PRESIDENT’S LETTER We’re going BIG on water safety in the Big Easy! Please join me, and the NDPA Board of Directors in New Orleans, Louisiana from April 15 – 19, 2019 for the 18th Annual National Drowning Prevention Alliance’s Educational Conference.

Up from last year, this year we will have over 40 dynamic speakers and are pleased to announce that we are bringing the EMS track back again. As I hope we have delivered on in the past, this conference promises to offer valuable insight on the best practices, latest research, newest technology, and critical knowledge covering all areas of water safety and drowning prevention.

Our premier speakers and inspiring partners make it possible for the NDPA Educational Conference to be undeniably the best opportunity to grow both personally and professionally, while at the same time developing life-long relationships and connections. This is all possible due to the NDPA Educational Conference being the leading national conference devoted to the full spectrum of drowning prevention and water safety.

Mindfully designed each year, attendees will be offered information on innovative/most up-to-date research, technologies, products, educational programming, outreach strategies, policy and code, legislation, international relations, trends, patterns, and other important and progressive data. We know that you will find information that will be helpful to you and your community, as we all continue our work to prevent water-related injuries and tragedies.

I very much look forward to seeing you and having an amazing event filled with learning, connecting, reuniting, and as always, a smidge of fun. We’re in NOLA after all! Take time to take in the French Quarter; listen to authentic jazz in one of the many night clubs, indulge in a Café Du Monde beignet or cup of coffee, enjoy a brisk or slow walk along the Mississippi River. As they say “Laissez les bons temps rouler!”. Make your plans now, share this information with others, and see you all in N’Awlins in April 2019!

Sincerely,Melissa SuttonPresidentNational Drowning Prevention Alliance

FEATURED SESSION: INFLUENCING PUBLIC POLICY TO SERVE WATER SAFETY ALAN KORN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ABBEY’S HOPE CHARITABLE FOUNDATIONWednesday, April 17 | 4:30pm - 5:20pm

Many are still confused by both the requirements of the VGB Act and State laws around the country on how they serve drowning prevention and water safety. This session will review the requirements of these laws and also inform stakeholders on how they can get involved in the advocacy process to improve water safety. The session will include my Top 10 tips for effective “lobbying”.

GENERAL SESSION: THE STATE OF BOATING AND OPEN WATER SAFETY IN AMERICA PANEL DISCUSSION Thursday, April 18 | 12:30pm - 1:30pm

While the word “drowning” often leads to thoughts of swimming pools, more than 50% of drownings each year occur in natural water settings. Boating and natural water activities are increasing in popularity. 73 million (almost a quarter of the US population) participate in recreational boating -- this includes 58 million adults, and 15 million children. Meanwhile, open water swimming, kayaking and paddle-boarding are natural and enjoyable ways for athletes and families alike to enjoy the outdoors. With more people recreating in natural water, more people are at risk of drowning in natural water than ever before. Dana Gage, founder of The LV Project, moderates this panel of experts to share insights on key developments, ground-breaking programs and the future of open water safety. Join executives from the U.S. Coast Guard, National Safe Boating Council (NSBC), National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), and the Army Corp of Engineers for a fascinating and in-depth look at the state of open water safety in America.
