Dr. Jeeves finds solutions to all dental problems at the Newbury Marketplace

Dental Lounge

Dr Jeevana Subasinghe (Dr. Jeeves) is an established dentist in Newbury. He has 20 years of experience and holds full professional registrations to practice Dental Surgery in both Finland and in the U.K.

He brings to Newbury extremely valuable knowledge from working relationships which he has with prominent clinicians and clinics in Finland and Switzerland – where the very latest and state of the art technology is used.

Under one roof all disciplines of Dentistry are performed and all solutions and options offered - ‘All treatments, one responsibility’.

Apart from routine dental care and hygiene, the following are also included: cosmetic dentistry, implantology, orthodontics, prosthodontics (dentures), root canal therapy, oral surgery, treatment of advanced gum infections, guided tissue regeneration, bone grafting, teeth whitening and non surgical wrinkle softening with Botulinum toxin-A.

As you would expect, Newbury Marketplace Dental Lounge is one of the most modern surgeries in the country - impeccably clean, functional and of course equipped with the most up-to-date diagnostic tools. It is BUPA accredited and all work is guaranteed.

Dr. Jeeves firmly believes in allocating his patients very generous time intervals. He knows the importance of getting to know his patients and how vital it is to gain their confidence - then together they can achieve outstanding results. He has much experience in treating nervous children and adults alike, also patients with special care needs.

He runs a very flexible approach to the timing of appointments - evening and weekend appointments can easily be arranged.

P.S A little update: starting at the head of the household, DH (darling husband) hasbeen toiling in the garden; he has planted some beautiful primroses outside myoffice and as I write this, he is tackling some never ending weeding. I don’t care somuch for gardening, particularly the weeding, so am indebted to him! DD is nowracing on towards the end of her NQT (newly qualified teaching) position and tellsus she has loved this year - a joy to hear! DS is safely back from Afghan. We nowawait the return of his regiment - the Irish Guards.

NEW TO THATCHAM:NEW TO THATCHAM:NEW TO THATCHAM:

“Investment into the West Berkshire area, in this case,Thatcham, is always welcome.

The decision by Harrods to move its distribution centreinto the area will create much needed jobs both inconstruction and operations.

In addition, the Thatcham area is a good living andworking environment for future employees. Road linksare excellent too with easy access to the M4/A34. Thisannouncement will give a boost to the local economyand put Thatcham on the map.

The West Berks Chamber Council support the invest-ment but will work with the local authority to ensurethat minimum disruption is caused to local businesses while the building work is taking place.”

There may become a time in your life whereeither you or someone you know becomesunable to manage their own affairs, whether itbeing your financial or welfare affairs.

Inheritance Protection Solicitor Lucy Samaraexplains why it is important to plan for the futureand prepare a Lasting Power of Attorney.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)?

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal documentthat enables you to appoint an attorney orattorneys to make decisions on your behalfshould you ever require them to. LPA’s cameinto effect on the 1st October 2007 and replacedthe Enduring Power of Attorney.

Is there more than one type of Lasting Powerof Attorney?Yes, there are two different types:Property and Affairs: enables your attorneys tomake decisions about your property andfinances. Personal Welfare: enables yourattorneys to make decisions about your personaland medical welfare.

How many attorneys can I appoint? You can appoint a minimum of 1 attorney and amaximum of 4.

Can I place any restrictions limiting myattorneys authority?Yes, you can restrict your attorneys authority forexample not permitting them to make anydecisions on any property that you own, orrestricting the power so that your attorneys are notallowed to use the LPA unless you have lostmental capacity.

When will my attorney’s be able to act for me?

Your attorneys will not be able to act on yourbehalf until the Lasting Power of Attorney has beenregistered with the Court of Protection. This is asimple process and is there to safeguard you. Theregistration process involves you or your attorney(s) (depending on who is registering the LPA) tonotify up to 5 relatives or friends who you havenamed in the LPA and then submitting theapplication to the Court of Protection. A smallcourt fee is payable and the registration process iscurrently taking between 8 and 12 weeks.

If I prepare and register a Lasting Power ofAttorney does that mean that I am unable tomanage my affairs from thereon?

No, your attorneys will not use the LPA unless youask them to. As soon as the LPA has beenprepared and registered you can store itsomewhere for safekeeping and if it is then everneeded it is ready to use straight away by theattorneys.

How do I prepare a Lasting Power of Attorney?

You are able to prepare an LPA yourself but youwill need to find a professional such as a doctor orsolicitor to act as your certificate providerconfirming that you fully understand the effect ofthe LPA. I would strongly advise you to seekexpert advice from a solicitor who will also be ableto act as your certificate provider.

If you would like further information or advice onLPA’s please contact Lucy Samara at GardnerLeader on 01635 508 080.

Spring Clean your GardenSpring Clean your GardenSpring Clean your GardenSpring Clean your Garden!

With the flowers blooming and new leavesappearing on the trees, April is a time whenmost of us like to have a bit of a tidy-up andrevitalise the garden for summertime.Whether you’re preparing for the growingseason, or simply wanting to improve thelook of your garden, we have some greatideas to give your green space a goodspring clean.

Tools of the tradeBefore you tackle your garden, have aquick sort through your tools. Give them aclean, decide what needs to be replacedand scrub off any rust, before rubbing on alittle vegetable oil to keep them in tip-topcondition. Check your mower and hedgetrimmer to see if any blades needsharpening or replacing and discard any oldchemicals cluttering up your shelves, whichmay even present a health risk.

Throw out the old plantsStart by removing dead annuals or plantsshowing any sign of disease, and pull upinvading weeds - but don’t add them to yourcompost bin. Any bulbs which have finishedflowering will need deadheading, but don’tremove the leaves as they will provide theenergy for next year’s growth. Someshrubby plants with woody stems, such asbuddleia and lavender, will need to bepruned in order for new blooms to appearon the freshly-cut branches.

Clean your deckingBarbeque season is just around the cornerand if you are doing a bit of entertaining, you’ll want your decking to scrub up well.Start by picking a dry day and go over the

wood with a stiff broom or multi-purposepressure washer. Now that the deck is freefrom any clutter and dirt you can focus oncleaning the wood using a dedicatedproduct, finishing with a good rinse toremove all traces of the chemicals. Allowthe deck to dry completely before replacingthe furniture and other items.

Patios, paths and rough edgesA little touching up here can make the worldof difference. Start by trimming overhanginggrass from the edges of your patio, pathways and borders, and check to see ifany stepping stones have sunk belowground height – if they have, raise them sothat loose soil won’t cover them when itrains. Brush off any old leaves from yourpatio before giving it the once-over with apressure washer. If you don’t mind a bit ofgraft, scrub with a specialist path and patiocleaner. Finally, pull out any invasiveweeds from the gaps between the patiostones, and lift up encroaching moss.

Bring your grass up to scratchIf all the trudging around in mud hasn’tdone your garden any favours, it’s wellworth investing in a lawn fertiliser, which willmake your grass lovely, thick and green –as well as preventing weeds and moss fromforming. If you have a real problem with thelatter, find a feeding product whichincorporates weed-killer. At this time ofyear, aeration is also important: you don’tneed any flashy equipment – by piercingholes with a pitchfork about 4 inches deepevenly across areas where the lawn issuffering, you’ll improve drainage which willdo wonders for the grass.

Be house proudDon’t neglect the exterior of your house.Wash your windows, and if they have

wooden frames, you may want to givethem a fresh lick of paint. Clear out deadleaves from the guttering and check thatnothing is blocking the soakaways.Throw away any old children’s toys orclutter, and remove cobwebs.

Treat garden furnitureTo prolong the life of your garden furniture,it will need a yearly service to remove anyrust spots and prevent against decay. Yourwooden furniture will benefit from a goodrub down and coating of varnish or teak oil.To remove rust spots, scrape away with asteel wool pad, and use a dry paintbrush toremove particles left on the surface. Finally, apply a waterproof sealer, in accordancewith the manufacturer’s instructions.

Prepare the soilIf you plan to grow some fruit and veg, purchase a soil-testing kit from your localgarden centre. Once you know what kind ofearth you’re dealing with, you can improveits quality by adding various nutrients. Bedsand vegetable patches will benefit from the

removal of stones, twigs and plant debris, agood dig, and the addition of some organicmatter such as rotted-down horse manureand a layer of mulch.

Give your pond some lifeStart by getting rid of dead leaves, fallenbranches and old plants, but don’t throwthese – instead, try replanting in new soil.Next, remove the pump, replace the filterand check everything still works properly. Ifyou have any paving slabs, give them a bitof a scrub and tidy back any overhangingplants. Note however that if you have fish, try not to cause too much of a disturbanceas they are still in winter mode.

Get growingThe weather is warming up and now is theideal time to cultivate some seedlings. Startoff with some tomatoes, sunflowers, saladleaves and chillies, and place themsomewhere warm, ready for the sun whensummer comes. Clean all your old pots witha scrubbing brush, re-plant your windowboxes and, finally, sit back and enjoy!

There are few events that rival aWorld Scout Jamboree. From itsbeginnings in the 1920s during theaftermath of the First World War, TheJamboree has grown to become one of thelargest, most diverse gatherings of youngpeople anywhere in the world.

Every four years, tens of thousands of youngpeople involved in Scouting, aged 14 to 18travel from upwards of 150 countries to sharea two-week adventure that will live with themforever.

The 22nd World Scout Jamboree will be heldin Sweden during July and August 2011 whennearly 40,000 Scouts and Leaders willconverge on the Jamboree site, Nr Rinkaby insouthern Sweden’s Skane province, creatinga truly multinational and multiculturalexperience for those lucky enough to takepart.

The UK Jamboree Contingent will consist of3,500 participants from all over the UK. 36young people and 4 leaders have beenselected to represent Berkshire. All thoseselected to represent Berkshire had to gothrough a rigorous selection process, so canbe very proud that they’ve been chosen torepresent Local Scouting internationally. Thisis a once in a lifetime experience as anyScout will only ever get the opportunity ofattending a World Scout Jamboree once intheir Scouting career!

The whole Jamboree experience itself lastsfor almost three weeks and consists of a pre-event in Denmark, the Jamboree itself andthen Home Hospitality in Finland

The preparations for the Jamboree inBerkshire started in September 2009 whenthe four Leaders were selected to representthe county and to take the Berkshire

Contingent to the Jamboree. This wasfollowed in March 2010 when the BerkshireJamboree Leader Team held a selectioncamp in Windsor Great Park, with the solepurpose of selecting 36 young people torepresent Berkshire at the 22nd World ScoutJamboree. Nearly 150 Scouts applied socompetition for places was fierce.

1 of the Leaders and 4 of the Scoutschosen to take part in the Jamboree live inand around Thatcham. They are allmembers of Axford Explorer Scout Unit. TheUnit meets regularly in Thatcham and aroundthe local area. So Thatcham can really saythat it will be well represented at thismomentous event! The leaders made the selection 17 monthsahead of the Jamboree so that there is plentyof time for the excitement to build, forparticipants to raise funds to pay for theevent and to attend the many training eventsneeded. The training programme aims toequip the Scouts with the skills to take part inand make the most of the Jamboreeexperience.

Training is an important part of the Jamboreeas it gives the participants the opportunity tobond as a team and to work together toinvolve all sorts of people - from parents, family and friends to Leaders, teachers, colleagues, even local newspapers and radiostations. It also ensures that the BerkshireScouts not only are credit to UK Scouting butare also a credit to the local area.

Were you dropped on your head as ababy?

Did your mother drop you on yourhead when you were a baby? Thisunfortunate event has acquiredsomething of a cult status in modernsociety. I am not, of course, talkingabout the few instances where a fallhas serious consequences, I amtalking about the off-hand commentblaming an adult’s mistakes, failingsor deficiencies on a certain childhoodexperience.

Of course, it is usually said as a joke. But jokes and glib clichés aresometimes convenient ways to avoidconfronting serious and unpalatablethings. Perhaps when you read thisyou are not thinking about beingdropped on your head as a baby. You may not think this is a joke atall. Perhaps you are thinking ofother unpleasant or disturbingmemories and perhaps you wouldprefer it if somebody took youseriously because you have had

enough of burying your pain toprotect yourself and those aroundyou.

On the other hand, you might bereading this and thinking that youweren’t dropped on your head as ababy (or experienced any otherparticular neglect or abuse) yet youare still feeling that you can’t cope insome way. You may feel thatbecause you can’t identify a goodreason and therefore can’t justifyyour suffering, it can’t be real orimportant. You may even feel that itmust really be your fault and this isjust adding to your torment.

Either way, whether or not you weredropped on your head as a baby, thesame issues are around – blame, guilt and shame. These feelings havea nasty way of convincing you thatyou are unworthy of being takenseriously, that you do not deservebetter, that you don’t have the abilityto change and even that you will bepunished for trying to make thingsbetter.

Counselling is a safe way to discoverthat you do deserve better, that youcan change and that someone willtake you seriously.

FEATURE:FEATURE:FEATURE: Our Health Therapist - Theresa Wright

Cardiac disease accounts for nearly 126,000 deaths peryear of which 38,000 occur prematurely below the age of75 according to the British Heart Foundation lateststatistics (2008).

Coronary Heart Disease – CHD – is an umbrella term forseveral cardiac pathologies, including myocardialinfarction, commonly heart attack, Coronary artery disease– self-explanatory -, heart valve disease and heart failure. The underlying cause of CHD is normally a result ofatheroma (fatty plaque) which builds up in one or more ofthe coronary arteries, resulting in poor blood flow to themyocardium (heart muscle). Inactivity, smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, family history andageing all lead towards atheroma. Basically, the arteriesget furred up and the blood can’t flow. I have to add herethat in my studies I have dissected arteries belonging topatients who have died of heart disease and was horrifiedby atheroma. I had originally believed this to be like a fattysubstance – a bit like a blocked drain -. It wasn’t. It is likelime-scale and broke the scalpel I was working with. Thinkof that inside you, focuses the mind on a healthy diet – noproblem !

Studies by the American Journal of Medicine(2004) and the Annals of Internal Medicine (2005)have shown that exercise reduces the risk of totalmortality 27%, cardiac mortality 31% andrecurrence rate of CHD by 38%. The reasons whythis happens is not yet fully understood. Howeverexercise reduces the build up of atheroma in thecoronary arteries, prevents thrombus (clot)formation and increases vasodilation (expansion)of the coronary arteries which promotes bettercoronary blood flow to the heart. The heart afterall, is a type of muscle tissue.

There are about 400 Cardiac Rehabilitationprogrammes in the UK. However only 41% ofeligible patients are offered this and 50% will dropout before the end of the programme and with just30% continuing exercising at one year (statisticsagain from the British Heart Foundation).

I think the point here is prevention rather than cure.A little exercise goes a long way. For many peoplethe idea of formal exercise is an anathema. However, parking your car a little further awayeach time you go out is no great hardship. Howabout getting off the bus or train one stop beforeyou normally do - perhaps three times a week? How about making piles of things to take upstairsand then making four journeys up those stairsrather than two? How about never using lifts orescalators? How about some skipping or playingwith a Hoola Hoop? How about some good oldfashioned dancing? There are so many differentways of exercising that don’t have to be a visit to agym or riding a bike or swimming if you hate thosethings. The only restriction is your imagination.

Marie Verney, Solicitor, Associate and Head of thespecialist Wills & Estate Planning Team at law firm,Charles Lucas & Marshall looks at the steps whichneed to be taken when a partner requiresresidential care.

Q. My husband has Alzheimer’s disease andwill shortly be moving into residential care. Willour house have to be sold to pay the care fees?

A. While you continue to live in the house, itsvalue will not be taken into account in assessing howmuch your husband should personally pay for his care. You will not have to sell the house. A similar exclusionwould be available if you were unmarried but living witha partner who had to go into care.

Q. My husband receives pension income andhas some savings. Will these have to be used topay for his care?

A. Your husband’s state pension and any otherstate benefits will have to be used for the cost of hiscare, regardless of whether or not he has any savings.Only one half of any occupational or personal pensionwill have to be used, provided the other half is paid toyou.

To the extent that your husband’s income is insufficientto pay the care fees in full, then the shortfall will haveto be paid from your husband’s savings if these exceedthe prescribed limit (currently £23,250). Once thesavings fall below this figure the local authority will

start to make a contribution towards the fees.

Once your husband’s savings have fallen to the lowerlimit (currently £14,250) then he will not have tocontribute any more of his savings to the cost of care.

If you have savings in joint names then you shouldseparate these into individual accounts of equal valuebefore your husband goes into care.

Q. Should I review myWill?

A. You should certainly review your Will if you arecurrently leaving your estate to your husband outrighton your death. If your Will stays in this format yourcapital will have to be used to pay your husband’s carefees following your death.

You should consider changing your Will so that youleave your estate to a trust from which your husbandcan benefit. The value of your estate will not then betaken into account in assessing how much capital yourhusband has. Consequently the local authority willstart to contribute to his care fees earlier than wouldotherwise be the case.

If the local authority’s contribution is not sufficient topay for the care home fees in full then the trust fundcan be used to make “third party top ups” to meet thebalance of the fees.

When you update your Will, you should also takeadvice on the structure of your assets.

For example, if you own your house jointly with yourhusband then it is likely that on your death your shareof the house will pass to him outright even though yourwill states that your estate is to be left in trust. Youneed to ensure that you own the house jointly as“tenants in common”. This means that when the firstof you dies, his or her half of the house will passaccording to the Will. For this arrangement to worksatisfactorily, it is important that your husband haspreviously made a Will in your favour.

Dear ReaderDear ReaderDear ReaderDear ReaderI love this time of year. I have just seen the first lambs skipping in the fields, thedaffodils are out in my garden and the sun feels warm upon my face. Signs oflife and hope are springing up all over the place. However, it is easy to takethese signs for granted when we see them year after year.

We only have to open our newspapers or switch on our televisions and hear thestories coming out of Japan, New Zealand and Libya to remember that for manyin our world death and hopelessness are imminent realities. Maybe for some ofus the future seems bleak. Whether due to bereavement, sickness, unemployment or economic difficulties we can feel as though we have no hope.

And it is in to this mixture of life and death; of hope and hopelessness, that theEaster story speaks. For many who witnessed the cruel death of Jesus it wasthe end. The end of his life; the end of the hope that he brought; the end of abelief that God had come to save the world. Death once again would have thefinal word. Yet it wasn’t so.

Three days after he was certified as dead, people went to visit the tomb ofJesus – only to find it empty. And in the days that followed many met with him, they ate with him, they touched where the nails had gone and were convincedthat he had been raised to life again. It was life, not death that had the finalword. Hope flowed where previously only hopelessness had been.

So for the last 2,000 years Christians have been able to celebrate Easter for thegood news of life and hope that it brings. They celebrate not that Jesus died, but that he was raised to life again. Christians live in hope convinced that Godhimself came to Earth and endured the darkest events out of love for us. Evenwhen we face the hardest of situations we can do so knowing that God is therewith us, and that he understands because he has been there himself. Andfinally Christians live with the hope that it is life and not death that has the finalword, not life for a short while, but life forever.

May you discover the good news of hope and life this Easter.

Best Wishes

Dear ReaderDear ReaderDear ReaderDear ReaderAs a fellow Thatcham resident, I am delightedto introduce you to Kidzown Kanvas!Having three children of my own, I know full well how much they lovepersonalised items. Often they like their own room to be decoratedwith their favourite design - whether it be Disney, Cbeebies, Horses,Ballet Dancers - indeed almost anything - the internet comes into itsown here! Please see our website: www.kidzownkanvas.co.uk.Kidzown can supply you with canvases, personalised name plaques, mu-rals, hand-painted canvases, names made from individual letters oreven flower pot pals! All very reasonably priced and they can make theideal present.Another very popular idea is to turn photos into a Contemporary artpiece. See photos top left. This effect can turn any photo - yourself -your kids - your pets - into a modern piece of work, which willcomplement any room in your house and can even be done to matchyour colour scheme! Please give me a ring to discuss any ideas you may have.

Best wishes

Spring has finally begun to appear and so haveour new born lambs!

When going to visit the animals on our farm, the children havehad the added excitement of knowing that there may be‘new born lambs’. So far seven new lambs have been bornand many of the children have been lucky enough to see thelambs when they were only a few hours old.

Jubilee Day Nursery has developed a small working farmalong side the Nursery where we keep many different animals

such as miniature pigs, Dexter cows, rabbits, goats, donkeys, chickens, ducks andpedigree Hampshire sheep. This is our second lambing season and the children areable to watch the lambs grow and mature into adult sheep. We are incubating duck andchicken eggs which the children will be able to watch as the chicks hatch towards theend of March.

Later in the summer we are expecting calvesand ‘giddy goats’ (kids).

Children love being able to watch young animals frolic freelyin the paddocks, they learn so many things about theanimals and develop an awareness of the animals needssuch as nurturing, shelter and food. One of our lambs, whowas rejected by its mother, is now being bottle fed.

At Jubilee Day Nursery, we try to involve the children with allthe farm animals. By giving children regular access to theoutdoors it enhances their learning and helps children to gain anunderstanding about the changing world around them.

As the weather warms up, our children will be spending more time outdoors, playing inthe gardens, planting vegetables and flowers in the sensory area, exploring the woodsand paddling in our stream. We are also looking forward to our wonderful bluebelldisplay in Roughwood.

If you would like your child to be part of thisamazing learning experience please contact us.

Jubilee Day Nursery is open 5 days a week from7:30 to 18:00 and can provide full time or session

care for children aged 3 months to 5 years.

The Dress ...The Dress ...The Dress ...The Dress ...The wedding season is upon us!

For every bride to be, attention turns to finding thatperfect dress. Fortunately there is more choice thanever on offer to beguile brides-to-be - from HighStreet bargains to high-end fashion.

Retailers are becoming increasingly aware of themarket demands for ‘designer style’ at high streetprices and many new, more affordable ranges, areemerging.

Whether you have had your dress designed in yourmind for years or you are only just starting to look forstyle inspiration, the fantastic array of classic, cuttingedge and modern designs infiltrating high streetboutiques means that finding your dream dress is farmore likely to become a reality. For many this comesas a welcome alternative to commissioning abespoke creation with a more hefty price tag.

As vintage chic is an enormous trend at the momentand is showing no sign of going away, many topdesigners are taking inspiration from bygone eras byproducing magnificent gowns with extremeembellishments. Ian Stuart’s latest collection - whichis typically theatrical, playful and utterly romantic -capitalises on this with truly magical results.

Taking ideas from this means that you can revel in awide choice of sumptuous fabrics, layers of lusciouslace and fantastic appliqué work - not to mentionheavenly embroidery - when designing the bodice.Embracing full-on vintage style and purchasing anauthentic period dress, or adapting a family piece, can not only be a cost effective measure for the morebudget aware, but can have spectacular results, asyou are guaranteed to have a totally unique gownwhich will certainly not look embarrassingly dated inyears to come.Adaptations can easily provide a way for you tostamp your own style and personality on any vintagepiece. Using classic make-up and hair styling canhelp to achieve the full period look, but as analternative, adopting a more modern style can marrytwo periods together and work exceptionally well. With that in mind, you can carry forward the ideas of‘something old, something new’, when choosingaccessories. A tiara from the 1920s can sit happilyalongside contemporary earrings. For those who love modern styles and who would not- even for a minute - entertain the idea of anythingother than a sparkling new gown, Vera Wang’s latest

collection of creations will suit perfectly. As adesigner whose creations have been worn bynumerous celebrities over the years, Wang’swedding dresses have consistently been big news. And the reason for her longevity? Her pieces areclassic, elegant and chic. The perfect formula for themodern bride to fall in love with.

And then there’s Frank Usher’s exciting bridal rangewhich is tailored towards the bride-to-be who requiressimple, elegant styling. His new ‘Destination Bridal’collection is ideal for those marrying in an exoticlocation; but of course, this will work just as well for asummer wedding at home. For a modern dress, withsleek lines and ultra chic style, this new collection iswell worth a look.Undoubtedly, the decision of which dress to choosejust became harder albeit in a good way, as beingspoilt for choice is never bad. And be reassured: ifyour budget doesn’t quite stretch to a designer gown, you can still acquire a similar look. The high streetalways reflects the catwalk . But for real savings, adapting a vintage gown might just mean that youhave enough left over for a honeymoon of yourdreams. But all that’s another story!

FEATURE:FEATURE:FEATURE:

Tracing your family history is afascinating and absorbing hobby that canthrow up surprising results. With

increased interest in this pastime, many newtools and strategies have made it easy tosearch for your ancestors, especially online.

If you’re inspired to trace your family tree thefirst step is to record your own knowledge. Notethe full names, dates of birth, marriage detailsand geographical information of as many ofyour family members as possible. Once you’veexhausted your own store of data, ask othermembers of your family for further details. Startwith your parents, grandparents and anyoneelse you can, but do this as tactfully aspossible. Remember, certain details may bedistressing to some people. Often though, it’sthese conversations that lead you to delvedeeper into your history and that’s wheninteresting findings arise.

Don’t necessarily take everything you’re told asfact. Details such as dates and events canbecome muddled by memory and time.People’s names can also be confusing: yourgreat-grandfather may be commonly referred toas Jack, but the name on his birth certificatemight actually be William John.

Once you have pieced together an outline, startverifying the details by checking them against

official records. Certificates have beenrecorded for every birth, marriage and deathsince 1837 and copies of these can be viewedin county archives or the National Archives inLondon - www.nationalarchives.gov.uk.Certificates are also available from numerousonline sites. These certificates provide a wealthof knowledge including ages, occupations andthe true full names of people. Useful sites are:

• www.findmypast.co.uk,• www.genuki.org.uk and• www.ancestry.co.uk

Organising your research is vital. You can dothis on paper or use your PC with one of themany family tree software packages on themarket and it is fun to go back in time, lookingfor memorial stones in graveyards, near whereancestors used to live.

Census returns should form a large part of yourresearch too as they provide a massive insightinto the lives of your ancestral family. Censusrecords from 1841 to 1911 are available onlinevia the sites above. Through the census returnsyou can find out information regarding people’sjobs, family relationships and how life was atthe time.

FEATURE:FEATURE:FEATURE:

This season’s most fashionable colours for interiorsare strong and bold: daring blacks and metallics, vivid citruses and a range of sorbet-like Fiftiesshades. Yet colour can be complicated: stray awayfrom safe neutrals and who hasn’t ended up in a fogof indecision? Our guide to using colour will help youavoid clashes and select the shades that work bestfor you.

Colour is a hugely dynamic tool, affecting the way wefeel in a powerful, albeit often subconscious, way.And we each have our own feelings about colour, sothat one person’s warm and intimate room isanother’s nightmare of brash, clashing shades. All ofwhich makes using colour a rather dauntingundertaking. But never fear: there are some simpleguidelines to follow.

Painting a room a new colour is a quick, easy andinexpensive way to introduce a fresh look. If you’renot sure where to start, there’s a wealth of inspirationto be found in books or magazines, and the paintmanufacturers themselves can be a great help, whether in the form of brochures showing theircolours in action, a website with the facility to paint avirtual room or colour cards that demonstrate whichcolours work best together. If you’re wary of usingtoo many different colours, but would neverthelesslike to introduce some contrasts, agood rule of thumb is that darker andlighter shades of the same colour arealways good together (simply lookvertically up and down the paintcharts).

So far so good. Then, to narrow yourchoices down, you’ll want to considerthe colours of your existing furnishings, thepracticalities of how you live (darkish colours areuseful in a busy hallway which might suffer from

knocks and mud splatters, for example) and thearchitecture of your property. The latter informs notjust the suitability of certain colours – perhapshistoric colours for older properties, for example –but also their shades, as you may be able to getaway with bolder and/or darker colours in large andlight rooms.

Another consideration is where to put which paintcolours. Bear in mind that hallways, stairways andlandings are linking areas; when you stand in themyou may be able to see a number of different rooms,so you should consider how their colours will worktogether. As a general guideline, restful colours, suchas pale blues, lilacs and pinks, often work well inbedrooms, and bolder shades in dining rooms: red isa classic choice, in particular. In a hallway you couldmake a strong statement with a vibrant colour thatintroduces the house to visitors, or opt for somethingpaler that will maximise the sense of space.

Conventional colours for bathrooms are watery bluesand greens, but there’s no reasonwhy you shouldn’t opt forsomething completely different.Colours for living rooms shouldgenerally be chosen to workaround the existing furnishings –you might pick a colour from afavourite cushion, vase orpainting, for example; and the

same goes for kitchens, where you’ll already havecabinets and worktops that will dominate a scheme. Finally, in children’s bedrooms and playrooms you’ll

probably want to use a mix of fun, bright coloursthat are lively and stimulating.

Experimenting with paint colour is essential, as itcan be difficult to get it right first time. Always paintsheets of white card with your chosen samples andtape them up around a room, to observe in differentlights (what looks like a lovely purple in daylight, forexample, can become black after sunset). In a livingroom you’ll want the colours to work in both daylightand artificial light, whereas in bedrooms and diningrooms it is more important that they look attractiveat night-time. Take care with colours that are on theedge between two different shades, as thesechange more than any others in different lightconditions, and while this can be dramatic, it maynot be quite what you expect. And be careful to buythe right undercoat – it really does affect the endresult.

If the thought of colour everywhere just sounds a bittoo much, there are several ways in which it can beintroduced in more subtle ways. You could paint justone wall a strong shade, for example, with theothers in co-ordinating neutrals. Or how about somebeautiful wallpaper, an oversized stencilled motif oreasy-to-apply wall stickers? Alternatively, keepwalls white or very pale and add colour elsewhere.Changing a duvet cover or a tablecloth, forexample, will instantly transform an otherwiseneutral bedroom or dining room, while newcushions, vases and pictures will do the same for aliving room. Get handy and paint a chest of drawersor a side table, or make a loose cover for a sofa orchair: think laterally and this is where, for not toomuch effort and expense, it’s possible to ring thechanges and make colour work creatively for you. It’s as simple as black and white.

What’s white, has two protruding humps and goeslike the clappers? No, not Katie Price, silly, it’s this ofcourse, the Porsche Boxster Spyder. Sorry, thatreally was uncalled for, especially when we’re in thepresence of an all-time great… because that’sexactly what the Boxster Spyder is.

At first some people might find it hard to work outwhat the point of it is. Porsche has stripped it of mostniceties – like door handles – and it does without anelectric roof, replaced instead by a rudimentary pieceof canvas and cling film stapled to the bodywork.Even Porsche admits only around 100 will findhomes in the UK each year.

But then you get behind the wheel and everythinginstantly makes sense. This Porsche is a driver’sdream and on the incredible Welsh roads where wetested the Boxster it was a sheer delight.

At first it feels twitchy, on edge, alive. The steeringhas so much feel, it’s light and wriggles in your hands– and that takes some time to get used to. But settlein, tune into the sensations and feedback thisstunning Spyder is transmitting and it rewards youwith a drive of your life.

Power comes in linear and fast. That 3.4-litre,320bhp unit is a gem and, coupled with the Spyderdiet, produces impressive performance figures. Thesprint to 60mph is dispatched in 5.1 seconds and theway it translates that power into forward momentumso easily will have you beaming from ear to ear.

What makes the Spyder so good is the fact it canutilise every single one of its 320 horses, efficientlyand effectively. Higher-powered sports cars will out-drag it on the straights, but point the Porsche towardssome twisties and it’ll keep up with pretty muchanything. We just wish it sounded more potent – thesports exhaust option is a must. However, it’s not just about what’s under that shapelyhood. This car looks positively stunning too. In the icewhite paintwork our test car came in, it was a crowd-gatherer and those two rear humps behind theheadrests have a distinct air of Carrera GT aboutthem. We even managed to nail taking that ‘roof’ off. Yes, itis more complicated than an electric set-up, but withpractise we got the process down to about twominutes. Fair enough that’s not exactly quick – andyou wouldn’t want to get caught in a downpour – butthe hood is where Porsche has achieved most of theweight saving. The biggest problem we can see with this Porschethough is the name. The ‘Boxster’ part in its title justdoesn’t fit. This car is good enough – and uniqueenough – to have earned its own name altogether. It’s a brilliant piece of engineering and one of the all-time Porsche greats – why then, hasn’t the makerchristened it properly?
