HSBC WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS ROUND-UP

TRIANGULAR INTERCLUB GAME

THANK YOU, BOB TAN!*

Page 2: THANK YOU, BOB TAN!
Page 3: THANK YOU, BOB TAN!

I would like to take this opportunity to convey my heartfelt thanks to the passion and dedication of Bob Tan and Helen Tan, our retiring Club Captain and Lady Captain, respectively. After having served the Club for 10 years they will be stepping down along with Greens Committee members Ben Low and Rickard Hogberg. I thank all of them for their invaluable contribution in bringing the Club to where it is today. I’m thankful that Bob has graciously agreed to continue serving SGC on the Tanjong Redevelopment Committee.

The General Committee (GC) for the new term commencing 1 April 2015 has been appointed. Dr Wong Yik Mun and Lyn Sen will assume the roles of Captain and Lady Golf Captain, respectively. Please join me in congratulating Yik Mun and Lyn.

The rest of the new GC members are familiar names and faces. I look forward to working with them for the next two years to bring the Club to an even higher level of recognition among the golfing fraternity. The two most pressing issues at hand that the GC will look into are the Tanjong redevelopment and land lease renewal.

It’s May, and we are nearly halfway through the year. To say that time flies is an understatement. Don’t you sometimes wish that time would slow down especially when you’re witnessing something as immensely exciting as the HSBC Women’s Champions? I’m certain you will agree with me that this year’s tournament served

up one of the most thrilling finales! Just imagine the world’s top-3 players all equally accomplished, playing in the same flight, battling it out on our testy Serapong Course? It’s a scenario that’s definitely not par for the course in any tournament, be it the PGA or the LPGA!

We were indeed very lucky to have hosted another successful HSBC Women’s Champions event last March 5 to 8 with the triumvirate of Inbee Park, Lydia Ko and Stacy Lewis providing final-day drama that kept the crowd in suspense. My heartfelt congratulations to Inbee for a flawless display of golf and for a well-deserved win!

Speaking of the crowd, this year’s event attracted a record of 29,038 spectators, surpassing 2013’s turnout of 27,238. This speaks volumes of how the event has piqued the interest of many Singaporeans and visitors from neighbouring countries to watch the tournament first-hand. As always, I thank members for their support at the event. I am also grateful to all our staff for having given it their best to put on a great show for the whole world to see.

While discussions for the 2016 HSBC Women’s Champions are still ongoing, members can look forward to SGC hosting the SEA Games event in June and the inaugural SMBC Singapore Open come January 2016. It gives me tremendous pride that our Club has been the unanimous choice venue of these events, which in turn places SGC at the forefront of golf in the region and the world.

At the time of this writing, we would have just concluded our Members’ Townhall session on 30 April to share and discuss the issues of the new Tanjong redevelopment and the lease renewal exercise. I would like to thank members who have given their feedback and suggestions both to GC members and at the Townhall. For the benefit of those who were not able to attend the session, we had shared with members on both the progress on the Club’s application to the Singapore Land

Authority (SLA) to extend the leases of the Serapong and Tanjong Courses to 2030 and 2040, as well as the progress of the Tanjong Course redevelopment.

On the matter of lease renewal, the Chief Valuer’s Office (CVO) has provided us an indicative valuation sum. This has allowed us to plan ahead and address the issues of cost apportionment and the members’ contribution sum required for all of us to enjoy the Club for the extended lease period.

The actual amount to be contributed by the members for both The New Tanjong and lease extension is $34,700 to $36,400, inclusive of GST. The actual amount to be contributed will be finalised when SLA confirms the amount of lease premium to be paid. The details on the Redevelopment and Lease Renewal Costs will be sent to you and also presented in the next issue of FORE!.

Before I conclude, I’d like to report that members contributed a total of $66,000 towards the Annual Staff Ang Pow Fund. A total of 187 staff received Ang Pows, with the majority receiving the auspicious red packet of $368 each. At the Lo Hei gathering for the staff, they collectively thanked the members for their generosity with a shout and wish of “Huat Ah!”

As for our fund-raising drive for the benefit of Assisi Hospice, members raised a total of $54,120 during the 40th Anniversary celebrations. SGC will match this contribution dollar for dollar, hence, the total sum of $133,813 will be presented to the Assisi Hospice in aid of their patients.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank all members for their continued generosity toward our staff and toward great causes.

Happy Golfing!

Low Teo PingPresident

ANG POW POWER!

BRIGHTLY-TOGGED PARTICIPANTS of the annual Ang Pow Game came ready to dazzle their team mates – and their opponents. The Club had never seen such glorious colours in a long time, but no one was complaining! Instead, onlookers were full of praise as the teams made their way to Serapong Course that Saturday afternoon on 28 February during the Lunar New Year season.

Players were raring to go at this event played in conjunction with the Monthly Medals. They were confident that after the game on the course, there would be fun and games at the Clubhouse. Of course, no Chinese New Year celebration would be complete without the God of Fortune, lion dancers, oranges and lohei for luck, and Yam Seng. We are happy to report there were lots!

Bright, breezy and ready to kick off the Year Of The Goat with a friendly game!

SENTOSA GOLF CLUB set the ball rolling, being organisers of the inaugural Triangular Inter-Club Game. Taking part in this maiden event from Friday 20 March to Sunday 22 March were SGC, Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club and New South Wales Golf Club (NSWGC).

Before the games, our overseas guests from Hong Kong and Sydney set out to familiarise themselves with our “terrain”. Fortunately, the weather was not as cruel as usual. In fact, it was as kind as it could possibly get on the three days our guests were here. Each club sent 15 best players (a total of 45 players for the three-ball flight) for the friendly match.

Weather aside, the fast greens made the competition tough but our NSWGC guests easily conquered the course and emerged the winner with a total score of 667 points for two matches. Win or no, our guests said they enjoyed good golf and had a great time with new and not-as-new friends.

Captains Bob Tan of SGC, David Hui of Clearwater Bay and Phil Banister of NSWGC gave this arrangement of three clubs getting together for two rounds of memorable golf a clear thumbs-up. And naturally they look forward to more seasons of this friendly competition.

The next Triangular Inter-Club Game will be in the good hands of NSWGC. See you in beautiful Australia next!

DR TONY ONG

“I am glad to be part of the Triangular Inter-club League where I get to meet old friends from Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club and establish new acquaintances with members of the New South Wales Golf Club.”

MR PATRICK HARRIGAN

“The Triangular Inter-Club League is a great idea and I believe all participants had a wonderful time. I hope this is the first of many and look forward to participating in the upcoming events over the next few years at NSWGC and Clearwater Bay.”

MR VIVIAN SINGH

“Not only did we have fun but we also enjoyed the spirit of competition among us. The course was in immaculate condition. All finer details for the event like F&B, logistics and so on were well looked after. As expected, it was another perfect arrangement from the Sentosa Golf Club Management team and staff.”

MR KON TSAOUSIDIS

“We feel very fortunate and honoured to be invited to experience the championship course in tournament condition since Sentosa has just hosted the HSBC Women’s Champions 2015. We enjoyed the camaraderie with new and old acquaintances. We, especially myself, are looking forward to the next League in 2016 at our home ground.”

SELETAR COUNTRY CLUB (SCC) drew first blood as it beat Sentosa Golf Club’s team 5-9 in the opening game of the 2015 SGA Inter-Club League played at Changi Golf Club on 12 April.

SGC fielded players in the Premier, A, B, Senior and Ladies’ Divisions. Our team may have suffered defeat in most divisions, but the SGC Ladies Team kept the flag flying by scoring a one-point victory over the SCC ladies. Our B Division players also managed to square the match with their opponents.

There is hope yet, as the League has 12 more legs to go before a new champion is crowned. Soldier on, Team SGC!

GOOD TO SEE YOU AGAIN, MR SCOTT!

Above and below: SGC’s Agronomy Team lining up to greet their friend, champion golfer Adam Scott, who won the Singapore Open in 2005, 2006 and 2010

ADAM SCOTT FOUNDATIONThe Adam Scott Foundation supports and offers opportunities to young people in Asia. Based in Singapore, it’s an extension of his Australian Foundation which provides young people with a greater range of options to enable them to enhance their careers and possibilities in life. In line with Scott’s vision, the foundation funds various projects and awards grants benefiting needy children, underprivileged and disadvantaged youth, and golf-associated charities, foundations and programmes.

IT WAS A HOMECOMING of sorts when three-time Singapore Open champion Adam Scott graced Sentosa with his presence on 24 January 2015. The 2014 World No. 1 was here for a corporate event and as part of the event, conducted a golf clinic before the afternoon shotgun game. He also had time to say hello to members on the range and back at the Clubhouse.

Adam Scott is as well-loved at the Club as he is admired by his golfing fans worldwide. Despite his huge success, this popular, not to mention good-looking, golfer has remained grounded. No surprise then that the people rejoiced when he became World No. 1 last year. It was also

the year he tied the knot with Marie Kojzar, a Swedish architect. The couple now have a daughter, Bo Vera Scott.

Currently 8th in the world ranking, Scott has been busy playing on the PGA Tour; his next tournament is the US Open in June. Still, he makes sure he has time for charity work through the Adam Scott Foundation Asia. He said: “As I travelled the world playing professional golf and getting to live my dream, it became apparent to me how fortunate I was to be offered the opportunity of following my chosen career path, but not everyone has that fortune. For me, bringing happiness and hope into a young person’s life is so rewarding.”

MR LEE KUAN YEW’S VISION FOR SENTOSA

“I hope the Sentosa Golf Club will maintain its unique assets, all the comforts of proximity to a city, but with all the quiet and seclusion of the wooded hillside...ˮ

~ Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in his speech at the opening of Sentosa Golf Club in 1974. That afternoon,

he teed off on the Tanjong Course

FEATURE GOLF

Singapore’s first Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, had a vision for the island of Sentosa – even likening it to an island in the South Pacific – and saw a great future ahead for it as an idyllic retreat.

THE PRIME MINISTER’S ADDRESS AT THE OFFICIAL OPENING

OF THE SENTOSA GOLF CLUB, SUNDAY 14 JULY 1974.

On Sentosa, the noise and bustle of Singapore seems remote and cut off. But for huge oil tankers riding an anchor, I can imagine myself to be on an island in the South Pacific.

Sentosa Golf Course has several attractive features. There is the sea. There is no roar of motor traffic, no loudspeakers as at the Singapore Island Country Club, blaring forth messages to members out on the golf courses. Incidentally, this is something which should be forbidden by law.

It is important to keep Sentosa this way, free from motor traffic. There should be more trees and palms. Buildings should be kept low, hugging the profile of the island. Then Sentosa will remain an idyllic retreat, albeit a crowded one at weekends and holidays, with people seeking the swimming lagoons and tourist and picnic spots.

However, the temptation is for Sentosa Development Corporation to stick a high-rise

building up, for maximum returns on their investments. Then the air of a remote retreat may be destroyed.

I hope Sentosa Development Corporation will try to keep this island as a retreat for those who seek a place where they can walk, without competing with cars, lorries and buses; a place where they can swim in the sea without bothering about tide-tables; and, most important, a place where they can get away from the noise of machines.

The generator that serves the earth satellite station emits a small, but high-pitched hum. This, I hope, can be muted.

In declaring open this golf club and its club-house, I hope the Sentosa Golf Club will maintain its unique assets, all the comforts of proximity to a city, but with all the quiet and seclusion of the wooded hillside, and a glorious view of a wide expanse of the sea.

INBEE CONQUERS SERAPONG!WORLD NO. 2 INBEE PARK shot a round of 2-under par 70 to win the 2015 HSBC Women’s Champions two shots clear of second placed Lydia Ko. The result saw the Korean complete a fourth consecutive bogey-free round to finish 15-under par and claim the winner’s cheque of US$210,000.

Speaking after her victory, a delighted Park said: “It feels great. I thought Singapore wasn’t the place that I could win a tournament. Every year has just been really hard to me but last year was the first year I actually had a good finish and that gave me a lot of confidence.

“I still can’t believe that I didn’t make any bogeys for 72 holes. If I was afraid of the bogeys, I'd probably make bogeys but I thought, whatever happens, it’s just meant to be. I just tried to focus on my game and not think about so many other things.”

Speaking about a bet she made with her father that would see her make US$500 for every birdie, but pay out double for each bogey, Park added: “I just took the bet, and it ended up really nicely! It gave me extra motivation, I guess. It’s so fun and it gave me something else to concentrate on. It’s good to have a family here and they are a big energy for me.”

Gracious defeat for the restFor World No. 1 Lydia Ko, it just wasn’t to be. After what was a slow start by her standards, she brought herself right back into contention in Rounds 2 and 3, but wasn’t able to reproduce

the magic that saw her claim back to back victories prior to her arrival in Singapore. Playing an aggressive round on the challenging Serapong course, Ko carded three bogeys and five birdies to match Park’s 2-under score of 70.

Despite the result, the 17-year-old Ko bears all the hallmarks of a true champion. The New Zealander managed a smile as she came off course before signing autographs and posing for pictures with the hordes of fans assembled by the 18th.

Speaking after her round, Ko said: “I started out well on my front nine, shooting 3-under through my first seven holes. Just things didn’t go well from 8 to 13 – I just lost three shots. On this course, it’s not that hard to lose shots. There are some lip-outs and there are so many close ones. But I finished well with a birdie on 18. I had a great stretch of three weeks and I would have never imagined to have one second place and two wins. So it’s great! This is my best finish here in Singapore so I’m really looking forward to coming back next year,” she added.

World No. 3 and 2013 champion Stacy Lewis wasn’t so lucky. The Texan landed a ball in a palm tree on the 10th, necessitating a drop, and a wayward third shot on the 18th in the water hazard saw her drop another, finishing in third place, four shots behind the champion.

Tied in fourth place were Shanshan Feng (China), So Yeon Ryu (South Korea) and Azahara Munoz (Spain). All three players were in consistent form all week, finishing at 10-under par.

“Watching the HSBC Women’s Champions is more important than running my business, haha. I feel very much at ease at the SGC Hospitality Suite, enjoying friendly interaction with my fellow members and Club staff offering me the warmest hospitality.”

TIMOTHY YONG

“I like the accessibility of the new layout at the SGC Hospitality Suite. I can just walk out to the golf course without having to take the lift or stairs. The spaciousness of the open-air space in front is perfect as long as it does not rain. The air-conditioned area seems smaller and I am concerned whether or not it will be huge enough to accommodate the Sunday’s crowd.”

RONALD PEREIRA

Ronald and his wife were present on all four days of the tournament. They were two of the many who were thankful to Management for providing an air-conditioned suite for members to cool down after a walk round the course and where they could return to the comfort of the air-conditioned Hospitality Suite when the sun was blazing and it got too hot.

“I enjoyed the privilege as an SGC member – we have a cosy suite to enjoy the tournament and to catch up with our golf kakis with a drink or some snacks. I like the new location; it is more accessible to the golf course, and we don't have to take the lift or stairs.”

DR CHARLES CHOU CHUNG SHIH

Dr Chou, 99, has never missed out watching the national events held at SGC. Accompanied by a group of close friends such as Mr Johnny Lee, he enjoyed every moment of this event.

“I am getting older but am still looking forward to be part of these events. I especially enjoy watching the HSBC Women’s Champions right at our Club’s doorstep. I feel fortunate to be with close friends to be able to enjoy a good view of the tournament in the comfort of an air-conditioned suite.”

WE COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU...

HSBC WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS 2015 would not have been the success it was without our esteemed partners. In his note thanking HSBC’s Guy Harvey-Samuel and IMG’s Robbie Henchman, SGC President Low Teo Ping wrote: “Thank you for believing in us at Sentosa Golf Club. As you are aware, we are always striving towards excellence and Andy Johnston and his team have again lived up to their mantra

Both the HSBC and IMG heads were full of praise for the event, with Mr Harvey-Samuel saying that “the whole thing from start to finish was outstanding”. Mr Henchman mentioned the fact that many people commented on how marvellous the course and club looked, adding “... it is a true credit to you and your team.  Thank you for your continued support of this world class event...” Here’s to the next event in 2016!

of ‘every day is a golf tournament day’, thus the excellent golf course to support the HSBC Women's Champions.  Sentosa Golf Club is no stranger to hosting events of such international stature and, like you said, we work so well together. We indeed do and also with the rest of the partners, IMG, LPGA and Pico and I can tell you that the staff at SGC have found it such a joy to be involved with your staff. Please convey our appreciation to them.”

MEMBERS’ SURVEY

SENTOSA GOLF CLUB WILL STAGE the 28th SEA Games 2015 (golf event) from Sunday 7 to Friday 12 June. The Serapong Course will be closed during this period for both tournament practice and the competition proper.

During the competition period from Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 June, the Golfing Reception will assist members with arrangements to play at other clubs through the assistance of the Singapore Golf Association. We would like to thank members for your understanding and wish our athletes a fruitful medal haul at the Games.

IN AN EFFORT TO ENHANCE the Island’s emergency response and resilience, Sentosa will soon get its dedicated Fire Station. Construction of the new building has commenced to the left of Serapong hole 10 fairway.

Members may notice the removal of the thin trees within the Sentosa Fire Station site. This is to allow the building of retaining walls facing Serapong Course. The hoarding at the site will be removed next year and in its place boundary fencing will be erected. Members can rest assured that Serapong’s trees outside of the boundary hoarding will not be affected by the ongoing construction.

A SERIES OF SGC MEMBERS’ survey will be conducted once every three months to give the Club a better feel of the service quality rendered to members and your guests. This quarterly satisfaction survey replaces the biennial members’ survey in the past.

The surveys will be simple and easy to complete and will not take more than 10 minutes to fill. They will be collected from members at the Golfers’ Terrace, with each survey focusing only on either F&B or Golf services. Please give us your feedback to improve during the upcoming survey.

EARLY THIS YEAR, we received our auditor’s report on the charity donations which our Club had contributed to Assisi Hospice for the period 17 November 2014 to 31 January 2015. This report from KPMG LLP is to ensure best practices were carried out for the disbursement to various charities, in particular in conjunction with Sentosa Golf Club’s 40th Anniversary Celebrations.

As part of the note from KPMG read: Our engagement was undertaken in accordance with the Singapore Standard on Related Services applicable to agreed-upon procedures engagements, SSRS 4400. The procedure was performed solely to assist you (Sentosa Golf Club Management) in your submission of the Statement to the Assisi Hospice.

The findings showed that the collections from the Club’s golf members and guests from the said period amounting to S$25,573 agree to the bank statement, credit card settlement reports and member's statement of accounts and the Statement (charity donation). Included in the Statement are (a) total donation amounting to $54, 120 based on billings to the Club's members who did not opt out from the donation pledge by 31 January 2015; and the Club's dollar-for-dollar donation amounting to $54, 120.

Members whose opt-out forms were received between 17 November 2014 and 31 January 2015 were excluded from the total donation pledge.

MEMBERS’ WISHES FOR EX-CAPTAIN BOB TAN WILLIAM LIM TAO-E

“I respect Bob Tan very much as he cares a lot for staff and their welfare. He is also extremely friendly and offers lots of concern to all members, especially the new ones. For example, Bob helps link them up with other members for a round of golf to break the ice.”

TIMOTHY YONG

“Thanks Captain for the camaraderie on and off the course. You’re not just a smiley face, you also offer us a good listening ear and really made changes for the better. I’m sure Dr Wong Yik Mun is now strung at the shoes you’ve left for him to fill. Happy Retirement and welcome to the rank of Ordinary Members.”

LYNDA LEE

“I respect Bob for his great leadership, especially in leading SGC to its premium status as one of the best golf clubs in the Asian region. During his leadership, SGC was nominated to be the best golf course by the Golf Monthly Magazine and Golf Digest Singapore. Sentosa also hosted The Open Championship International Final Qualifying, Singapore Open and HSBC Women’s Champions. Bob is very popular as he is always friendly and unassuming. We will miss him as a Captain. Fortunately, he is still a member and thus we can continue to see him at the Club and on the course.”

Thank You For A Decade of Leadership
