Keynote I

M2M communication, actuation and coordination challenges in large scale IoT/CPS

Ivan Stojmenovic

School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science University of Ottawa, Canada

Abstract: Existing machine-to-machine (M2M) communications incorporate a central point for gathering information, making decision, and acting. Large scale cyber-physical systems (CPS) may incorporate distributed actuation and in-network processing. Machine-to-machine communication aspects include data dissemination, data aggregation, reporting mechanisms for monitoring, cooperative access. Other related issues that would be explored are modeling, inter-dependency and topology control, and security and privacy. This lecture emphasizes actuation as one of important tools in the future applications of Internet of Things and Cyber Physical Systems architectures. Various existing models for wireless sensor and actuator networks are elaborated. It then concentrates on the network layer issues in wireless sensor and sensor-actuator networks. Coordination between sensors and robots, and robot to robot coordination are then covered with some concrete problem formulations. These include robot dispersion, communication aspects of robot coordination, robot task allocation, and sensor placement and relocation to improve sensing area coverage. Biography: Dr. Ivan Stojmenovic received his Ph.D. degree in mathematics. He held regular and visiting positions in Serbia, Japan, USA, Canada, France, Mexico, Spain, UK (as Chair in Applied Computing at the University of Birmingham), Hong Kong, Brazil, Taiwan, and China, and is Full Professor at the University of Ottawa, Canada and Adjunct Professor at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia. He published over 300 different papers, and edited seven books on wireless, ad hoc, sensor and actuator networks and applied algorithms with Wiley. He is editor of over dozen journals, editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (from January 2010), and founder and editor-in-chief of three journals (MVLSC, IJPEDS and AHSWN). Stojmenovic is one of about 250 computer science researchers with h-index at least 50, has top h-index in Canada for mathematics, and has >11000 citations. He received four best paper awards and the Fast Breaking Paper for October 2003, by Thomson ISI ESI. He is recipient of the Royal Society Research Merit Award, UK. He is Tsinghua 1000 Plan Distinguished Professor (2012-5). He is elected to IEEE Fellow status (Communications Society, class 2008), and is IEEE CS Distinguished Visitor 2010-12. He received Excellence in Research Award of the University of Ottawa 2009. Stojmenovic chaired and/or organized >60 workshops and conferences, and served in >200 program committees. He was program co-chair at IEEE PIMRC 2008, IEEE AINA-07, IEEE MASS-04&07, EUC-05&08-10, AdHocNow08, IFIP WSAN08, WONS-05, MSN-05&06, ISPA-05&07, founded workshop series at IEEE MASS, ICDCS, DCOSS, WoWMoM, ACM Mobihoc, IEEE/ACM CPSCom, FCST, MSN, and is/was Workshop Chair at IEEE INFOCOM 2011, IEEE MASS-09, ACM Mobihoc-07&08.

Keynote II

Exploring Wireless Data Center Fabric Using Free-Space Optics

Samir R. Das

Computer Science Department Stony Brook University, SUNY, USA

Abstract: Conventional data center network designs offer extreme cost vs. performance tradeoffs — simple leaf-spine networks are cost-effective but oversubscribed, while “fat tree”-like solutions offer good worst-case performance but are expensive. Recent results have made a promising case for augmenting an oversubscribed network with reconfigurable inter-rack wireless or optical links. Inspired by the promise of reconfigurability, this talk will describe an inter-rack network fabric that pushes the data center network design to the extreme by making all network links reconfigurable and eliminating all switches except top-of-rack. This vision can offer significant benefits in terms of increased flexibility, reduced equipment cost, and minimal cabling complexity. We will argue that in order to achieve this vision we need to look beyond conventional RF wireless solutions. We will describe the promise of steerable free-space optics (FSO) to build such a fabric. We will showcase the viability with an early prototype and describe the associated algorithmic and system-level challenges. The talk will conclude with other possible emerging applications of similar FSO-based designs. Biography: Dr. Samir Das is a Professor of computer science at Stony Brook University, State University of New York (SUNY). He also serves as the Director of the Networking Technologies Division in CEWIT, the New York State Center of Excellence on Wireless and Information Technology. Samir Das received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, in 1994. His research interests are in wireless networking and mobile computing, focusing on protocols, systems and performance evaluation, and he has published over 120 articles on these topics. He received the U.S. National Science Foundation’s CAREER award in 1998 and the best paper award in ACM MobiSys conference in 2007. He has been a speaker in the Distinguished Visitor program of the IEEE Computer Society during 2001-03. He was the program Co-Chair for the ACM MobiHoc Symposium in 2001 and ACM MobiCom Conference in 2004. He has been on the editorial boards of theIEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, ACM/Springer Wireless Networks Journal and Ad Hoc Networks journal. He also routinely serves on the program committees of top networking conferences such as IEEE Infocom or ACM MobiCom.
