The challenge we face
A global challenge
Annual extraction of construction materials grew by a factor of 34, ores and minerals by a factor of 27, fossil fuels by a factor of 12,
biomass by a factor of 3.6
During the 20th century, world population grew by a factor 3.7,
total material extraction grew by a factor of 8 and GHG emissions
grew by a factor of 13

Is our world on a sustainable path?
Population growth
2050 – 9.7 billion
+3 billion middle
class consumers by 2030
80% of the population shares
5.5% of the global wealth(Oxfam, 2016)
60% of ecosystems already degraded or used unsustainably
+3°
33% of soils is
moderately to highly degraded
Producing and consuming sustainably is central to sustainable, circular and inclusive economies, addressing resource scarcity
concerns, environmental impacts, and pollution while reducing economic and social costs associated with those impacts.
Sustainable Consumption and Production?
• Improving quality of life without increasingenvironmental degradation or compromising the resource needs of future generations
• Decoupling economic growth from environmentaldegradation
• Applying system approaches such as life-cycle thinking which considers the impacts at all stages of the production and consumption process
• Guarding against the re-bound effect, wherebyefficiency gains are cancelled out by resultingincreasing consumption
Key notions: Decoupling

Agenda & SDGs
Transforming our world2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
We envisage a world in which every country enjoys sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and decent work for all. A world in which consumption and production patterns and use of all natural resources –
from air to land, from rivers, lakes and aquifers to oceans and seas - are sustainable
(Preamble)
Goal 12Ensure sustainable consumption and
production patterns
12.1 Implement the 10-year framework of programmes on sustainable consumption and
production, all countries taking action, with developed countries taking the lead, taking
into account the development and capabilities of developing countries
Objectives of the 10YFP
Accelerate the shift towards SCP in all countries by supporting regional and national policies and initiatives
Increase RE and decouple economic growth from
environmental degradation, creating decent jobs and
contributing to poverty eradication and shared
prosperity
Support capacity-building and facilitate access to financial and technical assistance for developing countries, to implement SCP activities at all levels
Serve as an information and
knowledge sharingplatform on SCP to
enable all stakeholders to exchange policies, tools,
initiatives and best practices, enhancing cooperation

10YFP programmes serve as open, inclusive and collaborativeplatforms and accelerators: ideas, expertise, and resources todeliver SCP on an operational, concrete, and increasing scale atregional and national levels.
Building synergies and cooperation, bringing together existing initiatives and partners, leveraging resources towards common objectives;
Scaling up and replicating successful policies and best practices for SCP, responding to national and regional needs, priorities and circumstances;
Generating and supporting new projects and activities on SCP, expanding partnerships and and scope and reach of SCP initiatives and policies.
Towards collective impact
647 = number of entities engaged in the 10YFP
79,44 million USD = amount of financial resources made available in support to the shift to SCP (tentative*)
32,533 = person days of training
513 = number of outreach and communication activities conducted by 10YFP partners
253 = number of governments and other organisations making progress on policy instruments integrating SCP objectives

Monitoring national SCP policies
Virtually all national governments now recognise SCP as a policy objective: SCP is no longer seen as a niche but increasingly recognised as a cornerstone of environmental and development strategies.
Many governments take a broad view on SCP and use it as an overarching approach, including to fight poverty, create jobs, and protect livelihoods.
Ministries of Environment most often have the lead, but there is a high level of involvement of other ministries
Institutional challenges that governments are facing:• Leadership – where the responsibility for SCP strategy making and coordination should
be placed within the government • Mainstreaming and coherence – how policies of various ministries with diverse or
conflicting mandates can be aligned with SCP objectives• Focus areas and policy entry-points – what economic sectors, specific issues, and
actor groups can help engage with complex systems of consumption and production
