Topic Work w/c 22.06.20

Our topic work this week will, again, be linked to History, and our topic is:

The 1960s

The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long.

Last week, we looked at what life was like for people who lived in Britain

during the 1960s and thought about how it is different to our lives now. This

week, we will look at some important events which happened during the

1960s.

Like last week, each day, you will be given an introduction to a topic and a

chance to work on some historical skills. You will also be given a more creative

activity to do.

The work for the WHOLE WEEK is on this document – scroll down to find the

right day.

Monday 22nd June

Today, our important event is: The Men’s Football World Cup. This happened

in 1966.

Introduction

In 1966, the men’s football World Cup

tournament was held in England. This was

very exciting as it had never been held in

England before. England reached the final

where they played West Germany. West

Germany scored first, and it seemed like

England were going to lose. However,

they fought back and eventually won 4-2.

They were then awarded the trophy by

the Queen! This is the only time the

men’s football team has ever won the

football World Cup.

You can watch some highlights from the match here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMDuHPvNtgg (FifaTV 1966 World Cup

Final).

While you are watching, talk to an adult about the following:

• What do you notice about the football kit?

• What do you notice about the ball?

• What do you notice about the people in the crowd?

• How do you think it felt to win the World Cup? Why?

• People in Britain still talk about the 1966 World Cup even though lots of

people weren’t alive when England won. Why do you think this is?

Historical Skill

To be familiar with some historical terms.

Look at this key vocabulary and what it means:

• A source is something we use to help us learn about the past.

• We can have primary sources and secondary sources.

• A primary source comes from the past – it was made or written or was

alive when an event happened.

• A secondary source is about the past but it has been made after the

event has happened.

The video you just watched is a primary source. This is because it was made in

the past when the World Cup final was happening.

This is a link to a website for children about the 1966 World Cup:

https://kids.kiddle.co/1966_FIFA_World_Cup.

This is a secondary source because, even though it is about the past, it has

been made after the World Cup has happened.

Read through this information a couple of times before you try the activity as

it is quite tricky! Ask an adult to help explain anything to you that you don’t

understand.

Look at the pictures on the next page. Can you sort these sources about the

1966 men’s football World Cup into primary and secondary sources?

HINT: There are three of each.

Creative Activity

Imagine you were at the World Cup Final in 1966:

• Who did you go with?

• What happened during the match?

• What was the best part for you?

• How did you feel when England won?

Write a diary entry for the day of the match. Use the questions above to help

you decide what to write. Add a picture of your favourite moment at the end.

You can use extra paper if you wish.

Tuesday 23rd June

Today, our important event is: Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have A Dream’ Speech.

This happened in 1963.

Introduction

Martin Luther King believed that everyone in America should be treated

equally whatever the colour of their skin was. In the 1960s, this did not

happen. He made this famous speech during a protest in Washington D.C.

which is the capital city of America.

Here is part of that speech:

Historical Skill

To choose and use sources to help understand the past.

Today, you are going to find out a bit more about Martin Luther King. You can

use the internet, books or maybe ask an adult to help you answer these

questions:

“I have a dream

that my four little

children will one day

live in a nation

where they will not

be judged by the

colour of their

skin.”

Creative Activity

Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have A Dream’ speech was all about what he hoped

would happen in the future. What do you hope will happen in the future?

Draw a picture in the thought cloud on the next page. If you would like to, you

can write a few sentences to explain what is in your thought cloud.

Wednesday 24th June

Today, our important event is: The First Human in Space. This happened in

1961.

Introduction

We have already learned about Neil Armstrong. He was the first man to walk

on the moon in 1969. However, before this happened, other people went into

space. The first man to do this was called Yuri Gagarin.

Watch this video to find out more about Yuri Gagarin’s mission in space:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iMa03BApcQ (Yuri Gagarin, First Human

in Space).

Historical Skill

To find answers to questions using primary sources.

Here are photographs of Yuri Gagarin and his rocket. They are primary

sources:

Page 10: The 1960s - riverside.southwark.sch.uk · Today, our important event is: The Men’s Football World Cup. This happened in 1966. Introduction In 1966, the mens football World up tournament

Use the pictures to answer these questions:

1. What colour was Yuri Gagarin’s space suit?

________________________________________________________________

2. What happens just before a rocket launches into space? HINT: Look at

the bottom of the picture.

________________________________________________________________

3. What do you think the weather was like on the day Yuri Gagarin went to

space?

________________________________________________________________

4. How do you think Yuri Gagarin felt about being the first man in space?

________________________________________________________________

Can you think of your own question which you could answer by using these

pictures? Write it down and ask someone else to use the pictures to answer

your question.

Creative Activity

Yuri Gagarin’s rocket was very carefully designed. Have a go at drawing or

making your own rocket. You can use this video to help:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/makes/something-special-make-a-rocket-

with-justin (CBeebies Make A Rocket With Justin).

You may have already done this as part of your home learning earlier this year.

If so, why don’t you design an alien spacecraft which might meet the rocket in

space? Don’t forget to take photos and send them to us!

Thursday 25th June

Today, our important event is: The First Episode of Doctor Who. This

happened in 1963.

Introduction

The very first episode of the television show ‘Doctor Who’ was broadcast in

1963. The programme is about a ‘Time Lord’ which is an alien that looks like a

human. This Time Lord is called ‘the Doctor’ and they can travel anywhere in

time or space. The programme is still being made now which shows how

popular it is. These are all the actors who have ever played the Time Lord:

What is the same about each Doctor?

What is different about each Doctor?

Which Doctor is your favourite? Why?

Page 12: The 1960s - riverside.southwark.sch.uk · Today, our important event is: The Men’s Football World Cup. This happened in 1966. Introduction In 1966, the mens football World up tournament

Historical Skill

To place significant events in order on a timeline.

As the Doctor can travel anywhere in time and space, let’s help out by putting

some historical events in order. Most of these are things we have mentioned

in the last 2 weeks. Cut them out and stick them in the right order. HINT: Look

at the last 2 numbers of the dates to help you.

Creative Activity

The Doctor travels through time and space in the T.A.R.D.I.S. which looks like

this:

Imagine you are in the T.A.R.D.I.S. Go on a journey through the 1960s. Stop in

each year and act out one of the big events you stuck on your timeline in your

Historical Skills activity. If you prefer, you could make a freeze frame of each

event.

Where else could you go in the T.A.R.D.I.S.? Why don’t you act this out as

well?

Friday 26th June

Friday is normally choosing time, so here are some ideas for activities

linked to our History this week which you could do with your Friday

afternoon. These activities are the same as last week:

1. Check and see if there are any activities from this week which you

have not completed, especially those which involve making or

designing something.

2. Teach yourself some 1960s dance moves by using this video:

https://vimeo.com/204336221. Perhaps you could use them to

make up a dance to a Beatles song.

3. Find some 1960s toys in your house and play with them – remember

that Barbie, Hot Wheels and Lego were all released in the 1960s.

Maybe you could find some toys that are similar to these to play

with. Watch Thursday’s video last week on the most popular toys in

the 1960s to remind yourself of what they were.

4. Ask an adult if you can make a 1960s-themed meal or cake. There

are some ideas here: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/food-

recipes/g26899440/50s-60s-nostalgia-foods/.

5. Enjoy some time in the sunshine, if you can! Children would play

outside a lot during the 1960s, so why don’t you do it too? Maybe

you could pretend you are playing in the 1966 men’s football World

Cup Final. Remember to stay safe if you do.

Have a lovely weekend and well done for all your hard work this week!
