“Thanks,” Cathy Schreima!

To The Editor:

We are fortunate to live in a part of the world where there are more positive things to talk about than negative things. One lady who has made her life’s work writing and speaking about the good people, good activities, and generally good quality of life we enjoy around here is Cathy Schreima.

Cathy has been known to most of us for her written words and photos in several local newspapers over the past two decades. From her “Lion’s Den” columns to the “Extra Merchandiser” to the “Auglaize Neighbors” pages, Cathy has had story after story to tell about the goings-on in our local communities. Perhaps you’ve been named as a participant, or had your photo appear with her article, or been identified as “one of the nicest people I know” in a story she’s written. What “The Lion Lady” has put into words over the years and editions has brought our small communities together in heart and mind, and inspired us to encourage and support one another over the years.

In addition to the things Cathy has written, she has also been a leader with the local chapters of Toastmasters International and the State Line Writers Club. Both organizations help people to reach their potential - in public speaking and in creative writing. It’s been Cathy’s lot in life to stimulate people’s thinking in their endeavors to be their best.

Cathy has been an example to many as well: by earning college degrees “later” in life, by succeeding as a single mom, and by handling the adversity of muscular dystrophy while continuing on with her career.

As much as she has done for others, Cathy has made a decision that will benefit herself and her family - to relocate to Florida. It will take a fierce fighter, energetic worker, and tenacious humanitarian to take the place of “The Lion Lady” in west central Ohio. It’s possible that Cathy herself has influenced, mentored, or encouraged someone locally who will step up to the challenge!

For those who would like to say “good bye” personally, Cathy’s friends in New Knoxville have organized a reception for her on Saturday, August 9, beginning at 6:30 pm. She’d love to see you.

On behalf of the Auglaize County communities that have been blessed by Cathy Schreima and what she has shared with all of us, I say “Thanks, Cathy,” and wish her the very best as she begins to write a new chapter in her own life.
