The following pages of this bulletin provide information about our services this morning, including the text of our assigned readings and the music (at our 10:15 service), as well as news about upcoming events. Please take this bulletin with you to refer to in the coming days.

The small candle on the altar is a Candle for Peace. A practice begun in Russia, peace candles are being passed from church to church around the world. (Ours is from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in The Dalles, Oregon.) The candles and the story of the peace candle are available at the back of the church.

We hope guests and visitors will take a peace candle to their home church.

The Altar Flowers are given this morning to the glory of God and in loving memory of

The Collect of the Day

The Celebrant bids the assigned collect, saying these or some other words of introduction

The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Priest Let us pray.

Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your gift that your faithful people offer

you true and laudable service: Grant that we may run without stumbling to obtain your heavenly promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Isaiah 1:10-18

A lector reads the first reading from Scripture, first saying

A Reading from the Book of the prophet Isaiah.

Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom! Listen to the teaching of our

God, you people of Gomorrah! What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the LORD; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. When you come to appear before me, who asked this from your hand? Trample my courts no more; bringing offerings is futile; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and sabbath and calling of convocation— I cannot endure solemn assemblies with iniquity. Your new moons and your appointed festivals my soul hates; they have become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them. When you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood.

Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. Come now, let us argue it out, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm – Psalm 32:1-8

A reader leads the congregation in saying the Psalm at the 8 AM service.

At the 10:15 service, the choir will sing the antiphon once, then the congregation sings the antiphon with the choir. The Cantor sings the verses, with the congregation joining as indicated

1 Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, *

and whose sin is put away! 2 Happy are they to whom the LORD imputes no guilt, *

and in whose spirit there is no guile!

Antiphon

3 While I held my tongue, my bones withered away, * because of my groaning all day long.

4 For your hand was heavy upon me day and night; * my moisture was dried up as in the heat of summer.

Antiphon

5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you, * and did not conceal my guilt.

6 I said," I will confess my transgressions to the LORD." * Then you forgave me the guilt of my sin.

Antiphon

7 Therefore all the faithful will make their prayers to you in time of trouble; * when the great waters overflow, they shall not reach them.

8 You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; * You surround me with shouts of deliverance.

Antiphon

Second Reading – 2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12

A lector reads the second reading from Scripture, first saying

A Reading from Second Thessalonians.

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of everyone of you for one another is increasing. Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring. To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

Gospel Hymn (10:15 only) “And now, O Father, mindful of the love” Hymnal 337, vv. 1 & 2

Gospel – Luke 19:1-10

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named

Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him.

All who saw it began to grumble and said, "He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner." Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much."

9

Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost."

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon – The Rev. Jedediah D. Holdorph

A period of silence will be observed for reflection after the sermon.

The Nicene Creed BCP, p. 358

The Prayers of the People, Form IV BCP, p. 388

The Exchange of the Peace BCP, p. 360

The celebrant invites all to share a sign of God’s peace.

Please greet those sitting beside and in the rows in front of and/or behind you.

Birthday/Anniversary Blessings (along with other special prayers/announcements)

Those with birthdays and/or anniversaries to celebrate are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. The People and Celebrant say the appropriate prayer together.

For birthdays:

Watch over your children (child), O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their lives (life), through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For anniversaries:

O gracious and everliving God, look mercifully on your servants. Grant them your blessing, and assist them with your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love they may honor and keep their promises and vows; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

If other members of the congregation wish, they may ask for additional prayers and blessings.

A small “treasure chest” is placed on the chancel rail near the flowers. As members come forward for blessing, they may choose to place a thank offering in the chest. These gifts will be used to support outreach efforts for others in our community.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to Trinity We invite you to “stand and be counted” during our worship this morning – and perhaps to come to Brooks Hall for the Adult Forum at 9:15 between the two morning services, or stick around and join us for a cup of coffee and a chance to meet others here at Trinity after our 10:15 service.

Announcement: Consecration Sunday is Coming — TODAY @ 8 & 10:15 AM On behalf of this year’s Stewardship Team, Jack Crowell will offer an announcement at both of our morning services about stewardship and our upcoming “Consecration Sunday” celebration.

We have more information coming out in the mail this week, so stay tuned … and please be sure to be part of our celebration on Sunday, November 6.

Adult Forum — TODAY @ 9:15 AM Our weekly adult forum meets in Brooks Hall between our morning services, offering a time of fellowship, as well as a chance to exchange information or engage in deeper reflection.

We opened up a conversation last Sunday on the connections between our faith and our politics. Those who participated asked to carry it on over to this weekend, so that’s what we’re doing! Nobody gets to tell anyone else who to vote for, but it is worth asking about how our professed values inform our stated priorities in the public sphere.

Next week, the Adult Forum will still be offered for those arriving to engage in conversation before the 10:15 service. We’ll celebrate All Saints’ Sunday next week, so it seems a good time to talk about an Episcopal understanding of saints and sainthood.

Ministry Leaders Meeting — Thursday @ 4 PM Curious about ministries and plans at Trinity? Please join the Ministry Leaders in their monthly meeting in Brooks Hall. And if there is a particular ministry that you would like to know about, let me know ahead of time so I can be sure we talk about it. Contact Genie McBurnett, Ministries Facilitator, at [email protected].

Taize Service — Thursday @ 7 PM The Taize Choir of Central Oregon invites you to participate in an hour of prayerful non-denominational Taize music and silence at this monthly ecumenical service held in St. Helens Hall. The theme for this service is 'Prayers for the End of Life'. For more information call (541) 815-5574 or email [email protected].

Daylight Saving Time ends — NEXT Sunday @ 2 AM Technically, it’s one of those middle of the night events, but it’d be better to set your clocks back before you go to bed on Saturday night. Then, come to church well-rested the next morning.

Page 15: The 24 Sunday after Pentecost - Trinity Episcopal Churchtrinitybend.org/wp-content/uploads/2016-10-30-Proper-26.pdfOct 30, 2016  · Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your gift

15

Consecration Sunday — NEXT Sunday! Consecration Sunday is a special day for all of us at Trinity. The Rt. Rev. John Thornton, 11th Bishop of Idaho, will be our special preacher at both services. During the morning services, you’ll be asked to fill out an “estimate of giving” card.

And then stay on and enjoy a celebration for all of us. Bishop Thornton and Jan, his wife, will be joining us for a brunch catered by Bleu Bite following each of the morning services. We need your reservation card so we can give the caterer a good headcount! We’d like every member and regular attendee present for one of the services and brunch!

All Saints’ Sunday — NEXT Sunday The Feast of All Saints, November 1, is one of the major feasts of the Christian year, so much so that our observance of the day carries over to the following Sunday. On All Saints Sunday, we give thanks for the Communion of Saints – for the fellowship we share with those who have gone before us, and for the example our forebears have set for all of us.

As part of that celebration, we will remember loved ones. A special insert is in your bulletin this Sunday. Please complete the remembrance form and place it in the offering plate today.

We remember loved ones who have died and we also celebrate our incorporation into that blessed company through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. If you would like the Sacrament of Baptism for yourself or a loved one in your family, please contact the parish office before the end of this month. A time to speak with Fr. Jed will be arranged before we celebrate the holy day.

Trinity Women’s Collective — Thursday, November 10th The “Trinity Women’s Collective” is gathering on Thursday, November 10, starting at 5:00 PM in Brooks Hall at Trinity. Cathy Douglass will show a movie about the passion of cooking, "Julie and Julia." Bring your favorite Julia dish, or a delicious dish of choice to share. After the movie, we can talk about "Strong Women" and how they followed their passion.

Please RSVP to Cathy at (503) 757-3908 or [email protected] if you’re coming and if you’d like to minion. Please join us for dinner, a movie, and conversation!

Trinity Boutique and Bake Sale — Saturday, November 19th Boutique and Bake Sale Posters are available this morning in Brooks Hall. Please pick up one of them – or a few of them! – and post them in places where you do business by November 1. Thanks for helping us get the word out so we can raise funds for Trinity Outreach.

We would also like to thank everyone who has offered to make items for our Bake Sale at the Trinity Boutique and Bake Sale. We are still in need of all baked goods and candies including breads, cookies, cakes, pies and fudge. Please plan on bringing your items to St. Helen’s Hall on Thursday and Friday, November 17th and 18th between 12:00 noon and 5:00. Have them wrapped and ready to sell and include a list of ingredients. Gluten-free items are always welcome.

Questions may be directed to Wendy Seems at [email protected] or (541) 390-3937 or Cathy Douglass at [email protected] or (503) 757-3908.
