The parable cannot be un-derstood if we do not take account of the question to which Jesus intended to respond: "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus brings about an unexpected re-versal in the traditional concept of neighbor. The Samaritan is the neighbor and not the wounded man, as we would have ex-pected. This means that we must not wait till our neighbor appears along our way, perhaps quite dramatically. It belongs to

us to be ready to notice him, to find him. We are all called to be the neighbor! The problem of the doctor of the law is reversed. From an abstract and academic problem, it be-comes a concrete and living problem. The question to ask is

The Nativity Fast (The Fast of St. Philip begans Nov. 16th)

The American Shopping Season is at hand. Some people will spend it

jostling for bargains; others will pass the time lamenting the commer-

cialization of Christmas. The Eastern Churches, on the other hand,

encourage their faithful to prepare for this feast by fasting. Each of

these Churches has a pre-Nativity Fast, but each Church observes it

to a different degree.

The Eastern Churches began observing this Fast between the 6th and

8th centuries.

WHY DO WE FAST? St Simeon of Thessalonika, writing in the fifteenth century, explained the

purpose of this Fast in terms of its length. “The Nativity Forty-day Fast represents the fast

undertaken by Moses, who—having fasted for forty days and forty nights—received the

Commandments of God, written on stone tablets. And we, fasting for forty days, will reflect

upon and receive from the Virgin the living Word—not written upon stone, but born, incar-

nate—and we will commune of His Divine Body.” As Moses received the Law after his forty-

day fast, we will receive the living Word incarnate at the end of this Fast.

One thread running through this Fast is the remembrance of the time before the Incarna-

tion. Mankind was in one sense disconnected from God, having lost the intimacy with Him

which we were meant to have because we were created in His image. Fasting is our way to

express our sorrow at man’s loss of fellowship with God.

CHARACTER OF THE NATIVITY FAST Many contemporary Eastern writers have encouraged

the observance of the Nativity Fast in contrast to the popular Western “pre-celebration” of

Christmas, which focuses on decorating, spending, and partying. They emphasize prepara-

tion for the feast in quietness and a simplified way of life. Instead of a harried pursuit of gifts

and cards for people who will likely “re-gift” them for the next Christmas party, the Fast ena-

bles believers to focus on the mystery of the Incarnation, the “reason for the season.”

Many see this Fast as essential for us at this time of the year, to shift our focus from our-

selves to others, spending less time worrying about our appearance, our cuisine and our

home decor in order to use our time in increased prayer and caring for the poor.

Operation Christmas Child Operation Christmas Child distributes shoeboxes to children all over the world, bringing hope, comfort and the Good News of Jesus Christ. Once again, our parish is collecting items for Christmas Shoeboxes going to children in Ukraine. Donations must be small enough to fit in a regular-sized shoebox: a small “wow” toy, school supplies, small books, hygiene items, gloves, toques, scarves, slippers and socks. We cannot accept toothpaste, playdoh, liquid, gels, candy, glue, playing cards or any war-themed toys.

The students and teachers of our catechism program will pack and deliver the boxes on November 18th, so donations must be placed in the specially-marked collection box in the church before then. Monetary donations are also accepted, as we will shop for items to balance each gift box. We thank our UCWL, who generously continue to pay the $10 fee per box, which goes towards shipping and religious materials for children in Ukraine. This is our opportunity to spread God's love across the miles and to offer prayers of peace. Thank you and bless you for giving. Winter Clothing Drive As the weather chills, the need for warm outdoor clothing in-creases. There are many in our city without proper winter wear. At the back of the church is a box labelled "Winter Clothing Col-

lection". Please bring whatever winter items you can spare - boots, mitts, gloves, hats, snow pants, jackets/coats and scarves. Clothing donations (for children and adults) will be collected from now until February, and will be divided between the Main Street Project and Siloam Mission. Please let your chil-dren be involved in the collecting of donated items from home, as this is an important lesson in giving to those less fortunate. Thank you Wanda Prychitko, Catechetical Program
