The 2016 Madeira PianoFest is a musical event

of international relevance. The PianoFest’s five concerts present a

combination of renowned musicians with global career and young stars in

meteoric ascent. This year the event is dedicated primarily to works for piano four

hands and for two pianos, and is characterized by a wide variety of styles and composers while showcasing various seminal works.

The consummate art of the legend of French pianism, Pascal Rogé, playing solo and four hands with Ami Hakuno Rogé, celebrating 150 years from the birth of the icon of the French modernism, Érik Satie; the young Russian sisters, Galina and Irina Chistiakova, residing in Italy and Germany, winners of numerous international competitions, representing the famous Moscow piano school; Carles Lama and Sofia Cabruja, the Catalan Steinway artists, presenting a masterwork by Granados (which they performed in January of this year in Carnegie Hall, on the very day of the centenary of its premiere); the amazing Greek sisters, Kiveli and Danae Dörken, resident in Germany, presenting one of the most emblematic works of the Western music history, Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring”; and finally, the great Portuguese pianist Artur Pizarro, applauded by audiences around the world, together with his talented Italian partner, Rinaldo Zhok, presenting a programme entirely dedicated to the music of celebrated Spanish masters – here is a week of resplendent pianism, offering moments of incomparable spiritual experience.

“Mobility in space and time”Over the last few years Mobility and migration have been

one of the major subjects debated in the Centro de Estudos de História do Atlântico (CEHA). Studying the multiple existing migration processes is decisive for the identity’s reconfiguration and for the dialogue about the social, cultural and political dynamics which mark the Portuguese society, particularly the islands’ one.

On the 10th and 11th of November, the CEHA hosts a conference “Mobility in space and time”, assembling experts from various fields in a wide-ranging dialogue on this subject. This year stand out the studies around Brazil, as a preferable migrant destination for Madeiran people.

Quinta das Cruzes is one of the largest “quintas“ with historic tradition in the bay of Funchal, linked to the family of the first Donatory Captain, who have worked in the late fifteenth, early sixteenth century. A small building, started by Joao Goncalves Zarco (1425-1467?), was increased by his son João Gonçalves da Câmara. This house remained in the family until the mid seventeenth century, moving through marriage alliances, to the Lomelino family until the late nineteenth century.
