A Letter from TMI Education

CEO and Founder,

Dr. Brian Chinni

Dear Colleagues,

We hope this finds you very well and enjoying a most satisfying and successful close to the 2018-2019 school year.

One of the many aspects of our profession that makes it so uniquely satisfying is the annual opportunity for rebirth and renewal. The rather intensive, yet, exciting end of one school year and the enthusiastic anticipation of the new, brings this to mind and reignites our collective desire to, once again, do great things for our students. Yes, there will be challenges. However, in every one of these challenges there will lie the opportunity for positive changes – changes that can potentially influence the tens of thousands of students that we serve across our great County and State. We are the agents and leaders of this change, and I am proud to be in your company.

The challenges confronting our schools are increasingly more demanding and, perhaps, even daunting. Educational leaders like us have the unique and privileged opportunity to continuously renew our schools in ways that will most benefit our students and, in turn, optimally prepare each for their life and work. Such leadership requires courage, tireless effort and energy, self-sacrifice, perseverance, an insatiable desire to learn and grow, and, ideally, sustained collegial support.

To this end, our TMI Professional Learning Consortium (PLC) - and its many related workshops, events, conferences, and innovative resources and services - will continue to be the source of professional development for our colleagues and their respective learning communities. While all TMI programs, events, resources, and services are available to anyone, TMI PLC members specifically benefit from a significantly more cost-effective, collaborative, and collegial model for sustained professional learning and support. These benefits include, but are not limited to 1) 30+ single-day workshops, 2) numerous collaborative organizational events, including annual EdCamps and special conferences, 3) innovative resources, and 4) discounted in-district programs and services.

At this time, I enthusiastically encourage you to review the enclosed information and consider any one of our three (3) membership options - individual, "professional pairs" (new) or district membership in the 2019-2020 TMI PLC. As always, I am available at your convenience. Please feel comfortable to call me (1-888-864-6364 ext. 1) or email me ([email protected]) any time.

All my very best wishes -

Brian

2019-2020TMIPLC WorkshopsTMI-ENVISION Workshop OfferingsThe TMI-ENVISION Partnership: Promoting Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) to Foster Safer Learning Spaces and Improve Academic DevelopmentTo foster safe learning spaces, many schools are shifting their attention to the promotion of pro-social behaviors in their classrooms. Undeniably, SEL and academic development are interconnected and central to the learning process. SEL not only prepares students to be able to participate in learning experiences, it also increases students’ capacity to learn. All sessions are lively, experiential and fun - and a series model lets us do a deeper dive into what it takes. All programs are aligned to the NJ DOE Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies and sub-competencies, as well as the PSEL standards.

SEL through Mindful Practices (December 9, 2019)Currently, Mindful Practices are ubiquitous in the schoolhouse - and with good reason. Although more research needs to be completed, the early data points to positive impacts on students’ well being as well as academic achievement. Thats’s the good news.

The bad news is that oft times, Mindfulness is a collection of activities in which classrooms engage, without a grounding structure. Move one or two of the people in the schoolhouse and the “program” begins to unravel.

Join us and align SEL and Mindful practices into your content. In this session participants will learn how to: • Use the NJDOE SEL competencies and sub-competencies to guide and instill Mindful

practices• Elicit appropriate neurotransmitters for happy, productive student engagement• Get students to evaluate their own social and self awareness with the CPR chart

Stop, Drop and Breathe• Incorporate movement into content

Audience: All Grade PK-12 Educators; Instructor: Sharon McCarthy, EnVision President and TMI Lead Consultant

SEL and Conflict Resolution: A Focus on Relationship Skills(January 16, 2020)Conflict is a natural part of life. When we learn and practice conflict resolution, we become better problem solvers.

Conflict resolution is an antidote to bullying. Surveyed students share frustration with the amount of attention placed on negative behaviors. Their solution is to teach students ways in which they can deal with those behaviors. And…when we listen to our students, they will tell us, “Kindness is the key for safer schools.”

School safety teams that value social justice reduce exclusionary practices. By fostering positive social and emotional learning for students, student misconduct is addressed in a positive, fair and unbiased manner.

This session addresses NJDOE SEL sub-competencies as well as the NJ Career Ready Practices. Attend this session to:

• Strategize how to tap into the “parts” of of students that are empowering tosupport the “parts” that aren’t. (Strength-based)

• Establish “recovery” spaces• Review the concepts of conflict resolution• Practice a problem solving process• Use a conflict resolution model• Practice the language of respect

2019-2020TMIPLC WorkshopsTMI-ENVISION Workshop OfferingsENVISION: The HOW of Social Emotional Learning & Out of School Time (October 10, 2019)There is a growing evidence that the social and emotional competencies youth develop while in afterschool programs can contribute to their success in school and life (Durlak, Weissberg, & Pachan, 2010; Farrington et al., 2012; Pierce, Auger, & Vandell, 2013). Specifically, promoting Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is associated with significant improvements in self-concept, connections to school, positive social behaviors, levels of academic achievement, and with significant reductions in problem behaviors.

Competent adult staff are the linchpin of effective after-school programs targeting SEL outcomes. To that end, this energizing, concrete session will equip OST providers with structures and activities to build young people’s social and emotional competencies through experiential learning and practices.

Participants will:

• Consider sequence of SEL training for OST context• Establish explicit, realistic SEL goals for OST time frame• Practice lessons that are active and reflective and focus on SEL skill

development• Discuss evaluation components to assess program for continuous

improvement

2019-2020TMIPLC WorkshopsTMI-ENVISION Workshop OfferingsImplementing a Sustainable SEL Program (March 12, 2020)How do we leverage our resources in the best possible way to implement and sustain this important work? Educators know SEL is the difference that will make the difference, but with all the other demands, most feel there is “No time!” to teach social-emotional skills to their students. SEL gives young people the skills to train their own minds; know themselves and establish healthy habits for a lifetime.

Enjoy this opportunity to work with a strategist who will support you in your implementation goals and outcomes and structures to get there. There is so much in our schools already that has the potential to offer lessons about social, emotional, or moral issues—when we take the time to make these connections.

This is where the rubber hits the road!

Please attend this important session to:

• Determine desired state and current state of your SEL implementation and design a planto bridge the gap

• Use a decision protocol• Create a strategic plan• Reflect on appropriate rubrics• Examine the indicators of robust SEL• Receive resources

Mindful Practices for Those Who Give the Most: Educators! (October 18, 2020)Consider sending your teachers to this workshop as recognition and celebration for their efforts all school year!

Public Educators may be the most sacrificial professionals. Educators give until they have zero left to give - and then they give some more. A recent Gallup Poll finds 46% of teachers report high daily stress during the school year. That’s tied with nurses for the highest rate among all occupational groups.

The bad news: High levels of stress affect teacher health and well-being. Teacher burnout, job dissatisfaction, poor performance, and turnover rates are at record highs.

The good news: SEL/Mindfulness programs for teachers lead to improved health by reducing anxiety and depression. In addition, they help teachers develop coping and awareness skills. Recent research from the Curry School of Education, U of Va, suggest that we expand the focus of professional development to include personal development . In a study of of 234 teachers, representing K-12, they found that: “Teachers who regularly use stress-reducing strategies increase their abilities to cope with the demands of the career and are positioned to do a better job educating students.”

More good news: If your district is moving forward with a SEL initiative, taking care of your staff is step #1. Teachers who can respond rather than react model appropriate behaviors for students.

Participants will learn:

• mindfulness/stress reduction practices to promote self-regulationof attention;

• non-judgmental awareness;• how to develop a personal mindfulness practice (which is

necessary to be a mindful teacher which is necessary to teachmindfulness!); and

• how to maximize the space between stimulus and response.

Please plan to join Sharon McCarthy, popular presenter and author, for a day of Mindful Practices to Benefit those who Give the Most: Educators. Audience: All Grade PK-12 Educators

Keys to Close the Gap: Interventions for Special Education and SES Gaps (March 6, 2020)As an instructional leader, you are keenly aware that the best interventions are robust strategies that work well in the least restrictive environment and benefit all learners. Currently, how are you supporting your teachers’ acquisition of current skills and knowledge in this difficult but necessary endeavor?

Effective strategies and interventions help learners to be successful at acquiring, storing and applying knowledge, and ensure that each student can learn to work with others, both necessary for success in the classroom and beyond. In this newly designed two day workshop, participants will acquire the skills and dispositions to increase their ability to support teachers to connect research to evidence-based practices that positively impact student learning, both behaviorally and academically. bout the brain and learning to support our students’ ability to be resilient.

Perfect for Instructional Leaders, Instructional Coaches, Child Study Teams, co-teaching teams, School Improvement Teams, RAC school teams and educators committed to EACH student’s growth. Participants will learn to:

• Use concrete “gap zappers” to foster students’ independent processing and application across content;

• Apply teaching and learning strategies that help students acquire self-control (at the neurological level), necessary for positive behavior as well as effective test taking;

• Ask the three questions that reveal root cause of learning and behavior difficulties.

• Apply successful protocols and templates for organization in writing• Teach students how to learn• Build students’ academic vocabulary

2019-2020TMIPLC WorkshopsTMI-ENVISION Workshop OfferingsEye Read! Improving Functional Vision to Increase Student Learning (November 15, 2019)There is a GLARING problem with your reading interventions - do you know what that is? Hint: it isn’t anything cognitive. It is physiological and its name is FUNCTIONAL VISION!

Ask any reading specialist/interventionist and they will tell you that they notice these difficulties all the time, but feel unprepared to do anything about it - except for refer the student out to a developmental ophthalmologist or a particularly savvy physical therapist. WE can deliver the simple exercises to fix this critical deficit and it’s time we did! Our underserved learners deserve nothing less!

Good to Know: Eyesight is your ability to see objects clearly and the technical term for it is visual acuity. Visual acuity is a measurement of what size letter you can see at the standard distance of 20 feet. Normal visual acuity is 20/20. (Fun fact: The chart used for acuity was developed in 1862 - before the lightbulb!)

Functional vision encompasses more than just eyesight. It’s how you use your entire visual system -- the eyes, the brain, the visual pathways -- to work together to help you interact with your environment. Because functional vision includes more than just your visual acuity, you can actually have 20/20 eyesight and still have a functional vision problem.

Focus on Facts: According to COVD, one in ten children have a vision problem significant enough to impact learning. These children appear to have a learning disability or an attention problem when the real culprit is poor visual processing skills.

2019-2020TMIPLC WorkshopsTMI-ENVISION Workshop OfferingsEstablishing an Empowering School Culture for All (February 27, 2020)Programs don’t improve schools - people do.

Culture is the “way we do things around here”. Culture indoctrinates new hires. Let that last sentence sink in…

The culture of a school determines the degree of its’ success. A school’s culture is made up of the values, beliefs, and behaviors of its individual members. Creating learning spaces where each individual can grow and take risks requires a conscious focus on physical and psychological safety.

This day benefits School Safety Team members, School Leaders, Climate and Culture Specialists, Teacher Leaders and any other members of a school that are interested in school improvement.

If your goal is to create schools to which folks want to belong, please join us to:

• assess and establish trust and rapport on an individual and group basis;

• learn and practice the language of respect and resolution;• practice structures for successful PLCs;• apply a conflict resolution tool; and• align actions and behaviors in a common and agreed upon

direction.

2019-2020TMIPLC WorkshopsTMI-ENVISION Workshop OfferingsEducational Neuroscience and Student Engagement (January 28, 2020)Engagement is more than keeping students on task, it requires keeping students interested! Whew! Can this feel like a huge challenge! In the modern classroom, teachers are competing with endless distractions and shrinking attention spans.

An engaged student is curious, self-driven, and excited to discover what happens next. Research has proven that this enthusiasm correlates with success in the classroom. Engagement is fundamental to academic and behavioral growth.

While developing the skills to command and direct attention is an important first step, engagement is about students investing in their own learning. Student engagement isn’t about manipulating students into behaving, but about creating equal, active, and committed partners in the learning process.

In this session, we’ll share different approaches to help your students feel a sense of accomplishment and a desire to perform through:

• Maximizing instructional time• Creating lessons that spark interest• Understanding and applying different assessments• Incorporating tenants of educational neuroscience• Keeping collaborative groups on task

2019-2020TMIPLC WorkshopsTMI-ENVISION Workshop OfferingsENVISION: PARA-Power! (February 3, 2020)Para-educators are an essential part of the special education team. They deliver individualized services and play an increasingly prominent role in the support of instruction of individuals with exceptionalities at all ages (Giangreco, Suter, & Doyle, 2010). Paras need to be recognized and supported as they continue to make countless lives better.

Paras often see things that teachers can’t. They know the students in a different way, having tight relationships with the students who need adult support most. And, it is always good to remember, paras often do the hardest jobs with the toughest students, and they do it for the least amount of money.

To be competent in their job, Paras must have knowledge, skills, and abilities to do all that is expected and required. Paras, like all educators, need and generally want professional development. Savvy leaders recognize Para’s needs and find funding to support them.

Send your Paras or perhaps send them with their Co-teaching team. The focus of this session will be on:

• Ability to use strategies that promote students’ independence• Understanding of ethical and confidential considerations• Ability to employ constructive and clear communication strategies• Specific ways to resolve conflicts• Awareness of one’s impact on the overall learning environment

2019-2020TMIPLC WorkshopsTMI-EnVision Workshop OfferingsTeaching in the Age of Anxiety (October 10, 2019)Today, teachers face daunting challenges. They struggle with unusually high and sometimes conflicting expectations, limited autonomy, limited resources, unnecessary state mandates, and very few opportunities for growth and development.

In addition teachers must provide not only for the safety of their students, but for their intellectual, social, emotional and moral development in systems that offer little guidance and support. The students, in their charge, also grapple with their own issues like drug abuse, self esteem, obesity, suicide as well as many social media challenges and academic pressures. The schoolroom environment and the world at large has changed no doubt!

• How can teachers meet these challenges and function with clarity andpositivity?

• How do they achieve what is expected of them without undue stress andanxiety?

• How do they meet everyday obstacles with resilience, optimism andcoherence?

• How can teachers and students work in times of uncertainty, time scarcityand information overload.

• And, lastly, what can teachers do to deepen their grounding, make a realdifference in the classroom and grow personally and professionally?

If you want answers to these questions to make work and life more manageable, reduce stress and become more productive... take this workshop! It will help you:

The rise of online “reading assistance” resources like Sparknotes and Shmoop, coupled with the increasing pressure on middle and high school students to achieve the highest grade possible and the constant distraction of an on-demand culture, has created a classroom reality far scarier than the creepiest ghouls and goblins Halloween could produce! In this session, participants will be challenged to confront this monster head-on, rethinking literacy approaches to ensure everyone is treated to a great read...and no teachers get tricked!

Word Wondering: Teaching Vocabulary in Meaningful and Powerful Ways (March 6, 2020)The three big questions on teachers’ minds are: Which words do I teach? How to I find the time to explicitly address content-specific “domain” words? Which practices are proven to get learners to transfer word learning to their reading, writing, and speaking? Come discover answers, in a session designed to support high-impact vocabulary instruction. You CAN get away from one-size-fits-all approaches and blend playful word collecting with a systematic plan that ensure all children get the language exposure they need. PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BRING: 2-4 texts they use with students (read aloud, shared reading, or otherwise).

...But What if We Didn’t?: Challenging Assumptions about Literacy and Creating Opportunities for Authentic Learning (February 3, 2020)Educational Absurdity: “Teaching in a way that we know doesn’t work and yet being surprised when we fail.” From a distance, this seems ridiculous, yet it describes many of our most consistent frustrations in the ELA classroom. This session will challenge many of the sacred assumptions about “what we do here” and provide thoughtful, provocative strategies to encourage our students to stop Doing School and start thinking big.

Changing Our Assessment Lens to Uncover Next Steps in Learning (October 10, 2019)When assessment time rolls around, many of us feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tests we need to administer. We pull out our materials, call kids to meet with us, and push through running records as quickly as possible so that we can get back to the matter of teaching. Yet in this rush, we may be missing an opportunity to see these interactions as mega conferences, where we mine, honor, and begin planning goals for our learnings. Join us in a day where we re-imagine our use of assessments, seeing them as the ultimate mining tools to support the learners in our care.

Essential questions to be addressed include: What is school avoidance? What is at the root of the increases in cases of students avoiding school? What are the avenues in which school avoidance can be addressed? What interventions may prove helpful in addressing school avoidant behaviors?
