Called to Serve
In today’s First Reading, the Lord has His work cut out with the reluctant prophet Ezekiel. Despite Ezekiel’s best efforts to resist, the Spirit entered into him and set him on his feet. Then we hear the Lord speaking to Ezekiel, “I am sending you to the Israelites, rebels who have rebelled against me...Hard of face and obstinate of heart.” The Lord continues, “They shall know that a prophet has been among them.” In spite of himself, Ezekiel is being called to serve.
Hard of face? Obstinate of heart? These are very apt descriptions of the townsfolk we find in the Gospel. Jesus has returned to his hometown of Nazareth and is teaching in the synagogue on the
Sabbath. Many who heard Him refused to believe Him or His works. They objected that these could not come from one they knew to be a carpenter who had grown up among them, the son of Mary. It was just beyond their ability or desire to comprehend. He seemed to be so different from them.
Then Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” In the end, Jesus’ full healing power could not take effect in Nazareth because of the people’s lack of faith.
If we look deep within ourselves, we might be shocked at what we see. Are we reluctant to answer God’s call to serve others? How do we treat others? Are our faces hard and our hearts obstinate? Do we treat others poorly for no reason other than they look different from ourselves? Let us ask the Lord God to open our hearts and soften our outlook. May He grant us the faith and grace to serve others to improve the quality of their lives, and to view and treat others the way that He would.
Today we celebrate the Fourth of July, Independence Day, the day we commemorate the beginning of our country in 1776. Our founding fathers were also called to serve. They willingly served and gave of themselves. To all who serve, and in a special way all those who are serving others in our war on the COVID-19 pandemic, I dedicate this song:
God Bless America
Lyrics by Irving Berlin
"While the storm clouds gather far across the sea, Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free, Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer."
God Bless America, Land that I love. Stand beside her, and guide her Thru the night with a light from above. From the mountains, to the prairies, To the oceans, white with foam, God bless America, My home sweet home.
May God bless each and every man, woman, youngster and child who have served, who have tried to improve the quality of life for others. May they always be blessed by God’s presence in their lives! Amen.

Holy Hour and Benediction
The institution of marriage and family is under attack
in our culture today. This breakdown of marriage has
been devastating to families and society. Do you know
of marriages that are struggling? Families that need
strengthening? Do you have loved ones who have left
the faith? Please join us this Tuesday evening, July 6,
at 6 pm in the church to pray for marriages,
families, vocations and for those who have left the
faith to return to the Sacraments. This is for the
whole family. We will pray this beautiful and powerful
novena together as we call on Our Lady’s intersession
for these and your personal intentions, and have
adoration and Benediction before the Blessed
Sacrament.

Help Stop Taxpayer Abortion
Your voice could help
save millions of lives. The
Hyde Amendment has
protected Americans from
funding abortion for 45
years. It’s credited with
saving the lives of over 2.4
million children to date. Now, powerful members of
Congress want to take away this law that both
Democrats and Republicans have supported for nearly
half a century. Without it, billions of taxpayer dollars
could go to abortion. That means abortions would be
cheaper, easier, and funded with our taxpayer dollars.
It is critically important for Catholics to send a strong
message before Congress moves forward to impose
taxpayer-funded abortion. Because of the incredibly
high stakes, Congress needs to hear from a massive
number of people. We need millions of Catholics to
sign the petition! Please sign at
NoTaxpayerAbortion.com and encourage others to do
the same. Thank you!
Faith: the Next Generation – Pass It On!
Boldly go where many have gone before and help pass on the Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith!
This fall, 1st through 8th-grade students will attend School of Religion classes at Curé to learn more about Jesus
and our Catholic faith. At this time, classes are planned to be in-person and we need more volunteers in the
classroom as Catechists and Aides.
Our parish SOR uses a Flipped Classroom approach:
textbook-learning is done at home with the parents
twice-monthly classes highlight 2-3 topics from the chapters
children are offered opportunities to personally know and love Jesus
For more information, check out the School of Religion webpage
at www.cureofars.com/religioused
If you are interested, please contact Bernadette Myers at 913.521.9361
Classes begin September 2021!
As a long-time catechist said, “I learn so much from the
children!”
“I’m not a teacher…” You certainly do not need to be an expert on teaching or
the Catholic faith because training, materials, and support are provided.
Curé School Opening

grade ELA teacher for the 2021-2022 school year.

Enflame Our Homes
June's theme for Enflame Our Homes is: Joyful
families SERVE. Like moldy leftovers in the back of
the fridge, our gifts and talents go to waste if we don't
use them! Service to others doesn't need to be
elaborate or expensive to have an effect on our
families. Simply noticing the needs of those we care
about and offering a small kindness is a habit that goes
a long way toward building a more joyful family. Here

Spiritual Pen Pal Program
With the Covid pandemic keeping everything shut
down in the prisons, there has been no spiritual
mentoring allowed in over a year. St. Dismas has
begun a spiritual pen pal program in which a Catholic
inmate is matched with an outside Catholic to help
them in their faith journey. There is no requirements to
participate other than a love for your faith. Anonymity
will be preserved. A sample letter will be given to help
you begin your correspondence. This is a wonderful
way to practice the corporal work of mercy, “I was
imprisoned and you visited me”. If you feel a call to
participate, please call Vicki Price, 816.589.1411, or
email me at [email protected]. Thank you for
giving this your consideration
