Timeflies!TheAssociationhostedits21stAnnualGolfTournamentonJune20atJointBaseAndrews.Thisisthethirdyearwehaveusedbothcoursesforthetournament.IwouldliketothankourGolfTourna-mentCommitteeChairman,Mr.JackTaylor,Co-ChairmanMSgtCharlesMontgomery,theBoardmembers,andeveryonethatassistedinorga-nizingandconductingthissuccessfulevent.Also,aspecialthankstoallofoursponsorsandentrantsfortheirgeneroussupportoftheAssocia-tion.AfullarticleontheGolfTournamentappearsinthenewsletteron(page5).

Asinyearspast,thecompetitionfor1600CommunicationsAssociationScholarshipsin2014wasstrong,withanexcellentpoolofapplications.Theselectioncommitteehadthedifficulttaskofdecidingamonganumberofworthyapplicants.Afterscreeningforeligibility,allapplicationswereevaluatedintenareas--academicachievement,leadership,characterandcommitment,extracurricularactivities,qualityofthewrittenessay,qualityandcompletenessoftheapplication,potentialforacademicsuccess,careerpotential,financialplan-ning,andevidenceofresponsiblecitizenship.Afterthoroughevaluationofalltheapplications,theCommitteeselectedthreeoftheapplicantsforscholarshipawards.

WHCA Open House & 1600 Communications Association Shrimp Feast
OnJune21,2014,membersofthe1600CommunicationsAssociation,alongwithactivedutyandcivilianmembersofWHCA,hostedtheannualShrimpFeastandWHCAOpenHouse.Attendanceatthisyear’seventwaslightcomparedtopreviousyears,butthosepresentenjoyedthemselvestothefullest.SpecialguestsincludedformerWHCACommandersColonelLawrenceSchumannUSA,(ret),ColonelThomasJ,HawesUSA(ret),andColonelMichaelB.BlackUSAF(ret).AlsoinattendancewasformerCampDavidCommander,BrigadierGeneralTimothyLake,USA(ret).
Thethemeofthisyear’seventwastheWHCAfamily.ColonelDonovanRoutsis,theWHCACommander,begantheeventbywelcomingapproximately200WHCAmembers,pastandpresent,andtheirfamilies.The1600AssociationPresident,Mr.DannyYoung,thenbroughteveryoneuptodateonthemostrecentactivitiesofthe1600Association.All,regardlessofageenjoyedthemanyactivities,includingstaticdisplaysofpastandcurrentcommunicationsequipment.ChildrenwereabletoexperienceadayinthelifeofaWHCAmember,includingloadingandoffloadingpalletsaswellasparticipatinginaphysicaltrainingsession.
TheeventconcludedwiththeWHCACommanderhavingpresentandformermemberstellstoriesfromthepast(fromtheirexperiencesontripsites).
ThedayculminatedwiththeShrimpFeast,whichincludedsteamedshrimp,beefbrisket,pulledpork,hotdogsandnumeroussides.SeveralgenerationsofWHCAmembersspenttimetogether,enjoyingthefoodandsharingstories.AspecialthankstotheWHCAOpenHouseCommittee,whosegreatsupportmadethiseventpossible.Welookforwardtoseeingeveryoneatourfutureevents!

2014 Golf Tournament Highlights
The21stAnnual1600CommunicationsAssociationGolftournamentwasheldattheCoursesatAndrewsAFB,on20June.Becauseoftheheavydemand,weonceagainwereabletousetwocoursesandhad155golfersoutfortheday.Playmovedquickly,asonlyafewholesweredouble-stacked,andtheweathercooperatedwithus.
Ourwinnersarelistedelsewhereinthisnewsletter,asareourverygeneroussponsors,whosesup-porthelpedustoraise$7,679tobeaddedtotheScholarship/WoundedWarriorsFund.Additionally,formerWHCACommanderColonelMichaelBlack,USAF(ret)wonthe50/50raffleanddonatedhiswinningsbacktothefund($613!).Finally,therafflefortheDavidMustyPuttersbroughtin$640.Ournetincomeforthedaywas$8,932.
WewerehonoredbythepresenceofColonelDonovanRoutsis,thecurrentWHCACommander,aswellasColonelMichaelBlack,USAF(ret)andColonelThomasHawes,USA(ret).
Participantsthisyearincluded18activedutymilitarymembers,downabitbecauseoftheheavytravelschedule.Wewerealsopleasantlysurprisedwhenonefoursomechecked-inwithOmarosaMaigault,formerlyofNBC’sfirstseasonofThe Apprentice!
Thankstoournumerousvolunteers,whichincludedanumberofWHCAfolks,wewereabletopro-videapositivegolfingexperienceandanenjoyableafternoon.WHCAvolunteerswereledbyourprimarycontacts,MSgtCharlesMontgomeryandSSGJacobBridges,whodidaterrificjobgettingthewordouttotheWHCAstaffandenlistingsupport.Theyalsoassistedwiththeregistration.
OthervolunteersincludedBillQuevy,MichaelMilward,andJasonZisaruk,andEllenFloydfromAT&T,andJeanneTaylor,photographer(SouthCourseandgeneraleventphotos).
WeespeciallywouldliketothankBobOhm,thepreviousTournamentCoordinatorformanyyears.Hisknowledgeandexperiencewerekeyinhelpingensureasuccessfultournament.Bobprovidedacompletetutorialoneveryfacetoftheprocess,whichprovedinvaluableasthedateofthetourna-mentgrewcloser.ItisthededicatedvolunteerslikeBobOhmthatallowtheAssociationtocontinuetoputoneventssuchasthegolftournamentandShrimpFeast.Thanksagain,Bob,forallofyouryearsofdedicationtotheAssociationandthistournament,especially.
