I do hope the return to normal routine after the Christmas break has notbeen too much of a shock! It is quite a dreary time of year I find - but it certainlyhas not been so cold as yet (at least at the time of writing this).Whilst we all know that for many of us there is a fair amount of adversity andausterity in our lives at present, on the other side of the coin, there are those whoare experiencing good and positive times. I am hoping to run a free page on thelatter. We need to hear their stories. We need to be uplifted. Please let me knowif you would like to suggest someone - perhaps a young person who is at uni orcollege happily studying with excellent support and help - and the future is lookingbright - or it could be an elderly person who is encountering particular love, careand encouragement. P.S A little update: starting at the head of the household, DH (darling husband)before Christmas encountered a few extra aches and pains The doctor told himhe had to have at least a month of rest, with no golf, but now fortunately (foreveryone!) he is back on the Course and feeling much better. DD is excited andvery busy getting ready for her wedding in the Spring. (Just booked Bernie todayto do her hair and Janie Perry to de-stress me!) DS is preparing to go out to Qatar- a new job awaits him there (Still a long way from home but closer thanAfghanistan) - thank goodness for email.

Lucy Samara, Solicitor, at Gardner Leaderexplains the common scenario faced by manyfamilies regarding care for the elderly andadvises how you can best deal with thesituation, making use of an available funding.

My mother is very ill in a nursing home; sheowns her own property and has savings. Mymother is adamant that she doesn’t want herassets to be used to fund care home fees. Isthere any way that the NHS can pay for hercare?

The NHS do offer a complete package of care,which is arranged and funded by the NHS tomeet physical and or mental health needs thathave arisen due to ill health. This is known asNHS Continuing Health Care.

How do you qualify for this funding?

Not everyone will qualify for NHS ContinuingHealth Care. To be eligible your main or primaryneed for care must relate to your health. Themost common examples of people who are mostlikely to be eligible are:

• those who have a complex medicalcondition that requires a lot of care andsupport and/or needs highly specialisednursing support

• someone who is nearing the end of their life

• individuals with a condition that is rapidlygetting worse and may be terminal.

Eligibility for NHS Continuing Health Care doesnot depend on a specific health condition, illnessor diagnosis or who provides the care, or wherethe care is provided. Therefore, to ascertain ifyour mother would qualify she will need to beassessed by the local Primary Care Trust. Her GPwill be able to put you in touch with them.

My mother has already been means tested bySocial Services, is this a differentassessment?

Yes, it is a completely separate assessment andcan be carried out at any time.

My mother has been in the nursing home for aperiod of time and has been paying for hercare, does that matter?

No, you can request for an assessment to becarried out at any time. If the assessment issuccessful and your mother is entitled to receivethe funding the NHS can repay any overpaid carefees, i.e. from the date on which your motherwould have qualified if assessed earlier.

What happens if my mother does not qualify,or, I am not happy with the results of theassessment?

If you can bring a copy of the assessment to me,we can go through it together. If you are not inagreement with the assessment, you are able tochallenge the decision.

If your mother does not qualify for NHSContinuing Health Care then she will be meanstested by Social Services to determine how muchof her assets will be used to fund care home fees.

In either case I would strongly advise you to seeklegal advice; there are other ways that we canhelp to protect your mother’s assets against carehome fees.

Winter Perfume Plants - By Pippa Greenwood

There’s no escaping the factthat the winter months can be alittle lacklustre in the garden,sometimes even a bit gloomy.However carefully you plantyour flowerbeds and borders,the number of brightly colouredplants for winter performance israther limited. But don’t forget that one of themost important ingredients in a wintergarden is perfume – it’s certainly somethingwhich can transform my mood in an instant,especially when I’m out in the garden. So atthis time of year, think scent, as there are afew really brilliant winter perfume plants andthere’s a good chance that they’ll be readilyavailable in garden centres and nurseriesright now, often in pride of place.

The Witch Hazels or Hamamelis are one ofmy favourite winter flowerers. With theirunusual oriental-looking yellow, orange orbronzy-red spidery flowers on bare branchesthey look stunning and provided they arekept adequately moist during drier weatherthey should thrive, especially if you have anacidic soil. If not, they also look good in largetubs such as half-barrels. But of courselooks are not everything and the perfume ofthe witch hazels is what really makes themsuch an asset - sweet, spicy and wonderfullygood at wafting around the garden. For bestresults, ensure the roots are just moist at alltimes and position the shrub somewhere thatyou can see as well as smell it. Variouscolours are available, in shades of brightestorange through to rich burgundy.

Wintersweet or Chimonanthus is anothergreat shrub for winter. The branches arecovered with creamy to yellow coloured multi

-petalled flowers with a seriously sweetperfume. Like the witch hazel it’s quite slowgrowing and doesn’t need to have a hugeamount of space allocated to it. This meansit’s a perfect choice for the smaller garden,but make sure you consider carefully whereto plant it, so that you can enjoy everyaspect of its display.

If you like a bit of variegated foliage then trythe Daphne odora ‘Aureo-marginata’, whichhas classic purple-pink clusters of flowers, avery strong perfume and leaves which aretypically green and leathery but with a brightyellow leaf margin. It can be a littletemperamental, but after its first year aDaphne generally settles in well and youwon’t regret buying it. Again, it can do well ina really large tub or half barrel - for this Iwould suggest a loam-based John Innestype compost mixed with about 30% loam-free multi-purpose compost to ensure thatdrainage remains good.

Mahonias with their holly-like leaves can bea trifle spiky but when they are in flowertheir brightest yellow spikes are really eye-catching and Mahonia japonica producesone of the sweetest perfumes you couldwish for right through from the middle ofwinter to early spring. If you prefer one withmore upright flowers, go for Mahonia xmedia ‘Charity’. Mahonias are good in partshade or full sun. Their only downside istheir leaves which can be a real hazard ifthe mahonia has been planted in the wrongplace - once it grows the stems protrude into nearby paths, seating areas orthoroughfares.

Another favourite of mine is the winterflowering honeysuckles. They are not asshowy as their summer flowering relations,but definitely a plant I’d hate to be without.The bare stems are covered with smallwhite-cream flowers which produce a

tremendously sweet, spicy aroma both nightand day. Unlike the summer floweringspecies those that have winter appeal arenot climbers, but informal shrubs.

And finally, don’t forget the Sarcococcas orwinter box. With their small, pretty butinconspicuous flowers they may notinstantly leap out and draw attention tothemselves, but the perfume of those tinyflowers is tremendous and really strong,making them a great winter flowering shrubthat I’d recommend you try.

In November 2011, ClaireNorris, of Just Shabby Chicand Theresa Wright of BlueHeart Ceramics hosted a twoday event at Midgham VillageHall. It’s story time! This means a hostof exciting learning experiencesfor all the babies and children atJubilee Day Nursery.From one to one stories, to a group going on abear hunt through our fields and woodland to findthe bear hiding in a den.

When Julia Donaldson - a leading children’sauthor - was recently appointed ‘Children’sLaureate’, she announced her aim to promoteprojects to link drama and music to stories. AtJubilee Day Nursery we are delighted as ourphilosophy is to bring stories alive.

Closely linked to the E.Y.F.S, children enjoylistening to traditional loved stories such as

‘Goldilocks and the threebears’ or ‘The EnormousTurnip’. They dress upand act out the stories intheir own animated way.Both inside and outside, theseactivities provides childrenwith a wealth of learning opportunities, includingcommunication, expressive language, countingand knowledge and understanding of the worldaround them.

Practitioners at Jubilee Day Nursery activelyencourage children to develop and extend theirstories. This begins by selecting a book from ourlibrary or from the mobile library (which visits thenursery on a regular basis). This enables childrento be placed at the centre of their learning. Theybegin to plan, make and work together to createtheir own interpretation of a chosen story. Wethen extend this with walking to the woods tocollect leaves and fir cones for ‘Percy the ParkKeeper’, or to recycle their milk cartons fromhome to build an igloo for ‘Miki’, or visiting thepigs and goats in the paddocks after reading‘The three little pigs’ or ‘Billy goat gruff’.

The children talk animatedly on their returnjourney from the woods and farm lands, theirconversations continuing on their way home andeven till bed time.
