Sam JAMES

Guardian Oil on Canvas

30.5 x 30.5cm

I'm a contemporary figurative painter working primarily with

acrylics and oil on canvas. My preferred method of working is to

draw and paint from life, where my focus is on capturing in paint

the effects of light and colour within a scene before me at a

particular point in time. I focus on subjects close to my immediate

environment which include landscape, still life and portraits. I also enjoy utilising the everyday and

overlooked in my work in an effort to recognise the beauty present within our world and to portray

the extraordinary that exists within the ordinary. I also try to be playful and maybe a little bit irreverent

in my work as I think there’s already too much to worry about in the world!! I am influenced in part

by where I live, pop culture and by the work of artists I admire.

Lynne BOLADERAS

Above Our Camp

Tjingkulatjatjarra , Karlamilyi NP En plein air Watercolour

60 x 30cm (Framed 76 x 47cm)

The profound influence of living and working in the desert in Western Australia developed

my interest in the ancient landforms and inland flora that feature in my work. From being

involved with isolated sheep stations in the rangelands, employment as a landscaper on a

gold mine extended my contacts and I was able to develop my arts practice during that

time.

I continually return to the red dirt country for solitude and the expanse of the inland skies.

Travelling in remote areas of Australia, observations and drawings fill journals which are

referred to in the studio to develop mixed media works. As we camp in a tent there are

limits to the range of materials I can carry, which enables a sense of freedom from

possessions. I paint “en plein air” with oils and watercolours.

Looking out across the point you could see the lines of swell stacked all

the way to the horizon. As each wave hit the shallow ledge it glowed green and gold with the

afternoon light. The hills to my right glowing bright red over the camp as the sun sets. I would have

been 14 years old, my dads old Minolta film camera clutched firmly in hand- at that moment I knew

exactly what I wanted to do. Since then I've been completely obsessed with chasing dynamic light,

each photo having the ability to tell its own story.

25 years later and I have had the privilege to work along side some of my peers as a senior staff

photographer at Australian Surfing Life, and widely published in many international magazines. I am

humbled to have travelled the world working with some amazing creatives and brands such as

Quicksilver, Casio watches, Westsuits, Landcorp, Gypsea Swimwear, Sierra Nevada, Schick, Super

Jonathon THWAITES

Untitled Sculpture

Jonathon explores the inner universe outwardly using found materials to

mimic patterns of natural environments. He externalises the internal,

bringing the soul (as pattern) as it is manifest in the material world, to

focus to elucidate the inner soulfulness of our material world.

He is interested in pattern. Our minds operate as pattern recognition systems. The vast quantity of

detail we perceive in our material world, is by nature overwhelming for our minds to accommodate.

By necessity and without consciousness, in most cases, the vast detail is converted to more

manageable patterns, which inherently contain less data. These approximations and overviews are

then available for our thought processes. To be aware of the pattern process is to be aware of the

limitations of perception. The approximations provide the space for the creative impulse, to go

beyond the perceived material reality, to realise there is no absolute reality but that it is all

approximation.

W1

Tripe.Iscariot

2020 “Brawn”

Chardonnay

1.5L Magnum

Tripe.Iscariot started as an experiment in flavour, texture and style. 7

years later it has been refined into a dedication to intensity in flavour,

fineness in texture, and distinction in style. I strive to achieve this set of

ideals by only picking the best fruit possible for my wines, staying my

hand when the fruit needs me to listen, and intervening when the fruit

needs to listen to me. As a winemaker in Margaret River I have a

responsibility to ensure that every bottle of wine that I put that name

onto is of the highest quality, thus I live as winemaker by one rule alone:

I only make wines that I love to drink.’ Remi Guise, tripe Iscariot

Fruit is hand-picked, with 25% kept as whole bunches submerged

under unclarified juice extracted from the other 75%, which were whole

bunch pressed. Towards the end of the fermentation the wine was

removed, and the whole bunches pressed and combined with the rest

of the ferment. The wine then finished fermentation in French oak

barriques, 40% of which were new. After 9 months in oak with

occasional battonage the barrels are blended, clarified and bottled.

W2

Gant & Co

2020 Malbec

1.5L Magnum

Cool climate wines from an idyllic site in Karridale in the south of

Margaret River. One of the most southern vineyards in the region,

producing fresh, elegant styles with balanced acidity and moreish

drinkability. Just 15km north of the cooling influence of the Southern

Ocean, these wines are lovingly grown with timely intervention. The

vineyard has always been farmed holistically, with minimal sprays and

soil health a primary focus, and timely intervention the key to success.

In recent years, changes to some practices and the timing of them (e.g.

cane pruning, leaf plucking) has led to further improvements in fruit

quality and sustainability. The continued pursuit of best practice to

improve vine health is at the heart of their quest to grow wines that

reflect the purity and energy of this beautiful site. The resulting wines

are produced with a light touch. A simple, sensitive approach (e.g.

gentle handling, indigenous fermentation, ‘sur lie’ maturation) guided

by timely intervention.

Spur pruned. Shoot and fruit thinned. Leaf plucked. One bunch per

shoot. 91% Malbec (Block 9) 8% Cabernet Sauvignon (Block 8). 15

months sur lie in barrique. Lusty and spicy. Margaret River secret sauce.

Mr Barval

2018 Cabernet

Sauvignon Merlot

1.5L Magnum

We are aiming to produce the wines in a very traditional, old world

manner to allow for their own individual voices to be heard most

clearly, not to be the bearers of a heavy winery fingerprint. Purity of

fruit, balance, elegance and delicacy. These are all focus points for our

production.’ Rob Gherardi, Mr Barval

A real classic ‘Margaret River’ summer. Plenty of warm, sunny days,

never getting too hot, with characteristically cool, fresh evenings. This

led to a long and slow maturation of the grapes which provided them

with the greatest opportunity to develop a wider diversity of flavour

and aroma compounds.

This is a classic Margaret River Cabernet Merlot speaking clearly of its

strong connection with the famed Bordeaux wines of France which

were the original inspiration for planting vines in our region. Full bodied

but not heavy, rich and powerful but not overbearing, amazing

complexity with a vast array of flavours but with wonderful balance,

poise and softness, it is a Cabernet for all palates. Whilst it is still in the

midst of youthful exuberance the wine is still wonderful to drink now.

However, time in the cellar will only be of benefit. This wine has the

balance and structure to allow for cellaring for 25+ years.

Rosily Vineyard

2015 Reserve

Cabernet

Sauvignon

2 x 750mL

Rosily Vineyard is dedicated to making wines of excellence that truly

reflect the unique Margaret River environment from which they are

derived. Established in 1994, Rosily’s single vineyard is certified

organic, as are their hand crafted, award winning, limited production

wines.

Aromas of blackcurrant with a meaty, gamey influence. Further

complexity comes with the dried herbs and spicy black olive. The palate

shows some quality oak where it spent two years in a mix of 40% new

and 60% one-year-old French oak. Still tightly held, but with

tremendous potential in the cellar.’ 95 points – Ray Jordan, WA Wine

Guide 2019

“Rosily often slips under the radar, yet when you stack up its show

success and quality of the wines, you have to ask why”, Ray Jordan.

Vasse Felix

2018 Cabernet

Sauvignon

1.5L Magnum

Established in 1967 by regional pioneer Dr Tom Cullity, Vasse Felix is

Margaret River's founding wine estate. Unrivalled experience as a

vigneron in Margaret River 'wine paradise,' with its pristine isolation,

ancient lands and twin oceans has led Vasse Felix to adopt organic

principles across its four vineyards. This builds upon the Estate’s

reputation for minimal intervention and ‘small batch’ winemaking, as

an intuitive progression to achieve Dr Tom Cullity’s original aim, ‘to

make the best possible wine’. Everyone is welcome to visit the

renowned Vasse Felix Estate, which offers a range of experiences to

immerse oneself in Margaret River’s wine, food, culture and history.

2018 vintage experienced cooler than average conditions with the reds

ripening slowly and gently through a dry Autumn ensuring fully

developed tannins and a slightly riper and fleshier fruit profile than

2017.

A loaded and dense perfume of cassis, liquorice and strawberry sorbet

is deepened by ocean scents of dried shells and crayfish bisque.

Ironstone rock brings earthy notes which give way to dried rose petal

and vanilla butter intrigue. As for the palate, so intense, tight, lengthy

and exciting. A fresh and succulent entry pulls inward with firm, linear

tannins driving the flavours long. Fresh raspberry, wood spice, vanilla

and peanut complexities linger.

W6

Leeuwin Estate

2016 “Art Series”

Cabernet

Sauvignon

1.5L Magnum

Family owned, Leeuwin Estate, one of the five founding wineries of the

region, is under the direction of two generations who work with a team

of highly skilled winemakers to consistently produce wines ranking

alongside the world’s finest.

2016 was one of the best all round vintages Leeuwin Estate has seen,

with Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon standout varieties.

Cabernet sauvignon fruit was picked with ripe skin and seed tannins

plus crunchy seeds.

Deep, dark and black core of fruit centred upon currants, blueberries,

dark cherries and cassis. Black cardamom, nutmeg, tobacco, cumin and

well-integrated oak surround and support an incredibly rich dense

nose. Impressive weight and texture are at the forefront, powerfully

fruited in the black and blue fruit spectrum combine with cacao,

roasted coffee bean and anise. The length is infinite and defined by

bright acidity, powder-like tannins and diligent oak.

Domaine

Naturaliste

2014 ‘Rebus’

Cabernet

Sauvignon

2x 1.5L Magnum

After nearly three decades working closely with producers in Margaret

River, renowned winemaker Bruce Dukes launched Domaine

Naturaliste – his own range of highly acclaimed wines in 2012. An

homage to the region where he honed his craft, Domaine Naturaliste

is a space for Bruce to demonstrate his mastery of the classic Margaret

River varietals. Beginning with a deep understanding of soils and

sustainable farming practices, it is Bruce’s belief that a holistic approach

reaps the greatest rewards, both for the wine and the environment.

‘It is our responsibility to sustainably conduct agriculture and

winemaking, while respecting the related ecosystems, with the final

objective of leaving the land in better health for the next generation.’

Bruce Dukes, Domaine Naturaliste

Rebus Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine crafted to stay true to its heritage

as an icon of the Margaret River region. Fragrant, complex aromas of

cherry and mulberry are presented on a framework of fine tannins

giving a decadent, silky texture and lingering finish. A combination of

concentration, refinement and elegance

W8

Xanadu

2016 Cabernet

Sauvignon

(Jimmy Watson

winner)

1.5L Magnum

Xanadu has a long history of crafting outstanding wines that embody

all the region has to offer. One of the region’s first vineyards

established in 1977 by Dr John Lagan, Xanadu is now one of the

country’s most acclaimed wineries having been awarded 100 Trophies

on the Australian wine show circuit since 2007. This includes the Best

Cabernet Trophy at the National Wine Show of Australia for the last 7

years in a row, along with the 2018 Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy

for the 2016 Xanadu Cabernet Sauvignon.

Aromas of blackcurrants, mulberries and Satsuma plums, with lovely

floral elements and hints of mocha chocolate, cinnamon and spice.

Full-bodied yet refined, the lively palate offers a core of inky forest

fruits, boysenberries and blackcurrant pastilles framed by understated

cedar/spicy oak. The wine has a wonderful density, is well structured

and layered with plump, jubey fruits, ripe tannins and a lingering

Cabernet finish.

I have enjoyed art ever since I can remember, giving drawings away as a gift

to family and friends was something I have done from a young age. I have

studied fine arts on and off throughout my life, but I am mainly self-taught.

Since moving to Margaret River in 2010 I have taken the time to harness my

skills. My works are significant to the surrounding landscapes I have seen through my life or moments

that relate to a feeling of being free and alive. Staying present in the moment is difficult to maintain

at times and I like to focus on the important things in life - looking after yourself mentally and

physically. She explores beauty through nature, narrative and movement and creates works on a

variety of scales using acrylics, inks, charcoal and watercolours. She has developed a free flow process

with acrylics of the landscape. “I will forever be searching for a new way to express my feelings,

I would describe my work as pieces that endeavour to help the

observer 'feel' my art in every sense of the word.

I try to open the soul's yearning for a warm blast of dazzling light and

shape through my use of colour and texture; textures that make the

viewer want to touch the canvas. This is the emotional connection I have while painting and the very

same relationship I want others to have when they experience my work. Born in Subiaco Western

Australia, Rob Forlani works predominantly in the medium of painting but also includes large scale

Sue BRIGGS

Tidal Float 1, 2, 3 Acrylic on canvas

I graduated as predominantly an abstract painter my first time at Art School in

1978. I moved to Margaret River with my then husband in 1980 and whilst

raising a family I developed an interest in painting the landscape around me.

I've always loved the meeting of ocean and sky, land and water and all the

changes that happen in between. I painted countless scenes of favourite

stretches of coastline, vineyards, and private gardens around Margaret River.

Most of these were sold through Yallingup and Gunyulgup Galleries.

In the year 2000, I moved up to Perth to go back to university and completed a Master of Creative

Arts in 2003. In between working 'real' jobs, I managed to exhibit my work in several solo shows as

well as numerous group exhibitions.

Since returning to Margaret River permanently 2 years ago, I've built another studio and spend most

of my time in there painting or out at the coast gazing at cloud formations and watching the weather.

All those natural elements are influences in my work, but it's only now that I realise those years of

discipline at University are giving my abstract landscapes a structure and depth that previously had

eluded me.

I work with acrylics, gouache, pastel, mixed media and oils as well as painting wooden beads to make

neck pieces and earrings. COMMENDED BY JUDGES 2021.… Great balance in colour and shape. Beautiful representation of the local area. Works well as a triptych.

Artworks prior to COVID-19 depict scene-scapes of her travels in Morocco, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka

and European countries (2012-2019). With overseas travels on pause, more recent artworks feature

Western Australian imagery ranging from coastal and forest scenes of the South West to the wild and

expansive Pilbara (2020-2021).

Alice is able to beautifully recreate the places and people that have touched our hearts, delivering

works of serenity and reflection in a whirl of colour. Personalised commissions of people, places or

abstract colour themes are available by request.

At the age of 18, she began a painting workshop with Eleonora Perez Curto.

In 2009 she did the Foundation Course at Central Saint Martins (CSM), London, for which she had

been preparing with an art and design tutor for a year and a half. At SCM she decided she will fully

dedicate to paint.

In 2010 she returned to Argentina and did the first year at Public Art University: IUNA (Instituto

Universitario Nacional de Arte) , Argentina. She was incorporated to Perez Curto’s workshop and

started studying at Roux Art School with Pablo Nosce, where she took part in the annual exhibition.

Alejandra Roux saw her artwork at the exhibition and invited her to participate at the next year course

for young artists. She believed the only way to learn how to paint was painting hours. Back in

Argentina, she began painting murals and doing alive painting in events, willing to share in public the

magic that happens inside her workshop. She was asked for plenty of particular orders. And for the

next two years she began to work with the artist Juan Danna as his assistant doing murals.

In 2015 her name DELMONT was created. In 2015 she started venturing in mixmedia trying to put her

art experience together: traditional oil painting with murals and synthetic paint. The next year, she got

back to study with Alejandra Roux, where she was able to get the synthesis of mixmedia and find the

comprehension of her own language.

Reaching Out Acrylic on Canvas

76 x 103cm

Having grown up in Germany, my husband and I moved to Australia with

our two young children 19 years ago. The landscape here is so unique and

dramatically different than in Germany, and has been a constant source of

inspiration for me, even before I started painting. I started painting in 2015

as a creative outlet. I had never formally painted before, but as my children

were growing up and becoming independent I realised that it was time for me too, to reconnect with

myself and explore my own passions. I am inspired by the intense colours of the land, trees, and ocean,

and so letting it out on the canvas has been very therapeutic for me.

I work as a nurse, which can be very demanding. Painting has allowed me to explore another side of

myself, slow down, and to connect with nature in a very intimate and special way. I especially love the

ability to take what is real, and make it more fantastical, or abstract, using colour. I have participated

in various workshops over the years, but my "style" evolves from canvas to canvas. I don't focus on

formal techniques or even have much of a particular vision for the end result, I prefer to let the colour

take over and let the painting come to life in its own way.

Discovering Boranup Limited Edition Print 4/25

Stretched canvas with a timber frame

165 x 49cm including frame

Through my artwork I portray the natural world of Western Australia. My art pays tribute to, and

celebrates the living world that nurtures my creativity.

This world sustains my creative impulse, it imbues me with joy and I feel very much part of it, not

separate, but intimately connected. My art is about this connection.

The abstract visual landscapes of my work are location, date and time specific. They capture the living

mood of the place, a vignette, a moment in time and place.

The aim is to bring the viewer into that moment, place, with all its wonderful nuances, light, plants,

animals, landscape - to feel that place, a memory hidden in consciousness.

On the Edge Acrylic on canvas

Through my mother, Rua Osborne, art has been in my life as long as I can

remember. She was artistic in everything she did and painted all her life. She

was a partner in Gallery A in Sydney in the 60’s and & 70’s and a great

collector,so our home was always full of wild and wonderful cutting edge contemporary art. Mum

and my sister were the artists in the family-I was the musician. I didn’t begin to paint until 1997 when

I joined artist friends on a painting trip to Broome. It was during this trip–watching and learning and

gently guided–that I got the first taste of the wonderful and surprising place that artists go to; where

self is lost and time loses its edges. I have chased this ever since. Plus, every now and then, I am

pleasantly surprised by my painting. Over the years I have had guidance from artist and teacher Peter

Scott and have done several art units at TAFE.

My relationship with the arts started in the early 1980s. Influenced by

traveling parents, the creativity and cultural awareness that existed in skate boarding’s early days,

music with a DIY philosophy and a love of exploring landscapes. I was fortunate to grow up on the

fringes of towns and cities, in the spaces where the built existed alongside the “Bush”. From northern

Queensland’s tropical jungles to Western Australian swamps and coastal dunes, I was blessed and

informed by the freedoms of those times. Seeking to afford my children the same rites of passage,

I shifted to the southwest in the late 1990s. After the twenty plus years of being here then to watch

their spaces change. I can but fathom how those changes would be felt if one had a cultural

relationship with the land longer than 250 odd years. I am enriched & humbled by the human desire

to create.

beginning of my passion and love affair with the art. Since then I have been contracted to shoot

My challenge this year is to not purchase any fabric and restrict myself to what I have on hand. Each

I paint in a spontaneous way depending on the mood and sensations that happen at the time. My

During the last 2 years, I have been inspired by a road trip to the north of Western Australia as well

important feature of my art. I constantly collect and recycle vehicle hubcaps transforming them into

While her artistic journey has been transpiring since a young age, it has only been in the last four

years that she has been able to dedicate some time to her passion. A mother of two small boys, this

has been no easy task. A Marine Biologist and Naturalist as well as passionate ocean and outdoors

enthusiast, Misty takes her inspiration from nature and patterns in nature and her pieces aim to

showcase the brilliance and beauty of nature. Working with vibrant acrylic paints and rich inks, her

works continue to evolve and embrace many forms of media. Her recent series of works evince the

unique and uninhibited beauty of serene underwater creatures such as turtles, squid and sea

dragons. Misty also creates elaborate layered patterned abstract pieces that embody the patterns,

colours and depths of the underwater world in which the viewer is invited to imagine colourful reef

systems, corals, anemones and the relationship with water movement and light refraction.

This piece titled “Ascension” is from the series “Chelonioidea - Journey of the Sea Turtle”. After

working for the past 15 years with these wondrous creatures and observing their strength, resilience

and consummate gentle nature, I have a strong respect and devotion for the conservation of these

extraordinary beasts. To make it into the world is near on impossible, but to survive long enough to

Britta SORENSON

Flow Woven fashion waste on recycled canvas stretcher

Britta Sorensen is a 4th generation artist who started her life in the bi-

cultural region of Northern Germany/Denmark. Scandinavian aesthetics

and German clarity and functionality strongly permeate her work. From

a very young age Britta showed an interest in traditional women’s skills

and learned many techniques that today form the basis of her artwork.

Having lived in pristine Margaret River, Western Australia for the last 23 years, Britta feels a growing

frustration about the world being swamped with meaningless, cheap Deco-wares and endless short-

lived products without a story. Deeply concerned about the world’s ever-growing addiction to

consumer goods, she made it her mission to work with recycled, reinvented and found materials

only. Everything she uses to make her objects and interactive installations has had a previous life, a

story that adds layers of depth and shadow to her work.

Her aim is to make the viewer see, think, feel, experience and interact in unconventional ways – not

by shocking, but by coaxing, surprising and instigating communication and exploration. She likes to

evoke memories, employ the senses, tickle the child in the viewer, open their eyes to different

perspectives – and therewith to new possibilities.

Sea Glass Acrylic

76 x 76cm

Carol produces abstract art: unpretentious, expressive, intuitive,

gestural, bold, and bright. Carol’s art practice is one of constant

exploration and experimentation. Sometimes political - her voice is

heard in some of her pieces e.g., Filling in the Silences, Walk in My

Shoes, We are Stronger When We Stand Together, (Don’t Fall) Between the Cracks….

Recently Carol has been exploring memories – of place, of time, that a colour, a fabric…a pattern, a

motif reawakens. Sometimes the memory is clear but generally it is gauzy and fleeting, a ghostly

voice whispering “remember me?”

Currently Carol is exploring abstract landscapes inspired by her memories of her travels around

Western Australia, next week…the canvas is blank and ready for more exploration – of mediums,

colours, styles. Most works are on canvas, mostly acrylic, always textural and bright.

Recently Carol’s abstract piece “Filling in the Silences” was acquired by the City of Belmont WA for

their collection.

Carol lives in the beautiful Margaret River region of Western Australia. She has a degree in Social

“Nothing Gold Can Stay”…Robert Frost Acrylic

I have an appreciation for simpler times. My subject is caught in the

kitchen, in the backyard, on the clothesline: everyday events and objects that are captured being

beautiful... Ode to the ordinary. Aprons tied and eggs in hand, verandahs with chooks and children,

a line of washing; an indication of the inhabitants of humble dwellings.

I am a collector of stories and images that tell stories. My work is largely narrative and rarely a

landscape without a prominent human figure. I look for pattern and repetition in nature and

bonds between people. I get excited about the afternoons golden light and the way it makes

everything alive and beautiful. I see nature as a declaration of God’s glory and work to produce a

reflection of this in what I write, make paint and draw.

Pauline ALFERINK

Luscious Glazed earthenware ceramic body pot

220×340mm

Pauline Alferink really enjoys the tactile and earthly nature of clay and

creating pieces that are both colourful and functional. She makes free form

sculptural garden pots as well as throwing unique hand painted items for the

table. She takes inspiration from nature around her and experiments with

various textures and glazes. I love making pieces that are functional. The Body

Pot can be used as a plant pot, to display an arrangement of flowers or use as a domestic

goddess in your kitchen!

Jo ALFERINK

She is very lucky now to have her own little studio on her property near

Witchcliffe, where she divides her time working in a variety of mediums including mosaics,

soapstone sculptures, and acrylic paint on plant pots, gourds and the occasional canvas.

My love of gardening and nature are the main sources of my creative inspiration, and I love

combining the two. It gives me great pleasure creating bright, colourful fun pieces that bring a

splash of joy to others.
