I think of the ten lepers in the Gospel who were
healed by Jesus. They approach him and, keeping their
distance, they call out: “Jesus, Master, have mercy on
us!” (Lk 17:13). They are sick, they need love and
strength, and they are looking for someone to heal
them. Jesus responds by freeing them from their
disease. Strikingly, however, only one of them comes
back, praising God and thanking him in a loud voice.
Jesus notes this: ten asked to be healed and only one
returned to praise God in a loud voice and to acknowl-
edge that he is our strength. Knowing how to give
thanks, to give praise for everything that the Lord has
done for us.
Today let us all ask ourselves whether we are afraid of
what God might ask, or of what he does ask. Do I let
myself be surprised by God, as Mary was, or do I re-
main caught up in my own safety zone: in forms of ma-
terial, intellectual or ideological security, taking ref-
uge in my own projects and plans? Do I truly let God
into my life? How do I answer him?
Pienso en los diez leprosos del Evangelio curados
por Jesús: salen a su encuentro, se detienen a lo lejos
y le dicen a gritos: “Jesús, maestro, ten compasión de
nosotros” (Lc 17,13). Están enfermos, necesitados de
amor y de fuerza, y buscan a alguien que los cure. Y
Jesús responde liberándolos a todos de su enferme-
dad. Llama la atención, sin embargo, que solamente
uno regrese alabando a Dios a grandes gritos y dando
gracias. Jesús mismo lo indica: diez han dado gritos
para alcanzar la curación y uno solo ha vuelto a dar
gracias a Dios a gritos y reconocer que en él está
nuestra fuerza. Saber agradecer, saber alabar al Señor
por lo que hace por nosotros.
Preguntémonos hoy todos nosotros si tenemos miedo
de lo que el Señor pudiera pedirnos o de lo que nos
está pidiendo. ¿Me dejo sorprender por Dios, como
hizo María, o me cierro en mis seguridades,
seguridades materiales, seguridades intelectuales, se-
guridades ideológicas, seguridades de mis proyectos?
¿Dejo entrar a Dios verdaderamente en mi vida?
¿Cómo le respondo?

T oday's readings speak to us of "thankfulness". How many times a day do you say "Thank you God", when something
goes right? I find myself saying those words and then realizing I should be saying them a lot more often!! Do I thank God for the beautiful morning when I am walking my dog, or for the food I have for the three meals a day? In the second reading today, we hear a foreigner who was healed, not only express faith in Elisha's God, he also began to follow that God. Being mindful is not always that easy and yet Pope Francis reminds us: "Jesus did not come to teach a philosophy or an ideology, but rather a way, a journey to be undertaken with him, and we learn the way as we go, by walking." Live that way and say clearly, "Thank you God". These Sundays in Oct. we have the different ministries in the Placita with information on what they do. I hope you will take the time to stop by and see if there is a ministry that might excite your faith. So let's be patient with ourselves, the world, and those around us.

Las lecturas de hoy nos hablan sobre el “agradecimiento.” ¿Cuántas veces en el día le das gracias a Dios cuando te va bien? ¡Me encuentro diciendo estas palabras y luego reflexionando que las debo decir más seguido. ¿Le doy gracias a Dios por la mañana hermosa al
caminar mi perro, o por las tres comidas del día? El día de hoy escuchamos de un extranjero que fue sanado, quien no solamente le dio gracias, pero también siguió a Dios. El estar conscientes no es siempre fácil y el Papa Francisco nos recuerda, “Jesús no vino a enseñarnos filosofía ni ideología, más bien un camino, un caminar con Jesús así como él mismo nos enseñó. Vivan de esta manera y digan, “te damos gracias Señor.” Estos domingo en octubre tenemos diferentes ministerios en la Placita con diferente información de lo que hacen. Espero pueden hacer tiempo para ir y ver si hay in ministerio que les podría ayudar en su fe. Así que seamos pacientes con el mundo, con nuestros prójimos y a con todos en nuestro alrededor.

St. Agatha Ministries hosting in the Placita. This is a great opportunity for ministries to showcase their functions and recruit
new volunteers. Different ministries will host each Sunday and we would like you to be part of the excitement and get to
