Joining the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance has been an eye-opening experience. The more I learn about this disease, the more I feel obligated to make every woman aware of ovarian cancer.

I’ve seen the grief of families who lost a loved one to the disease and heard the fears of those who are newly diagnosed. For everyone whose life has been touched by ovarian cancer, this cause is personal. Teal is the standard we carry on behalf of the 22,000 women diag-nosed every year—and the more than 14,000 expected to die from ovarian cancer in 2013.

The heartbreaking stories I hear from our community are balanced by hope—especially as I see what the Alliance can do. Across the nation, we are known as “the ovarian cancer people,” a strong voice on behalf of our community. Throughout this report you will see and hear the voices of women and men we have helped throughout the year.

In just six months, teal has become personal to me, just as it is to you. I can’t wait to see what we can do together in 2013.

“OCNA is truly a blessing and [an] inspiring organization,” said one attendee of our first-ever Midwest Regional Conference. Our field programs give hope and strength to survivors.

Advocacy As the only voice for women with ovarian cancer in on Capitol Hill, we ensure federal support for critical research and education. We met with an alphabet soup of government agencies in 2012, including the White House Office of Management and Budget.

AUG

Every day the Alliance hears from women

struggling to get the care they need for ovarian cancer. In October, we convened a group of experts to discuss some of the mostpressing issues facing our community. The recommendations from our first Advocate Conversations will be published in a white paper in 2013.

OCT

“It is easier to remember ovarian cancer symptoms when you see someone that hasgone through it.”

APR

From puppies to teal pedicures, more than

16,000 people (and pets!) sported teal to show their support for women with

ovarian cancer during National

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

A boy genius, a birthday party and breakthroughs in ovarian cancer were all

highlights of our 15th Annual Conference.

“It was so nice being with other ladies who have this disease in common, who understand and can relate… One of the most amazing moments was the evening of the 15th Anniversary Party—when the song ‘I Will Survive’ came on you just had to see all the amazing survivors on the dance floor singing loud and dancing away!”—A post from Junebug08 on our Inspire page

JUL

One of the 9,446 students we reached last year through Survivors Teaching Students: Saving Women’s Lives®, our signature program. In April, we amped up training for our 593 speakers.

“If you want to see a concentrated gaggle of talented, humble female chefs, as well as the doctors andorganizers,

[Turn Up the Heat is] one of the most humble, awe-inspiring and appreciative events you could possibly attend.”—Susan Holt, chef, CulinAerie

MARAre the states failing women with ovarian cancer? Our first-of-its-kind report card found that all 50 have room for improvement.

“My mom has always been a very giving person and during these past two years she hasn’t changed that a bit…. I love my mom with all my heart and hope I can be even at least half the woman she is.” — A tribute to Georgia Prather through our campaign:

“Mothers We Love” MAYANNUAL REPORT

OVARIAN CANCER NATIONAL ALLIANCE

2012

All year long, we celebrated like it was 1997, honoring the

Alliance’s 15th Anniversary.

“Before 1997—the dark ages of the infant internet—a woman who got ovarian cancer was a very lonely person.”—Patricia Goldman, founding mother of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance
