A letter from Fr. Peter Parish News 2

QUIET, BUT EFFECTIVE The members of the Parish of the Holy Eucharist take to heart and effectively put into practice the Lord’s mandate: “To whom much has been given, much is expected.” And to our credit, we do this quietly and effectively. To briefly summarize: ~ The Parish of the Holy Eucharist has been supporting our sister parish in Haiti (the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere) for many years. This past year, through the free-will door collections at each of our churches and under the guidance of our parish’s Social Justice Commission, continued regular financial support has been provided. In 2017 our parish financed the purchase and installation of a new generator. ~ Our parish has been very responsive to the growing needs of needy persons in our parish and surrounding area through our Parish Needy Fund. Very often referrals for assistance are received from area social service agencies. Needs have often increased because of budget cutbacks on state and local levels. Each request for funding is thoroughly vetted by members of the Parish Social Justice Commission before approval is given. Needs addressed include: rent shortfalls, short-term transportation needs, needed food purchases. It is heartening to know that, when the Needy Fund experienced a perilously low balance, generous parishioners came forward to replenish the fund. ~ The Thanksgiving and Christmas Seasons generate much outreach by our parishioners through distribution of Thanksgiving food baskets to needy families and individuals. Many parishioners, from children enrolled in our Faith Formation Programs to seniors who find fulfillment in offering their available time to help others, are responsive to this Thanksgiving tradition. Many individuals and families were helped with Thanksgiving and Christmas food bags brimming with delightful items. ~ The Christmas Giving Trees at each church generate wonderful interest and response by providing clothing, toys, food gift cards. The Christmas Giving Tree program also coordinates with Catholic Charities Maine in helping immigrants and refugees and with the Knights of Columbus in reaching out to veterans at the Togus VA Center in Augusta. ~ Throughout the year, but most especially in the colder seasons, the Parish of the Holy Eucharist, through the Cumberland Wood Bank, provides fire wood to families and individuals. The Social Justice Commission of the Parish of the Holy Eucharist is thankful to all who have participated in and supported our efforts. We pray that the New Year will see continued enthusiasm and generous support. Indeed, to whom much has been given, much has been realized! Fr. Peter (for the Social Justice Commission)

Not a day of Holy Obligation

Mass Times St. Gregory 8:30 am

Sacred Heart 9:00 am

Welcome our new parishioners… John & Jennifer Souther and children of Freeport Peter and Kelly DeMartini and children of Freeport John Marcelynas and children of Yarmouth Shema and Sabu Kottaram and children of Falmouth Mary Kuebler of Falmouth Reny and Jodie Kandel of Gray

Hansen, Henry Tanguay, Raymond Dubois, Carrie Hansen, Bernard Devine

A note from Fr. Dan… Since Deacon Dennis has moved out of the Sacred Heart rectory, it has remained empty. It now seems that we have an opportunity for a diocesan priest to move there. However, there is nothing in terms of furniture, appliances or household items. I have asked the Knights of Columbus to coordinate furnishing the apartment for the priest with any items parishioners would like to donate that they are no longer using. After that, we will look into seeing what the parish needs to buy. Priests usually do not own these items but instead use what is available in a rectory. It will be wonderful to have a priest living on the property once again and helping out on a limited basis. Please contact the office if you have any items the Knights of Columbus could go and

pick up. -- Thank you, Fr. Daniel
