As per estimate there are more than 10000 Thalassemia children in Gujarat and each
year nearly 1000 Thalassemia children being added in it. Thalassemia Major is one of the
disease which is incurable and has no medicine is available to cure it. This disease is
genetically driven for children from their parents, if both of them are Thalassemia Minor.
Thalassemia Major Children hardly lives for 10 to 15 years and they require frequent Blood
transfusion, Since there is no medicine or treatment available to save the affected persons, it is
found very significant to prevent it from inheriting this disease from their parents by avoiding
marriages between two Thalassemia Minors.
Indian Red Cross Society has started Thalassemia Prevention Programme from Sept. 2004 in
which various Universities, Colleges and Schools of Gujarat have been covered. Till date we
have screened more than 22 Lac students where in we found 4% to 5% Thalassemia Minor in
each community. To make Thalassemia Prevention Programme more successful we get the
support from Government of Gujarat as well as from private sectors.
