the award. He and his entire parish have been extremely supportive and welcoming to CCARC since we are adjacent neighbors. They have welcomed and provided both spiri-tual support and kindness to “people” with disabilities that receive services from CCARC every day.

The Partners in Employment Award went to Plainville Board of Education Food Services, Plainville—who has been an exemplary employer for a CCARC individual with disabilities. This has been a successful due to the atmosphere of acceptance and diversity. James Bondi, Manager of the Food Services accepted the award and was the key person that genuinely made the difference to make for an inclusive environment.

CCARC also celebrated the lives of two incredible people with disabilities, Jerri Wolfe and William “BJ” Halsdorf. Their stories are an inspiration to all of us at CCARC and our community.

Letter from President/CEOJuly 14, 2004, CCARC opened its doors to our new American Savings Foundation Education and Training Center on Slater Road in New Britain. In 1952, several dedicated parents embarked on starting CCARC to provide day care programs for their son or daughter. Who would have imag-ined that fifty-seven years later CCARC would have a building of its own to provide the essential services to people with disabilities? In celebrating our 5th Anniversary, it is important to thank the many donors that helped make this dream happen! The Wall of Honor that highlights names of individuals, businesses and community foundations that brought this dream to a reality have been seen by hundreds people who have entered our doors to receive services as well as our friends and families that are welcomed to visit.

On May 21, 2009 at the Annual Meeting, it was voted to change our name from Central Con-necticut Association for Retarded Citizens, Inc. to CCARC, Inc. The discussion to change our name has been happening over the past few years with the inclusion of all our stakeholders. The name change has taken out the word “retarded” which unfortunately over the years has negatively labeled the “people” we support and value.

We want to thank you for being a part of our family and appreciate the advocacy and kindness that you share with us each day.

Sincerely,

Michael Carrier Anne L. Ruwet President CEO

U.S. Representative Chris Mur-phy took time to visit CCARC on May 28th to learn more

about the services that are provided here at CCARC. He had the opportunity to meet and speak directly with clients and staff during his tour. Chelsea Lodge, a strong self advocate had a few min-utes to share her experience testifying before the State Legislature a few years ago about the importance of changing the name of the Department of Mental Retardation to Department of Devel-opmental Services. Chris asked if she was nervous and she said “Yes.” Chris shared that he has done it many times and still gets nervous when he testifies. Anne Ruwet, CEO stated that “It was important to share the successes and challenges that CCARC has in providing critical services with the Congressman but his visit allows him to see firsthand the value to have agencies like CCARC in our communities.”
