Thank You for Your Service
Illinois’ largest total water conference
Welcome to WATERCON 2018
“The amount of knowledge and experience in the water industry in that location at that time is mind boggling.”
T he Illinois Section American Water Works Association’s annual conference, WATERCON18, is quickly approaching. This is the state’s largest conference for water professionals with more training sessions, educational presentations,
equipment and technology exhibits, competitions, and attendees than you’ll find anywhere else. At this time, the planning is well underway and, I can safely say, the program is going to be bigger than ever. You won’t want to miss it!
Our theme for WATERCON18 is ‘Honoring Our Veterans.’ We will pay tribute to our nation’s veterans while we enjoy the conference events. Our keynote speaker, Karen Baetzel, an air force veteran, will offer some leadership tips and encouragement. On Monday, we are offering com-plimentary one-day registration to the conference for unemployed or underemployed military veterans in an effort to help them find a potential transition into a job in the water industry.
Chris Ulm, P.E.Chair 2017–2018 Illinois Section AWWA
The technical program is again packed with presentations by experts in the water profession. Topics include leadership, engineering, treatment, water loss, women in water, source water, and safety and security, covering every aspect of the total water spectrum. Also included will be presentations by regulators and others on new and pending regulations. Our peers will be providing case studies on how they approached some trying new regulations and requirements. The Technical Committee has assembled an educational and training program that is second to none, and they have organized the agenda and room assignments to make it easier for you to maximize what you get out of the conference.
The Exhibit Hall, continuing to expand to more parts of the conference center, will feature everything you could possibly need, including new technologies, proven tools and equipment, and expert knowledge and advice from the manufacturers and their representatives. With more than 150 exhibits, you are sure to find more than a few things you never knew existed and won’t know how you did without.
The competitions have really grown over the years. Not only in number of events, but also in the number of teams competing. Again this year, WATERCON18 will feature Top Ops, Meter Madness, Hydrant Hysteria, and the Tapping Contest. The friendly competition while contestants show off their incredible abilities is always a joy to watch.
Perhaps most importantly, your peers are going to be there. The amount of knowledge and experience in the water industry in that location at that time is mind boggling. There is sure to be someone who’s already tackled that problem you’re struggling with. This is your opportunity to chat with them over a coffee, while looking at the tools and equipment they used, or the approach they took to solve the problem. Or, maybe you are the one who has that much-needed guidance to help someone else. We’ll buy the coffee while you two network!
Please don’t delay. Check out the rest of the incredible details in this pre-conference program and get registered to attend. I can’t wait to see you in Springfield in March!
ALL SESSIONS earn training credits for Operator Certification renewal and PDH credits.
WATERCON 2018 | PRE-CONFERENCE PROGRAM & REGISTRATION2
T he word hero gets kicked around a lot today. Movie stars, celebrities, sports figures – famous, beautiful, talented people whose names are easy to recognize. Veterans, police officers, and teachers get called heroes a lot too... But are they really heroes?
Join retired Navy Captain and all-around BattleAxe Karen Baetzel as we take another look at what has happened to the word “hero” and hear her take on the very nature of heroism through four true stories, which might make you think of your own story in the water industry.
Karen Baetzel has a unique background of military, non-profit, and corporate leadership and has dedicated her efforts to sharing the lessons of servant leadership and inspired living, both to pay it back and pay it forward.
Capt. Baetzel retired after 30 years of commissioned service in the United States Navy, as one of the Navy’s most senior female Naval Aviators. She is also one of the few Naval Aviators of either gender to qualify as an Aircraft Commander in fly helicopters, propeller and jet aircraft, amassing more than 2,000 military flight hours in six aircraft types and serving aboard seven ships.
After her Commanding Officer tour, she served on the elite Navy Leadership Training Team for senior officers, and specialized in defense emergency preparedness and disaster response. Karen also specialized in defense emergency preparedness and disaster response, serving at the state level and in the Offices of the Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon. She was a military responder to numerous national emergencies, including the 9/11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina.
She is a former newspaper columnist, certified international mediator, and co-author of three books. She has co-authored or contributed to books including World’s Best Kept Public Speaking Secrets with Peter Fogel in 2009, Stepping Stones to Success, coauthored with Deepak Chopra, Jack Canfield, and Dr. Denis Waitley, published in 2010, and Military Fly Moms, published in 2012. Karen holds undergraduate degrees in Business Management and Economics and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the prestigious Naval War College.
After successful engagements in the corporate world, Karen went on to found her own business, BattleAxe Consulting Services in 2007. She now serves an international client base in leadership training and development, and homeland security and defense consulting.

New This Year!
Two US presidents, Carter and Reagan, have sat with Charles King to be drawn by the cartoonist. Even Colonel Sanders of KFC sat for Charles. He averages 30 to 60 drawings per hour, but his real talent is the humor that he tries to include in each drawing he does. Follow him as he locates in various areas of the Exhibit Hall. For more information about Charles King, visit www.drawUSA.com.
