Welcome Back
Welcome to 2020 and the beginning of a new year at Thangool State School. We had a
wonderful first week with all students settling in well to their classrooms. It was great seeing
returning and new families. A huge thank you to our wonderful staff in ensuring our classrooms
were ready for our students and to our supportive parents for having everything ready to go for
your child.
School Mission Statement
Our school mission statement forms the basis of all decisions made by the school. Our first
question is always “what impact does this have on our students?” Please see our mission
statement below;
Improvement Agenda-Successful Learners through a focus on Writing.
This year our school will be focusing on writing. Mrs Lyn Geraghty will be leading our staff
through an inquiry cycle, looking at evidence and best practice to improve our students writing
across the school. This will build on our spelling focus in 2018/2019 and the professional
development staff have been involved in.

Year 6 Badge Ceremony
On Monday 17th February at 2:30pm, we will hold a special parade to introduce our year 6 leaders and present them with their
leadership badges. All parents and community members are invited to attend.
Parent Information Session
Following the badge ceremony we will hold our parent information session at 3:10pm. Please see schedule below. We do re-
lease some classes clash for parents and we apologise in advance. If you have children in timeslots that clash please feel free
to pop in before or after to see their teacher.
Kids Shed
We were recently successful with a CS Energy grant, $20 000 to revamp our ‘Kids Shed.’ This is very exciting and will kick start
our playground transformation. Until our revamp is complete, the Kids Shed has joined with maker space in our library. Each
lunch break will see our kids shed open with an activity for students supervised by a staff member.
Breakfast Program
Last year we were successful for a grant to start a Breakfast Club. Our Breakfast Program coordinated by Chappy Laura will
begin in week 3 on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Initially we will start with toast with special breakfasts advertised throughout
the term.
Spelling Mastery
Our school runs a spelling program 4 times per week where students from grade 1-6 are placed into spelling classes based on
their needs. As part of this program and stated on our booklists children require a spelling mastery book. Invoices for cost of
book have been distributed to students.
2020 Year 5/6 Camp
Our 5/6 Camp will be in term 4, week 1 at Camp Fairbairn. More details will come out later in the year.

Brisbane International Schools Tennis Challenge
9th and 10th January 2020
Over the holidays, we had two teams from Thangool School competing in Brisbane at the Brisbane International Schools Ten-
nis Red Ball Challenge. Thangool Thunder (Mixed) and Thangool All Stars (Girls) played some amazing tennis against school
s from across Queensland and Northern Territory.
Thangool Thunder finished in 15th place out of 20 teams and Thangool All Stars finished 10th our of 15 teams. The teams
walked through the players tunnel , had their photos taken on Pat Rafter Arena and walked around the centre court. Amaz-
ing memories that will last a lifetime for these students. We are super proud of the sportsmanship that they displayed, their
determination (against tough competition) and the mateship towards each other. Well Done!
