Tom McCasland, Dallas Arboretum board member, and his wife, Phyllis McCasland, have been involved with the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden for years, giving their time, talent and resources. As the

McCaslands continued to get involved with the Dallas Arboretum, Phyllis had an idea that she ran by Tom. “About two years ago, I thought about something spectacular for Christmas. It seemed to me that Dallas didn’t have anything grand. The 12 Days of Christmas would be perfect, and the Dallas Arboretum has the space to house it. The exhibit could be educational, telling you about England, the countryside, traditions and more. It would be a perfect thing that Dallas could be known for during Christmas.”The couple approached Mary Brinegar, president and CEO of the Dallas Arboretum, and she loved the idea. “Some of our best ideas come from our supporters, and we appreciate Tom and Phyllis helping us become an even more prominent botanical garden with this remarkable idea and their many years of support.”

Brinegar approached Tommy Bourgeois, props designer for The Dallas Opera, to design the 12 Days exhibit. Tommy sketched his ideas and presented them. At that point, everyone realized that the exhibit would be even more elaborate and showy than what was anticipated.

Unique in the world, this $2 million exhibit will open on the botanical grounds on November 16. Dramatically designed 25-foot-tall gazebos have been made for each day of the popular carol and include life-size Victorian-costumed mannequins, whimsical animals, spectacular lighting and movement – all with accompanying music. The attention to detail is remarkably brilliant.

Building upon the audience appeal of the Chihuly installation – which the Arboretum showcased three years ago, and the infrastructure of outdoor lighting that was created in the garden for it – the Arboretum has conceived and commissioned this gift to the city as Dallas' newest holiday tradition. The 12 Days of Christmas Presenting Sponsor is Amegy Bank of Texas, and its Supporting Sponsor is the Dallas Tourism Public Improvement District.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Christmas celebration was not limited to just one day but was celebrated continually for the 12 days which fall between Christmas Day and Epiphany (the day the Christian

Church celebrates the visit of the Magi, or Three Kings, to see Jesus in the manger in Bethlehem). Also known as the English Twelfth Night Celebrations, this was a time of feasting, celebrating and merry-making. Food was a big part of the celebrations, as people would gather each night for a festive meal followed by singing, dancing and a general evening of good time. In this carol, we see the giving of gifts, references to food items that would have been included in the feasts, and a suggestion of the courting that surely went on between the young, single men and women attending the nightly festivities.

Dating back much farther than most other popular Christmas songs, The Twelve Days of Christmas carol appears to have evolved, over time and cultures, into its current form rather than, like most other songs, being formally composed or written at a specific time in history. Various versions of this carol were sung for two or more centuries before the words were actually recorded and published. Although believed by many to have originated in France, the song is best known in its English version which was published in London in 1780 (with other popular rhymes and games) in a book called Mirth without Mischief. It was a memories-and-forfeits game in which a leader recited a verse, each of the players repeated the verse, the leader added another verse, and so on until one of the players made a mistake. The player who failed to recite the building rhyme correctly had to pay a penalty, which might have been in the form of a kiss or possibly a sweet treat. It is also known as a cumulative song, meaning that each verse is built on top of the previous verses. Each of these 12 verses describes a gift given by “my true love” on one of the 12 days of Christmas, and, with each verse, the gifts become grander as the song progresses – tasty game birds, regal swans, lords and ladies, music and heralding drums – the fundamental theme of feasting and partying is made clear with each and every gift.

Whether the 12 gifts are taken in their literal meaning or rather are believed to be referencing some other symbolic imagery, this ages-old beloved Christmas carol will undoubtedly remain a holiday favorite for years to come. And it is our sincere hope that The 12 Days of Christmas as exhibited here at the Dallas Arboretum will, too, become a cherished holiday tradition with memories that will last a lifetime.

The 12 Daysof Christmas

Dallas’ Newest Holiday Tradition!

Make plans now to start a must-see holiday tradition this year with the Dallas Arboretum’s new, grand and elegant

holiday exhibit, The 12 Days of Christmas. This one-of-a-kind exhibit will

take center stage at its long-awaited unveiling this November and is promised to be like no other holiday display ever seen. Commissioned to bring this beloved Christmas carol to life through custom-built, larger-than-life, three-dimensional gazebos, local artist and props and scenery designer for The Dallas Opera, Tommy Bourgeois, along with Dallas Stage Scenery, are sure to exceed all expectations for finding a favorite holiday tradition with this massive Christmas installation.

Straight from the imaginations and dreams of Tom and Phyllis McCasland, long-time members and devoted supporters of the Dallas Arboretum, The 12 Days of Christmas is a more than $2 million endeavor which has taken more than two years to bring to life. After seeing the initial sketches, Tom McCasland said, “… the exhibit is going to be even more elaborate and showy than what we anticipated.”

The 12 Days of Christmas will feature 25-foot-tall gazebos filled with the “gifts” from the classic Christmas carol. And whether those “gifts” are life-sized Victorian-costumed mannequins (such as dancing ladies and leaping lords) or whimsical feathered friends (hens from France or swimming swans), each one is promised to be “detailed, sparkly and dazzling.” The exhibits also have mechanical components which assist in bringing the characters to an even more life-like state. With walls made of glass, the gazebos will provide guests will that magical feeling similar to holiday window shopping – but rather than an urban street scene, the beauty of the Arboretum’s botanical offerings will set the perfect scene for this holiday outing.

And with special lighting throughout the garden as well as lighting features integral to each of the gazebos, visitors will have an opportunity to experience The 12 Days at Night during special evening openings beginning Sunday, November 16.

DeGolyer House Holiday DecorationsByers’ Choice Ltd. Carolers CollectionDaily • November 26-January 4 • 12-4pm

Christmastime celebrations wouldn’t be complete without the decorating of the DeGolyer House – another holiday tradition for the Dallas Arboretum. What better way to get into the holiday spirit than to experience the stunning interior decorations elaborately planned and placed in this beautiful, historic home. This year’s décor will feature a collection of the Byers’ Choice Ltd. Carolers, which is being generously shared for this annual holiday display by Arboretum members John and Kim Semyan. The Byers’ Carolers were so well-received when displayed a few years ago that we asked for the opportunity to showcase them again. Treasured for the way they represent a simpler time and way of life, hundreds of these treasured figurines will be on display throughout the holiday festival. And with the DeGolyer House lavishly filled with time-honored elements such as tartan plaids, gilded ornaments, and a festive mix of simple burlap and sparkles, guests will truly be immersed in the sights, sounds and traditions of Christmases-past. The DeGolyer House will be open during daytime hours, seven days a week for self-guided tours.
