COMMUNITY

I am constantly reminded of the wonderful community spirit in this

school when I see parents responding to a call for assistance. It does

truly take a village to raise a child and when community members

selflessly give of their valuable time, I appreciate that I am blessed to

be connected with this school. I also appreciate the way that families

throw themselves into a challenge – like the dress up day where

Jacob’s whole family embraced the occasion. (see pg 6)

Special thanks also to Norm and Leni Harrison for donating a new bed

for us for sick bay…and for then going out and purchasing us a new

mattress that meant we could dispose of the old setting. They threw

in a thorough clean of sick bay and now everything is looking pristine

and new. Sick Bay no longer makes me feel sick!!

Thanks also to Leni for servicing what we thought was a broken

vacuum cleaner, which is now fully operational for our Working Bee

on Friday 16th June at 3.15 onwards where we will be giving our

Computer Room a complete clean. We will need MANY hands for a

very short time and these are the jobs we will need to do:

Take down the metal grills from the windows

Clean the windows

Clean tables and computers

De-cobweb

Put together a shelf that was dismantled

General clean and tidy

If we get lots of people, we should be finished very quickly and be

able to make the computer room a MUCH nicer place for our

children to learn. PLEASE RSVP FOR CATERING ASAP to Janet or me.

MINDFULNESS

Thanks for all the families who took on the mindfulness challenge and

it was wonderful to see the children embrace it at school. The Preps

really immersed themselves and were so calm when I went up there,

that they seemed to be completely in Zen Heaven! Directly after

though, they were immersed in their writing and the benefits of the

mindfulness session were immediately apparent. (see photos on pg 6)

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT CONT.

COMMUNITY LINKS

The Year 3 students accompanied me to the Over 55 session at the Community Centre where they spent time with the

elders in our community and were taught the fine skills required for bowls. Some budding young bowlers amongst this

group!!

WEBSITE

There is a lot of new content on our website and while it is far from complete, we invite your comments.

RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS

A group Year 4 and 5 students accompanied some parents and me to the leadership session at Yarra Hills where they

were wonderful ambassadors for our school. Thanks to Laura Graham for the photo and to Laura, Kim and Norm for

assistance with transportation.

LOCKDOWN DRILL

Two education police officers were kind enough to attend CPS while we conducted a lockdown drill and spent some

time with the juniors and seniors after to discuss their role in the community and how to keep safe. This tied in very

nicely with the P-2 study on people in our neighbourhood. (see photo pg 6 )

In addition the children also ventured out to investigate some of the small businesses in Coldstream and had a

wonderful time exploring the inner sanctum of some of the familiar traders.

It was wonderful having Jamie Hamilton in at school umpiring for the interschool footy last Friday. It was really

impressive to see the way that he was coaching children on both teams as he went along and acknowledging good play

wherever he saw it.

Thanks to Noelene McLeod for the interschool sports photos on page 7

CHILD SAFE POLICY.

We‘re also including a copy of our Child Safe Policy and Standard #4

Phillippa Adgemis – Acting Principal

In the interests of compliance from the department we now have

another hoop to jump though!!!!!!

Moving forward we will now need to inform our car insurance companies

to add a proof of indemnity to carry children in our cars. That evidence

will need to be with Janet on the school records. This applies to staff and

parents.

As we are already struggling to get enough drivers to allow us to offer

the diverse extra-curricular activities on offer at this school, we are very

afraid that we will need to curtail many if not all of them.

We are a small school, so we BEG you not only to get your WWC which is

free of charge, but also to consider getting comprehensive insurance and

evidence of indemnity to enable us to continue to offer your children the

opportunities that CPS staff offer them.

SPORTS REPORT

Hi, this is your interschool sport football captains, Callum, Deacon and Jorja. On Friday the 2nd of June,

Coldstream.P.S played a football match against Yarra Glen.P.S.

The scores were, C.P.S- 11.5 -71 vs Y.G.P.S- 3.6 -24. Coldstream won by 47 points, everyone played really

well. The Most Valuable Player award was awarded to Wyatt Lowe for an outstanding effort with never

giving up for the ball! We would like to give a shout out to Keera and Hayley for going in hard for the footy

and especially to Hayley for actually going onto to the field and playing footy against a bunch of boys!!

Overall everyone played well and it was a good game.

Hi we’re Tanesha and Taz the Volley Stars Captains and we nominated Rivah for Most Valuable Player

because she tried her best to run around to get the ball and always caught it if someone missed it. She was

also a really good sport. Good job Rivah! We lost 2 games and won 1, it was a really fun day!

Hi on 2nd of June we had interschool sports. We played netball against Yarra Glen the scores were 6 to 26.

We lost the game but we all tried so hard. The Most Valuable Player for netball went to Katie Harrison

because of her great defending and passing. She did a great job of keeping on her player, making sure her

player was with her. She kept on going and even though we lost she didn’t mind, she was a great sport!

From your captains Jess and Sarah

Transfer of Enrolment Protocol

Lilydale District Network

Approved April 2017

There is an understanding that every school should be able to make provision for all children in the local area and not restrict entry to eligible students or force students to transfer or withdraw from school; except when the student is expelled.

When a school is approached by the family of a student enrolled in a Lilydale District Network school the Principal

should:

Ask families where the student is currently enrolled at the time of making appointments for potential enquiries.

Contact the principal of the Network school before an interview takes place and informs him/her that such an interview or tour may take place with this specific student’s family.

Inform the parent that it is a protocol in the Lilydale District Network for the current school to be informed of an enrolment approach

Inform the parent that they should discuss the reason for considering the transfer with the principal of their current school in order that any unresolved issues can be addressed.

Not make any criticism of other network schools when an interview/tour does take place Be aware that unless the new school is the student’s closest school, a school is not required to accept a

transferred student during the semester. Transfers generally take place at the change of semester. Discretion can of course be exercised in this matter.

It is understood that schools will show prospective families the strong points of their programs and facilities during

enrolment tours.

It is recommended that these protocols apply to students from Upper Yarra SC & Healesville HS. They may also apply

to primary schools near the border of neighbouring networks where feasible.

CHILD SAFE POLICY STANDARD #4

SCHOOL STAFF SELECTION, SUPERVISION AND MANAGEMENT

PRACTICES FOR A CHILD-SAFE ENVIRONMENT

Strong human resources practices promote child safe school environments and reduce the risk of child abuse. Child Safe Standard 4 requires schools to use policies and procedures for recruitment, supervision, training and managing performance that support a child safe school environment. This guide outlines what is required by schools for compliance with Ministerial Order 870. Schools already have a number of recruitment and screening practices that reduce the risk of child abuse. This resource outlines these. New practices apply to all school employees. In being compliant Coldstream Primary School:

Ensures that position descriptions for all new positions advertised from 1 August 2016 include the standard ‘Child Safe Environments’ clause as provided in the ‘Recruitment in Schools’ Guide.

Identifies the actions the school proposes to take, per Standard 1, to promote and embed the Child Safety Code of Conduct in accordance with Standard and articulate the timeframe for this.

Determines the timeframes for DET to oversee and review Standard 4 as part of the school’s Action Plan [Standard 1] and School Child Safe Environments policy [Standard 2].

Background

On 26 November 2015, the Victorian Parliament passed the Child Wellbeing and Safety Amendment (Child Safe Standards) Bill 2015 to introduce seven child safe standards (the Standards) into law. The Standards apply to all organisations involved in child-related work in Victoria. Ministerial Order No. 870 provides the framework for how schools are required to comply with the Standards. Overall responsibility for ensuring compliance rests with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA).

According to the Ministerial Order the following requirements regarding Standard 4 have put into place at Coldstream Primary School:

1. Each job or category of jobs for school staff that involves child connected work has a clear

statement that sets out:

a) the job’s requirements, duties and responsibilities regarding child safety; and

b) the job occupant’s essential or relevant qualifications, experience and attributes in relation to

child safety.

2. All applicants for jobs that involve child connected work for the school are informed about the

school’s child safety practices (including the code of conduct).

Page 14: th The Connection - Coldstream · 4 The Connection Notes you may have missed Sumardi – Master Shadow Puppeteer – Whole School Hot Dog Lunch – Whole School Archery – 5/6M Hooptime

14 The Connection

3. In accordance with any applicable legal requirement or school policy, the school makes

reasonable efforts to gather, verify and record the following information about a person whom it

proposes to engage to perform child connected work:

a) Working with Children Check status, or similar check;

b) proof of personal identity, Police Check or VIT

4. The school may be flexible with the requirements in step (3) above if it has already made

reasonable efforts to gather, verify and record the information set out in steps (3)(a) to (3)(d),

above about a particular individual within the previous 12 months.

5. The school ensures that appropriate supervision or support arrangements are in place in relation

to:

a) the induction of new school staff into the school’s policies, codes, practices, and procedures

governing child safety and child connected work; and

b) monitoring and assessing a job occupant’s continuing suitability for child connected work.

6. The school implements practices that enable the DET to be satisfied that people engaged in child-

connected work perform appropriately in relation to child safety.

Evaluation:

This policy will be reviewed as part of the school’s three- year review cycle.

This policy was last ratified by School Council in....
