Sportpony Star Search Challenge Cup was *Rotherwood Bo Jangles, owned by Diane Jackson. *Rotherwood Bo Jangles breeder came from England to attend the Challenge Cup and was thrilled to see the stallion earn reserve champion. Because of the huge success of the Sportpony Star Search Challenge Cup in 2006, the American Sportpony Registry looks forward to sponsoring a similar event in 2007 with the addition of more qualifying classes on both sides of the Canadian-US border. Penny Rose writes: AWR Rio's Romulus (pictured right) (Rio Grande x Gwenos Welsh Rose) was the Reserve Junior Grand Champion Canadian Sport Horse at Toronto's Royal

Winter Fair, November 2006. This handsome yearling gelding is a delight to be with. Thanks to Angela Morton for handling him this year." Linda Share writes: Results from the November 7, 2006 inspection at Equivale Farms in DeLeon Springs, Florida: Nova Etoile (pictured left), scored a first premium premier 8.0, which is the top 2 % in the country. This fabulous filly was the site champion as well. Lesley Bonner writes: Pacific Pride Sponge Bob (pictured right) continues to woo the crowds with his talented

performance and wonderful personality, consistently placing 1st in his show jumping classes and a respectable 7

th at an Entry Level Event.

Congratulations go to Ellie Schobel and Raison de Joie who won the huge Materiale class at Devon for 4/5-year-old stallions and geldings. He won with a 5% margin over Rapture R, a well known Oldenburg NA breeding stallion. Cathrine Kern reports: Lars and Sarah Kern (pictured left) were Reserve Champions at the BLM Region I Championships in Lexington, Virginia. The two competed in the First Level Junior Division earning a score of 66%. Lars and Sarah were also awarded the Junior High Score award for the four-day show. This award was earned with a score of 71.47%. Pictured right is Meredith Mathers riding Coupe De Ville. This

Daktary, a well-known Grand Prix horse of the 1980s and '90s, was euthanized on Oct. 18 due to the infirmities of old age. She was 27. Standing 17.3 hands and weighing more than 1,700 pounds, Daktary, was an impressive mare to behold in the competition ring. The Hannoverian mare, by Darling, was trained to Grand Prix by Robert Dover and first competed at that level at age eight with David DeWispelaere. In 1988, DeWispelaere and Daktary won a Grand Prix class at Dressage at Devon (Pa.) and in the fall captured the Col. Bengt Ljundquist Memorial Championship at Grand Prix with the highest score at that level (64.27%) in the Championships' history, at that time. Mary Flood, of Wildfire Farm, began riding Daktary in 1989 and competed the mare for the next five years. The two were top Grand Prix competitors, winning classes at Devon and other notable shows, and were long-listed for the U.S. Equestrian Team in the early 1990s. "She was absolutely wonderful to ride. Everybody noticed her and everybody knew her. She was this big, awesome dark bay horse with a huge tail; she really had a lot of presence. I was very lucky to be able to ride her," said Flood. Randy Dauphin, Marshall, Va., bought the mare in Texas as a 3-year-old when she'd been newly imported. Dauphin recalled the first time she saw Daktary. "I felt the ground shaking, and I saw this gigantic mare trotting toward us in the field. The owner said, 'Oh, you don't want her, she'll never be any good.' But she was the most magnificent horse I'd ever seen," said Dauphin. Daktary was from a family of prominent competitors, with her full brother Dynasty being Canadian Cindy Ishoy's World Cup and Olympic partner. When Dauphin bought the mare, she was bred to Adios III and produced Aries, who became an exceptional broodmare. After being bred to Waldgott, Aries gave birth to the American Warmblood Registry registered and licensed stallion Waldaire in 1989. The chestnut stallion went on to win more than 43 national year-end awards, and, at age 18, still competes at the Grand Prix level with Ellie Rawle and stands at Watermark Farm (Pa.). "Daktary was the most intelligent horse I've ever known in my life. She knew everything; she was very kind and very brilliant," said Dauphin.
