After fourteen years since Edmunds birth andsome ten after the death of her second daughter,Emilia was in a difficult situation. She was forty yearsold and in bad health: she had serious kidney problemsand her heart was progressively giving way because of acongenital condition.

The political situation of the country becameincresingly critical, as a consequence of the recentlyterminated World War I. The family lived with a bareminimum in a situation of uncertainty and with thefears of a new war.

In these terrible circumstances Emilia becameaware of being pregnant again. It was possible for apregnant woman to have recourse to an abortion and, although with difficulty, there were people ready tocarry it out.
