THE 12TH ANNUAL RESIDENCY CONCERT
Orchestra Long Island
Orchestra Long Island (OLI) is a professional symphony orchestra that was established in 2017. OLI was founded by the dedicated professional musicians and Music Director and Conductor David Stewart Wiley of the former Long Island Philharmonic, along with a group of forward-thinking educators and professionals deeply connected to Long Island. The founding members of OLI were motivated by the belief that it is important for Long Island to continue to have its own professional orchestra. Orchestra Long Island fills the demonstrated need for classical music, free summer parks concerts, and orchestra education programs vital to culturally vibrant Long Island communities. The mission of Orchestra Long Island is to engage and inspire people of all ages and to enhance the cultural vitality and quality of life of Long Island through great music. OLI programs are performed at the highest level of artistic excellence, and through music education programs for people of all ages, OLI will foster creativity and inspire a lifelong enjoyment of music. Orchestra Long Island continues the proud tradition of performing summer parks concerts each year for many thousands of Long Islanders under the direction of Maestro Wiley. The Orchestra intends to present classical and pops concerts as it continues to grow. The Orchestra’s education programs include Performance Partner residency programs, in-school small ensemble performances, and coaching workshops by member of the orchestra. Future education programs will include a young artist competition, master classes, and an array of small ensemble community performances.

Performance Partners
Orchestra Long Island (OLI), in partnership with Nassau Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) and Nassau County school districts, presents a Student Mentorship/In-School* Performance and Instructional Program called Performance Partners. The program consists of OLI musicians instructing, coaching, and mentoring students in a series of workshops, plus a conductor’s rehearsal and a dress rehearsal with the professional musicians, culminating in a public* side-by-side concert led by a professional conductor. This program currently takes place in The Wheatley School and Uniondale High School. This unique mentoring experience is a total commitment for everyone involved – students, teachers, building and district administration, and the OLI professionals. In the video*, you are hearing talented students and professional musicians performing side-by-side, in a remarkable and impactful musical mentoring program. This life-changing orchestra collaboration has brought national attention, receiving a Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award in 2015. Originally conceived as a partnership between Nassau BOCES and the Brooklyn Philharmonic in 1986, the program's orchestral leadership, guided by Nassau BOCES, eventually moved to the New York Virtuosi and then to the Long Island Philharmonic under the direction of Maestro Wiley. When the former LI Philharmonic ceased operation in 2016, the musicians and Maestro Wiley, deeply committed to the program, found a temporary home with the Bronx Arts Ensemble until OLI’s founding. Orchestra Long Island, Nassau BOCES, and Uniondale High School continue to make a deep and lasting impact on our students. Together, we are proud to collaborate on this unique program. *Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s workshops/coachings were held virtually. The concert program was recorded by the students and professional musicians in school and in their homes.

David Stewart Wiley, Conductor Maestro David Stewart Wiley has been an important classical musical presence on Long Island since he became the Music Director and Conductor of the Long Island Philharmonic in 2001. After the Philharmonic closed, Wiley led the dedicated group of musicians and educators who established Orchestra Long Island in 2017, continuing his unfailing commitment to education and outreach on Long Island. Wiley has fostered musical excellence and has nurtured both professional and student musicians. He is dedicated to developing a diverse audience across Long Island. David Stewart Wiley has conducted such distinguished symphonies as Atlanta, Buffalo, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Minnesota, Saint Louis, Oregon, Honolulu, and Utah. Wiley made his Boston Pops debut in May 2019. Music has taken him to dozens of countries including Italy, Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, China, Morocco and others. Wiley has served as Music Director and Conductor of Virginia’s Roanoke Symphony Orchestra since 1996. Under his artistic leadership, the RSO has experienced a remarkable period of artistic growth, expansion and innovation. In 2015, the Roanoke City Council honored him as Roanoke’s Citizen of the Year. He previously served as Assistant Conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Wiley’s energetic and inspiring leadership of the RSO has drawn consistently stellar reviews. The RSO has featured a diverse and impressive list of guest artists and composers, and innovative commissions of new music in various styles. The orchestra has hired over 50 new professional musicians during Wiley’s tenure. The RSO and Wiley received a Distinguished Music Educator Award from Yale University in 2016. Wiley’s efforts to bring classical music to youth in minority communities earned him the Citizen of the Year in the Arts award from the NAACP. As a solo pianist, Wiley first performed with a professional orchestra at age 10. He has played with major orchestras across the United States including Minnesota, Indianapolis, Oregon, Honolulu, and Wheeling, West Virginia, performing major concerti from Baroque to contemporary, often conducting from the piano. He has appeared as both a jazz and classical pianist in Boston's Symphony Hall and in recital and chamber music appearances in the U.S., China, Russia, Romania, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Bulgaria. David Stewart Wiley won the Aspen Conducting Prize, was Assistant Conductor for the Aspen Music Festival, and was awarded a Conducting Fellowship at Tanglewood. Wiley holds a Doctor and Master of Music in Conducting from Indiana University, a degree in Piano Performance with honors from the New England Conservatory of Music, and a degree in religion, summa cum laude, from Tufts University. He is a recipient of the Perry F. Kendig Prize for service to the arts and is a Paul Harris Fellow from Rotary International. He and his wife, Leah Marer Wiley, have a son and a daughter who play cello and violin. The family enjoys travelling, hiking, biking, chess, and making music together.
